Pronounciations

So lets talk pronounciation. I'm just going to go over the races, but anything else that needs clarification on pronouncing, please feel free to add.

Hyur - ha-year - pronounced as one syllable
Elezen - EL-eh-zhen
Lalafell- Lah-Lah-Fehll
(now the fun ones)
Miqo'te - Meh-CO-tay
Roegadyn- Row-gah-DINN

Anyway thats how I say them in my head, anyone who has the correct pronouncation feel free to correct me ^_^ Or if you say them different, give me your interpretation.

Wish I would have had a thread like this while playing FFXI, you don't even want to know how I pronounced Konschtat Highlands :rolleyes:

I really dont remember the dictionary spelling style / IPA so here is my crappy English phonetic lol


Hyur - H sound, like in he and here H-your
Elezen - E-lee-zhen
Lalafell - Lawl-ah-fell
Miqo'te - Mi (me)-co-tay
Roegadyn - I know I say this one wrong but thats bcause I forget the spelling all the time lol Row-ged (like jed but with g)-rinn

Galka
Tarutaru

I try to make Hyur sound as foreign as possible because I feel like I'm being insensitive to the mentally challenged if anyone heard me say, "hhh-YERRRR". So I go for [ʰ-YOOR].
Lalafell is pretty straight forward, [LA-la-fehl]
Elezen - [EL-eh-zehn]
Miqo'te - [MEE-koh-teh]
Roegadyn - [RO-guh-deen]/[RO-guh-dinn]

I suppose in hindsight, I tend to throw myself at the first syllable and then let the rest just kinda trail out.

Also, Konschtat for me was [KHAN-shtat]
....Highlands is [HWARGFLOOFPERSCOOPITY-lajoogles]

i just looked up the japanese pronounciation and it seems like the apostrophe from Miqo'te
makes the "o" short and a double tt:

ミコッテ - Mi-Ko-t-te

Lol cant get it exactly how I say it but check google pronunciations (click the speaker) :D

(like for Hyur, she wont make the H sound but rather just say H the letter.. so I put He, but.. no e for me)

Pretty much the same as OP, but for Miqo'te I do as many others seem to and start with a 'me' sound instead of 'meh', the way most languages pronounce their vowels. Usually when I want to be sure, the Japanese katakana version of the name will clue me in to the way it was intended.

Looks like Phe beat me to the Japanese tip while I was typing mine. But yeah, the apostrophe serves as a stop, resulting in that kind of double consonant sound.

As long as we're sharing bad pronunciation stories though, I knew someone that said Jeuno from XI as 'juu-EH-no'.... just... wrong (I always figured it as similar to Juneau, Alaksa). Then again he also though the word chaos is pronounced as 'cha-chos' somehow....

the "oe" in the Roegadyn naming schemes makes the "oo" sound, not "oh". It more or less follows Dutch pronunciations of things (ie. j makes i/y sound).

Roe is closer to row to me then roo - which is more like rue imo (minus microsoft michelle this is why to me).


Glad you told us how to say your name though, I always came up with:

Dij (digital) k strah

or better yet

dik (slilent j) straw.. which gave me a good lol

Haha yeah I know I've gotten my fair share of comments "did you just smash keys on your kb when making that name" etc. But it's a legit Dutch, common last name. the "ij" makes the long "i" or "y" sound in Dutch.

the oe in in Dutch is always heard as "oo" or "uuu" if you prefer to type it that way, but the point stands that it's a long o sound, rather than the "oh" sound everyone is assuming it is, which is not a bad thing since the rule doesn't really exist for us in English. But the katakana for the name is written as "Ru Ga Din", and along with a posting of how the pronunciation exists for the roegadyn lore, it pretty much confirmed that it uses a similar scheme to the Dutch language.

Well good point that its not really made in "my" English. SE has always been worldly with its pronunciations.. all the Limsa pirate names or when in FFXI my first response to bordeaux was "wtf..?!" bored..e..a..u..x..?-

Its all good though because the way I say it (Roegadyn) now is really wrong (because I remembered the wrong spelling for too long lol).

Heh! I got asked once if I was an OB-GYN because of my name.

Lol ya Bordeaux is the actual town in France (been there, its beautiful ><), and Bedeaux, the Quadav camp. Only difference pronunciation-wise is that "r". "Bor-doh" "Be-doh"

I am drawn to these types of names because its always fun to try and break them down and figure out why that name was chosen.

Of curious note is how the English version of this game calls midlanders "Hyur" but the other versions call them "Hyuran". Someone suggested this was because of our tendency in English to associate -an as an adjective, so it was shortened to "hyur". I still think "Hyuran" sounds better, but then again I'm not monolingual so I can see beyond the -an thing :< lol

Elezen = Elle - zen
Lalafell = La - la -fell
Roegadyn = Row - ga - din

I think its probably a good choice to go Hyur - there is a structure to English (though my wife tells me it is not obvious lol). I'd agree it sounds like an adjective.

Yeah that's why I'm not too confused over the change anymore. It's something that to me, as a bilingual speaker, didn't really stand out. But it actually makes some sense when reviewing the structure and patterns of English.

I think this is a rather ambiguous case that could swing either way.

I'll provide the example of describing someone who lives in Asia as an 'asian'. In every strictest sense it probably is unequivocally considered an adjective that modifies the implied word 'person', but so often the 'person' is dropped and 'asian' sort of takes on the role of full blown noun it may as well be considered one.

An Asian is just one race of the same being, though. "Hyur" is meant to be "humans" in the fantasy world. "Midlander" and "Highlander" would be the "Asians" of this world.

Elezen - BU
Lalafell- RI
Miqo'te - GA
Roegadyn- ....

In this case then you would need Hyur as a word. There is a lot of crossing and growth in the language but the often invisible structure helps lend ideas to the words that I dont think should be ignored..


Since Hyurans wouldn't be from Hyur its not exactly the same.

That's true, but I was just looking for a quick example word that would use the same suffix type, not really considering where it fits in the breakdown of race vs. nationality.

'Human' can also be used as both a noun and adjective (granted it doesn't get modified in any way to do so), which is more the point I'm trying to make. I'm not an English/language major by any means, but to me it could swing both ways, depending on if a noun is implied or not.

So in real life we are human. There is no adjective form for human. "That structure over there is human-an" doesn't sound right. Human is the species just like how Hyur = species, and the midlanders and highlanders are races of that species. Humans have a bunch of races.

That would also mean, that species can't mate with each other. Hyur's can't have babies with lalafells for example, but highlanders CAN have babies with midlanders.

Yeah thats what I said, Hyur isnt a place so Hyuran doesn't really flow imo. We are humans (a species that includes races), but we dont have words for races that doesnt have to also do with location. Asians are from asia, Asian Americans .. bla bla.

Hyur is a race, not a species (and has no special location input, like Hyuran from Hyur(land) lol).
edit: actually its a species but we call it a race in game.. lol :D so further confusion if you used race naming of a species more convoluted =wewt edit=

Point being using the -an would be convoluted compared to not using it (imo :P).

"This development will change the Miqo'te race" = "This development will change the Seekers of the Sun and Keepers of the Moon." It should be "This development will change the Miqo'te Species".

Human Race should be human species, because there are multiple races within human (or you could say human races, but human itself isnt a race - just that there are many races within human group). So I dont think it hindered it at all. Saying human race, while race is a subgroup of humankind its a really weird and non-technical usage though I guess some use it (I've always said human species).

Just so you know I edited my other post, was confusing myself.

Hyur - species, then race. However calling Hyur a race (because thats what they are called in game) will mean that saying he is a Hyuran race, which refers to the Asia, Asian issue I brought up. But the fact of the matter is its a species, and we are all screwed up lol. So dont call it a Hyuran because when we incorrectly call it a race with the race type naming style (-an) it will refer to a location (Asian/Asia). (or just change "pick your race" to pick your "species")

Unless SE is trying to say that there is a parent species to all the races - which would be willd... also means we could interbreed :D though it still means dont use the -an because in normal structure -an would lead to a non -an form for location.

Tecnically speaking, the little tsu ( ッ ) doesn't exactly mean doubling the next sound. It's more like of a quick stop, a brief moment where you don't speak, just block your mouth and breath altogether. The double sound is the consequence of the air from your lungs pressing to get out.
You can find the ッ even at the end of words, often in comics, and it means that a character has suddenly stopped talking.

So yes, in this case, the ッ is pretty much there because of the pause between miqo and te, due to the apostrophe. Same effect, slightly different explanation.
