Zone Lock Petition.

Now I have not played A Realm Reborn yet as a tester and even if I did that is disclosed. I was randomly thinking what if we get locked out of the zone because of to many players/mobs loaded.

Then what do we do to cross over to the next area ? Anima might not be an option ? What if the zone doesn't have another entrance ? If this has already been thought over or implemented in a way that a player won't get locked out of a zone to cross over then you can ignore this thread.

Okay, so if this hasn't been thought over I've thought of a solution pretty simple also.

When a player trys to move into a zone that is full give them a prompt screen that pops up asking " Would you like to move to [ Area exit names that are available] [Yes] or [No] ?

Pretty simple so yea. So If you think it's a good Idea please by all means hit the like button. :D

If the given zone is full then we'll simply get put in an overflow server, much like Guild Wars 2 does.

First, we can tell you haven't played ARR since the alpha is not available to us yet for another four days. Second, I'm sure there's a solution in the works in case this stuff happens.

How can you be so sure ? As from what I've read the only time instances will be formed are for event/raid/dungeons.
The 2 hour Live video showed as they were locked out but because the zone was purposely closed. Still it led to him being locked out and there probably isn't a method to get around to the next zone. Was mostly a suggestion if they have not thought of it.

I myself don't see it being much of a issue with dungeon finder people can go to any zone and sit there wont be need for /sh and with a better buy/sell/bid system for the ward i don't see people /sh to sell or get people for event.

Also i don't see FFXIV having that many players on a giving time to be honest maybe the world only that noob can enter and once everyone quit and go to the next big MMO release or wow get a update which only take 2-3month then they all leave. Seeing how we also going to have JP,EU,NA servers and most endgame ls would be going to there server close to them that = less players per world.

Your entire premise is based upon the assumption that every zone will only support a finite number of concurrent users and will be hard coded to lock players out once that number is reached. An assumption that has no actual material support outside of your assumption, making the whole discussion irrelevant. We might as well be talking about what tactic and strategies we should be using in 2.0 for the Martian Pony Invasion raid.

Aside from a new expansion and everyone going to the same zone at the same time, I think were pretty safe on this. Heck in FFXI their servers supported 800 or so people in the same zone, I think we'll be fine.

It's not an assumption as everything in the world has a limit so point proven. What if there is a popular area and masses of people are there hunting/grinding on all servers then what ? okay bye.

Actually, Yoshi-P has discussed that very issue. There's a translation/summary of info in a thread around here (I'd need to find it), but he specifically says they're considering two options for the possibility of a zone reaching maximum capacity (which seems to be 1000 people). One option is a lock-out, the other is to have a new instance of the zone created for people to go into instead.

As he doesn't anticipate having 1000 people in the same zone as a "normal" thing, they're not sure which would be the best way to go about it and are mulling it over.

So, the OP is bringing up a valid topic. It's a big "what if", but it's something that they still need to account for because it could happen.

They even stated they would expect the maximum characters in a zone limit would be an extremely rare occurance to hit. Why do you feel the need to petition against something that hasnt been decided and isn't likely to even be an issue?

Sigh, there is a limit to how much traffic a server node can handle, that's not the issue here. Your assumption is that the response will be a preset hard limit to the number of users, which is only one of the many different ways that are used to address these issues (and one of the least utilized).

Other (better) ways to address this includes moving players into an overflow server(node) like in GW2, or like Eve Online where server loads are balanced and extra nodes are used to reinforce areas that are under heavy traffic.

Uh, no. While I agree that you should understand the system first, don't wait until the game is already finished.

The whole point of the beta process is to get the game's problems fixed BEFORE it gets released. FFXIV already wrecked its first chance, so it's already on borrowed time to prove itself and get it right the second time.

So voice your complaints in alpha/beta. Don't wait until the game is released to the public and its already too late.

I wasn't specifically addressing the OP in that post, I was making a general point.

Why are you trying to find solutions for imaginary issues? 1.0 servers were fail and yet no one ever couldn't enter Uldah because it was full. If this problem didn't exist in 1.0, it certainly wont exist in 2.0.

1000 is a lot of people I don't think I saw that many people in one area in seasonal events before and even then thats why they try to do them in different zones I guess... to cut down on over saturating one area o.O ... that night on castrum nova patch night... -still has nightmares-

there are already looking into two solutiion, here i hope it will be the 2nd option. Which is like GW2's overflow server

They're seriously considering both approaches, as in - carefully weighing the pros and cons of each system against the cost/difficulty of its implementation compared with the likelihood/frequency of such a thing ever being necessary. As Yoshi's said, it's doubtful that 1000 people in a single zone all fighting or whatever would ever happen "naturally" (as in, without some deliberate planning by players, or a poorly thought out event by the designers/developers).

So, when they say "seriously considering", they mean "looking at all the factors and weighing them heavily against each other". They don't mean "seriously think we're going to go that route". I'd be inclined to think they're leaning more toward an instancing solution - but again, the cost, time and such of implementing such a system could be quite expensive and (and I'm only putting this forth as a possibility, not an inevitability) could set things back farther in order to properly implement and test it. So, it's not a decision to be made lightly.

Solution 1: The zone get reseted, everyone can enter it again ^^

I think it would only be a problem the first 4 days, when all new players flood the first camp area. But XIV has 3 first camp areas, so it shouldn't be a big problem after all. Until all players choose the same starter class.
I'm sure SE have enough content in many different zones to spread the growd.

People are forgetting that this 1000 figure also includes mobs and probably NPCs, which could easily be in the hundreds per zone. Still, it's enough to not fill any zone except on special occasions or the release of new expansions. However it would be sloppy coding to not have anything in place to deal with these scenarios.

creating instances would suck ass.
it'd be a hassle to find your friends, and if the results of the event do something to the enviroment (similar to the beastmen attacking aht urghan) it'd be impossible to design around (in the scenario one instance wins and the other loses).

personally I'm fine with an area saying you cant enter atm in the off chance it has over 1k people. they did something similar in xi.

I think putting a lock-out on the zone is a terrible idea. Imagine if they try to do a zone event like the last day of the 1.0 servers. People would be constantly trying to zone into Mor Dhona, getting that annoying 'zone full' message. But they will keep trying, and it will cause issues for the server, create lag and instability. Not to mention the dramas and complaints they would receive from players locked out of the zone and unable to partake in the event. The Hour of Reckoning with it's crashes and lag was bad enough, how do you think people will react to find out they can't join in just because they were not in the zone early enough to beat the 1000 other players that will turn up for it. This will happen.

Sure, 'normally' there wouldn't be that many people in one zone at a time, and that's fine, but when they do an event that only happens in one zone on a one time occasion, they are going to get serious problems. If a server takes 5000 players, then where are the other 4k of players going to go during the event? Some won't log on for the event of course, but easily over a thousand would.

They only have to look at what happened with 1.0 Hour of Reckoning, and Guild Wars 2 Lost Shores Event to see how game servers can't handle the demand such an event places on them. In both accounts, I suspect they got way more people logging into the events than expected.


They have to do instances, like GW2 - they just need better servers than ArenaNet has.


When I read the translation of that interview I was disgusted they were even having trouble deciding between which method to adapt. There isn't any choice, it must be instances.

On topic, Yoshi said that he played many games over the course of 1.0 being re-hauled. If you have played guild wars 2 you would know exactly what they plan to do if a zone it over crowded as someone has already mentioned. You will be put in a overflow area. It will be a zone that puts all characters from all worlds in this overflow. You will then enter a queue in which you will be ported into the your own world zone. This is based on who was before you.

I believe this is truly how they will do it because if you have played guild wars 2 you will notice that "FATE" or Full Active Time Event which is being planed to be test in the beta form is exactly like a dynamic event in Guild Wars 2. If they took this from Guild Wars 2, i am sure they were bright enough to bring the queue system too.

This is an issue that could occur I said. For one of you people who said anima will solve the issue well guess what they're going to make anima less usable or more precious.

It's a really big turnoff for other players to find out that they are locked out of an area an cannot cross to the next place.
Yes Instances could be a solution and with that I guess this really doesn't matter but remember with instances being created there will be a higher pull of resources having to recreate all those mobs for that instance as well so 1 server might be running several copies of some of the same zones. I'm not saying instances are good are bad. I don't mind them at all.

This isn't a complaint and I'm pretty sure in testing phases this issue possibly won't show up as an issue as most likely players will login for 2-3 day an leave. We'll lose about 30% population during testing phase because most people will just have wanted to check it out have alittle feel of it an leave.

As someone has previously stated in this thread. You don't wait for the issue to appear you have to think ahead of time befor it actually becomes a problem. That's like trying to trying to take a tum when the heartburn already occurred xD.

Anyways Instancing can solve this issue guess we'll have to wait for players to actually complain about it an lose future players that won't want to wait for a [Fix].
