I completely agree that a buyback function would be very useful, and I'm sorry to hear you ended up selling your crown by mistake.
With that said, It doesn't change the fact that it was your mistake and, while I'm pretty sure the GMs are able to restore your item, it's not exactly something they are meant to do. They can, and I believe they probably will if you keep insisting, but fixing up player mistakes is not part of their job and calling them "lazy" because they're not answering your call is simply wrong.
I know the "damage" is much higher in your case, but this is similar to someone asking a GM to refund their anima because of a wrong teleport. The GMs can, but it doesn't mean they must, should or will do.
Anyways, I sincerely wish you good luck, losing that crown indeed sucks.
Sorry to hear this happened, I'd be super pissed.
The point that if they help you they have to help everyone else kind of doesn't work in this specific scenario though. Aside from event items, these are the first items you can only obtain once. In the case of an item you can only obtain once ever on a character, they should do an item restore within a certain period of time. I mean it's not worth gil and it's untradable so there's really hardly any reason someone would actually sell it on purpose unless they just didn't want it.
Did you also try putting in a ticket on the FFXIV support on this site?
They implemented a way to get the CoP rings and whatnot back in XI after many years of the playerbase of being persistant. I really don't know why they didn't implement this again, even if it was on a 30 day cooldown like the CoP rings its better than nothing, I guess the best way to get your item back and get them to implement this is to keep this thread alive and hope bayohne or someone passes the idea onto the dev team.
I totally agree a buyback Feature should be implemented, but as for Meowie's Cause, without that buyback feature, there's really nothing SE can do about it.. should have been more careful before selling an Item that you know you couldn't get back. I feel your pain, I totally understand.. if this happened to me I would be highly pissed.. but again at the same time.. I know I'm the one that made the mistake Not SE nor the game, I made the input, I hit the sell x item, so it would be entirely my fault. Yes I would Pursue, attempting to get my "one-time" item back just like you are, but at the end of the day.. I know I frigged up and when other stuff like this comes to my path. I know to be extra cautious when selling to an NPC.
I wish you all the luck on getting your Paragon Crown back =(
this is much worse then the time i npc's my bomb ash thinking it was my brimstone, lol
Damn that sucks.... for any U/U item there should be a second message/warning that comes up when you try to sell it. Not just the normal one. This could really stop a lot of peoples frustration.
Sorry man.
Just excuse for being out damaged by Kite!
But this reminds me when Vanst got stuck in Blacksmith build for... a week!
He DCed and the char stuck in syn pose for a whole week until a server maintenance. GM couldn't even kick him off the game.
All I can say is you're screwed.
The GM's, well they dont exist, any you do meet are utterly useless and you might as well be getting support from a banana. The Support at SE is beyond awful, everyone I know doesnt even try to contact them anymore when things like this or other support needed things happen because they know its just a waste of time. Makes me appreciate NCSoft every time I contact them and I get a HUMAN response within an hour.
Unfortunate about your helm, maybe you will get lucky, dont hold your breath.
Are you serious? GMs won't restore one time unique items like that?! That really is bad service. I can understand for some other generic items, but any item that can't be collected another time should either be restore-able by a GM or impossible to sell to an NPC in the first place. Hopefully Yoshi-P hears about this and they put an NPC that can give you back achievement/event items lost.
That would definitely be a must addition. Mistakes happen and some are really unforgiving.
For those who don't think that GMs are the people to contact for this, read this:

What issues will the Game Masters be handling?
In FINAL FANTASY XIV, we have a group of support staff called Game Masters, or GMs, that handle various issues that occur within the game. The GMs are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
GMs will appear as player characters in the game and will assist customers on various issues such as when customers are stuck in game geometry, or when they are being harassed by another player. GMs may also handle other issues such as trade disputes and item restoration requests.
In order to report an issue within the game, you will need to submit a GM call. This can be done through Support Desk in the main menu. You can open the main menu by pressing the "-" key.
For the 5th time, I KNOW this was my fault. If it was an item with 5 T4 materia in it I wouldn't bother them with a restoration because technically I could still obtain it again by my own means.
If you haven't posted in the technical support forums yet I'd give that a try. Sometimes you'll get a response from a rep there. Just explain your situation and mention that you've tried contacting a GM numerous times only to get an automated response everytime, and that live chat sent you right back to that perpetual circle. Keep spamming the GM help too.
Hope for the best in getting your crown back.
Lol, what's funny is every time a GM sends me one of the messages, it directs me to check the GM interactions section in support, which is exactly what I posted earlier.
So basically it's
GM Interactions: Please contact a GM in game through the support menu
GM: Please consult the GM interactions section
GM Interactions: Please contact a GM in game through the support menu
GM: Please consult the GM interactions section
GM Interactions: Please contact a GM in game through the support menu
GM: Please consult the GM interactions section
GM Interactions: Please contact a GM in game through the support menu
GM: Please consult the GM interactions section
Well, I finally got the chance to speak to a GM directly. Unfortunately, there appears to be nothing they can do.

I guess my last chance of ever getting this item back is if they allow us to re-obtain the item by speaking to the NPC again. And yes, I misspelled Holidays lol x.x
So.. any chance of a fix in a future patch for this devs?
Naw, the inability to get a replacement copy of an item that you can only get as the reward for an achievement is definitely a problem with the game, not with a player. I hope this gets updated in a patch, it's the best solution.
Hey! Tell that guy Robrob Amatsu to STOP IT and use the search function!
Considering the item is untradable, unique and obtained via an Achievement, I don't see the harm in letting people re-obtain it through the same NPC. There's not a single way I can see someone exploiting that in some manner. You can only have one and the only way to get rid of it is to sell it or drop it.
Its gone brah, my Onion helm disappeared some time between 1.18 and 1.19 and I contacted support they said we don't deal with it contact GMs and i contacted them, they said we don't deal with it contact support, and i contacted them, and they basically said Screw you, not like we can do anything about it.
That sucks. :(
Hopefully if/when they do implement item restoration they can obviously see you have the achievement and can restore it for you.
I'm surprised they didn't say something like "Sorry, we can't give you back your item for the moment because of the complexity and awfulness of the current servers ! Wait till 2.0"
I'm very sorry for you though. And the fact they can't restore an item like this (there's no need to check logs or whatever to see if you indeed had the crow or not, just a quick look at the jobs will do the trick and i guess the crown sells for 1 gil or something like that so it's not like you would make any profit out of it). I think that because of the servers issues those kind of mistakse happens a lot. It happened to me before at least, but for random trash so it was fine. And SE's GM could, for once, do a little something about it.
GMs are powerless jokes, they only exist to to tell people to go to the support website. If you really want to fix this, put it in as a bug and prey you convince QA to press the issue.
I recommend to state the inability to acquire a second perigrin helm is the bug and players should only be restricted from getting a second one if there is already one on their account.
yeah.. but that's BULLSHIT. And yes the GM's should restore people's rare/ex items that are the best in the game if they accidentally npc them, because 1. there is no way to get it again even though they still have every job to 50 2. Why is it even NPCable?!?! The sad part is anyone could make this mistake hell look at my signature ;)
If it is in their tos/job description they need to honor it. That is really shameful on their behalf.
I feel you bro, I have NPCed my Garlond goggles by mistake a few months before.
They are not as important as the crown but yeah, they should be able to replace these things (or at least make them unsellable to npc).
only the sgms (senior) can do this, the one you spoke to was probly just a glorified customer service rep and didnt feel like bothering his boss, you might have better luck durring jp time getting ahold of an sgm as NA gms are just outsourced stooges
Hmm, that is possible. But the GM also did mention that the info in the support center is incorrect. I took his advice and put in a suggestion for reinstatement of such a service. They have this service in FFXI, I would hope it becomes available in FFXIV as well.
Though I think a better solution to this, which affects everyone equally, would be to just allow us to recover the items ourselves by speaking to the NPC again. I really hope a forum rep can pass this suggestion along to the dev team.
This is just like the time I sold my stack of copper ores by accident.
That sucks.
Well another good suggestion would be to ensure that any Unique/Untradeable item cannot be sold to NPC.
I was about to suggest this, glad I read through the thread first. But definitely, all items that are of this nature (That sell for 1G naturally.) should be marked as "NO SALE" in your inventory. Example:
Random Object ------------- 1,000G
Random Armor -------------- 2,225G
U/U Item ----------------- NO SALE
Another Random Object ------- 355G
U/U Armor ---------------- NO SALE
And so on. Alternative is to make it so when you go to sell items it can be sorted into 3 categories: Equipment, Consumables, All Items. Choosing Equipment filters all items from the sell menu leaving only armor, weapons, accessories/jewelry. If you choose Consumables it hides all equipment leaving only consumable items and monster parts/drops. Using All Items would show everything your inventory contains. This might be the default filter applied. Of course all unique/untradable items will not appear in a list when selling regardless of filter used. When choosing to throw away items there will be a second menu confirmation required. For those who feel it's unnecessary for these steps a command would exist to toggle this feature off.
By doing something like this one cannot complain if they accidentally chucked out an item. The option to seek a double confirmation for those items exists, they chose to turn it off themselves.
EDIT: I can't believe how many changes I had to do to this post alone. >.> I'm not all there tonight.
They should do what they did in FFXI... They let you have the privilege to have one item which you drop to return to you into the mailbox and in ffxiv's case be back in your inventory
Edit: As in One item for ur whole FFXIV career for that one character
You know, now that I think about it, FFXI did have that prompt when you tried to sell RARE items, it was a "are you sure" type message.
I really do feel for you, it sucks to loose an item, I do agree that there should be a buyback or a full implementation of item restore, but as the game is right now, I am sure that even doing something simple like that is chaotic and is most likely why GMs wont do it right now.
Not necessarily the case though -- XIV is very much in development so there's the possibility nothing can be done just yet given how they're constantly changing stuff regarding the game's item structure?
XI is well past foundation changes, so maybe there's nothing they can do just yet in regards to item recovery of this nature, so while it is the same company, the game's are in different states and of different development natures -- The only thing I can think of is rolling back your character's data to a certain point but that's usually something normal GMs don't do in MMOs unless there's corruption.
People complain about extra menus and confirmation prompts, though.
Poor you.
No buy back is such a pain... I wish SE will implement this feature too ( just 5 or 10 recent sell items is fine )
But i'm sure it hard to implement since the data structure is too messy.
This has been exactly my experience! Exactly precisely. In fact...
There is no doubt in my mind that a buy back feature would be absolutely awesome, but the people arguing that other mmos have GMs waiting around to assist you in reversing your mistakes by rolling back character data are relating a reality that is not consistent with my experiences.
Typical GM's being absolute useless in every way possible. Dont even know why they have a job.
Ohhhh no, I am so sorry BUT I am pretty sure they will implement this buy back service sooner or later. I swear to god you are not the only one who has made a similar mistake (or will do in the future) and SE would start getting so much grief if you wouldn't be able to get rare/ex items back that you have accidenlty dropped.
Make achievment items 0 value (or non sellable) and people wouldnt even abuse this system...
Well that's about 76.954941185713163401586950156052 times worse than what happened to me a while back. Or would be if gil wasn't so much easier to obtain back then. But still worse I bet. And yes, I did use Calculator.
I was running in the markets and hit my turbo button.
Select retainer, select item, purchase.
They made such a big deal about ~5K and preventing people from accidentally boarding an airship and yet have the default position for grouped and unstackable items set to confirm. That could end up being your whole piggy bank right there! Why was that not fixed?!
I should start leaving the better portion of my coin with my retainer! w
