Is it, really ? People used to mass-pull in there wearing i85 at best. With proportionnal dps and healing output.
Can confirm. Qarn HM is *minimum* ilvl synced to 80. if they were 105, they should have been fine. WAR naturaly TAKES more damage though- defiance doesnt reduce damage... and at 50, pretty sure they only really have foresight and vengeances for cooldowns for trash pulls... bloodbath too, but thats not a damage reduction.
even THEN, If i were that WAR, even in ilvl 80, I would sure as fluff pull everything the moment I saw a BLM... and then getting a SECOND after a DRG drops? yeah. I'm pulling everything. Even if I have to holmgang.
To counter the above BLM stories, I had one in Gubal HM who on big pulls would do the single-target rotation. Only the last pull did they use AoEs and... they flared a single mob. Seems the DRG spamming Ring of Thorns took 15mins to sink in...
Defiance increases HP and increases the health gained on healing spells, which works out to effectively the same thing as damage reduction.4
For example, say both tanks have 100 HP, and are fighting a mob that does 10 damage per hit.
A Paladin will have 100 HP and take 20% reduced damage, thus they will take 8 damage per hit. That means it will take 13 (12.5) attacks to kill the Paladin.
A Warrior will have 125 HP and takes 0% reduce damage, thus they will take 10 damage per hit. That means it will take 13 (12.5) attacks to kill the Warrior.
Say a cure gives a 8 health back, which perfectly counters the 8 damage per hit gained on the Paladin. On the Warrior, they will receive 9.6 HP back. Naturally, in this situation, the Paladin has a slight edge - except when the heal crits, where the Warrior has a slight edge.
The real difference is the number of defensive cooldowns that each job gets, but Warrior has a decent set of cooldowns if used well.
Ah! I will re-word my post with that- I admit, I was looking at the duty entry. I did not feel like actually queuing for it only to drop the group and leave them in a slump. I wouldn't want someone to end up here complaining about a certain tank dropping at the sight of Qarn! I assumed the ilvl listed was the sync. I apologize.
Well this isn't incorrect. Rather, I was mentioning the lack of damage reduction as a response to "being squishy". Without cooldowns, that .4 difference can end up being a thing sometimes, depending on how many numbers are involved. that .4 can eventually add up to an 8, meaning an additional heal would be lost/needed.
Then again, its always hard to apply static math to DF. sometimes its better, alot of times it's worse. after all, a PLD actually getting a heal for 8 vs a WAR that only gets a heal for 8 when it's boosted means the PLD ends up winning that as well. or flipped. whichever.
I do rather appreciate how even the tanks are in the tanking slot.
When Qarn was released Poetics(i120) were released at the same time. The average item level was well above i85 at that point for a lot of players. Even players who were around i100 at least had their accessories up to par. So I doubt people mass-pulled "in wearing i85 at best". Soldiery(i100) has been out since 2.2 (Qarn was released in 2.4) at this point, so.
I wasn't imagining that the tank was squishier than anything I have seen in a while. They couldn't even take 5 hits without dropping dead. They were at 50% HP and dropped dead within 1 Holy.
Being 5 items levels above the minimum doesn't make you tanky enough to mass pull most end game dungeons. Even if i did (again it doesn't) it doesn't mean you should. It comes down to how each player plays. Hell, you just literally posted a story on the previous page that shows that item level doesn't mean things are always going to go as planned or how they should.
Edit: Anyway the average item level at level 50 hasn't been 90, not to mention 85, for over two and a half years. Way before Qarn Hard came out. So using i85 as a bench mark of how people ran it when it was first released is not only false information, but frankly something that rarely ever happened.
Alright. Since this is being leveled at me, this is actually perfect. I reposted this story here to be fun. The point of the story (that was editted out, as it wasn't necessary for this thread) was in response to tanks being REQUIRED to pull large packs. So a case such as this actually helps prop up why a tank SHOULDN'T be required to pull everything in sight.Though I suppose it would seem rather hypocritical now that it would seem I'm on the other side of the fence. So when I posted, I put myself in the WAR's shoes-
WAR/WHM/BLM/BLM perfect AoE comp. I've been pressured/demanded to always pull big. I'm at ilvl sync(I was wrong on this one, but this is my thought process at the time).
On paper, there's no reason why I should be mass pulling, no?
In light of 105 NOT being synced changes my perception on the situation, though.
Just as a side note, ilvl doesnt actually translate into tankiness. One could be in full i270 armor and only level 1 accessories- they would lose alot of VIT/secondaries, yes, but accessories dont grant defense. They would have pretty low ilvl comparatively, but still be relatively tanky. In this particular case, it was said the ARMOR (what gives the defense) was ilvl 125HQ. I would say thats PRETTY close to 130 defense.
Unless I'm misinformed about how ilvl sync works. again.
...Brayflox normal with a tank that had on some level 1 accessories. and a couple of level 15 ones too.
It was not a fun time. But I stuck with it because I am that stubborn. One of the DPS left because of it I believe, but they were replaced with another rather quickly.
You seem to be assuming the tank in the story was competent. Try to think about what you'd have to do to be that squishy.
Most likely they weren't positioning correctly and getting hit in the flank/rear. While simultaneously not using any (defensive) cooldowns -- I'd bet they had Berserk and Maim running. Not to mention getting hit by multiple aoes. It wouldn't surprise me if they weren't in Deliverance either. Finally, there is a strong likelihood they were wearing broken gear.
It really takes some effort to die to two trash mobs as a tank in under two cooldowns.
Sorry for the noobish question but I think this time I'll finally get an answer: when are you supposed to stun? Ever since that dungeon came out I always got mixed responses saying to stun before the laser appears or after, nothing ever worked so after a while I gave up trying.
It may have been because the tank (or other party members) would stun it and when I tried to stun (as monk) it was already resistant? I don't know, now I just do level 50 roulette as a scholar so I don't have any means to stun... It would still be nice to know tho. >_<
Edit: I am asking when to stun the last boss of Qarn HM.
And for my story... Well, I almost capped tomes of scripture just by doing C4 to get my last shaft. I finally got the drop but I am not willing to repeat the experience.
I noticed I was not getting heals as a tank. Thought maybe healer knows when to heal me.
My HP went really low. I see the healer casting cure but not on me.
Then I realized, he's been healing himself this entire time.
I honestly don't see what a raid BLM, who presumably has better gear, food, and potions than me, as well as a static who's willing to work with them to make their rotation easier, does in A12S, has anything to do with what I or any other BLM does in DF with random people.
In any case, I realised that if that BLM in the original ARF run was alternating between Blizzard/Fire III, in a cruel mockery of the BLM level 50 rotation, they should've included Thunder in there as well. In the interests of not derailing the thread, I'm going to drop it.
In other news, landed in Bismarck HM (which really just means Bismarck Normal), as BLM, with an AST and a new SCH.
We managed to wipe on the first try, because the SCH got themselves killed, then the AST, and there was so much salt coming from the AST, I could've sliced up a Lalafell and made some awesome popoto chips.
Quoth this AST: "I only heal when I have to." I suppose that translates to, "I'll leave all the healing to my co-healer, who's new to the fight, continue DPSing even when they die, get myself killed for a lack of heals, and then start raging on my co-healer and calling everyone else in the party names for not being able to heal themselves. Also, forget about casting cards." And that is what a true AST should always do!
Welp, it's great to know I've been playing AST wrong all this time! Spread the news, guys!
EDIT: Aaaand just got out of a Brayflox HM run as BLM, with a WAR, AST, and mentor NIN, in which the AST, once again, never once used Royal Road, gave me a Spire, and generally did nothing but stand around throwing out enough Benefic IIs to run out of MP and necessitate using Luminiferous Aether. This with a WAR who wasn't even doing particularly large pulls. And god forbid that any debuffs should be cleansed.
But no, this still wasn't as bad as the mentor NIN. To start with, the only ninjutsu I ever saw them use throughout the whole run was Doton. WAR still moving in the middle of a pull to the next group? Doton! Large pull? Doton! 3 mobs left? Doton! Boss? YOU GUESSED IT, DOTON! The WAR had to apply all their Storm's Eye debuffs themselves, and I certainly never once saw Dancing Edge up. I suppose Huton, Mutilate and Shadow Fang are all myths as well. As a final topping on the cesspit cake, they kept putting on and taking off Kiss of the Wasp, and had it off the majority of the time.
I should start demanding payment for my carrying services; I'll need some help for my inevitable back problems.
Why would that be bad or leave worthy? The tank would be missing at most like 4 or 5 vit, because low level accessories offer very little.
e - just checked to make sure. The highest stat available is +4 vit on the MRD/WAR only ring from Brayflox. The highest you can get on any other slot is +3. So yeah....at most, and assumming the lvl 1 accessories had +1 vit, he'd be missing a maximum of 11 vit with the best options available to him, and an irrelevant amount of parry, accuracy or det depending on what he would be using.
Gotta look out for number 1
Eh, you said, "Thunder has no place in a level 60 rotation". You didn't preface it with under certain restrictions, just "no place". Also, I am not really sure that the above mentioned stuff really affects your rotation that much, does it?
That's true enough. I'm just annoyed that I had to do all the DPSing by myself. Not that I can't, we still finished the dungeon in about 15 minutes, but I've seriously seen it completed in 10. The Doton spam, lack of DoTs, and constant flipping of Kiss of the Wasp just felt like an extremely spiteful trolling though. Both the AST and NIN, in fact, managed to get themselves killed at the last boss, presumably so that the WAR and I would have to carry them even more.
On an unrelated note, I can't believe it took me this long to realise that I can just cast Adloquium and Eye for an Eye on my fairy, as SCH, and then deploy it back to myself when I'm trying to solo something.
Yeah. No argument from me, he sounds awful.
If you're using the Duty Finder and not in a full party they pull people within your data centre to fill up the rest of the slots. List of what servers are on what data centre can be found here.
While I won't say the quality of players on Aether is bad, I can see how some people may have some terrible luck with it compared to others. I'm generally pretty thick skinned when it comes to "low skill play" but I was in an ARF yesterday where I was a WHM who was doing... far too much carrying. *Coughs lightly*
Will also admit that, having been on Excalibur for a brief period of time (Primal data centre), the Aether player base feels better than Primal. It's not much leaps and bounds better but it definitely is better. *Shakes fists at stupid LotA, ST, WoD, and WC runs while on Primal*
Because vitality is no longer just a hp fluff stat, but direct damage output as well. 11 in your main stat is pretty significant at that level, and war is already dealing bad damage because of defiance. Ultimately I agree, I would have left in a non hostile way because it's a waste of my time. There's no excuse for wearing lv1 accessories at 34... even the main story gives you gear.
But as I said, 11 would be the maximum difference, and assumming that he had the best accessories available to him (ie dungeon loot). With just level 20-ish white quality accessories that are more readily available to alt jobs (and are also given through the main story), you're looking at a mighty +2 vit per piece, meaning he'd have only been lacking 4 vit.
It's really not something that should make or break anyone at that level. I'm uncertain why you feel it's such a crime.
I've also seen a NIN continuously toggle poison on and off, before. It was baffling. Is there something in the tooltip that would make people want to do this?
I had a friend tell me the mentor crown is just a status symbol and not anything beyond that (and by golly gosh I feel he is right). I usually expect so called "mentors" who use the mentor roulette to not be utter trash, but sometimes that's just asking for too much...
I stun after the tether appears that attaches him to his target. Stun resistance can be a problem, especially if people are using them as part of their rotation. Usually it's up to the tanks, since they'll always have a stun available; not all dps get one. If nothing else, ask the tank, or tell them you'll handle stuns.
I made a personal bingo card for stuff I run into every week and wanted to share

Just got out of Snowcloak with what's possibly the worst run I've ever been in, with a healer who claims that WHM is her main, but plays even worse than newbies. Spamming Cure II with every damage the tank takes, no matter how miniscule, til she runs out of MP. Didn't even use shroud. We wiped at 2nd and 3rd bosses at least twice because she either 1) runs out of mp, 2) stands in mechanics, wiping herself, then the tank. No regen on tank, no medica II. Just c2 c2 c2 all the way until MP runs out. URGH. You may look swanky with your savage gears, but C2 isn't the save-all and definitely standing in mechanics doesn't help either!
Did Sohm Al for the first time earlier.
As soon as we entered the instance, the tank instantly left. Ok then.
We get a second tank a few minutes later. He decided to pull half the room when we weren't ready and we ended up wiping. Second tank leaves.
Then we got a third tank. This tank was great. We cleared the instance with no problems.
I just don't get why people up and leave for no reason.
This is one that I was actually the dumb person.
Queued up mentor roulette on WAR and got A4. Had a PLD as the other tank. Figured I'd have to OT something. The following convo happened:
Me: I don't think I've ever OTed this before...
PLD: It's fine if you want to MT.
Me: ...I don't know how to MT either...
We got through just fine after a quick tutorial. Thanks to that party for putting up with a fail mentor!
Did ARF( its the first lv 60 dungeon), I went as BLm for the first time( just got to lv 60 yesterday) had another blm who was using freaking flare all the time! Like when we fight bosses, she never used any 4 spells just flare, flare , flare. The tank defended her when I said" Fire 4 is better than flare" but tank says" Flare is better than fire iv, uses less mp" <.< like I cant even process that statement
Great selections, but I think you may have forgotten a few things I'd like to suggest:
- Tank trying to "tank" in DPS stance.
- Tanks arguing with each other over who's responsible for tanking what.
- Healers DPSing in Cleric Stance and expecting the other healer to heal everything.
- Healers DPSing while not in Cleric Stance and expecting the other healer to heal everything.
- Healers arguing with each other over who should be healing.
- Tank pulls pack of mobs outside of an AoE LB while it's casting.
- Tank facepulling mobs so AoEs can't hit everything properly.
- Arguments devolving into salty name-calling.
- Change "Duty Finder couple" to "Duty Finder premade", sounds more likely.
- DPS who are 60 ilvls above the tank, yet refuse to cut back and blame the tank for not holding aggro.
- DPS not using basic self-buffs.
- DPS not using DoTs.
- Anyone wearing level 1 glamour gear anywhere because glamours are news to them.
I actually do run into couples a lot who end up making the fight more complicated than it needs to be over something silly. Like I'm 100+ Sophia clears trying to get my bird and I've had multiple run ins with a melee DPS and a Healer with the same last name who insist on stacking together when there's multiple ranged in the party. I inevitably wind up with the tank when this happens, end up getting vuln stacks trying to stack with my partner in time, and dying to her room wide AoE when I could've res'd people(I main SMN and it's mostly all I've ever played) and saved the healers a lot of trouble.
If other people would like to try making their own, I got the template from here. The more the merrier!
Doing 50 roulette as dual DPS with spouse yesterday (must. finish. anima) and get Stone Vigil HM. WHM wearing lvl 50 artifact gear apologizes for being rusty at the job. Tank full pulls to dragonflies and dies when the WHM doesn't follow. I thought at that point it was the tank's fault for over pulling on an out of practice healer. I had no idea our healer was more than just "rusty".
Tank pulls smaller and dies two pulls in because WHM is healing in cleric stance. Tank tells him to turn it off when he heals. "I don't know what cleric stance does." We all try to explain that cleric is for DPSing, "But I don't want to DPS" he says. We tell him to just turn it off and focus on healing.
At first boss he runs himself out of mana casting nothing but Cure II and we wipe. Run back, he does it again but I manage to LB the boss dead before the tank drops. Tank tries to explain to him not to cast Cure II unless it's free or if he needs to catch up on heals. "I don't get what you mean." I try to explain as well as my husband who mains WHM. "Sorry. I don't understand shit."
Next pull, we all die as he chain casts Cure on himself. I tell him he's doing it, "no I'm not". Tank agrees and tells him she got no heals, he was healing himself. "No, I wasn't!"
Husband and I debate kicking him but decide instead to just leave and go bake some cookies. I still don't know if he was really that clueless, drunk, or trolling.
