Dawntrail First Expansion to Bore Me in Under 2 Weeks

I don't know what it is but this expansion feel so boring the only thing that keep me somewhat play is extreme

maybe job changes are disappointing
maybe story is disappointing
maybe content is repetitive

any recommendation to waste time on fun activities?

You've been through all the expansions. You know what content came with the expansion, mostly the same stuff we always get. You alone know what you find fun. If your bored play something else.

Havent played mutch of the msq till now so i cant confirm if its boring ( so far im having fun) but i can recommend playing and lvling bluemage if youre looking for a new point of view in gameplay. It really shakes thing up!

I'm having trouble finding motivation to play, I tried logging in yesterday and level another class to 90 but the first leveling roulette was a lvl 90 one but the tank was single pulling so I just left and logged out.
I got over 15k hours in this game, so I really loved it but goddamn. I posted 9 times in one thread back in 2019 about TOS changes and that's it, now after Dawntrail I'm at 40? 50? 60? posts, I've been happy with everything until this expansion.

I respect your personal experience that you are bored, but I add my own that the game as it is now is anything but boring to me -- while I was one of those disappointed in what the writing team delivered for this expansion's msq, I find that all the usual content - repeatable duties, FATEs, crafting and gathering, fishing, etc. have been perfectly well up to the standard of quality that keeps me playing. I am already planning my next player-organized event in game. PvP is as wild as it always is, and none of my old favorite field exploration areas or older duties are gone or anything like that. And we are just a few days away from the first tier of new raids, so who knows what that will bring?

Honestly, this is the pre-catch-up part of the game. At this point you get what classes you want to play to 100, or all of them, you focus on doing content you missed out on, doing all the FATEs, getting non-combat classes up, and then honestly, 7.05 is where the expansion really begins, when there is a bit more content.

This is how I've always looked at it.

Bar the polarizing story, it's the same as every other expansion.

Edit: As for recommendations, maybe look at Bozja or Eureka content, get those done up, maybe look at doing Baldesion Arsenal and Delubrum Reginae, or maybe try doing deep dungeons solo.

Same as always, spam fates to unlock the gemstone rewards, do hunt trains, level other jobs, get crafters/gatherers ready for the raid tier, or just play something else till the raids drop. Nothing has changed with content at launch as compared to any other expansion.

Same. It's what happens when there's barely any changes to jobs. Why would I waste time grinding to 100 when they play exactly the same at 90? Or in case of RPR, level 100 being a downgrade to 90?

I think part of this issue is that it's samey.
MSQ, expert dungeons, extreme trials, fates and levelling is the main content until normal then savage raids. Then after that it's the weekly savage grind until 7.1
That's just kinda how the game has been since stormblood. I do hope eventually the game gets way more mix ups to the core content and this expansion seems extremely content rich so hopefully for future expansions they may add something extra to the start.
I think the disappointment of the msq and the really bad job changes are the main reason you're bored.

I started playing in stormblood,

shadowbringers was refreshing with amazing story + job changes was so huge,
endwalker was for me starting to raiding + crafting
dawntrail nothing latterly nothing interesting to me

I am engaged with leveling stuff and making gil, doing fates.
But I'll admit this time feels extremely hollow, I'm not invested in any zone or character or plot point we may have in the future. You may be confusing boredom with lack of engagement and investment.

I never got bored this quickly before.. but I will be back after next patch to see if this can get me back on track

bozja and eureka is done.. i farmed all deep dungeon before dawntrail so I can have time for next big thing (I was so delusional)

IIRC RDM has a stretch of 10 levels where it's a DPS loss to interact with its procs, so you just cast more Jolts from 84 to 94. I can only call most job changes quarterhearted, because halfhearted would be too generous.

Well..there are thousands of awesome games out there. ESO, SWTOR, WoW, FFXI, GW2 might scratch that mmo itch if you want something similar.

I have just stopped playing Dawntrail. I left it somewhere in Solution 9 a week ago after seeing to the ill child. I think under circumstances of even a midling story, Solution 9 would have enraptured me and hooked me in to keep playing to the end. I can't even enjoy that. Wuk Lamat will probably go down as my most despised FF character in history. She has utterly tainted the legacy of FFXIV. I'm being dramatic about it, but my story MMO has been sorta ruined, and when your honeymoon is ruined in the honeymoon phase, you get to be a little dramatic about it.

Agreed.
While I am not bored yet with the game and look forward to the raids and other content the story really left a mark on me.
It's like it drained my motivation for this game.
I was so dissapointed in it and so annoyed I also had trouble playing so I get you and OP tbh.

I found stuff to do like farming the first extreme or leveling miner but... I don't know. In the expansions before that I sunk my teeth at every lore candy I could find. This time I just want to do anything but stuff that has to do with the stroy.

I think if you didn't like the story but that is actually the main reason for playing it's the worst case scenario for the game right now.

Right now I have fun trying to master Pictomancer and getting back to tanking. I also finally go about my island sanctuary and level my gathering jobs.

If you like Monster hunter I can recommend God Eater to you.
Genshin and Honkai Star Rail are also nice games to pick up.

Well there is no harm in taking a few weeks break until the next patch to see what savage does for you. Personally, the normal mode content is engaging enough mechanically for me to where I don't actually mind the jobs feeling of same-y, but this is personal preference, really. That said, Viper is some of the most fun I have had with a combat class in a long time.

I suppose a few of my last suggestions would be Fishing and Achievement Hunting -- I know that Achievement Hunting is a very niche, and personally I am only doing it casually, but it still has me diversifying in most facets of the game, to the point where, if I get tired of, say, levelling jobs, then I can go out and do some fishing, some triple triad, hunts, etc.,

As for fishing, I have only dabbled in this from time-to-time, but it's more one of the most diverse facets of the game, since folklore fish have such varying conditions, where some of them may be simple, and more others may be more complex and requires small optimizations to catch them.

You aren't necessarily being too dramatic. Honeymoon phase or not, the handling of that character has soiled Dawntrail pretty hard. Be as dramatic as you want. I know I've personally always tried to find neutral ground on the story, but this wasn't possible in the case of Dawntrail.

I just hope that the developers look back to what has made every other character interesting, and characters with staying power for years, upon years. It isn't by brute forcing that character like nothing else, but all of the subtleties across the way, the succinct manner in which they told those characters' stories, either through other characters, or state of affairs that may otherwise conflict with the goals and aims of what that character sets out to do. E.g., Wuk's motivation to bring peace for Tuliyollal fell near enough on deaf ears to me, since there was no hardship nor grief struck until much later in the story - and well, when we're 'involved' in pushing that character into succession then it is already a predetermined outcome.

It's not just you, OP. Yawntrail is really, REALLY bad. The job "changes" don't change much of anything, the story is irredeemable, the music is all over the place, and it's probably the most miserable experience I have had in any expansion in any MMO.

Agreed. This is the first time where the expansion has me just...not even bothering to log in. I hit level 100 but haven't finished the MSQ because I can only handle it for an hour or so before I am so frustrated and bored that I leave the game.

I've been here since ARR launched, have a house, and 8(yes really) characters with classes at 90....and I just don't have any motivation or desire to play. This expansion feels so flat that I have been playing GW2 instead of logging into FFXIV.

It's post expansion lull, it's the return to normal now, the subscribers are lowering because covid might be coming back... some guy in madagascar is coughing, that's the reason you're not having fun. The weather has changed so the game might be becoming less fun for you

It's interesting to see people continously comment on Wuk Lamat as though we did not just have Zero "Ruining" Endwalker. Between that and StB I'm pretty sure the general audience of this game just, for whatever reason, doesn't want a semi main character outshining the WoL. It was just ok for Ardbert I guess because he wasn't there that much and well, the other obvious factor between him and the aforementioned characters.

The upcoming PvP changes in 7.1 will probably make or break it to me.

I'll just go to story only player and sub once per expansion if they don't throw a bone like fully augmentable PvP set or ridiculous multi top 100 grind for Crystalline Legend or whatever.

Yes, that would be me. I come back 2-3 months before the expansion launches (depending on how much I have left to do) and play through that and then play for a couple weeks post expansion until after I finish the msq and anything that jumps out at me that I want to do.

After that, I might come back once, maybe twice depending on what new stuff has been released this expansion (island sanctuary, blu, etc) until just before the next expansion.

My mind straight up revolts at the entire notion of a gear treadmill, and I have little to no interest in grinding dungeons or fates. For me story is everything. In every other mmo I never even step foot in a dungeon, I'm 100% into questing only(and was soooo disappointed ng+ didn't offer xp so I could happily level every job through questing here as well).

So yes, in this game the MSQ is probably 90-95% of the game to me, so dawntrail's craptastic msq has turned out to be worthless to me. No, actually, worse than worthless. I've paid for and played bad games before, that's not really an issue. What is the real issue is the loss of what could have been. I was actually excited for a nice low-stakes expansion, to go back to being a simple adventurer where no one knows me or is expecting anything. Where I can wander around and help random people with their problems and explore and discover cool new places or lost ruins etc.

Dawntrail basically robbed me of an msq and it will be 4 yrs from endwalker to 8.0 until I get a new one thanks to this hot mess.

"You just don't want anyone else to outshine WoL, unless it's written well," Is how that reads to me.

We didn't complain mommy had to carry us through the entire Ultima Weapon fight. We didn't complain when Estinien got the killing blow on Nidhogg. We didn't complain Ysayle got the hands down coolest moment in 2.0. We didn't complain when the entire damn cast came to our rescue in ShB and EW.

So maybe, just maybe, there's a deeper writing issue so many people were turned fully against DT when they try to mimic the same thing with Wuk Lamat jumping into the last trial?

I really feel bad for you, story of new 10 years saga was but just cash grab to all people that thought 7.0 was a foundation.. it was a disaster or an introduction..

to me dawntrail shows that SE isn't interested to start another 10 years for FFXIV.. as I think they value the game as milking machine to invest on crab NFT projects .

Job changes seem to be very low effort. Two years for 1 expac and the fruits of their labor are mostly oGCDS that you press once every two minutes devoid of any interaction with your current rotation. Some jobs even became worse to play.

Prioritizing combat mechanics over job design hurts the game in more ways than one. Content becomes dull once players figured out the puzzle. Job, however, is the only means to interact with various content.

If jobs are boring, doing FATE is boring. If jobs are boring, doing solo duties is boring If jobs are boring, doing deep dungeons is boring. If jobs are boring, reclearing high end content such as Savage feels repetitive.

Job itself needs to be engaging to play for all content to be enjoyable.
