Soloed ALL of them. Didn't die once.
Soloed ALL of them. Didn't die once.
If you die on an alex map.
"You simply aren't worthy to wield me. Come back when you've become stronger" -zodiac relic
The issue is mob type behavior is inconsistent throughout the game.
We have bombs that self-destruct, bombs that don't.
We have bombs that can be stunned, bombs that can't. (this especially applies for dungeon bosses, some can be stunned some can't and those that can, have a party breaker mechanic that needs to be stun, but most tanks/stunners dont bother to remember and use up stuns for more damage output)
Etc.
The first time a player encounters Mythril Golem and those bombs spawn, your initial reaction is "OH SHOOT" then they don't move.... so if you were like me, i thought i would be safe as long as i don't go near them, thus avoiding any explosion.
...then they start moving.... and you know the rest.
The strategy is to kill those bombs ASAP when they appear and you should be fine. Take too long and they will start moving and explode when they are within proximity of you. each one deals about 1200 damage when they explode iirc. The good news. they are very easy to kill, try to focus them down one by one that way if you are a little bit slow in killing them you can survive 1-3 that explode on you.
Anyways, would be nice if we had consistency among mob types. Not the guess/check/playerdeath/remember what each mob can or can't do.
funny story. yesterday, I fought the golem that spawns the bombs, I decided to not even worry about the bombs this time. the first set took me down to about half health (i124 WAR w/dps accessories, ~6900 hp out of defiance). I thought f*** it, kept killing the golem, thinking, if it's like any other fight, if I kill him, the 'adds' disappear = I win lol. nope, killed the golem right as the bombs started charging my way. they blew me to hell, killing me lol. I noticed it didn't end the 'instance' and the chest was still sitting there all nice and ready to be claimed. I asked my FC if someone could come raise me, they did, and still got my alexandrite with 20 seconds to spare :D
Not quite true if u get raised in time u can get the chest still
http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Mysterious_Map
there's like 7 different things
none of them are hard
Also I'm SHOCKED no one's speaking about this but: take your damn chocobo with you! This is literally the ONLY thing the companion is good for!
The first map I did, I did die and didn't have my home point set to the zone. I was fairly irritated that I lost the chest, but live and learn I suppose. It is only one piece of Alex after all. I've only died one other time since then and I decided to just call for a raise, which worked perfectly.
Once you know how each mob works it's really not much of a problem to solo them. Unless I'm lagging. But if you feel like you're about to die, you can always run out of their aggro range and rechallenge whatever is left once your health goes back up.
Maps have worked this way since literally the day they were added. If you die the chest doesn't disappear. It's when you home point that it disappears. Get a friend to come res you in time and you will be fine.
I prefer the variety. God forbid we have something slightly different to make us think every once and a while.
Oh no! Something difficult with some penalty for failure, it must be broke! I died on one of my maps at the beginning, it sucked but I learned from it and moved on. Next time I was sure to have my choco and kill adds first. This is why we can't have nice things.
Beg to differ.

There's two problems with the Mysterious chests:
- You can inadvertedly pull the boss out of range, which resets it, but not the adds. (Any, but particularly affects the ones with adds)
- You die because you don't expect the adds (Cyclops and Golem)
The multi-spawn (4 Gargoyles, 3 Cocatrice, and 4 drakes) can not be killed one at a time. The only two that are easily soloable are the single Gelid Eye and the single Bomb. The rest, you're more likely to run out of time if you try to solo them due to the above. I blew two maps today due to getting spawns I hadn't seen before, for a total of 4 fails and 9 successes, solo.
Incorrect
I killed them solo with my bard every time they appeared, with plenty of time left.
The cockatrices you have to kill in a certain order or else you'll be stoned. Black, Yellow...then the other one, I think it goes.
I mean I can imagine having trouble being a healer or something, but you don't need to be the relic job to do them and...yeah.
Also, suuuuper necro LOL wait guess it isn't, i cant read.
Happened to me on my very first map. Got the coincounter and I ignored his bomb adds, which proceeded to blow up in face. This was in town too at Ceruleum so a bunch of people watched me die :(
It's okay because most people won't finish their weapon in 75 days (1 alex per day) anyway. I don't think most people have a ton of gil and/or materia laying around waiting for this. When I was working on mine, I spent a bunch of Tomes for extra maps to collect the Alexandrites earlier. I later regretted this because after I had the 75 total, I did not have the materia I wanted nor the gil to finish the job. It took me about a week or two extra in which I continued collecting Alexandrites before I was able to finally complete my weapon. The last ~20 materia or so are a real killer. It got to a point where I went around telling everyone "I'm up to the part where it doesn't matter how many Alexandrites I have because I can't afford the materia to meld them".
"This Thread has been a Public Service Announcement"
The more you know~
Note, I have no issues as a SCH, but I have DoTs ticking constantly regardless on what happens. Sure, I get petrified at times, but I just wait it out. Eos makes sure I don't die.
Also, yeah, I got killed my first one as well. My response was basically "Well, that's what I get for ignoring bomb adds..."
Also, how on earth does the Bombast one work? I really don't understand it. Never died, but I feel like I am missing a mechanic that explains why it's just so damn easy.
The Cockatrice one I actually lucked out earlier on because like the screenshot above I had less than 5 seconds remaining, and they didn't kill my chocobo.
But today I got the Cyclops and wiped due to the adds canceling the skills, then I got the Golem which I would have been fine on, until the adds all blew up at once that I wasn't expecting, and then I got the Morlboro after that one and was like ... Curse you RNGesus.
When it gets big, don't attack it at all. It'll shrink down and then you can spank it out. What the bomb is meant to do is punish those who just go full DPS and don't care about the damage they take. But yes, the bomb is one of the easiest. Smack it when it's small, sheathe weapon when it gets large, repeat.
Every time I scroll past this topic my brain autocompletes the title to "If you die during Alexandrite Map, you die for real!"
It's been driving me nuts.
That said, I'll be careful to prepare myself whenever I get around to doing my maps.
All Alex maps are fairly easy to solo if you know what to do. people usually wipe because they are not familiar with the mechanics.
And no, the multiple spawns one, you can kill them 1 at a time.
For adds, there is absolutely not much reason to be pulling them far, for the cyclops - you can wait for them to come to you. For the golem, I have yet seen the bombs spawn at a place where the main boss will reset, it has always been in range for me.
I have solo'd all maps on PLD/SCH/BLM with no problem, used sch most of the time when it first came out, and then later on build lights for PLD and BLM.
EDIT: I see you also mentioned the Malboro - that one you can remove the bind on yourself as a healer. The bad breath itself can be stunned/silenced/slept to avoid it.
I looked up your WHM at the moment, it is more geared than my SCH (VIT spec) when I took this video for the cyclops fight

While I just shrugged it off whenever I died (materia reqs still drive me nuts much much more than alexs)... I do agree that the difficulty levels of the alex maps are a bit inconsistent. I remember some felt more like a lv45 map, while with some others I was like "ok how the hell is this supposed to be solo'd??"... It's strange, and it can clearly confuse people.
so much work for a small part of a small upgrade item...
LOL, spot on to what happened to me the other day when I did this map. I had just started to think "this boss is going down real slow, maybe I should work on ad- INSTADEATH"
This is also how I learned that if you die during map quest, you lose everything. Duly noted.
Seeing as how I'm now at a much higher ilvl and can solo all of these maps with ease, I have to think back to when I was doing these the first time.
*I remember not having any issues with either the gargoyles, cockatrices or drakes (I even got stoned by the cockatrices and survived). I killed each one by one.
*The ogres were the easiest multiple mobs. You can even screw up and still save it.
*Gelid Eye is probably the easiest single mob due to the easy-to-dodge abilities.
*The Bombast was a pain because of the spike-damage it doles out, but it's manageable. I had some elixirs on hand just in case.
*Mythril Golem got me once, until I realized the bombs don't go away if you kill the golem first, and they don't do anything until moving in for the explosions.
*The succubus and her demon friends are fairly simple to down. No noticeable issues.
*Morbol's threat of Bad Breath is nullified via stunning.
*The Cyclops, however, gave me problems. The peapuks don't go down fast enough, and you have to deal with two waves of them while making sure you don't get hit by the Cyclops' AoEs. Also, he can't be stunned.
Another thing to consider is that it's not equal for each job. I did these mostly on DRG in the beginning, which afforded me two Stun moves and Elusive Jump (which removes bind in the morbol fight). On SMN, it's even easier, because Titan-Egi can tank for you. BLM was noticeably more challenging, but not impossible.
A chocobo companion is most useful in these, but you can always ask a friend to tag along, so long you both are in party when the treasure is discovered, both can attack the mobs.
Only the treasure map owner will earn an alex, the other person will earn Gil.
adding to the person above.
* Bomb seems like it wont explode if you stop attacking while it gets big. This includes skills, autoattacks, companions or other people in party doing any offensive action against it, after a while it just goes back to normal.
* Morbol's bad breath goes nearly at the end, binding you in front of it, but morbol itself can be stunned, so save a stun for it.
* The golem's bombs are homing but wont move at all for a long while, however that time is not long enough for you to kill the golem first and then the bombs, kill the bombs first.
* At the cockatrices, kill the blue one first. Thats the stoning one, the others 2 are paralysis and maybe stun or sleep, they wont excecute their skills before one of the 3 is dead.
* Cyclops is by far the most fun of the fights, but will require you have some experience AoEing with your job.
All of them should be soloable with the current ilvl100 solds sets, so save some solds for them before trying.
If you are playing with someone, and you for some reason die by the end, your friend can still res you so you can get your alex.
My SO tried her first map after getting Animus. Died due to never done any before, and how is super salty and gave up on Relic weapons. It's kind of a shit system; I mean, yeah the map crumbled. The chest is still there though. It's just right there! There! You were literally standing on it, you know it's there, who cares about the map? Doesn't make sense except to prolong the grind.
I solo Alex maps with my nin all the time.
If we going to bump this thread again...Hmm...
Here's my experience so far!
OVer 5 relics above Novus stage or further, so, tired of doing maps, SB, win gil for wasting it, and so.... All of my maps were doing solo, only died twice. Once it was with the golem, I had a strange bad feeling my first time when I noticed bombs not moving and being called 'foxy bomb'... Yet I continued hitting the golem and... Boom!
Second time was....My total nooby error, I was using PLD that day and thought (Hey! Let's see if... PLD nice single target damage with sword oath will make it easy-faster for this), so decided to do map with PLD, and I thought "Hey, there's no way PLD could be killed in map, isn't it? Except... Cyclops map... AND THEN... CYCLOPS MAP CAME... All of those little monsters didn't die at time, Circle of scorn was just too weak, the chocobo area attack is rarely used and at certain point it was more focused in healing itself and me than attacking.... Couldn't manage to kill the horde of mini monsters, PLD, area lacking.
May I point out that the alexandrite/coffer doesnt disapear if you are raised? Just make sure you're in a party with a whm sch or smn, or at least your chocobo out to last while you're being raised if not in party. Easy-peasy
You mean you're not supposed to just keep wailing on it and maybe pop a cd if you're bored? :3
There's a reason I always come back to Paladin or Warrior for these maps. I have yet to die soloing a single map on either tank class, even when I had less gear. Even the cyclops is no problem for a well geared tank. Use your cooldowns and abuse the hell out of Bloodbath and Circle of Scorn/Steel Cyclone on the adds. If you aren't all that well geared, just get someone to go with you. If you can't find someone you know, just throw a Party Finder up.
That seems like a huge overreaction to me, honestly.
alexandrite maps arent really that hard to solo only 1 ever gave me any trouble was the malboro looking 1 lol
