Have you played much low level duty roulette? I don't think playing your class "well" usually happens till after 50 anyhow. Besides, DPS>Heals is as big a transition as any and I don't see any more SCH that can't play their job properly than any other job.

Even if they went CNJ>Tank (although I think CNJ>DPS would be more appropriate), your tanking abilities are going to be primarily based on DPS skills you're used to using anyway. The only change is 5 extra abilities you have to figure out how to use. I'd imagine it's much easier to learn to switch roles when most of your abilities are the same, than when you're learning a whole new suite of abilities and cooldowns.

BRD has already proven there is a place for support DPS. RDM could easily be a melee version that must mix melee & spell casts for max potential. Weaker DPS overall, but with the ability to restore mana and/or TP via skills like refresh. Either as its own class or a GLD subjob.

Also, if they remove classes and make it jobs only, who gets the Arcanist skills? Summoner or Scholar?

The guilds and the classes in the game really necessitate that they keep them up until Level 30. After that, you should simply level up with your job stones. All classes would cap at 30. Each class could then spawn different jobs, maybe two a piece?

I agree the classes feel well thought out until the job hits, then it is an afterthought at best.

All classes currently do is hold back flexibility of the job system. Summoner/Scholar for instance feel way to similar. They share all but 10 moves and 4 of those are summons. But if the Classes stopped at 30, you could really differentiate between the two.

DPS Scholar and Summoner should feel the same. Arcanist is a DPS class first so all DPSing done should be the same as if you were still playing Arcanist. But that's why Scholar and Summoner are different. They don't share the same role, your focus is entirely different. Imagine if Scholar was infact Necromancer. Then you can see why any other jobs branching from classes into the two of the same role wouldn't feel any different.

just add more skills to the classes, then give us skill points, or maybe/maybe not add a skill tree. it answers the complications for actions of the base classes.

or maybe let us customize the the class actions with skill pts. a simple example would be the gladiator's fast blade - adding 1 pt would be adding enmity effect.

all these ideas can also add a significant amount of depth to each class and job as well.

Yeah I know that, I'm a Summoner myself so I know the difference. But to use myself as an example, when I first levelled ACN I wanted SMN as I didn't have a DPS class. Well when I finally hit 50, I got my SMN, hooray. However I also had SCH, level 50, despite almost literally never once playing SCH. Not only that, but it was nearly i90 thanks to my WHM gear. So as the poster below mentions, if they were going to make Geomancer from Conjurer or whatever, people would instantly be level 50 (and even may have gear for it) despite not having a clue how to play the class. That makes zero sense.

I'm assuming ACN/SMN has taught you some level of pet control. That should help with fairy usage. You know about managing your Aetherflow charges. That's helpful. E4E and virus usage? In combat resurrect? Which spells to use when you want to DPS? All that's left is to point at the guy who is missing health and heal. That puts you at least at the same level of expertise as most players who ding 50. The fact that you already play WHM means you've probably got a head start over them as far as generally healing knowledge.

What's the problem? In terms of this game, you can also collect a full set of 90+ tanking gear while playing your WHM, level a new tank class to 50 via fates if you want, and then jump straight into any end game content you've cleared with your WHM. Being able ding 50 and jump straight into Levi X (or even coil 2 if you can find a group) without having tanked anything else endgame is probably a bigger "problem", but it's just how the duty system works.

Anyhow, like I said earlier, I haven't seen any more SCHs that can't figure out how to play their Job more than any other Job. So I don't think this is causing a problem in this game, regardless of whether or not it's "right".

I think that they have truly limited them self with assigning class/job based upon a weapon. What I mean is that right now, a paladin has a 1H sword... ok so what about red mage? What they should do is just base it all upon the soul crystals (job gems... whatever you want to call them). 1-30 Have one kind of a stone (ie CNJ), but be able to wield any weapon (pertaining to that class of course, but meant like staff, wand, or something similar), and at 30 be able to equip WHM or GEO stone to take on skills for that job and the ability to equip multiple weapons for that class. I know that a lot of people want 2H swords or scythes or something like that, but with their current system, a DRK could only really have one of those weapons. I just don't 100% agree with the weapon system. Good concept, just doesn't work as well for future proofing.

Armory system simply needs more space. With so many jobs and so many pieces the allotted space is quickly becoming insufficient.

I think that eventually they will be forced to do this. I don't understand why they thought this would somehow be MORE flexible than the way things worked in XI. In XI you just arbitrarily chose what job to play, and then you had access to all the abilities and weaponry that class was rated to use. Every job had one or two weapons they excelled with, but they weren't disallowed from using other weapons because of it and it left the door open to easily implement more classes that used those weapons, like Dancer who also uses daggers.

I hope the armory gets a major overhaul because as it stands right now, it's too limiting and it's going to cause them a lot more work. If they keep this system, not only will they have to come up with a brand new weapon for each individual job to switch to, but they will have to create all new weapons from 1-50 for that job to use instead of reusing low level weapons and just designing individual relics weaponry.

The "armory" is good as an inventory management tool. It's a terrible way to approach switching character classes.

I have always greatly resented the Armoury System.

Not just for skills, but weapons. It makes any kind of alternative weapon impossible, especially one for several jobs.

If i were to want to use a staff or a club on my Paladin, it should let me. Not instantly switch me to Conjurer or Thaumaturge. If i want a Great Sword that has PLD and WAR on the jobs, that's impossible with it too. Unique weapons? Nope, forget it. Any kind of ranged weapon in the ranged slot? Nope. Throwing pebbles then? nope. Can i use daggers? Nope. Not even if i ask really nicely? Nope.

On top of ofcourse as mentioned by the OP that any new "job" needs its own "class" or it's stuck with the exact 95% of the skills that the old base Class/Job has. Not to mention that due to it, Classes themselves have no real power and can only be used as prequisits for Jobs due to poor stats and incompatible equipment. This game could have had 17 jobs to play, and it would have been awesome. Now it has realistically has 9.

The Armoury System is old, archaic and limits this game immensely. I strongly feel that without it this game would be a hundredfold times better.

Also, i feel bad for whoever designed Rogue. They put in all this work only to have something that wont ever be used again after the first 30 levels have gone by.

We could have had a cool thief as well as a ninja. Now we have a Ninja and that weak -thing- they need to unlock it.

There have been a whole other changes of this scale in this game's history, this won't be something new to Yoshi-P's team.

There was the abolishment of Physical levels in early Version 1, the change of pretty much every ability in 1.19, the introduction of Jobs, the change of pretty much every ability with the release of Version 2.

They could do it as simply as making equipping a job stone change the effects of class abilities (the way SCH/SMN both have different effects for Summon I/II) eg changing the additional enmity of some GLA's abilities to endrain with a DRK stone equipped, or even change the base ability itself ie equipping a DRK stone changes Flash to Drainga and Provoke to Aspir or whatever.

Whatever they do it will be their own choice and will have aboloutely no relation to any one of the myriad suggestions we make here in the forums, so just relax and try to enjoy it, kiddos.

Actually, all these examples are quite possible with the armoury system. Both CNJ and THM have one-handed and two-handed variants of their weapons, so there's no reason GLA couldn't also.

Also, in version 1 we had throwing pebbles, tomahawks, javelins, throwing daggers...

You're thinking 'Armoury Chest' rather than Armoury System. The system has been around since 2010, the Chest was only introduced mid-beta for version 2.

Or, it's an MMO, and nothing is set in stone? The game can change how and when it wants to. 1.0 did that quite often, especially from around patch 1.18 onwards. And that was for the better.

And not thinking things through the first time? Nothing ever goes quite to plan the first time. But unlike the days of the past, where it was very hard to update a game once it was released, you can now try out a lot of different ideas and fix/change them after the initial release. MMOs do this a lot more often than other games, and is both a good thing and a point of contention when it comes to Alpha/Beta releases of MMOs.

Personally, I think it's a good sign that a game like this one has an open minded and flexible development direction that allows for big changes if they are needed. FFXI suffers a lot because it cannot do this any more. It tries to (like with the iLvl system it put in place), but it's not quite the same when the rest of the game doesn't really have that designed in mind.

Even in that game, a PLD wielding a staff as a primary weapon? The only time I saw a PLD use a staff was when they used an Earth Staff because they were using a kiting strategy, and a Sword/Shield would be useless. It wasn't because their skills were awesome with a staff.

Really, the Armoury System is fine in some regards, but not in others.

Being able to use skills from other classes is definitely a bonus - it's better than XI in that you can access more than 1 "sub job"; where it differs/struggles is that you are very limited to what skills you can use due to balancing.
Being able to switch weapons and change class/job immediately, and not need to go to a Moogle first, is definitely a pro (yes, this is actually defined as part of the Armoury System).

Where is does have problems is in the Class and Job aspect of it. What it should do is:

Class Name to level 30 > Job Name beyond Level 30, or once you unlock it. In this regard, it is like FF1. You reach a certain point in your class levelling experience, and it then becomes the Job name. So for 30 levels you are a Gladiator. You can keep levelling as a Gladiator until you do the first Job quest. At that point, Gladiator becomes Paladin and you keep growing then as a Paladin.

Or...

They go the FFXI-style route where you begin as a Paladin and remove the Classes segment of it. You can still use X-class skills from Warrior (which assimilates all of the Marauder skills as if they were simply Warrior's) and from White Mage. It just removes the current Class based system, but keeps the benefits of the Armoury System.

Either way, it becomes a system that works just fine and doesn't really change the way it "works" already. By "works", I mean as the players use it. The only big change that would be needed is with ACN and SCH/SMN. Of course, that could lead to the SMN changes that players often complain about and make SMN a more appealing job to the masses (those of us who are fine with current SMN might have to change our outlooks).

Its kind of a problem to solve, because either new jobs come from class and you have an instant max level when you have the class already leveled, or you unlock a new job and start at level1 meaning if a new player want to play for example a red mage (unlocked by WHM/BLM 50), it can't start as one right away. They wanted to move away from that at first, not sure about the future.

I'm really interested in what they will come up with, and hopefully the fan fests will cover this part a bit!

I'd also like to see the Jobs become the standard and just have classes removed. The quest lines would be a little different though and I really enjoy the silliness of some of the class quests compared to the more serious job quests. I say we remove it all and just let everyone be gentlemen. Hildibrand quest line is hilarious.

Rouge is thf. Exact same abilities a thf would end up having, it's literally just a different name. How can people be so dense? Get over it. Lol.

Also, leave the job system. It's nice. And no sub job, leave that in ffxi(I loved 11 but it's time to be different kiddies) , and please do NOT add new jobs to branch off classes, then they would already be lvl 50 and yeah... Just to much "nope" in that.

Why not? Not everything you do will require you to sword and board tank it. In XI, I'd use a GS quite often on pally, because it was fun and because when I was doing some solo things there was no reason I had to use a lower damage weapon. Some people dual-wielded with /nin, I preferred a two-handed sword with /sam and later on /dnc (though I guess you could dualwield with that as well - it's irrelevant anyway). That's not to say I wouldn't switch back to the A+ rated equipment when I got into a party - but this system where you can ONLY use this weapon in THIS job is so... it's just obnoxious.

I guess they way they can work around it is by making all new weapons per each class, but that just seems like SO MUCH more work than slapping a tag on existing weaponry so that low level stuff can continue to be created\used\etc. I still think that the job should be selected manually and then equipment that job can use equipped, not the equipment dictating the job. It's one of those things that wasn't broken and didn't need to be "fixed" in the new mmo.

As far as subjob... It's kind of already here, and already slightly annoying.

I don't anyone is asking for FFXI's system. Because this is yet another FF MMO, I think most players look to FFXI for comparisons sake first.

For me at least, FFXIs sub-job system was just more flavorful and interesting. You had a variety of options (some of course better/worse under a variety of circumstances). To some degree, the notion of "cross-classing" is very similar to sub-jobbing, except now you can pick abilities from each of the different classes as opposed to having abilities from one class. However, the current cross-class skills are very limited and don't provide that much of an impact on how you play your class/job. Therefore, the system is less flavorful, less exciting.

Currently, at least for me, the only thing flavorful about the system are Jobs. You have job specific quests, gear, etc... They certainly provide that Final Fantasy flavor and nostalgia. However, it pretty much stops there. The subtleties of what made the sub-job system interesting and fun are not captured by cross-classing (which in theory it should as you can bring in abilities from each class).

If anything, they should expand the cross-class ability list for classes (not necessarily jobs). This would further emphasize that jobs are intended to have very specific defined, focused roles and would still be preferred in group play. However, classes would provide more freedom but less focused and would be preferred in solo and some small party content.

Example: Imagine running around as a GLD and being able to summon carbuncle or being able to cast Fire 1 as a CNJ.

I don't think anyone is asking for complete freedom in being able to equip abilities. I think some of us would just like a bit more flavor and interest to the class and job systems.

Yes and no. If this was a game that had 90+ levels to overcome with 4 obsolete expansions, sure. XIV is young, though. We don't really need the brand new jobs to start off at level cap. In fact, I didn't understand why the class continued to level when you branched off into the job. It seemed like a missed opportunity for specialization. Level the job as the specialist, level the class as... I don't know, something else. Or just make it go away and kind of melt into the new job. I don't feel like there's much point in having both lancer and drg at 50 - what am I EVER going to use Lancer for again? Same with Conjurer and white mage. No one is asking me to bring the tree branch. They want Holy.

I would rather see the base clases *go away* than see new jobs branch from them. Or at least specialize them so they are useful. As it stands, most of the people I talk to and read here on the forums pretty much say they never feel the need to take off the soul crystal. That's a huge failing of this system that Yoshi-P tried so hard to preserve.

They made it TOO hard on themselves with only allowing 5 skills to determine two different jobs
on the same class. Only reason SMN and SCH worked was because one was a healer and the other
a dps. What would they do in the case of gladiator? The dps part would only have 5 different moves
than PLD and also how would they make it NOT a tank with the skill GLD already knows?

They have a lot of work ahead of them if they don't plan on changing the system. Classes are useless.

Its actually pretty simple. First of the 5 moves is a stance that changes the properties of certain GLA abilities (eg. removing enmity property). Or the same effect simply by equipping the job without need for a stance ability. Or you could have job abilities that combo off GLA abilities for DPS effects. I'm sure there are many other solutions too.

It's possible to get around these though. The question is whether people would like it or not.

They can introduce a skill that exchanges enmity on targets for damage that uses up alot of MP. Then the job would be able to spam halone combo and flash and hit this skill to deal high damage. Then they can use riot blade to regain MP and also introduce a riot blade finisher that needs positional and add a good effect that the player would always want up (strong dot?). Then we'll still have 3 skills left. They can add defense skill converters either as a buff or a stance where getting defense ups like rampart and sentinel would boost their attack instead. Not sure about bulwark/shield swipe/shield bash/shield lob though. Adding yet another skill to convert those is an option but it still boils down to whether the new job from gla should still have a shield or not. Or they can still leave it as is and let it exist like keen flurry.

Basically the play style of the class is pushing enmity as much as possible without drawing aggro and then using up mana to reduce it while dealing even more damage and using riot blade regularly to slow down mp loss.

Ok, but then we still run into the "where does the class end and the job begin" - at 50? After you have already abandoned the class at 30 to exclusively play as Paladin? It makes more sense to design new jobs from the ground up as their own identity than try to recycle Halone or whatever.

I'd rather see them remove classes. Change the "Class" name to the job name. Keep the crystal soul storylines that start at 30, but instead of it "unlocking" the advanced job you are learning from the final master or whatever. Each new job they add starts from the ground up as its own identity.

This would have the added benefit of stopping your progress until you unlock the soulstone. Then maybe we will see fewer people in 30+ dungeons that have no idea they can evolve to a job.

I've seen a black mage at lvl 50 who has zero idea on how to play his class. He would spam blizzard3 non stop and then randomly start randomly spamming thunder3 on single targets in aurum vale. I've even seen a dragoon that uses impulse drive...and then a full thrust, over and over. Just those 2 skills. You simply can't avoid these players unless the game makes a harsh check trial content when they learn a new skill. You'll always have players that simply have no interest in learning how their classes work.

Your way of doing it is basically just semantics. Plus, scholar and summoner exist. Going by the base class, scholar would be the one getting removed to make everyone uniform. You'd have to introduce a new guild for scholars and remove all their ACN skills because they'd just be clones. What would they even have in exchange? I'm actually pretty sure that it's the summoners who would rather have a rework and have actual summoner things to do instead of dots galore. Then there's the question on whether the smn should still have physick and resurrection when it's probably meant to be on sch first. How are you going to explain the cross class system? Pre-crystal jobs can cross class any skills but post crystal jobs can only cross class from 2 and it can only cross class from pre-crystal skills and only 5? Explain that by obtaining a soul of an ancient job user you now only gets to cross class 5 skills instead of 10?

If summoner gets the acn guild, their lore would not match at all, would we have to change the story? What about the gladiator and paladin story lines? Paladins fighting in the arena for money? Ala mhigan monks in uldah? Tribal warriors in pirate state? Ishgardian dragoons in gridania? Lost white magic practiced by low level magic users in gridania? Or black magic for that matter? Gridanian bards doing NO music until they suddenly learn it from some guy out in the woods? All of gridanian ranged military are bards? They're just 'lore' but they affect the system of levelling in the game. The job stories were designed to allow wild changes from the class lores that are based around the cities' lore and appearance.

That would be a good compromise i guess, you won't have a fully leveled job, but you wont start everytime from level 1.

2) it takes out the fun and enjoyment of taking some time relaxing, leveling a new job doing fun things.

Although 2 is more opinion, 1 still stands. We don't need people given 50 off the bat just because they have a class leveled up.

I didn't even really like that smn/sch did it. I originally used smn, got to about 40 then decided I wanted to try sch. Being smart, I went into low level dungeons and learned from the beginning as if I were low level. And fell in love with my sch. But most people won't do that. If they have a free level 50 you know what they'll do? They'll grab cheap i70-90 or gear with what they have and go jumping into content with no cares.

I'm holding out for the day when they decide to do something with Classes, or they axe them entirely. I've said it to others, but it feels like SE doesn't quite know what to do with certain aspects of the game, primarily classes. They say that classes are meant for solo play, but let's be honest, jobs are just too powerful to bother switching off of. They say that classes are meant to be more versatile, and yet they offer so few cross-class skills to give them that versatility. What bugs me the most,though, is that there is potential in classes, but SE refuses to let them reach it.

They say that classes are meant to be more versatile, and yet they offer so few cross-class skills to give them that versatility. What bugs me the most,though, is that there is potential in classes, but SE refuses to let them reach it.

Because if you give them too much potential they can end up outshining jobs...which would defeat the point of the jobs. I've said it once and I'll say it again. At the end of the day SE really should of never kept the class system when making ARR.

Problem is, they just did what we asked for, at least the majority of us. Keeping the armoury system was what people chose in the poll.

The armoury system is fine. Not sure why classes needed to stay to keep that feature. Functions the same with jobs.

Linking a weapon type to a job without keeping the actual class/job system is kind of a burden for the developpers. Everytime they will add a job, they will have to create a full range of weapon ( from the starting job level to end game). Thats a lot of time to design so much weapon! Switching job by equipping the correct job stone would be easier on that aspect.

It will be interesting to see what they will keep, and what they will change. There is multiple systems interacting with each other and it won't be an easy task to come up with something better.
