Lv.44 Cutscene question,Cids Googles [Spoiler]

so im watching this awesome cutscene and i get to the echo part, where i give Cid the googles, now.. when did i aquire Cids googles? is it a me from the future using the echo to give him the googles? if so why do i nod when he asks me if is me? i never did this in the past how am i so sure and have no doubt about it.

im going for a me from the future and im taking part of an echo-ception.. where i see an echo within an echo lol.

so if this is the answer i hope SE does a side quest line futher along where i go about making cids googles and give them to him :D

You do know 1.0 players who bought the standard edition of the game started the game with his goggles in their inventory? ;)

Seriously though, I have no idea, but it definitely would not be through the Echo, as that's not actually how it works (

the Echo isn't time travel at all, but just viewing a person's memories as if you'd actually experienced it yourself - it's effectively a form of mind-reading).

Actually the "Garland Goggles" are just a pre-order item from 1.0. (Basically the Mog Hat for 1.0, even has the experience effect)

Back on topic, I was also confused by this, as you said, it gave the impression that I was somehow going back in time and giving him his goggles, which "I" never remembered doing. It was explained to me by someone else that by using "echo" you were interacting with him through his memories, and the goggles were just sort of you leaving him a bread crumb trail to recover his memory.

@Enkidoh: Lest we forget the flower from Ul'dah, the balloonfish from Limsa Lominsa, and the treent vine from Gridania in the 1.0 story lines... we did get those in a echo hop. There was also the pistol from the Coral Tower that we lost inside an Echo hop. The Echo seems to be different from what it was in 1.0, but that's just because we've not gotten an interactive hop yet. Minfilia did give what seems to be the exact same speech about the echo that she did in the Path of the Twelve when we first joined them.
But then again all of the above is from the 1.0 main scenario and I'm not really sure how much of that was retcon'd

It could be the echo... if the echo is unchanged from 1.0 it gives the narrowest of narrow possibilities...
and the looks of what happened with Cid's Goggles doesn't look similar to an echo hop...

I'm only going by my memory here, maybe the Loremongers can give a more definitive answer

We are TOLD that history is like a slate that cannot be rewritten. And we are TOLD this by the most knowledgeable mortal on the subject in Eorzea.

BUT mortals can be wrong about the nature of the universe, as was Aristotle following an era where his perspective was considered irrefutable.
You also have an unusually strong strain of the Echo. And being the main character, you are wont to... bend the perceived laws. To quote Lightning, "We make the impossible possible" in true FF-fashion. If anyone is going to break the rules, it'll be you.

I still think that's a blatant contradiction though - that we are not literally visiting the past, but just viewing someone's memories but apparently bringing items back to and from it with us. The items from the future evidently brought back with us and apparently lost in the 'past' could also be explained away as not having actually come from the future in the first place.

After all, using Gridania's 1.0 story as an example - you got the treant vine in the Echo when Yda and Papalymo first meet after fighting the wolves. You then showed it over to Miounne, after a noticeable 'gap' occurs in the dialogue - as if the player quickly jumped from the present into the Echo. You then handed it over to the Guildmistress of the Leatherworker's Guild where you see Khrimm for the first time, evidently, again in the Echo. All the times it was shown, have in hindsight been in past Echoes, not the present.

Of course the player actually didn't realize this at the time, because of how the game showed the Echo as being virtually indistinguishable from the present (only after joining the Path of the Twelve were Echo visions preceded by a trippy 'warping in' effect). At least in ARR there is no doubt when the player is experiencing the Echo, with it's grainy, washed out VHS video footage appearence.

But the important thing here is, the item never even existed in the present at all - it was found in an Echo, was only handled in the Echo, and was lost in the Echo. Sure, you could open your inventory and it was listed there, but from a story perspective in hindsight, you never had it in the first place (it shows just was a massive mind screw Tanaka's original narrative for 1.0 really was shaping up to be ;)).

I'm not saying Cid's goggles in ARR are an example of the same thing, but it does make you think. ;)

The entire goggle scene just confused me tbh.

i know that from 1.0 you can interact with the echo, but its very rare, there was one mission where while in the echo you are address and spoken to, and then explained that it could happen. is the shiny us, the manifestation of us in the echo we are having in the present(cutscene moment) if so, when did we get the googles? is it broken lore?? if not then is us from the future having another echo with cid, where we do have the googles in the inventory and we travel back to give him his googles, knowing , from the current echo that we HAD to go back and give them thoes googles to start the chain of events that make cid become who he is in the past AND also remember who he was in the present.

we are just missing the future part of the lore i guess, cause i hope it wasent a writers mistake

Actually, it was the present-day Miounne who suggests you take your vine to the guild. She says this in the context of the having been no reports of treant attacks recently, doubting your story.

Likewise in Ul'dah, you show your blossom to the receptionist who insists on fetching one of the masters - it is only after she walks away that the echo triggers.

And in Limsa, the present-day head chef of the Bismark remarks at smelling a balloonfish on your person from malms away. Once shown the produce, he comments that it usually takes some sort of big storm to drag it up from the decks, the likes of which they haven't seen in years. THEN the echo triggers.

So no, that stuff got dragged to the present day. You got up to some funky rule-breaking stuff there. ;)

Indeed, I suspect we'll be coming full circle on this one.

If history is a slate that cannot be re-written, we may need to fulfill our own timeline to avoid a paradox. (Noel Kreiss would be proud.)

Another example of bringing items from the echo was the lvl 30 alchemy quest I believe it was in 1.0 you had to go into the sick almost comatosed kid's echo and get a potion or something from him to save him and wake him up. You go out of the echo and give it to him and he wakes.

Since I do t have any additional story to back other theories right now I have to go with the inception theory that he used the echo to bring the memories out and for whatever reason he had to alter that part of his memory to do so. But this might play into the fact that NO ONE CAN REMEMBER THE HEROS OF LIGHT just what they did.

I saw this scene as partly metaphorical, and partly your character playing around a little.

From what i understand, the Echo is purely used to see into the past, but you CAN interact with people in the memory, but it doesnt affect any outcomes. You didn't -actually- give Cid his goggles. You merely alerted Cid to your ability to see into his memories, and giving him the goggles was symbolic of showing that you were the one who managed to help him regain his memories in the church in camp drybone.

It's certainly not literally that your character travelled in time and gave him goggles. And Cid's "it was you.." was more him understanding that you have the power of the Echo and were just then able to see his past.

actually as a legacy player he does remember me in the cutscene since i rode the enterprise before with him into an epic battle so hes like heeeey. i have done this before.. and you where there too! then goes on telling you there is no need to spread the word that the warriors of light are back since it could alert enemies

the problem with this theory is that he starts remembering how long has he WORE thoes googles.. and remembers getting them from you, there were no material googles until your shiny self gave it to them in the past, from all the time he is remembering there are no googles until you show up.

Then that's pulls up the question of where did you get those goggles. Problem is you didn't get them from him before you go into the echo because he puts them back on afterwards... I really think its more a symbolism at this point in time than anything. You didn't magically conjur a pair up and he didn't give you his when you went to the past in the echo also he does have that third eye thing so the memory of "handing" him the goggles as someone else I think pointed out could be you metaphorically offering him a "helping hand" with his memories.

there is a possibility that a you from the future aquired thoes googles somhow then used the echo,gave him thoes googles and in the present since cid is remembering next to you how he got thoes googles you withness a memory on CId wher an echo of you in the future gives cid of the past the googles he is remembering in the present.....

That's the thing though I doubt a future self is doing a double echo when he looks at you you're being pulled into the echo and the only time I've seen an echo within an echo is from 1.0 and you get pulled into acillia's memories when that elezen guy was killed and its up backlashing and knocking both you and thancred onto your butts and that one wasn't even realy envolving you. It is a possibility but even you nod and smile at cid when he said that light was you

I just rewatched the cutscene today, I definately heard a second echo 'whoosh' at the time the player appears in form to give Cid his goggles... So it is a possibility... but Rannie has a point the only double echos in 1.0 were going into the memory of someone while you were in a memory. Damned echo is always contridicting it's own logic.

It could have been Hydaelyn giving Cid the Goggles - I mean, the power of the Echo is technically her domain. She bestowed it on us for a reason - if it was truly as significant as claimed, everyone in Eorzea (by which I mean the NPCs, not us players) would have it. But they don't, and the story assumes that only the person playing is the bearer of the Echo (it assumes everyone else in your party has a kind of "standing to the side" role, and are thus not important).

There in you are wrong there are more people who have the echo and there is an npc that you speak to at about lvl 20 that's Minfillia and she has the echo and there were others in 1.0 from the Waking Sands that were blessed (or cursed) with the echo. Also when you get your first Crystal you see others in the vision from Hydaelyn they all share the echo same as you.

Also I forgot to add this in....

Again when you get out of the echo Cid looks directly at you and says "That light it was you. You don't know this but all pure blooded Garleans posses the third eye maybe that is what helped me recognize that it was you" (can't remember if that's exactly what he said but pretty damn close. I'm suprised I don't have it memorized by now with how many times I watch those cutscenes from my inn before I log out)
