What needs fixing? how long is it on? or the hate it pulls? or the animation?
do you know exactly how it works? don't you think that when they change the battle system and the way stats work, that it will also change how protect/shell work? do you always overreact to everything?
but it's not working
I don't know what's wrong with it because I haven't played the mage job much, but the time it lasts is kinda universal with all their buffs I suppose. Maybe the effectiveness? I haven't really studied so don't know. :P
What is not working? Stop giving one liners and explain the problem, come with a possible fix ... so we can discuss. Acting like a 10 year old frustrated kid is not helping you or the community.
I seriously would like to know the problem also. What's wrong with Protect & Shell?
it's not as good as it was before the November patch, seem they only cut the damage around 10%
mages die a lot from Devilet or another mobs spell during the behest or levequest
I'm going to assume that Protect and Shell are going to be rebalanced once they're done changing up the calculations with the rest of the battle changes they'll be rolling out soon.
Where is your parse data, Evangela? People keep saying it's broken but they aren't posting their parses to prove it. They'll rebalance it and probably add tiers like in XI but as of now it's not "broken", it does last a fairly short time though.
ok, it's not broken but it's unbalanced
It's already been mentioned that all the algorithms regarding damage reduction and shit is going to be re-done as part of the battle changes.
Seriously, when will people LEARN TO READ?
Several, several problems with this.
1) Use THE DEVELOPMENT TAGS. You can't make threads and just complain complain complain about every little detail, and not leave breadcrumbs so the 'developers' know you have a proposal or an issue. It's even in a sticky at the top of the general discussion board titled.. oh my holy god 'PLEASE USE DEV TAGS'!!!!
2) As many others here have said, it will probably be reworked along with 'EVERYTHING else' that is going to be changed with battle and skill issues.
3)Yes, I preferred the ffxi standard where duration was based on level + level of protect / shell up to 30 minutes.
4) If you haven't noticed, or are just stubborn then you would know that they are 'going' to be doing a lot of damn work to this game. It's people like you with constant negativity that are bringing this general discussion board into a very deep dark hole.
It's not broken it was over powered before.
which article they talk about this damage reduction?
Uh, the Protect and Shell nerf (as I like to call it) after that update was needed. Before they were changed, you could cast Shell and cut Grass Raptor's flame breath by some ridiculous amount, like 50% or something. There was absolutely no fear of death when you had it up. When you got Shell 2 and Protect 2, the changes between tier 1 and tier 2 were insignificant.
It seems when they nerfed Protect 1 and Shell 1, they just made Protect 2 and Shell 2 the power that Shell 1 and Protect 1 were at prior.
So, what's wrong with it? Nothing. It got balanced, that's all.
it seem the tier one version of both spell would later be a spell used around 10 So for now use what they give you. Seem they also going to add new raise 1-3 from the new dev post they made today. Please stop using the word "Broken" if you don't know how to use the word.
Shell 2 isn't as good as Shell 1 was before that patch
Lol, Pbarbs is far from useless.
They could "rebalance" Protect and Shell, sure. However, it really isn't needed.
Damage checks are more heavily influenced by Rank vs Rank comparison. Which imo, is the issue. That's what needs to be looked at.
Punishing Barbs is far, far from useless, it even allowed me to kill hard (for current rank) mobs by cutting a decent portion of life off of it after a powerful TP move I couldn't get out the way of in time from not paying attention (Gnat's Lightning Rape.)
When something is overpowered, you reduce it -- sometimes it's too much, sometimes it's very unoticable, however in this case, shell wasn't suppose to chop off ~40-55% of magical damage, it's suppose to go in tiers which it didn't, and an "acceptable rate" is subjective because MMORPG players don't fully know what balance is, just what they want, for example, WoW -- PvP vs PvE balance.
@Keftenk:
It's mainly the way stats are scaled and currently work, which is what they're changing. Rank vs Rank is the deciding factor, but only because of unbalanced stats where player stats are barely effective vs enemy stats which are overly effective.
I think pro and shell are fine, on FFXI both spells wasn't fucking impressive about the damage mitigations but it could safe your life.
Um, protect and shell does NOTHING. It gives you a pretty effect when monsters hit you. Oh joy, an animation. Totally worth the MP cost. Jennestia, please leave, nobody cares about you honestly. You are always defending the protect and shell saying it does something. But how can they same BOOST TO MAGIC DEFENSE on that glorious November patch and then it literally negates zero damage? Oh sorry if I want the only two buffing spells that reduce damage beyond stoneskin to actually do something. Sorry it hurts your feelings Jennestia that someone disagrees with you. But with my longer playing experience with shell, protect, shell 2, and protect 2. I go to Dodore and say "hi!" he casts scourge 2 (btw I only have 80 mnd, which I still take the same damage as if I had 174 mnd) and I take 400 points of damage. "HAHA! I'll cast Shell 2!" and Dodore casts a second Scourge II and it deals 500 points of damage?! Okay... consistently deals more damage. Shell wears off and it goes back to 400 points of damage. I'm sorry but atm, shell either doesn't work as it should or it increases the damage I take. Please take your Senior Moderator signature off as well. Nobody here cares; it just misrepresents you here. (Btw, where is your parse showing that Shell does anything beneficial? :) )
I'm not sure about how much they working at this moment
but I'm sure it's not protect you more than 10~15% damage or even 0
Parse data, please.
Btw:
When you claim something doesn't work, you provide data showing as such, because you seem to be one of the few people who actually says it doesn't work.
You show data disproving what the majority believes, not the other way around. Especially considering more people understand things need to be adjusted, not that it flatout does nothing.
Protect seems fine to me, Shell on the other hand does seem kind of gimped, some magic based attacks can one shot you if your not careful and that shouldn't be happening really, seems really cheap.
Main offenders are Imps and Salamander type monsters, so either shells effectiveness needs to be increased or certain magic based mobs need to be rebalanced.
As others have pointed out large scale rebalancing will take place in the near future so its just a matter of patience.
One thing I do agree with is that Protect and Shell should last longer 30 minutes sounds about right.
Too bad I still don't care to show you anything Jennestia. It doesn't work. Ask every mage in my linkshell if it works and all will say "lolshell". Again, they said "boosting magic defense from shell" and it literally changed the effectiveness to nothing. You can't claim the algorithm for shell is broken and then claim that shell isn't broken. Please go back to core forums. Nobody cares about you or will care. (For you know who)
This, Shell, Protect, Mighty Guard etc always seem to historically be short durations in FF games. On the topic of it doing absolutely nothing, I wouldn't say that as Yoshida commented that the formula for it is extremely complex that it's difficult to balance, however broken it is not. I use Protect on myself as every DoW I play as well; Shell I'm pretty sure it's well known that the magic balance in this game is absurdly off just like every other stat and a lot of magic attacks aren't purely magic based either, e.g "Breath" attacks tend to have other modifiers to them beyond just x element.
Here's your parse data. I play with Apple regularly and he casts protect on me and the dmg I receive tanking DOES NOT CHANGE. It doesn't fking change. People saying it has an affect are probably also checking dmg mitigation with stone skin up and not thinking about it.
I played as a 75PLD for 7 damn years. I know what protect is supposed to do for me and it does nothing of significance in FFXIV. In fact in many cases I have noticed that I take more dmg with it on. WTF is that about?! It needs to be fixed. I understand if the dev team is waiting to make adjustments until the new battle system is in place. But they shouldn't be ignoring it. They should come out and say it's not working as it should and is being fixed in a future update.
Solution: Get to rank 48 and get your Protect II and Shell II. (I don't understand this game... You actually need to play to get better omg...) /sarcasm
What's with everyone wanting everything right from rank 1 and then calling this game too easy... Imp's special attack are easily dodgeable if you keep range, you're a mage, you're supposed to keep range... Or SE should "fix" that too? And make everyone melee?
Firstly: wrong forum >_>
Secondly: Are we talking about first tier protect/shell or second tier? I think they both work.
I was doing leves with my static last night and we came up against the (in)famous Dark Devilet imp 6 times (2 in every leve, and we did it 3 times over). We died, twice, from not having shell II up, and at the time, I had a hp of 1233. With shell II up, when I got hit, I had 400+ hp left, so Im pretty certain shell II works, at least when I use it.
My gripe is hiw long it lasts give me fifteen or thrity minutes and im a happy camper. Also rank 48 for the last tier was too long mayb mid 30's would be more appropriate.
They should have one tier of protect and shell and it should increase in potency based on the casters MND stat and last longer based on the targets rank.
