So is beta coming before benchmark now? God I hope so, I'm not sure how much more I can take. At this point this is me after I do a quick check of the forums and NA blog every night:

I just hope we get either one fairly soon. Like, within the next couple days. Been having XIV withdrawal real bad lately.
Iknoright?! Me and my friends have been talking about our withdrawals too, maybe we need help? :p
They might just pump the benchmark link out a day or so before beta client is downloadable. Kind of don't see the reason for a benchmark if this is the case though. Unless they are effectively getting the beta testers to "test" the benchmark which will then be modified / finalized for the release - moreso then using it as a tool to see if people can run beta on their systems?
If we do see it, my votes are on the written letter in a day or 2.
Toksik i miss u buddy!
You guys should try waiting for Starbound
Yeah, I believe BETA would have to be first in line and over with to then release a Benchmark. My PC should be able to smoke it. (mmm) =P
Did I hear a FFXIV support group forming? Count me in! ._.
lol count me in.
I really don't see why benchmark isn't out yet though...Wasn't it finished a while ago? it should have been :)
they might release benchmark during phase1 ... legacy have phase1 while the other have benchmark
the benchmark is coming WITH beta ^^
that was over a week ago?
That doesn't make sense; then Legacy people won't know if they can run the game smoothly until it actually starts, then benchmark wont even be necessary to begin with.
Ofc Legacy people played in 1.0, so if you could play it well there, you can play it well now too...probably; but regardless, bench should be out already :)
Hnnng...! Working as an illustrator in an office, and sitting in front of the monitor all day... I keep checking Lodestone for info every 20 min or so. T_T Sad? Perhaps. Worth it the moment beta-info pops up? Definetly.
ah come on.. the benchmark is not really for people who wonder if ARR is going to run smoothly on their pc.. its more for fun.. and publicity for people who arent participating in beta.
and nothin more..
the new engine is better for lower running systems.. thats why they introduced the new graphics engine.. and for ps3. so when you could run 1.0. you easily can run 2.0. also the same way.
I imagine the benchmark to be released with the beta codes. So that people can see their rating while they wait for the servers go online. I think they will give us the beta codes 2 or 3 days before they start the beta. Everyone just remember that phase 1 and 2 aren't 24 hour long test. I think it will at most be 5-8 hours each day.
2 benchmarks were planned and one was due to release shortly before beta and another one which allowed you to create a character later on.
Honestly, benchmark should have been a teaser for beta, not the other way around.
A large part of this community is already going to be in beta and the benchmark will just be
"meh, we already saw the graphics and know how it runs now"
So the benchmark will only be for people not selected for beta. Which is ok, but it would have been better as a teaser for everyone. Instead of just the people not selected for beta.
THe benchmark will probably be released closer to the final build after tuning is done. They will probably have options for different settings as well.
Well if Bench uses max settings or something, that'd be cool, otherwise alpha videos should be enough as *teaser* But that depends on what the Bench shows also i guess :p Hope it shows fight with Behemoth or something.
Kind of agree and kind of don't. From a technical stand point, any time you change tech specs of a program (especially if it's lower than the previous version), you always want to put out a benchmark as a small program for people to see what machines will run fine without the install time (which does take a long time).
On, the other hand, as you said, the benchmark can be used as a valuable teaser and would have been better for everyone and not just those selected. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt though and say that they probably can't release an accurate benchmark until they accurately know how the current game plays. I have no evidence to back this up, it's just me giving them the benefit of the doubt.
Isn't that the purpose of delivering us 2 benchmarks?
One now, teaser, general specs example, graphics showcase, for those not in beta,
One later, finely tuned, closely matching the game requirements for actual benchmarking purposes.
benchmark could be release with this letter coming up tonight with the beta email. Beta may not start to next week but at least we got our invite and benchmark :) here for hoping :)
As with any game (benchmark in this case) every time you play/watch it as a developer you kinda go;
"Oh, sugar honey ice tea! I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT TEXTURE WAS MISSING"
"Is that animation meant to do that?"
"Why are we getting a FPS drop at X point?"
"Oh it crashed..."
These questions and more crop up constantly, they then need to be noted, rectified and tested.
This takes a LONG TIME.
As developers we can say "We'll have it out next week" and then 2 hours later find a truck load of problems with it and quickly patch them up delaying the initial release.
Trust me your patience will pay off, you'll recieve a fully functioning product that meets the standards you expect
TL;DR
These things take time, be patient.
Yes, you can. And in this case, they should. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be angry if the game kicked off early with some textures missing or seams showing, but believe me - after the horrible kickoff in 2010, the undeniably bad reception FFXIV got in the medias, SE will work hard to prevent that from happening a second time.
The whole point of creating ARR is to revive a game that got one of the worst reviews in a long time, even if many players did enjoy it (including myself bigtime). In a field with much competition, 'many players' isn't even close to enough. Fail once, you get a second chance. Fail twice... You'll be stuck with those 'many players'.
I've left my share of 'I WANT TO PLAY NOOOW'-posts in the forum already, and I plan on leaving more. But I also realize that they will take the time they need, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
I was simply referring to the benchmark :)
But there will undoubtedly be bugs etc in Beta version, all phases. If they wanted to get rid of them BEFORE beta start, it would never start. It's unavoidable; but as long as they get rid of blatantly obvious issues, it's fine. But postponing bench/beta/launch for a little texture issue...on a hand of some NPC...don't think so :)
Oh sorry, my bad. I guess my mind was too much on the game itself, so I misunderstood you a little. :)
EDIT: I think maybe that makes me a hypocrite, lol.
I like your sig Tox! :D
