eventual DirectX 10 / 11 patch, possible increase in performance?

So has Square ever stated they would ever add in these graphic renders? In hopes, this will add better performance to higher end cards.

I'm only bringing this up as WoW, today has officially added Directx 11 to their game. I've actually received a ~20FPS boost from it and thought, maybe this will also help players achieve higher FPS with FF14.

Right now the game is DX9. DX11 wouldn't be to hard to install the textures already in XIV support it so we might not see much difference in graphics but we would see an increase in performance because the DX11 cards would have the extra processes it can grab from.

Yeah it's pretty obvious it's a DX9 game since the dept of field and ambient occlusion features are cpu based,well from I see. If the game have DX11 both of these features are built in the API and would require less resources, well from the CPU at least. Might even look better.

DirectX 11 support would be nice. They might be considering implementing it with the graphical streamlining operations they're doing.

Hmmm upon further thought, I'm pretty sure majority of the developer programming team is primary focused on the PS3 version. Maybe we'll see something when they have a "stable" build for the PS3?

I would very much like to see DX11 support added. Maybe they can even do something like a high quality texture pack, and unlock higher quality graphical features for DX11 similar to what Dragon Age 2 offers. Just a thought.

If I'm not mistaken DX11 support would kill the crashing on alt+tab as well would it not?

I have been wishing this since the start.

Word on the street is Fullscreen alt tab crashing is supposed to happen, because SquareEnix thinks it adds immersion to the game.

Little do they know nobody likes it.

Hopefully, I suffer like 20 fps framerate drop when I turn on depth of field and ambient occlusion. I would like to play with those and I would be able to on any other game.

SE said in a interview that they would add DX10 and DX11 later on in the game life but right now they think DX9 is ok for the game. Don't know what yoshi-p would say about it tho seeing how this interview was when tanaka was the leader of the game.

I would not mind DX10 at least around ps3 release for PC :)

hardware accelerated ambient occlusion was brought built-in DX10's API
hardware accelerated advanced dept of field was brought in DX11's API

Hopefully this will get added with the rest of the optimisations they are working on.

Tanaka said in an interview that he had in mind/wished to upgrade the engine to work with dx10~11 at some point while he was still in charge, but now that he is now only god knows if it will happen. And seriously right now there are more important matters to deal with than tweaking the engine to run on dx10~11 with all the glitches it can add to the already omgtoomanyglitches.
But, yes, once the PS3 release is out and most of the biggest problems are fixed, it would be nice to be able benefit of the new dx wonders.

Hate to break it to you...but Ambient Occlusion will NEVER be a realistic option for quite some time, it's a massive resource hog in any game that has it as an option. Turning it on is asking for even the most dedicated rigs to chug away.

DX11 is better for multi core processing, it was built around it. as for dx10 i dont think we need to add it nmo it was never that great at least not performance wise compared to dx 9 and dx 11

I also think this is a very good idea... Though I still think a less demanding client download for those with lower end graphical options using our service-active accounts would be nice as well, and would make the game more accessible for many many more people... But this is definitely a great place to start!

DX11 features are really about making the game look better and most important, to better use GPU and scale up with GPU power.

Then there is stuff like ambient occlusion that is so poorly implemented and unoptimized that you can't really blame it on DX9.

So really, DX10 or DX11 won't bring any significant boost on current hardware. What they need to do is optimize the engine, once they've got that they can start thinking on using DX11 for eye-candy and future proofing.

Really hope so. Technically speaking, the game in this state, seems too 'limited' respect of what could be with its nice visuals.

It most likely wont be the XIV development team who do this, so saying "theres more important things right now" is useless as those would still get done. Also a an environment artist wouldnt exactly be given the job of upgrading the engine.

The developers of the engine would be tasked to do this (and so it'd be done for all SE games).

I think it will happen sooner or later once they've got it stable.

I really hope they are already thinking about it.

This is the company that took like 5 years to put in windowed mode for ff11, i can't see them doing anything until it is too late.

Interesting WoW has joined Aion in the upgraded engine train would be nice if FF14 hopped on too...

They didn't put it in FF11 for RTM reasons and to avoid forbidden external programms.

There doesn't have to be any real graphic improvements to use DX11. DX11 can use hardware accelerated advanced dept of field and ambient occlusion and not the slow power hungry software/cpu based implementation that is used now. There are more things to DX11 besides graphic features but also multi threading optimization.

This would be a good idea, the only problem I can see would be windows xp compatibiliy because it directX 11 was designed for vista and 7, it could be comatible with xp sp3, but im not 100% if it is then they really should do migrate to 11.

In FFXI people with newer graphics cards are seeing lag problems because their cards dont support directX 8.1, and unless they do keep using directX 9 this problem will happen very fast, and it will be alot better for SE to implement a directX 11 upgrade asap. rather than wait.

One of the major additions of DX11 is tessellation and the engine has to be written specifically for this, it would require a lot of work on SE's part, all existing models would need to be redone to allow for proper tessellation also.

Somehow I don't see SE investing the time to do this, at least until an expansion is on the cards and the game is more successful.

They would basically be adding another layer to their Q&A as well, making sure that the game runs on all versions of windows as well as all versions of Direct X. (or yea and PS3)

I think the models are already made for tesselation purposes, but then scaled down.

Well I'm not entirely sure, normal maps are textures.

Tessellation is dividing polygons to produce a more complex model, rounding of edges and adding additional features with height maps.

It's not quite as simple as flicking the DX11 switch as people seem to think.

Actually tessellation would require lower quality models + displacement maps so the GPU can construct more complex models from them (or less complex) as needed.

And to the guy that mentioned hardware based occlusion, as I said before, all that won't be increasing performance by that much on today's (what most people have) hardware.

As a sideline, ambient occlusion is an expensive technique but not even close to how it is in this game, so the differences in performance between a properly optimized AC implementation and DX11 AC implementation wouldn't be that big in performance, but in visual quality.

So again, yes please give us DX11, because in 2 years this engine will be outdated and outclassed without it.

So it only makes sense that they should consider this in a years (or two's) time, I don't believe Tera and GW2 are DX11.

Also Jinko, I confirmed with a for real Arenanet person that GW2 is in fact DX9.

Granted, I spoke to this guy at PAX last year, so this info may be outdated.

PS3 wont be a problem they leaving PS3 with 720p and updating the look for PC they said this before in a interview. So if you want the game to look better then 720p then get a pc if not you still have a pretty good looking game on ps3.
