Fanfest will most likely bring a venerable treasure trove of that stuff. "Really SE? No bunny race AGAIN!?" <- Please look forward to it.

Which is not true in the slightest, but okay.

Really, the only difference between nonverbal communication used in the real world and that in this game is the lack of complexity, due to all the subtle ticks like eye-movment, hand gesturing, and even vocal variety being unavailable or delivered in a static manner. Does this mean that the nonverbal communication doesn't matter or carries absolutely no meaning? I really don't think so.

Designers of these virtual worlds always attempt to overcome limitations in verbal and written communication through not only simulated body gesturing, but through mechanical cues as well. To say that communication in a virtual space doesn't matter actually, in my opinion, vastly overlooks the level of subtle detail that is going on between players, let alone the fact that these are people controlling these characters and projecting their mood through them, it's just in ways that is not "readily apparent," which really, no non-verbal communication is in general.

/p Thanks a ton guys! <Take care>
If that's how someone interprets it, but you say that isn't accurate to what you're truly feeling, that validates the point that it's not a very effective way of getting the subject to properly decode the message. I only know the weight behind it because you *told* me.
Those are *huge* differences. And all truth be told, people are much worse at reading nonverbal cues than they think they are. Does this mean it has no merit? No, and that's nothing I even said. But in terms of the game, to suggest that somehow a canned animation created by a third party is *more effective* than a person's own words, and therefore we need another emote to convey a sentiment we can express in two words...is just silly.Quote:

Never forget
Radiosuitcase, I'm your biggest fan. Come to Cerberus and we can hang out and stuff /thanks /gratitude
My bad for not prefacing my previous response. I was responding to both you and Radiosuitcase, the latter who suggested that there is no merit to the non-verbal communication used in these virtual spaces.
Also, am I missing something, here? Where did I imply that the non-verbal FFXIV allows us is "more effective" than a person's words? I do remember saying this:
a "vast majority" describes quantity, not quality.
Of course there isn't a need. Who, in this thread, said it was a need? The OP certainly didn't, and I didn't, either. What is wrong with suggesting stuff we want for this game?
Also, the point I'm getting at with that part of my post is not to fabricate or misinterpret my arguments. It's a big issue with this community at large, unfortunately.
At this point, you're just nitpicking.
I literally bow before and after a run as I don't talk.
In real life, when customers say thank you, some times I would nod my head or even say thank you back...all in which you could do in this game.
You even said you dunno what emote can be implemented ... because it's already in the game.
I mean if you REALLY want something out there I guess you can do the Sign Language sign for thank you.
Ya'll are arguing for the sake of it...Makes no sense.
This whole thread. Refer to signature below.
Personally, I'm not sure what emote can signify a, "thank you." Bow is good enough for me as stated numerous times. Buutt, don't we think we should tone it down alittle? Don't see why we should make backhanded insults or rude specific remarks regarding the OP. He just made a simple, harmless suggestion.
Not wanting to be long-winded, humans have the ability to discern symbolism and make appropriate (or in-appropriate) interpretations of most anything, including jerky animations plagued by fudged up transport protocols. Yes, it is subjective, you could be wrong either way whether irl or not. Sure, ethnography varies - our priorities when it comes to reading other people though It is hardly ever just a segment of messages but a continuous flow of information - whether exact or symbolic. If your brain was less complex (or if you had some genetic disorder), it could be experienced as purely segmental.
TLDR; What I wanted to say is, everything used to express yourself is part of impressions picked up by others no matter the medium of presentation.
Maybe it's just me, but I can't help but think of /bow being a sarcastic way of saying "I just did a good job" or something.

It's like the only way I've seen people bow in real life.
If you want proper bow, try change race to elezen/lalafell.
By that logic, there'd be no need for us to even have characters. The whole game could be text without pictorial avatars at all, but it wouldn't be nearly as engaging. And for simple communication, like thanking someone, sure it can be done either through text or emotes, but doing it visually through our characters is much more expressive.
I'm not so sure that we necessarily need a new emote for it, as there are some existing ones that can be made to work. Personally, I use /serpentsalute which is already kind of a cross between a salute and a bow, and seems a suitable way to acknowledge someone's help. If there's time, I may also thank them in text, but that's secondary. (Plus, in a lot of cases where it comes up, they're gone by the time I can switch to my keyboard to type something.)
I mean that would change the game entirely into a text-based adventure, in which many of the feats you're able to accomplish in the current game would be impossible. And yes, it wouldn't be as fun. Really not the same thing.
I love the emotes and everything, but I don't think they are always a better way to convey certain things (Hell, I tend to read the text of the emote more often than look at the expressions the character, since most of the time I notice that before I even had the chance to look). This particular request seems unnecessary because there are already other options as you and others have pointed out.
