Housing lottery system takes entirely too long and is poorly designed.

This one week between each lottery means 4 attempts a month. The system needs to be reworked, terribly. In 2024 this is absolutely unacceptable. They make it pathetically difficult to get a house at all and I find that to be on purpose but I won't lie, its the reason I am already considering quitting after only a month and a half. Ultima Online was a game from 1999 with a far better housing a decorating system and its freaking ancient compared to this. Just sad that a company this big would come out and say this is their best idea. With the amount of server space these use its minimal as all hell, absolutely no excuse. Just beyond aggravating and annoying.

You're not going to find too many people happy with the housing system.

But with respect to the length of the lottery period, did you consider what would happen if it was shorter? It's not like SE is slowly doling out new plots being added. The plots that are available in the lottery on the congested worlds are the ones that were relinquished or demolished during the last lottery period.

Shorter the lottery period, and you lower the potential number of plots that will be available in the next lottery period. A lower number of plots means greater competition for those plots. Greater competition increases the chance you'll lose.

While in the long run it won't make an actual difference (the same number of plots are awarded via the lottery), players start feeling discouraged about having an even smaller chance of getting one.

Longer lottery periods means more available plots to bid on and less competition for a specific plot (outside of those prime plots that are in very high demand). When there's less direct competition for a specific plot, players feel better about their chances of winning.

Shortening the lottery period won't improve things. Fixing the entire system would.

I have, and with a 4 day lottery period or even 5 would give more chances a month, the same number of houses will be available with no change, but more chances is 100% worth it. This current system is just dog water. It needs to be faster to be more fair for everyone. Also opening more plots would be as simple as adding a new zone, I am currently in game design and development myself and know that it wouldn't truly be as hard as they are trying to make it out to be. They just don't want to do the work!

It is not difficult to get a house in FFXIV. There is an overabundance of housing on the four new Dynamis DC servers. If player housing is that important to you, then you need to transfer to one of those servers. You shouldn't have joined a well established server expecting to have easy access to the housing system.

It's still so wild to me that some of you are taking this tone with people who chose a server for whatever reason and want to partake into a feature of the game that we should all have equal access to. Just wild.

Not a single person who decides to play this game (or any game for that matter) should have to do research about where to play in advance. I can imagine some new people choose servers because they like the name. Being locked out of a major feature for that random choice is an unreasonable disgrace on the behalf of those who designed it and none of you should be supporting it.

I agree that no one should have to do the research, should have to make such a choice.

But the system is what it is. Knowing that it could be otherwise and should be otherwise doesn't make it so.

The feedback has been getting left for years. It was getting left back when only Balmung was having serious issues with plot availability.

SE, for whatever reason only they know, has not done what is needed to correct the underlying problem of supply to an ever-growing population creating ever increasing demand for more plots. They keep slapping band-aids on it. Tweak the system here, add a ward there but that's it.

We can't fix things as players. The most we can do is take advantage of what opportunity exists if we want a house that badly and continue to constructively ask SE to implement a real solution instead of band-aids. If they're not certain how to do it, they can study the housing systems in other MMORPGs.

I get that the ward system was an attempt to offer something more unique than players get with the housing in most games but it is not working when the player base is this large. And yet the wards could be part of a system that does work by having the ward a common area that players pass through to enter their personal (or FC) houses. It doesn't have to start over from scratch. It just needs to be reimagined.

So do some of us come off a bit callous? Probably, but we've been fighting this fight for a lot longer than a large part of the player base has been playing the game. We know things aren't going to suddenly change assuming that they're going to change at all.

All we can do is encourage players to take advantage of what does exist while the battle to get SE to reconsider housing design goes on.

Welcome to the trenches. Maybe someone will come up with an idea that hasn't been suggested in the past that gets SE's attention.

I feel you - however.

If you want to optimize your chances of success; in all things then you would want to be informed. This goes from raids; rotations; crafting and even housing. You don't have to study up on it but then your choosing the sub-par route to get to your goal and that's fine. Also consider that Dynamis transfers are "free" so the only cost is the annoyance of being on a different DC. The issue of Housing supply on a well established server where billions of gil in commerce moves daily and folks just open PFs to beg for money to get what used to be something of an achievement to pay for a bid in the first place is the unfortunate side-effect of a forever inflating economy because SE has not made a effective mechanism to remove gil from the market; merely shift it to other players.

Its not even a matter of study - by level 20 you could see that Balmungs wards are full; people then have to prioritize whats more important to them - having a house or being a Balmung native; but you are not locked out of the feature - the difficulty of accomplishing the task is only different for you because of your choices. Its like how someone playing a Healer might find getting into trial is harder because there are only 2 slots vs the 4 that DPS have; so you will have a differing experience because of a choice you made. Or how getting a fully crafted suit of level 100 armor will cost you significantly more because your not a crafter. As the boundries of worlds in FF diminish the world you reside on will be less and less important and thats probably why folks are taking the bet to get a good Dynamis house now rather then when SE does more cross world stuff - something to consider.

When I data-center travel to visit my friends, I will sometimes check on the status of residential districts and I am blown away by the availability of plots.

If you want a house, if you -really- want a house, then there are methods of acquiring one.

It's current year so it should be easy. Lmao no, it's one week server reset schedule. This is just fine, you'd be having more of a time on the old system. If it's only been a month for you I'd say your entitled to think your somehow owed a house. Some people have been waiting literal years before getting a small let alone a large home. If you really want a home that badly server transfer over to a low pop one and pick one. I tried to get a home on the old bid system, and that was literal hell. At least this system gives everyone a fair shot, some day your luck will roll just right and them boom your subbed for life like the rest of us home owners.

I firmly believe the housing system is made with the intention to shackle players who actually care about that system, forcing you to remain subbed and 'tend' to your house or you'll lose it. There's no instanced alternative that comes close to being 'decent' in my opinion this is by design. The housing is scarce by design, after all, if plots were readily available and plenty, you could just unsub and come back to claim a house (imo the healthy way).

The lottery and changes to wards made it even harder now. You can also blame people who buy plots and resell em, it's harder now but I'm sure it happens. The system is still very much exploitable, just not as easy as before.

I think anyone who is paying a sub to this game should be entitled to some kind of permanent instanced housing that's not as pitiful as apartments with such low furniture limit. At least spice it up by adding some upgrades or unique traits.

I doubt they'd listen to us, but I think people should keep asking.

I'd say the lottery is more forgiving in a sense 'set it and forget it'. I once spent 14 hours straight spamming the placcard on the old system and in the last 30mins 5-6 people showed up out of the blue...I was lucky to have been on controller spamming that placcard.

If this is true (and frequent suspension of auto-demolition puts that into doubt), then the dumbest thing for players to do is allow themselves to get shackled to the system. That gives Square Enix control over them.

Do I care about the system? Yes, it's why I spend a lot of time in this subforum discussing the ways it could be improved.

Am I shackled to it? Not at all. If I need to take a break from the game and lose my houses, then I lose my houses. They are just virtual items in an online game.

Having things in a game is fun but they're never so important that we should allow ourselves to make stupid decisions over them.

When the system was implemented there was no auto-demolition. Nor account wide ownership restrictions. Both were added as an attempt to stretch the existing plots to cater more active players. The week long period keeps the same round available to all players even if they can only play around couple days a week (such as weekend, most commonly). And no, you wouldn't want to return to the plot camping, or resales.

The solution was to demo houses if players didn't go inside of them after an extended period of time. Players have no issue with this. It frees up a limited resource and allows other people to have access to that plot. The double edged sword is the very people who asked for them are now subjected to the rules they asked for themselves. If you go inactive, your plot will be demolished if you don't return after a certain period. Yes it does benefit S.E, since anyone heavily invested will likely keep their sub active to retain their plot. And if you grow tired of playing this game, you wont need the plot anyway.

The lotto was a player requested feature, it wasn't the magic bullet people thought, making it more accessible and considering people ability to login fewer times of week would be better for everyone and is a noble ask. But in reality that just made competition FAR stiffer for themselves if they already didnt have a plot prior to getting the change they asked for. But is infact the most fair version of a system you could ask for within this version of housing.

You have a permanent instance housing, and youre not happy with that...Yall want a plot without a demo timer...Be honest about it. Ive had my plot for the last 8 years without a sub lapse knowing what will happen if i leave for a extended period, and you seem to understand the reason why they dont change it clear as day. Its a business first and foremost and if this keeps them from adding anything more invasive revenue generating aspects to the game. I will take the devil i know to the one i dont.

You think they want you to leave indefinitely and come back whenever just like that? You arnt going to leave if you have something invested that you care about that you may not get back for a very long time if you leave. All you need to do is give them the price of a Big Mac meal once a month and you wont have to worry about your creative investment getting deleted.

They wont respond on this topic because they are well aware its a 3rd rail, and their solution is add more wards and add a higher item limit but don't directly address it. But also going instanced housing is going to have some trade-off that'll be good for the individual but will likely kill off the player generated content.

There's your problem. You see it as an investment. It's not.

It's a service. You pay to have access for the stated period of time. If your service provider goes out of business or you are no longer happy with the quality of the service they provide, you either change providers or decide you no longer have need for that type of service. It doesn't matter the hundreds or thousands of dollars paid to the service in the past. That was paid for the past access, not future.

Its both, I agree with the poster above, its the experience that makes it worth it. Like for me I enjoyed my time with world of warcraft during the WotLK-Cataclysm Era, and after the game changed I didn't care for the direction. I didn't ask for a refund. I enjoyed my time with it and I moved on.

But given I've found a creative hobby out of the carrd site using the games housing system. And if I lost access to it, well that makes the site somewhat more difficult to build on since it no longer would exist in-game and the story around it has to be reworked/ retired. It is a creative investment, and whats 15 dollars a month to maintain it, when I can spend 20 dollars on lunch?

The main thing that's bad about the new system is that you can't take advantage of people with bad bots/macros to sell your items using your retainer after you won the lot from them.

Housing in this game is bad.

You can defend it, make excuses for it, or attack people for pointing it out.

None of that changes the fact it is a bad system in an otherwise great game.

I never played DAOC but I did play LotRO for a while.

Man, their housing sucked. The automatic addition of new Neighborhoods when the old had certain types of plots filled? That was good since it meant there was always a house to buy but that's as far as good went. Their Neighborhoods were just as empty of other players as the wards are here if not more so.

As good as the idea sounds on paper, it just does not work because it doesn't take into account that players spend more of their time doing other things (including being inside of their house) than they spend outside of their houses.

Players could do a better job of making the extremely large Dimensions in RIFT feel like neighborhoods because it was possible to build multiple houses within the same instance. The individual player sharing the instance with their friends or guildmates might end up with a smaller item limit to work with because every had to share the 2500-3000 total item limit but the result of everyone working together created a real neighborhood feeling. All the Dimension owner had to do was make it available for the public to visit and a good Dimension would have a steady stream of players going in and out even if the players that built the Dimension were taking a long break from the game.

I honestly think perhaps we can split the difference here. Your a strong proponent of Instanced housing; I am a strong proponent of ward housing.
So why not make Ward instances that are tied to a FC? You don't really need to mess with too much either - your simply making a neighborhood that is a instance and has 60 plots for the FC to use. This removes FC's from the ward system entirely but also allows people to get the plot they want within a FC without having the excessive creation of instances and ideally encourages community as FC members would get plots within their ward to make things lively. Include a consistant population requirement to maintain (like 4 accounts be active for 45 days otherwise the ward is locked out until the FC returns to green status - a locked instance ward cannot be accessed by non FC members). Also there is only 1 workshop in the ACTUAL FC house; granting 1 deployable per active FC member per account (so your 7 alts do not also get subs)

I enjoyed the self storage aspect of LOTRO and the idea that they were close to the main cities - I agree that the problem was no one hung out there because all the needed amenities' were in the cities and I think that's my biggest beef. MMO's want the capital cities to seem busy so they put everything there - just adding a inn and world travel from housing wards would likely encourage more players to exist in the popular ones.

Players cant get a plot because of inactive players? Demolish Timer

Players don't have time to login all the time and placard click or get lucky walking into a empty plot? Lottery System

Everyone wants a house? Friend List limited instance housing (Sure it'll kill off the Player made community housing events, but as long as players have a plot that rarely anyone will ever visit its worth the trade off)


Everything action has ramifications, but people don't see it until things like the lottery system which they thought was going to fix everything, worked against them because it became more accessible outside of the lucky or dedicated few. Now people here are asking for things like "extra rolls for lost bids" to give themselves a leg up against competition because its "too fair"

If instance houses are in conjunction with ward housing, sure! But I'm not a fan of replacing the current system.

The solution is already there for your housing woes, just move to one of the four new worlds in Dynamis. There are many empty mansion plots still after a month but they are slowly being purchased, you still have time to buy a mansion as we speak. Transferring to Dynamis is free and you also get the Road to 90 buff too. I did that when the first four worlds of Dynamis opened nearly two years ago and I bought a mansion and won it with my solo bid before winning a relocation to Shiro. Or you could just keep being mad and hope you get a small in your crowded world when data center travel is a thing too. Sure it's restricted atm but once that's lifted, you'll be able to travel to the other data centers. Dynamis lately has been popping too, Seraph is actually very full especially xD.

FC politics can make that annoying. There would still be a limit on how many members could have a house in the ward, which would be fine for the small FCs but a problem for larger ones. If someone gets kicked from the FC by accident or as a joke, they would potentially lose everything. And there are players that have no desire to join a FC because of bad previous experiences. Should they be denied the chance to have a house for their character.

I'd still prefer making the wards a common area that the player passes through to get to their personal instanced housing. Perhaps the houses "on display" with the wards would only be FC owned but there would be no requirement for a player to belong to one of those FCs to have their personal housing there.

To make the wards feel alive, the number of players with housing tied to an individual ward needs to increase greatly. Even the current FC only wards (that aren't monopolized by the sub farms) feel empty much of the time because players are naturally doing other things in the game, including visiting their personal housing located elsewhere.

Would not have to be restricted to friends list anymore than apartments are.

There's no reason why player made events would be killed off anymore than they are by current instance limits.

The only concession I can think of that would have to be made would be not having garden or chocobo stable within instanced housing.

If there are new problems, would those problems be considered lesser or greater than the existing problems with the housing system.

Apartments aren't popular because they're a small space when much larger spaces are available to the lucky few.

Instanced housing will not require demolition because it's not loaded until a player is ready to enter it and it despawns when the last player leaves it.

Won't need a lottery system for instanced housing.

Again, nothing says instanced housing has to be limited to friend's list (though that could be made an option for those that don't want random players going in).

We've seen other games running good instanced housing systems. We do not know that SE is incapable of doing the same. We've only seen what they've decided to implement in their attempts to offer a different type of system.

Very few players are asking for wards to be removed entirely. Wards and instanced housing can co-exist.

I did that when the first four worlds of Dynamis opened nearly two years ago and I bought a mansion and won it with my solo bid before winning a relocation to Shiro. Or you could just keep being mad and hope you get a small in your crowded world when data center travel is a thing too. Sure it's restricted atm but once that's lifted, you'll be able to travel to the other data centers. Dynamis lately has been popping too, Seraph is actually very full especially xD.

Some minor details left out. Many of the districts are "on hold" meaning the competition for housing is about the same as it is everywhere else. And many people start playing this game with friends who are already on the most popular servers. They shouldn't have to give up an important aspect of the game, playing with friends, in order to experience a piece of the content. And yes there is DC travel which is mostly disabled right now, not to mention DC travel can glitch on you and lock you out of the game for days. I know because it happened to me the first time I tried it. And SE's response is just "Yeah, that happens sometimes, you just have to wait it out."

Moving to a new server isn't the solution. The solution is for housing districts to become dynamic. When demand exceeds the number of available plots then a new district is added. And make at least the interior of houses upgradable to a larger size.

So any new player that comes to the game shouldn't have a hope of getting a plot any times soon?

The community asked for a fair chance at getting a plot they got one.It's not the dedicated few you're competing against anymore, but the casual many that asked to be considered for. And they got exactly that.

HOUSING is provided to all who want to participate in it. So you can't say that a housing is unavailable to you.

The game doesn't grant you a PLOT. But nobody was granted one.

But keep responding on these forums like I anyone would really give a damn.

Housing has been an issue since launch of housing.

Housing became more of a nightmare since the "anticipated fix".

Housing has been nothing but a blight on this game since day one.


But let's keep pointing the blame at anyone but the one's who continue letting it be problem.

Every change housing got was a request from the players themselves...

Players asked for the demo timer

Players asked for Apts

Players asked for a lottery.

Take a few deep breaths, Mako, you're gonna get yourself banned from the forums continuing like that. After doing some digging, it looks like it's only been two lottery cycles since your llama FC reached the 30-day age requirement to enter. It's ok to lose some lotteries initially on a well-established server like yours, even when you stack the odds in your favor. Just keep at it, with 13 bids each time you will surely succeed sooner rather than later.

You also really ought to apologize to Solowing for those hurtful remarks, Mako. Shame on you for taking out your own personal frustrations on others.

The solution to shell FCs is to detach the workshop from FC houses. Make it a room at the headquarters of whatever GC the FC is associated with.

It wont make a dent in availability. You highly underestimate those who are collecting specific plots. The Subgil is just a bonus on top to fuel those desires.
Those plots wont magically abonded if your suggestion would become reality.

I agree 100% that most who have a house for their shell likely will not give it up. But it will cut down on the problem in the future.

Its ok he can be upset. But he wasn't there for when Apts didn't exist and if you didn't have an FC/Personal plot you COULDNT do housing. The demo timer didn't exist, and Wards were just empty plots who's owners had no intention of coming back anytime soon, if at all.

We got the demo timer, and did player complain? No, why would they feel bad for somebody who quit a year ago losing their house?

But it didn't releases houses fast enough and players were still locked out of housing. In come Apartments. Hm..They are smaller but also arnt tied to the demolish timer, fair trade off.. (before BDTH and lofting became a thing 100 slots were reasonable, our standards rose with our knowledge how to exploit the system.)

Then people with not much time to play/slower reflexes/travels alot felt they didn't have a fair shot to get a plot, (especially after shirogane released, anyone who didn't take the day off or disconnected after logging in was SoL and wasn't getting a plot 15 minutes after servers went live)

So they added in a hidden timer. But emergent gameplay became to click a placard for 16 hours a day or set a bot to do it to win a plot under the hidden timer and that wasn't healthy.

So here we are at the lottery. Oh you can only login once a week? Don't worry the game will give you 10 days to bid, Dont have fast reaction times? No need! take your time getting over there to bid. Worried about a bot? Botting has no outcome on a lottery because their input wont change anything.


The housing system is MILES better then what it used to be, tough pill to swallow.

The prime plots definitely won't appear but probably about 90% of the seemingly empty small plots probably would over several months. Why keep a house that's no longer necessary when they can let the plot demo and get back 80% of the gil paid while continuing to operate the workshop.

More importantly, those adding new workshops to their farm or starting a new sub farm would no longer have reason to purchase a plot. It would reduce their start up costs by a fair chunk while any future ward and district additions wouldn't get swamped by the sub farms that have set up new FCs in anticipation.
