NA/EU are not close each other!!!!

Hello,
I just got mail with server location info and Im truly dissapointed because it seems that Square Enix think that NA and EU are in neighbor. Thats not true!
Pings are really important and difference between NA and EU is like 200-400ms. Same as from EU to JP or NA to JP is ~400ms.
Timezone is same difference from EU to NA and JP but -7h to first one and +7h to second one.
So what's the deal?
Language only? Wow, seems smart...

I demand you to tell me exactly which servers will be REALLY LOCATED in Europe with GMT 0/+1 timezone. Not just from the name.

As far as I've heard, they've only opened 1 new data center based on demand, which houses all the NA/EU servers. And I hear it's located in Montreal.

Indeed there are only 2 datacenters. None of the are actually located in the EU. Yoshi-p made a lengthy post about it.

it Doesn't mean there is never going to be one, but for now we have a JP and a NA one.

As you pointed out, EU to NA is 200~400, whereas EU to JP is higher. The NA ones are designated as EU also because the ping is better for Europe to NA than Europe to Japan. If this isn't the case for you, you are free to choose a JP server. (Also NA to JP is not 400ms.)

NA/EU are much closer than the OP claims.

By opening a data center in NA, SE cut EU players' ping times by more than half. To NA they currently average 109ms (Paris, Frankfurt). High=138 (Athens), low=75 (Manchester). To Japan, the average is 281ms. High=317, low=244.

Yoshi-P's message says that setting up this first remote data center is expected to increase the community, and that "it may be eventually possible to establish more data centers."

I get a decent ping to Montreal from the UK, roughly ~100ms (I'm not on the best of lines in my area) with no packet loss or jitter. My experiences in the beta have been smooth (outside of a couple of connection losts) and I haven't seen any noticeable effect from latency or anything. If you do feel such issues, it might be in other areas and not just the network.

I would expect SE to open more localized centres when they can see that the game is going to be worth that additional investment. Opening one new data centre requires a lot of work, as these servers will still need to be maintained physically. Once the game generates some solid income, we will hear some news on this.

That completely depends on where the datacenter is located. If its located at the West Coast region, then yes. If its located at the East coast, then no. Then again, it's not just the straight line distance that counts. What you need to know is the amount of network "hops" it takes from your location to the designated datacenter in either the NA or JP (including the amount of packet losses along the way) in order to determine your ping.

If you're closer to JP, but you have a lot of packet loss, then it might still be wise to select a NA datacenter. However, it it goes the other way around as well. There is a reason why Yoshi-p suggested that you create a character on a server located in each datacenter in order to determine which one suits you best.

In general, most EU countries have a better connection to NA Datacenters then they have with JP Datacenters.

Phisical DIstance not always best ping....

I'm from the UK and to the US I get 120ms (Lotro) to 140ms (Rift). ping to www.square-enix.com is 264ms. Also I applied to transfer from Ragnarok to Masamune as going with Distant World LS.

(Sorry long post)

They've already said all the Data-Centers are in the USA. None of them are located in Europe, they've simply added in the 'EU' tag to encourage EU players to play in a data-center that would (again provide a slightly better ping as well as a common language).

As far as i'm aware, peoples main concerns lay in the fact that ping was affecting gameplay in 1.0, such as fights like Ifrit where timing was key.

This problem was almost entirely created not by the location of the servers but because of the server architecture which I can say with all certainty was coded horrificly.

After fighting Ifrit, Crowded Fates, Dungeons, Instanced Fights, Guildhests etc., during the beta I've noticed that the ping issues we had in 1.0 are gone. With the new layout of how content is spread among servers with smaller areas and more instanced content the issues we had with servers reaching their physical capacity extremely quickly are now gone.

I currently live in Northern Ireland, where I have to hop through a number of Data-Centers From; Antrim > Belfast > Edinburgh (Scotland) > Cornwall (England) > USA (From here I don't know)
Which has improved drastically since British Telecoms [BT] set up the Fiber-Optics Network.

My ping sits in and around 80-150ms. This is well within an acceptable range. So the issue of location isn't really a big concern. I personally wouldn't want them to throw a specific UK data-center just for the sake of 20-30ms. If I do a 'tracert' on any server in America (Any Decent Quality Server) for games such as XIV, WoW and other American Services I use daily, they VERY rarely go above 150ms and any ping increases are usually through a fault of my own.

I can't speak for the likes of France and Germany, but after playing with some players from around Europe during the beta (And yes some of them were in the Ifrit fight) none of them had issues dodging cracks in the ground, healing or tanking. We had no connection issues either during the BETA, is truly was flawless.

tl;dr
Server Location wasn't the issue, it was the horrible server architecture.
The fact we even have data centers outside Japan is really nice now.
There was no lag during the Beta for anyone I met in the EU even during Ifrit.
Also, does it really matter that much?

did you bother trying to ping the NA datacenter? Your should be pinging in the 100s to it. It has nothing to do with timezones and everything to do with infrastructure.

it was a combination of both. And even if the new data center isn't right on your doorstep it's still closer to you and will still offer you better perfromance.

That might be a bit off topic, but i have a noob question...but how can i compare/look up the ping between JP and NA data center?
I have the bad feeling, that we still have server lag...running out of the aoe circles and getting hit anyway, feels like an Ifrit fight dejavu...
Pretty much i am pissed about that...

That server isn't located in a game data center. Even worse, it is a sort of umbrella name that resolved to different servers based on how you access it (web vs ping) and what part of the world you are in. To estimate ping times, see below.

The AOE circle thing may or may not be related to network latency (ping times). From what little I've read, it could just be something SE needs to adjust during beta.

As for checking ping times to SE data centers, people have been using the following hosts to estimate network latency:

jp.square-enix.com or 202.67.53.202 (for "JP" region)
square-enix-montreal.com or 184.107.107.176 (for "NA/EU" region)

The distance from here to Montreal is about half the distance from Montreal to parts of Europe (I used Paris for my distance calculations). As such my observations may not apply to Europe. I noticed that if I ran when I saw the circle appear and stopped a little beyond the circle whether I got hit or not was pretty random. If I ran when I saw the circle and ran a ways beyond the circle, I wouldn't get hit most of the time. If I ran when the enemy's casting bar appeared, I would never get hit even if I stopped just a little out of range. Being healer in Ifrit (so I didn't see his casting bar) as long as I ran right after the ground effects showed up I didn't get hit at all. The only 1.0 Ifrit fight that I did was the low level one where Ifrit was defeated by the people that skipped the scene before I was even done the scene (I never got around to doing the hard primal fights for some reason), so my experience is as a noob to Ifrit who has only read about what you had to do.

Ok thanks for the IPs, but how do i measure the ping now?
And i really hope that the AoE thing, is not server related, and that they get it fixed soon.

Well me and my freinds used to clear the chat log beside the Ifrit actions. Once you saw "Ifrit casts Erruption" you pretty had start to run, if you ran away once you saw the effect, it was too late. Ifrit was not fun at all, cuz you pretty was limited to staring at the chat log...One of the reasons why many ppl i know never attemt the relics, because Ifrit Extrem was impossible to beat under such conditions

You can open a command window and type "ping " then the host name or IP address. (better instructions: EN, DE). After ~5 pings it will display a summary. The number after "average" is what you're looking for.

Note that ping values can vary depending on problems elsewhere on the Internet, so what you see could change from hour to hour, day to day, etc.
