What other tank jobs could come to XIV?

They already said that adding second jobs can and likely will adjust some of the core class skills to work differently, eg GLA or MRD +emnity on skills could change to something more dps buff in the presence of the new soul crystal, allowing the current tanks to have a DPS option, similar could be done with current DPS's positional to change to be infront of mob + emnty on a tanking soul

The odds that they will add another 2hander tank type is pretty low. Especially considering how dismally the existing 2 hander tank type performs. I give that a big, two thumbs down!

However, I would enjoy a 2 hander dps.

However, SWTOR does provide insight on how to turn a previously ranged class into a tank. Similar to how you were wondering how to make a tank out of a dps class with few abilities, SWTOR did this to some extent when choosing your ac for Trooper/BH. If you take say Archer, add tanking modifiers to its abilites with 8-10 yard range, you now have a tank, in theory. To be fair, SWTOR had many more abilities to work with past when you chose your AC, but it is food for thought.

On the topic of other tanks, I would be shocked if Nin isn't a tank. The precedent has already been set from FFXI with it being an absorb/evasion tank, and I don't think it would be all that hard to imagine it in the context of FFXIV. It would be similar to War, but dualwield + evasion instead of block might be enough to distinguish it.

I believe that Samurai was actually initially conceived to be a parry tank when it was introduced into FFXI. I know SE was not anticipating Ninja to become a tanking class, and was intended to be a killing machine. Either way, I think Samurai would make an awesome tank.

That being said, I do like evade tanks, something like Thief or Dancer would be really awesome. Perhaps one of these being added to Pugilist to give it a tanking job?

I'd be down for Templar as a tank. Other classes such as Berserker and Dark Knight would be better fit as DPS jobs (to Marauder and Gladiator, respectively) imho, with minimal support tank capabilities.

"Break Abilities" also seem like a viable tool for a tank to have, such as weapon break or armor break. This could be a Knight class or even given to Samurai. XII-International actually had a class called Breaker.

I believe Samurai to be a parry/evasion/counter tank in the works. Wouldn't surprise me if it were the case.

Actuallly considering Odin hangs out in Gridania a Dark Knight starting there would make some sense.

As for the berserker that IS kinda the WAR schtick...

Overall though I'd like a magic knight style tank one that uses magic to gain threat and damage enemies while shielding themselves and allies while using weapons and heavy armor.

I am loving all of these comments about dark knight being a tank do you people even know what a dark knight job does comsumes ones hp to dull out damage. I for one pray and hope they never turn my favorite job into a tank I would be pissed.

While I can say they turned my favoritee job (Warrior) into a tank and I freaking loved it.. Yeah, Dark Knight as a Tank does not fit at all, they are like the polar opposite of the Paladin, why would they be tanking? Also, they can't be a lifesteal tank, since that area already belongs to Warrior, granted they aren't doing the lifesteal thing very well right now.

Yeah Yagrush when I saw they turned Warrior into a AOE tank I was shocked but it works I have seen some awsome warriors as tanks. I guess I can kinda see dark knights as a tank as much as I dont want to see them that way considering we only have two tank classes and I think I can see the life stealing tank thing happen if they made it work some how. Yeah warrior doesnt do a nearly good enough life steal job if you ask me though.

I like the hand jobs, need more of those.

I'd like to see SAM as a Parry based tank. A SAM with incredible dueling skills would be awesome. Things like Third Eye would be great. If the starting class was "Ronin" as Dyss mentioned above, I'd like to see a DPS branch that becomes NIN. One being the honorable duelist as tank, and the stealthy assassin as a DPS, or maybe do with NIN what may have originally have been intended in FFXI and make it a heavy debuff character (no tools plzzz) that severely weakens targets to certain types of damage with some positional burst damage, like Sneak Attack/Trick Attack.

DRK, I'd rather see as a DPS class based off GLA. If ACN branches into a healing or DPS job, I don't see why GLA can't have a tank and DPS job. DRK could have a stance that utilize threat/defense abilities from GLA to drain health. So Flash could turn into an AoE drain, and Provoke could be a single target drain. I'd like to see it wield greatswords, but it could still be a great DPS sword and shield job.

Yeah Kirth sounds good except for Great Sword I'd rather see dark knight wield a scythe or sword and shield.

Also, there's probably a musketeer or corsair job in the works like mentioned above. The Crossed Pistols is also a symbol available in the Free Company crests.

True I would like to see a ranged DPS limit break always wondered why we didnt get one and that its a healing one.

This is where they should just let the war be DPS and get a new tank in the game ninja would be good.

Posts #2 and #3 on this page have my ideas for a Thief class, with Assassin as DPS, and Ninja as tank. Since we aren't talking about DPS I won't go into the Assassin, but the Ninja is basically a tank that rotations between using debuffing potions to decrease dps (which would be useful in a 2 tank situation) for 1/3 of the time, then using powerful evasion abilities (short duration, 100% evasion chance) to mitigation damage until they can get their poisons working again.

I really like that concept of Class: Ronin, Job: Nina(DPS)/Samurai(Tank).

Also glad to see someone else agree with having DRK as DPS. Devs did mention a possible use of having a class equip a new weapon type and that be their job(like a current class equipping a Greatsword/Scythe and becoming a DRK).

Though Ninja and Samurai use different weapons (Kodachi and Katanas, respectively), so them branching out from the same class would be akward.

Just a proto-idea, but what if Ranged Tanks worked by Reverse kiting. Kind of like how Conjurers buy themselves some space with Fluid Aura.

for the DRK as tank he will surely steal hp, but don't hope to see it like the main part of him capacity, i means the warrior is already a tank that heal himself.

i see the DRK with a sort of darkness shroud, covering them and increasing them evasion parry, him main capacity will be to cripples enemy, stealing them stats from increase himself. using fear for reduce the damage the target do to the DRK and some dark power that will be insanely nice as tank mechanic.

for the SAM i see him like a Skill chain burster, for the one that have play FF11 imagine one class that can use the skill chain all alone, getting weaponskill automatically because he did use two before. like: doing one horizontal skill followed by a vertical resulting into a weapon skill cross slash, it's an simple idea, but it can be develloped into something more technical.
for the role, i see it like a slow hard hitter focus on critical hit, since it a technician, every slash he will do will try to get the best of it.

for a ranged tank it will be the worst idea possible, the melee dps will be destroyed by this mechanic. any sort of kitting result in a loose of dps of a lot especially with position in the skill!

No. They should let WAR be a tank and introduce additional tank classes.

I would like a tank that duel wields. May not necessary be MT but a back up for raids yet still powerful enough to stand up to most things. He'll the flames leader is a damn duel wielder.

I would love to see Dark knight for marauder and beast master for Gladiator. the shield and one-hander with the pet filling in other abilities such as helping heal or dps or even a meat shield. the Dark knight would be very similar to the warrior right now i just think it wouldn't be so much hp drain and more other stat drain to bolster its self and possibly the other people around it.

and with the issue that some people have said about the tanks having to much enmity to be a dps job they could just make it so when you equipped the job crystal the enmity portion went away

we have to see other Final fantasy series games how they are setup for tanking then make a class base on those.

That's. . .the MSK guild.

A Dark Knight? The abilities of a Dark Knight are already present in a MRD. The only future it has is as a MRD's second job.

I just would like to see a Spell-caster type of tanking. It opens the door for new things.

I can kind of see a Mystic Knight/Red Mage type tank. Non-holy magic usage and 1 or 2 handed sword with Enspell abilities. Maybe some cool Runic ability like Celes from FF6.

To be totally honest, SE did not think this whole class/job system through very well. And because of this they will have a difficult time adding any jobs to the current base classes.

If they had planned slightly ahead, they would have thought to stop ALL Class abilities and traits at level 30, and transfer every skill gained after that to the job side.

This would leave a very basic level 30 class with 30 levels worth of skill gap to build new skills around.

What you have now is a class that is 90% set in stone, with room for very little modification via job abilities.

I see a total revamp of all classes and jobs within 6 months, just to make things work in the long run.

Also they should not have released a single class with dual job capabilities....

Cecil in FFIV started out as a sword 'n' board damage dealer that spent his health to use powerful attacks. DRK would likely be a DPS variant of the GLD boasting offtanking capacity.

I think Dark Knight would be a perfect addition. A DPS for sure, heavy armor + high hp + hp sacrificing to up attack power. It would work out. I also think Templar would be a perfect role to add, spear weilding tanks would be nasty powerful and I for one would love to play one. Plus it would mix things up. I'm tired of having to tank just because I equip a sword, i for one love to be a spongy DPS that takes hits and dishes out tons of DMG. Dark Knight would be Ideal for this, Templar would be Ideal for a great new tank role. And of course Samurai would be phenomenonal, i love the Idea of Samurai. Red mage would be interisting as well, a magic focused Swordsman, I could get into that ;)

I'd like to see Red Mage as a tank modeled off their classic hybrid playstyle, not the FFXI buff/debuff setup. Fire, ice, and lightning for offense, one element specializing in single target enmity, one in AOE enmity, and one for raw attack power. Their White Mage type powers could be setup as their tank cooldowns, each spell specialized to deal with unique circumstances (Stopping a big hit, soaking up sustained damage, dampening enemy AOE damage for the party, etc.)

Yoshida stated in a interview that certain jobs would radically effect the moves of their base class to better adapt them to their roles (a "possible example" he gave was Dark Knight retooling Gladiator's tank moves into dps moves).

It still sounds a bit clunky, but at least suggests the class/job system is intended to be more flexible than the current jobs would suggest.

Machinist = Ranged tank that drops status effects MRD/LNC
Templar = Spear tank that can reflect damage, status immunity, haste, mp steal and uses a protective aura on . ACN/GLD
eg.
Lifebreak ~ Reduces incoming damage by 50% for 2 seconds, returning it 200% and granting a shield for the damage dealt. This can critical.
Astra ~ Clear yourself of all status effects
Haste ~ :p
Soul sphere ~ Steal MP and silence
Aura ~ reduces damage 20% Enmity gain is increased by 2.5 regenerate 7% health every 3s. Certain attacks grant you a shield.

Did you say Thief?? I'm very interested in this....and if what you say is true, thief could easily lead into an evasion tank role (so to keep it on about the thread)

Ninja would be perfect shadows and all seriously be honest we need another tank and ninja just makes sense
