Okay, taunting people aside, the only reason protect's use and effect is being called into question is simply because it's tied to a role action slot now and people don't like hitting extra buttons. Even if the extra button(s) will use the skill, remove the skill and replace the skill with another.
Also this is probably fairly true. I don't know if people seriously understand half the things they suggest, only the small inconvenience they currently have to suffer. With 4.0 battle changes, I often wonder if it's even possible to do some of the old fights at minimum ilevel/level ('cause for farmers, there was always the guaranteed multiple scrolls)? Technically speaking, even V1S-4S would probably need to be adjusted for the loss of 15% mitigation throughout an entire 9 to 13 minute encounter. This would 100% hurt whether or not some compositions would even be viable and hurt the ability to DF it (something not so much on EU or NA servers, but used commonly on JP servers).
