Why is Yoshi P turning his back on the playerbase that loves this game the most?

I enjoy this game as it is. I played FF11 for several years with all the time that an 18yr old nerdy girl has, but was never really able to achieve much. It was very frustrating. I didn't start from day 1, and always felt because of this I was never really able to catch up. Especially as the game required you to rely on the cooperation of others to play and obtains clears to progress the story line, and achieve any of the items that were deemed 'required' to be considered for groups moving forward.
It led to incredible amounts of drama and greed end game. So and so stole X item. Troll this group so we can steal the NM with the rare drop, ect ect.

No thanks.

Now I'm in my 30's and I definitely do not have the time or desire to play a game for years and still be bottom of the pack. I don't want to deal with people's selfishness, greed, or online drama. I almost didn't bother trying FF14 because I didn't want to deal with the end game crap that I remembered from my younger years.

I gave it a go because I'm a gamer at heart and I love the FF series. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't like FF11, which confused me at first, but I have realized that FF14 has not turned it's back on me as a long time fan and gamer. It has grown with me. It has adjusted in a way that means it still fits into my life as a 30yr old as well as it did when I was a time rich 18yr old.

In addition to this, it has allowed easy entry for non-FF fans or MMO-aficionados.

My partner (who isn't an FF fan and was very reluctant to play an MMO due to the time sink) is able to come home from a 12hr work day, or a 2 week long business trip, and can relax and punch some enemies and still be 'relevent' in the game. He isn't penalized because he can't dedicate hours and weeks at a time to this game. He gets to have fun and relax and enjoy the game world for what it is.

This means that I can now share my love of FF with my partner, we can play together when he has the time to play, or I can play on my own without worrying that I will be 'too far ahead of him'. I have found people to be much more willing to help with clears or obtaining items because everyone knows in this game that things do drop, and eventually they will be able to get it if they haven't already.
If this were like a previous incarnation of MMO then this would not be possible.

The most important thing though? We both play for the enjoyment of the game itself. We don't play to collect gear, or grow a character in an imaginary world. This gets us no credibility in the real world. Our bosses don't care if we spent 700 hours grinding out on an NM for a super rare end-game item. FF14 is a game, and the value that is has in our lives is that we can come home, jump into a fantastic world with great lore, and just go punch, burn, shoot, whatever a bunch of monsters. When game time is over and the real world keeps us busy for days or weeks, we know at any point we can jump straight back in where we left off and we have not been left behind. It's not a job. It's not a second life. It's a form of entertainment and relaxation we can come and go as our busy adult lives dictate, and there is no negative consequence in game for that.

So thank you FF for evolving and adapting with your consumer base, and finding a way to work with the lives of older gamers, and not just time-rich teens.

You need to stop being under this impression that the FFXIV development team owes anything to FFXI/1.0 players at all. For 1.0, no one had to pay subscription till the last few months of the game's life span and all 1.0 users got 2.0 for free, got a discount on their subscription, and got legacy perks. Also because "some", not all mind you who played their previous MMO does not mean they have to make FFXIV in your likeness. That is asinine thinking from a business perspective, unless their intent was only a niche audience. Especially the fact that FFXI is still very much a thing.

To make a successful MMO they need to work out a balance of the casual market, midcore, and hardcore to have a solid game, not cater to a niche past. If anything, SE needs to go play WoW: Legion and get some pointers on how to make fun and more balanced content.

The other part is that every time someone asked for something different than the current formula, he replied that the formula is good because we would complain if we had less. Of course we'll be pissed if you give us less content...

I'm sure you can have a lot of different system working in an MMO. FFXI changed its gearing system a lot during its lifespan. WoW did too.

I've think no matter what yoshi says that people are going to complain. He was being honest and IMO he is right.

New players are required to keep the game afloat which is why so many new player tools were added.

I can empathize with a few camps of players along the spectrum here.

15+ years ago, I wouldn't have considered the current FFXIV formula my cup of tea which was a game that rewarded a player more the greater the commitment and having a more competitive streak I like the feel of being at the head of the pack. I'd absolutely hate the idea that someone could easy 'catch up' to me.

Today, I have limited time to play due to commitments. Catch up mechs are a lifesaver when I get sucked into projects. I can spend less of the additional 'overtime' for the game to patch back lost time. Gear is now a means to experience the game; no longer for my character ego.

On difficulty, I felt that Weeping City of Mhach was at a good level to remain engaging. Hope more content is around that balance.

For the folks who also work and have family and can commit that time to the game such that you don't need catch up mechanics, you have my greatest envy. My commitments take me away from the game sometime for weeks. I always feel relieved I can come back and still play with everyone.

For those who are closer to my 15+ years ago self, I do fully understand why you may hate me and insist "If you can't spend the time, don't play an MMO". But here it is: FFXIV. An MMO that I can play. I'd like to hold on to that tight. Sorry that I will be imposing on you longer. m(_ _)m

Basically, if you're bored with the tome system, the rapid gear decay and the predictability of content in each patch, you know that it will only be worse and worse.

And people are suprised because some find this reaction...innapropriate ?

That reveals that he's very down to earth. It's been said before: there isn't a single game in the world that can keep you entertained for every single day of the year, 24/7. First, because it's not possible to make that much content (unless you just give people tons of mindless, boring grind), and second because it's normal to get tired and need a break from time to time. Every developer should know that their game can't be played forever and ever. They should also know that people have lives, and that having lives is good.

The problem is that some players seem to truly expect a single game to keep their attention forever, every day of their lives, and that's an absurd mistake and not the devs' fault. (Neither it's the devs' fault that said players don't seem to know how to have fun with the things we do have).

As for the OP, I join the group of people who aren't pleased about the way you worded things. I love this game, it hasn't turned its back on me; quite the contrary, this game saved me from completely hating online games after my past experiences. Please do not speak for me or for anyone else when you voice your personal tastes and complaints. It's getting really tiring.

Ok, so as I don't misspeak, what exact quote have you been referencing? I don't want to respond by quoting the wrong quote here. I've read the interview as well and no where does he say anything like that. Burnout isn't somehow a unique issue XIV faces, it exist in every MMO, every game. Content creators can literally only create so much content in a given time. Consumption will always outpace creation. I don't exactly know what you would suggest he does to fix it aside from make more content, faster. Otherwise, if you're referencing something that hasn't been addressed, feel free to specify.

What's wrong with the predictability of the patch content? At least you know how long you have to wait if you want a new raid or a new Warring Triad Trial. And there's always a little something more. Sure it's not always the size of ninja or the Gold Saucer, but those were exceptions teased long in advance.

It may of not been the best way for him to word it, but he isn't wrong. It is impossible to keep people completely engaged for the maximum amount of the patch time without putting more RNG measures into the game, which ends up making it frustrating in it's own right and addicting in a bad way. Maybe he shouldn't of said "play other games", but it isn't far from the truth. I am sure the team makes the content in attempts to make as much of it as you can for that patch cycle.

If you design properly. The problem with badbreathx3 is a simple math problem.

If boss does move A, you should be able to at the very least recover to neutral with some kind of counter or answer. Bad breath was a move that hurt you deeply but didn't kill you but by the time another TP move arrived you might not have yet fully recovered.

All you have to do is make sure each move or mechanic can be answered and reset to neutral before another mechanic is thrown at you. Or that if multiple mechanics are thrown at once. That none of them combined auto kill you. Or make it where if you at least successfully do 1-2 out of the 3 you survive and can reset to neutral.

i personally believe that replayability is more important than the negatives.

He has designed a game that means you can take breaks. Whether that be for life or other games.

Square produce multiple games. He understands that when FF15 comes out people will stop playing in order to play the new FF. Why should this be considered a bad thing?

Gamers have finite time and the company he works for produces multiple games for varying genres. If he was naive enough to think he could hold a monopoly on the gaming time of his player-base then he would be a terrible producer. That is not how business works and that is now how consumers work.


He understands people want variety and he can't put Pokemon into FF14 - so if you want Pokemon, go play Pokemon.
He understands that in the current climate, to hold people to ransom and say 'you have to play this game all the time in order to keep up' will not work. People will go play their other games and just won't resub to ff14 because they are now too far behind.

Instead he says 'It's ok to go play your other games, like Tomb Raider, or Racing X. FF14 will not give you these things as it is it's own world. When you have finished with them, we will be here to welcome you back and you can jump right back in with no stress of trying to catch up'

He is selling FF14 on it's merits, and one of it's merits is it's come and go playstyle.

Sometimes I do not understand this sudden bursts of negativity towards Yoshi. I wonder what you will say when Yoshi indeed turns his back away. He didn't. This game is his career's greatest achievement and he will not abandon it to rot like that. The game needs a constant flow of new players to stay alive and till now Yoshi is doing it fine. Sure nothing is perfect and there are many areas the game can improve but saying he turned his back is a arrogant and plain wrong. @Aillith ia right. Some people forget this.

The shutdown was specified to 1.0
They would have still worked on ARR even with an earlier server down for 1.0

And like ARR, XIV 1.0 was not like XI. Even in the 1.0 forum people were against people who wanted XIV to be more like XI.

I'm an FFXIV 1.0 and former short-term FFXI player. I outlasted my entire linkshell back then, suffering through the worst of the game and persevering to the point that the game improved and I was able to grow my LS and then FC into one of the most active communities on Sarg. Loved FFXI and FFXIV1.x as they were then despite their flaws, love this game as it is now despite the things I personally don't care for. I don't think I'm owed anything other than what I got originally - the legacy chocobo, the tattoo on my character, stuff like that. That was our thanks. If you wanted to be eternally catered to then you shouldn't have spent your time supporting a game that was getting reinvented from scratch based on majority opinion.

We got more than enough. Seriously. People beg for our exclusive stuff, but still, you want more. We got to actually have a say in what happened in XIV 2.x through player surveys. I would love those to come back, no doubt, but any expectation that legacy players should get priority placement in any way other than the exclusives we were promised from the start (which we got) is incredibly selfish.

So if you're asking if he has turned his back on the players, no, not at all. I do feel it would be excellent to see another official player survey from SE so they can get a better feel for what the players want, but in no way do I feel that Yoshi isn't trying to make the game that he and his team feel will serve their subscriptions (ie, player satisfaction) best.

While some suggestions or concerns are valid, a lot though focus on the negative side rather than positive. Yoshi said at first that rebuilding 14 was a gamble, it was a last ditch effort. Since 1.0 had great elements he had to play it safe. It is what most would have done in his situation. Now that things are up and going he can take small steps into the direction he wants. Same time, there's always someone higher up than he is that has no real clue about the gamer-base but knows what will make money at least for the time being. When those two clash in ideas, money will always win...

Me too :) I started playing in 2012 near the end of v1 and I still play every day, no breaks from the game to sit out waiting for patches.

I participate in every kind of content. Late into the 3.3x cycle my goal became catching every fish in the game, and I achieved it on the last day before maintenance \o/.

3.4 is going to keep me very busy with crafting, and then working on my anima weapons and Palace 200-floor challenge in 3.45.

Which difficulty? I don't know about you, but this is in my opinion the second most difficult FF game only after XI. Final Fantasy isn't exactly a franchise known for its difficulty... And yes, I do admit that the difficulty here is mostly to find 7 other people who are good, but that alone puts it into an entirely different realm than other FF titles in terms of difficulty.

I get what your saying, but if I have to pay 12$ monthly to play a game that content suddenly turns into a pointless grind in less than a week with a high lack of midcore content to keep me going, and the impending gear drops from later patches making your previous gear useless as you only need the minimal gear to progress through anything, whats to stop these casual players from reaching that point of dissapointment as well? I'm guessing its the community, perhaps fan fanatics, but to what extent really? I know fans of Fial Fantasy and they'll tell me the same thing about this game and they've been playing as long as I have and more (since Beta for me, legacy players for others). I see more RMT on other servers, which I bet SE actually rely on some for that extra buck. After all, I think they stopped players from sending whispers on trial accounts so RMT has to pay to make their cash.

My point of this is, your right about those metrics, because we haven't had enough time for those actual number of casuals to get to that peak point. When they reach it you'll see the slight change, and no, no amount of PS3 relief of limitations is gonna stop it when it happens. Yoshi can do what he wants, he's aware his ego had the best of him before, it has the best of him now but others are encouraging it this time. For what reason I have no damn clue, probably the hair *shrugs*. I'll just relax with my friends till the fun stops for them, its already have for me, but they make it more tolerable. And no, I don't RP. Best thing to do is to let others enjoy what they can, because the game does one thing right, it tells a good story.

Maybe difficulty isn't the word I was looking for, more like rewards for you exploration, not like Omega Weapon in FF7 but more like the Secret Dungeon in FF1, the Ultima Weapons that actually meant something in the series or the neat Garment Grids in FFX-2 that you can get by exploring a dungeon or performing some events differently. Though in tems of difficulty, yeah this game is pretty darn easy. I mean like, FFX-2 easy IF you ignore the extra stuff, otherwise your met with some hard content that will annoy you. Crisis Core is pretty simple to but its not your average FF game to compare but its pretty tough on those extra missions, not including the goofy ones (squats anyone?) FF6 is one of the FFs I haven't beaten yet and to me is one if not the hardest I played. I heard 13 was tough too, but I only made it to the first boss and died because learning shet, and got bored of the straight line paths almost instantly. I blame Final Hallway :/

I find that Casual - Midcore- Hardcore not so black and white. For many players Alexander normal is Midcore and truely dificult stuff just by the fact of having "some" mechanic. For me Primals Ex are Midcore (even tho i usually try it after they are added to DF, so the team is usually overgeared a bit).

seems pretty black and white to me, those people are just bad.

DF - Casual
PF - Midcore
Static - Hardcore

Honestly, OP, your English isn't bad, but in truth you didn't offer any suggestions. You just keep focusing on how it isn't like XI, or caters to much to X playerbase, but you weren't able to reveal how something like "Combat Skill" could fit into XIV, or fit into a game without feeling like a grind.

Combat Skill which in essence is "horizontal progression" of leveling a character is pretty much the same mindset as Yokai FATE farming. Mindless content beating up the same creature/repeating the same FATE in hopes of RNG gracing you with what you are hoping for.

Now let's go to the longevity of content. XIV content doesn't have the same longevity as XI for good reasons, because XIV doesn't lock you out of Dynamis for 3.5 days(now daily. . . but still Daily), and every other content released in XI had daily limits, or the need to farm for 12hrs yes 12hrs waiting for timed NMs that you had to fight with others against in hopes of being able to get the drop you want.

XIV cuts out all that fat, what players think they miss are those moments of just doing nothing but waiting for something to spawn, or fighting others for a spawn and getting nothing out of it for waiting 5hrs. But it was honestly cheap mechanics used to increase the longevity of content.

What people think they miss from other MMO, they would actually be coming back and saying how "it's to much grind." "I don't have time to wait this much." "This needs to be faster." "We need more options to get loot that aren't RNG" etc etc. People think they miss the stuff from older MMOs and they think newer MMOs are the bane of existence.

But sadly it's hard to have a successful horizontal concept in an MMO, unless you just made it part of PVP or another part of the game that didn't force people to play that way. It's just hard to execute. because at the end of the day, I"d rather have to go through VU phases of regearing my job to be stronger again than to have to spend 6 months trying to get a piece of gear that came when the game first went live because it's a 36hr spawn with a 2% drop rate and there are at least 10 other people I"m camping against in hope of getting the drop and in the 2 weeks I"ve been trying on and off I haven't even been able to claim it. That isn't fun, but people thought that was fun. Isn't it more fun to actually play the game with what the developers introduce into the game instead of the metagame of wasted time camping and fighting against others in an artificial PVP setting?

Things like that are why I used to hate MMORPGs years back, and why I'm playing FFXIV nowadays *laughs*. That kind of punishment called content was never fun for me, and RNG has never been kind to me either no matter how hard I've tried. And it's definitely not a lack of free time from my part, as I have plenty of that. It's just... not fun @_@;

Im loving the game so far! Proper happy that YOSHI P and team are listening to most of our requests.

I dunno what is considered "midcore" content but this game seriously lacks "social" content in my opinion. I been on my server forever and I literally just don't know anyone beyond the friends i play with from ffxi and its not cause I don't talk. There's just not enough social/serverside content. I guess the Duty finder kinda enabled this player mentality of who cares about all these ppl, i can just random into anything I want anyway. I always admit I'm an old ffxi player upfront, I am. This is probably shellshock from playing that game and coming to this one where literally there is just no reason to actually interact with anyone beyond: "hey do you need this, cause I do to!". Yes that ocurred in ffxi but there was a million other reasons and people actually offered to do stuff with other people at no gain whatsoever, sometimes you just ran into people you have met before while doing stuff. There's no randomness in this game, no chance encounters, even if you meet someone who might be cool to chat with in DF... High probability they aren't even on your server.

This game has alot of core problems that are currently ruining it for me. I'll list them all here but in reality, there's no way the games core is going to change this far down the road unless for some reason a super majority of the playerbase decided to quit which is lol worthy at best.

1. The ilvl system. I cannot stress enough how strongly I detest this bullshit of a gear system and whoever created it. The difference between a ilvl 200 and a Ilvl240 player is like the difference between a car and a sportcar in terms of power. You can't do drastic changes like this in a game for just gear cause that makes everything before it... Wait for it... USELESS. All the content designed for anything before it will also become... POINTLESS. One of the things I liked about ffxi was gear relevance, it remained useful for a very long time. Years after sky release, the sky gear was still useful, even augmentable with synergy making it useful for even longer and revived sky again for enthusiasts. I quit ffxi shortly before they started the ilvl bs but it didn't effect the player as much as stats in this game do which leads to...

2. Stats in this game literally determine what you are capable of, more so than your player level. Think back to your first gearset at level 60, now look at your current gearset. There's no way in hell you could have even attempted current content with your past gears. This is why they use ilvl requirements, thanks to the lovely ilvl system. In ffxi, players could bring down higher level monsters with meager gear sets if they were skilled enough. Gear didn't determine what you are capable of, instead it augmented your abilities or overall potential, even more so in larger groups.

3. The amount of content at any given time that is relevant or useful to do is low, even yoshi knows this to be true. He encourages breaks currently.

4. Gearing up 2 or more main classes is impossible for some people and very time consuming for others unless you can participate in all content regularly, this means completing savage regularly as well. Another way to die of boredom is to do 2 or more characters grinding tomestones every week if that's your cup of tea. I'd rather watch grass grow personally.

5. Why is there still no fenrir bike in the game, just put it in already. They can have flying jet turtles but I can't have a bike just cause you think its slow and some think its ugly and kills immersion/lore? Ok so I can't have that motorcycle, there's alot of other FF themed motorcycles to pick from and we all know magitek could easily fit a bike.

Oh my god. No, he did not "encourage" breaks. All he said was, if you've run out of stuff to do, take a break and go play another game. What this guy said. Yoshi-P also said he would encourage you to explore content in the game you may not normally do like level up other jobs, craft, PvP, and so on. If there are only particular aspects about FFXIV you like and feel burnt out on them, then play another game.

Or quit or wait for a New patch to Get help because nobody is on for duty finder or wait for people to help you out when they done New content. Thats what i Got told.

I know this seems lazy and such, but what are the main argument points that been said, I tired to read this stuff but I got bored. The only thing I'm kinda got out of this is something content viability and something about glamour being stupid( btw it's not, Glamour is the real end game raid), did I get those parts right at least?

Fashion Fantasy 14 sounds about right. Kinda sad to me that people care more about new glamour, minions, mounts, and more yo-kai watch chinsy bs then getting new meaningful content and more interesting ways to grow our characters.

The way that Yoshi-P said "it's alright to go play other games" is really, really concerning to me. Even if he's lying he should at least say something like "we've got stuff planned don't worry." Really Yoshi should be the dealer selling me crack so I can get my fix (as a certain podcast said xD). The whole resub for a patch then unsub thing is really unacceptable, they need to hang on to every sub they can.

Playing XI for years as a teenager and young adult, I was able to devote most of my free time to all of the end game content - camping kings, limbus, dynamis, salvage, etc. now that I am older and have a family that I need to devote time to, it is nice having a final fantasy game that I can play more casually and not feel like i'm 3 steps behind everyone else. With that said, I really do not enjoy the constant grind to upgrade gear, it is very repetitive and I feel like the developers nerf things like relic weapon achievements too quickly. I wish the community on individual servers was more tight-knit than it is but I suppose that is the trade off of not having to shout in lower jeuno or white gate for 5 hours looking for a tank or healer for a party.Feels like there should be SOME way to come to a middle ground. The gear recycling wouldn't even be so bad with a closer community instead of half of the players emptying out 1-2 months before the next patch. I keep my sub though because I do still enjoy XIV and it has enough positives going for it but there are things that could be improved just like anything else, don't have a desire to play other games.

I think I read something like "players nowadays don't have time for character progression or growth elements so we're growing characters solely through gear (ilvl)."

If that's true then why is there a weekly cap on tomestones? We have enough time to grind out entire gearsets but not anything else?

This is exactly the problem, and a main point of the OP post. I will not speak for anyone but myself but the glamour game became very tired a long time ago.

I think everyone on the boards here knows I'm one of the game's more devoted players. I don't feel as though Yoshi's "turned his back" on us at all. But I do feel like this isn't the type of game you really enjoy.

I spent several years on FFXI, too, and I do hope the XIV team continues to look to FFXI for inspiration on content. Here are a few ways they've already done that:

• Exploratory Missions: Diadem shared a lot in common with FFXI's Dynamis. It was focused on chainkilling monsters with relatively low drop rates and had somewhat arcane spawn conditions for the higher tiered monsters (like a streamlined version of Salvage rare bosses). The random nature of the stats were reminiscent of the game's later Augment systems that were added at the 99-cap that were randomly generated from a set pool. Even the three difficulties (Easy/Medium/Hard) with better rewards from higher difficulties, was reminiscent of later innovations in FFXI that did the same thing in Seekers of Adoulin. Unfortunately, Diadem didn't port over flawlessly in terms of execution, and they've had to go back and re-examine how to implement future Missions.
• Deep Dungeon: PotD shares a number of elements with Salvage and Nyzul Isle, with artificial character strength limitations, porimanders (which are similar to the temporary items in the two from FFXI). The tiered chest structures are reminiscent of FFXI's Abyssea, and their random nature is very much in keeping with FFXI's older style of grind extension. The new addition of the rare chests in 3.4 is similar to the old ??? Items you could get in Nyzul, too.
• Zodiac/Anima Weapons: These are, naturally, quite reminiscent of the Relic/Mythic/Empyrean weapon quests in FFXI, which were 99% arduous grind and 1% neat cutscenes. While the FFXI analogues did generally involve tougher content at various stages, the FFXIV ones are designed for a game that caters to a much more laid back playerbase.
• Aquapolis: This is in some ways a more casual version of Burning Circle NMs from XI—it's primarily a money-making activity with another item needed for entry, and the random nature of the rewards can either heavily reward you or leave you with nothing useful to speak of.

Those are really just off the top of my head. They aren't ignoring what was done in FFXI at all, but it's important to remember that they have to 1) make sure the stuff isn't identical to what was in XI and 2) adapt concepts and content styles from XI in a way that fits into FFXIV's framework, which is entirely different from XI's.

I'm a former XI player, a former 1.0 player, and a former alpha tester for 2.0.

What Yoshi P and the team have created so far in 3.0 is pretty much what I want out of an MMO. I'm not a spring chicken any more and I can't devote hours and hours to raid grinding. I'm not a PVP fan so.... that doesn't matter much to me, but I know it matters to a lot of people.

I enjoy the story, the graphics, and the limited sandbox elements of the game. I deal with the grind because I do like to make sure I'm pulling my weight in content. I like leveling and I'm now 12 levels from all 60s. I like crafting. I deal with gathering to fuel my crafting.

What we need more of are the fill-the-gaps activities, the sandbox things, like housing and glamours. The screenshot and glamour community alone occupies a lot of my between patch time. We don't need Final Minecraft Fantasy, but more sandbox activities will go a long way to alleviating boredom for players like me.

What I want the most in this game is nothing any dev could ever give me. 7 other ppl that I can play the game with, that like it as much as I do and know how to play it. well let's say 6 others cause I have 1 person that falls in this category.

I stick around in the game cause I like the social aspect of people that share same interest as me cause it not the content 3 years later the patches just seem like the same content repackaged with a new bow.
