Exclusivity is quite key to that. And there's no value in something everyone else has.

The emote will still be priced $120 simply because it's a finished product out of the manufacturer.
No one sane going to sell you for $20 when they spend $100 making it.

I don't really like the emote (too simple), the statue is cool but I won't spend that much for something I don't really like!...

I would have liked the Diamond Dust from Shiva in Final Fantasy X but I guess FFXIV's dev team would never do something so extravagant!...

I love the emote, and I wish I was a fan a Shiva, so I could justify the purchase. Sadly, I can't find any good excuse to spend that much money on the emote, no matter how much I like it ;_;

Once again I ask why not? The game is not being affected were it is a requirement, and it's more of optional content anyways. It is a nice incentive for the company just wanting to say thank you for your support. I'm sure that this does not just include figures anyways, Audio, and art books are another great example. People don't buy them for emotes and the market is mainly focus on collectors or people who enjoy art. By saying it shouldn't can you at least emphasize on why? What harm does it really do? From a collectors perspective and a person who enjoys these kind of things it really is great that the company is providing exclusive content to us. Now I would love to see a Diablo one as well. Maybe add unique actual combat skills. I say why not? Those who want to pay for a piece of art should be allowed to. Think about it from my perspective jump potions ruin the quality of players to an extend, eventually they will build up the experience and become decent players. SE excuse was to allow new players to be with their friends in content progress wise. Yet those who play with them outside of their circle will put up with it by force. Hence once again, what is wrong with an emote that does not interfere with the story line? All it really demonstrates is that we wanted spent money and it's just a nice bonus. Who does not like free stuff for a game that their playing? These emotes are account based not individual character base.

It’s no different than a lot of the smarmy tactics gaming companies use to gain unlimited income. From opening your lootboxes in front of a group of people to make them jealous, to matching the people not by skill level, but whether or not you bought cash shop items, to building whole games and their progression behind lootboxes and cash shop items (looking at you, Battlefront II and Destiny 2). They are made the way they are for shameless money grabbing. The haves versus the have nots. The haves will buy it because they want the exclusivity, and the have nots will buy it out of jealousy because they want to be included in the cool next thing. For me, the costs are: $175 actually it looks like. $145 plus shipping.

And yet we players will just eat those tactics and give em a pass. If people stopped buying them and held these companies accountable for their shitty buisness practices that prey on the impatient, the young, and the impressionable, they’d stop releasing this stuff and go back to locking these items behind in-progression. But no, we groan, buy it anyway cause it’s cool, and tell the companies it’s okay.

Do you value your eyesight? Everyone else has eyesight as well, so logically, you'd have to value blindness higher than eyesight, because it's more rare.

Being "the odd one out" in general doesn't have a positive connotation.

Thus, it is very apparent people not only do very strongly value things that are not exclusive at all, they also do not necessarily value things that are very exclusive. What does that say about exclusivity? It obviously doesn't have much to do with value, because even the correlation is shoddy at best, deriving a causation is even more problematic.

As such... it is very puzzling why artificial exclusivity continues to persist. I personally assume that people simply hope to cover up some social need deficiency with it, like a lack of attention or social acknowledgement. Results vary. It's not rare that people get unhappy about their exclusivity status because they are met with envy and contempt instead of whatever they were hoping for.

This is proven wrong just by the fact that the hempen top is among the most popular glamours used. It's available to everyone, and it's still getting used by so many people. Why? Because it looks good. Here's another example: if people liked exclusivity I wouldn't see dozens of holiday bears every time I log in. But the bear is cool and new and that's why people use it.

Zojha already gave the general rundown, but I'll throw in my own personal damage and admit that some items in this game I bought because I didn't want to feel left out. So this has a mix of two things - exclusivity is wrongfully equated to status, which makes people like you want to have a thing while denying other people the thing. But once a group has been established, most people will want in on it to feel like they belong. In which case SE not cashing in on that group seems kind of stupid, the emote already exists.

SE probably ran the business case, and found that they make more if one person spends $100 on a statue after costs for the emote, then if 25 people spent $4 for it alone. That is, they cant depend on 25 people buying the emote for every one who would buy the statue. Like there aren't enough casual spenders to make the targets they want to reach, so they need to focus on big spenders instead. It sucks, but this is gaming now.

Typically your fashion example is actually really good. The fashion industry is driven by the desire to be different and it's often said there are 2 groups of people within the fashion world. Another example within the fashion world is things like Hollywood award ceremonies or premieres. If my partner turned up to a Christmas party in the same dress someone else was wearing it'd be a disaster...

Technology as well is another example. having a 1080p hd tv in ya living room years ago was something that made you stand out from the masses, yet these days everyone has several of them and it's the 4k tv that set you apart from the rest.

Think of your resume. You really don't want your resume to look like everyone elses. You want it to stand out and say "hey give me the job..." If it's just another one of the same thing an employers read 100 times your's is going straight in the rejected pile along with the rest of them.

As for eyesight it's not necessarily something that isn't valued it's just something that's taken for granted. and never even considered. How many times do you see a color blind thread about something that's actually hard for some folks to see. the simplified blm job guage being the most recent example. Eyesight is simply taken for granted and thus it was never considered that some people might not be able to see certain colors on things like those job guages

In game its everywhere you look to. When people go afk in the reach on there shiny new shin ex mount that no one else has yet. the only reason players do it is to stand out and say hey look at me. if that player was afk on ifrits pony no one would even look twice because everyone has that.

Kinda be like owning an aston martin. wouldn't be anywhere near as cool if the entire city was driving them.

Legacy's as well. No one wants to be remembered for doing something everyone else has already done. They want to be remembered for doing something different that sets them apart. Like the guy who discovered dna, or the guy that discovered penicillin.

It is the desire to stand out and be different that drives the whole world and progress / innovation. Without it we'd still be in the stone ages as everyone would have simply been happy being the same as everyone else.

But instead the world is driven by the those people that wantto be different and do things no one else ever has that will make them stand out from the crowd.

There are millions of studies out there related to Optimal Distinctiveness Theory and tons of other psychological behaviours.

The one I linked is basically about the balance between 2 human desires.
1:- the human desire to stand out and be unique / valued
2:- the desire to also fit in and be socially accepted.

Another example is the games character customization. lots of threads around here about new races and more customisation options etc etc. why? because people want to be unique and stand out. and not look like everyone else.

Do you honestly believe these companies would suddenly, out of the new found kindness of their hearts, take a financial loss and just add everything into the game? What would actually happen is this content simply wouldn't be made. Look no further than Mass Effect: Andromeda. EA shelved all DLC due to the negative reception. It wasn't going to make them money, so they stopped bothering with it.

A lot of people don't seem to understand how official merchandise works. Third party companies are usually involved, hired to create merchandise in the likeness of the characters of popular franchises. A portion of the money made, then, goes to that third party company. Another portion goes to Square Enix itself and may or may not find its way back into funding FFXIV.

The emote is there as an extra incentive to get people to buy it and make a profit for both Square Enix and the third party company involved. So selling it on the Mog Station would remove the incentive and when future statues go on sale less people would buy them as they'd just assume they could wait it out and eventually get it themselves for a fraction of the cost.

Then people shouldn't say the emote isn't a factor, the emote is well factored into the price if it's a motivation big enough that could affect sales.

Except that’s how gaming used to be. Costumes were built into the game progression when I first started gaming. Most games have the systems built in and then, due to the popularity and monetary benefit of loot boxes, which should have been kept to Free to Play games, they got caught by the allure of locking cosmetic items behind some kind of paywall.

I was inclined to agree that the emote should be available separately, but then I imagined hordes of people spamming it around the Limsa Aetheryte and thus concluded SE has done the right thing.

Why does there need to be a bonus attached to the statues? If people don't want to buy statues on their own for the price they are worth then maybe SE should quit selling extortionate statues and instead make more emotes for the masses.

It isn't unusual for businesses - especially those associated with movies or video games - to team up with third party organisations that design merchandise in the image of iconic characters. Some of this merchandise is aimed at collectors and is expensive. Sometimes it ends up being sold as part of a special collector's edition. Sometimes it is sold by itself. Yet more often than not it is accompanied by special bonuses such as emotes or the aforementioned collector's edition.

It's an incentive. Square Enix get a cut of the profits, though so too do the companies involved in creating the merchandise. Selling the emote by itself would cause less people to buy the statue as they'd just ignore the incentive and wait until the emote was added to the Mog Station. Furthermore, not everything needs to be available to everybody. Some things are simply aimed at those who have a high disposable income and the prestige that comes with that purchasing power is valued highly. Let's be honest here - most of the people complaining are doing so because they do not have the purchasing power to throw money at the statue. They are not the target audience for the bundle deal.

Except in this case, it's linked to intentional business decisions. The people complaining do not understand how this particular element of businesses work - some deals are exclusive and locked behind a lofty price tag and are aimed specifically at enticing those with a disposable income. If these exclusive items start showing up on the Mog Station then future deals will be less likely to succeed as the people with a disposable income will avoid them. It's no different to the bonuses that arrive with a collector's edition. People buy them specifically for neat stuff but also the aspect of exclusivity.

People would not buy collector's editions if regular editions came with the exact same bonuses. Ultimately, though, most of those complaining are simply doing so because they want what they cannot afford.

If it's true, why should they not accept it? SE is a vendor selling a product at a specific price. You can certainly ask them to change it or inform them what you would rather see, but they're under no obligation to change the terms of their offering, and I think too many businesses simply cave in to consumer pressure as it is (or worse yet, distorted perceptions of it...) Games and various other media-based products do have a habit of attracting audiences with a larger than usual sense of entitlement, it must be said.

They clearly think it is likelier to make them more money this way. As to it being "extortionate", that is a matter of opinion. Personally, I don't think it would hurt for them to unbundle them at some point, say maybe a year or two later, and sell them at a price point they see fit, but many people will still complain regardless. Can't please everybody... People already flip out over the presence of emotes on the shop. Besides, they by and large do sell emotes on this basis, and add them fairly regularly as part of the main sub offering, too. These are very limited in number. It's the same with the bundling of minions to the fanfest tickets, I wasn't too keen on it, but in the end it doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the game much, since I barely ever use minions or these emotes. As it is, they're prestige emotes, so even if they were unbundled SE would likely keep the price point high enough to maintain that; otherwise, they'd be like all those other emotes you barely ever use. So it is a delicate balance to achieve.

TL;DR I expect they'll unbundle them, just not for a while.

I'm not too bothered what they choose to do, honestly. I bought the Odin statue because he's one of my favourite Final Fantasy summons and because I though the emote looks rather cool. The exclusivity is a nice bonus. I'm not as keen on the Shiva statue or the emote that comes with it, though I decided to purchase it anyway simply because I could. It's very likely that they will make more in the future and I intend to have access to all of them. That will be a delightful day!

As for housing, which came up, the sheer volume of content devoted to it is way in excess of anything else in the game. This is why some people get worked up over the lack of availability of it, which they did go some way to remedying through apartments.

Raid content has to be scaled to a certain level of difficulty, since the game is meant to be challenging, so its exclusivity is understandable - and desirable. What they can and will be doing is creating more intermediate content, for those who can't devote the time commitment raiding requires. My particular pet peeve with raiding as it is, is that the easy story mode crap is often taken as the "what truly happened" version, whereas I would prefer to see the reverse, i.e. the Minstrel augmenting your abilities in his tales to make it seem like it was easy, whereas the savage/extreme mode is the true reflection of the story. But yeah, I can understand the gripes behind the actual story of the game being content-locked, since the story is a key selling point. Again, emotes are not.

You're moving goalposts. The context is irrelevant. Under no circumstance should any person be forced to accept things for how they are. That is why opinions exist. That is why feedback exists.

Also, seriously? People are complaining because they can't afford it? Gee, what a surprise. The same way that the grand majority of people who complain about housing don't have a house. The same way that people who complained about raiding not being able to raid pre-story mode. The same way, to this day, that people complain about their class and their role in party compositions or their place in class balancing. The same way that people complain there should or shouldn't be parsers. Of course people will post something in opposition of whatever does not benefit them or flat out excludes them. It's ridiculous that you're even trying to imply that since someone can't afford it, it's not serious feedback, it's just them being angry/jealous/disappointed or whatever have you.

I guess we should simply ignore feedback about content from people who can't clear it, run it, experience it (in the case of housing), or unlock it then.

I never said Square Enix was obligated to change their terms. Entitlement also has nothing to do with my statement. All I said was that the consumer does not have to accept what they are being offered, which means they don't have to buy it and they don't have to like it or tolerate it. Feedback exists for a reason. Square Enix can do whatever they like. I was simply addressing how "it is done this way, therefore deal with it," was such a silly notion. If people simply just dealt with how things were, then things would never be what they are today. Either way I don't care about whether or not the emote is available separately. Square Enix's store is god awful and even though I have the money to afford it I just don't care enough about Shiva nor do I care about a "special" emote.

Unfortunately for many people 'feedback' results in the masses simply demanding that they be granted access to everything. No solid reasons are usually given beyond variants of the phrase 'Gimme, Gimme!'

Whether they will eventually do it will depend on the sales of the bundled products. I think they have to get to a point where they're comfortable that the bundling is doing them more financial damage than not. I very much doubt they've not thought about this. They are very conservative as a company, though, and probably won't rush into doing it. The idea of a tie-in does make a lot of sense, to me, as certainly at a psychological level you do feel the product has a value-added element to it. Some people clearly disagree, but they're not going to budge on it unless they can be convinced there is a solid financial case that will increase net profit and hopefully not cannibalise their sales of the bundled products too much. Simply stating it might increase net profits is not going to interest them without some data to hand and I think they'll only trial it once they get the go ahead from their business and marketing analysts to do so.

This is actual irony coming from someone who made an entire thread requesting more outfits for male characters on the basis that female characters get more. People who are arguing that those with disposable income get more and how that's unfair and they should be treated equally and given the same opportunity in receiving the emote pretty much falls in the same line of thinking. Those with more money are more privileged and receive more for how much they spend on this game. Those who play female characters are more privileged because they have more unique outfits designed for them more often, based on their decision to play said female characters. Does that mean people with less money should be satisfied from being excluded in getting this emote in some way? Especially those who don't have a choice for their income, and have to deal with the hand they were dealt? No. The same way that people who play male characters should not be satisfied with constantly being excluded in glamour updates and/or new designs, despite the fact they can literally choose to play another gender at any time.

Just because the reasons aren't good enough for you, or just sound like "gimme gimme," to you, doesn't mean they are. Don't act so condescending.

The emote comes with the statue to help sell the statue. It serves as advertising in-game every time someone uses it in the presence of others. It also serves as a means of vanity to the purchaser allowing them to show off with something not everyone will have proving they are a special snowflake after all.

Selling the emote separately defeats the purpose of the emote.

You're ignoring my point. The imbalance doesn't matter. Splitting the emotes from the figures and adding more male outfits would ultimately only increase satisfaction on a personal level, it would hardly benefit Square Enix in any way. It's clear because despite the fact there is a female character bias, even though there's a male character majority they've yet to suffer from constantly making that decision. Requesting for more male outfits to be added despite Square Enix clearly not being hurt from the lack of them, aligns with requesting the emotes be split from the figures, despite them not being hurt by the emotes being attached to them.

The developers outright admitted to feeling 'uncomfortable' designing skimpy male attire. That is a large reason as to why there's imbalance in regards to male and female glamour options.

The Odin/Shiva emotes are specifically designed as an incentive to help sales of the statues that they come with. They're both very different cases. If the Odin/Shiva emotes are suddenly sold on the Mog Station then less people will purchase future statues with a similar deal as they will expect to have access to the emotes in due time.

The only funny thing about all this is that when I actually do get my hands on the Shiva emote I will struggle to see it as ice. Instead, I will struggle not to imagine it as the crystallised tears of those who do not have it themselves!

Don't make me laugh. Do you really think shareholders or anyone who's actually managing the money around Square Enix cares about that garbage?

If the people paying you tell you to make something, you make it. If you won't, they'll find someone who will. Especially if they see that not creating these things because of their "uncomfortable"ness is losing them money.

They developer doesn't have the final say-so, especially in the mogstation. Yoshida has already gone on the record that him and his team have zero involvement with the mogstation aside from creating whatever is put into it when they are told to. People can whine and complain all they want about mogstation outfits, they have to be loud enough to be heard by the people that actually matter, and it's certainly not the development team.
