All this amounted to was Thancred dropping some rocks in our path in a dungeon.

I feel lied to
i felt pretty insulted when he dropped those rocks...
but i did think it was the start of more shit throwing. it was disappointing
Was there advertisement or just something a dev said once? I never bought it anyway, since the conflict we were being sold on was so low stakes to begin with. Like, how seriously at odds could they really be in this scenario? lol
The scions are going to be PITTED against each other in this rite of succession!
Betrayal between friends?! Anything can happen!
It was probably stupid of me to expect a duel with Thancred and Urianger, It would've been cool though.
I would've loved to have had some friendly competition with my fellow scions. Hell, they could've been used as learning opportunities for Poochie...I mean Wuk to give her some actual character development.
If only the Scions had someone who managed to build a large group, almost akin to a nation and have it taken away from him, forcing him to learn from his hubris and mistakes. A character like that would've had a lot to teach someone who wants to lead a country. Or maybe if the Scions had a hot-headed character who learned to temper her ferocity with compassion for others. Imagine the wisdom a character like that could impart on a future queen. Oh, even better, how about a character that despite being skilled was always a bit behind because he couldn't control aether like everyone else, and had to rely on his wits. If he suffered a tragic loss, which forced him to grow that would be even better. He might have been able to teach Wuk important lessons about love, life, and loss.
Unfortunately the Scions don't have any characters like that. Only cardboard cutouts that constantly ask, "Where's Wuk Lamat?" when she's not on screen.
You guys thought this was going to be just a summer vacation for the Warrior of Light? Think again!
*changes slide*
Check this out. Eliminator.
Bet you wonder what that's all about, huh? It's probably something massive... stay tuned!
I think I'm done with media tours after all these misdirections this time around
Thinking about it just makes me sad, Dawntrail gave me permanent trust issues
I just wanted to punch Thancred in the face
I kinda expected Alisae to knock Thancred on his ass, since he said he wouldn't hesitate to do it to her. Oh well.
After the Sisters/Anima reveal and actual use, I stopped assuming anything shown would be a trial, or even necessarily a dungeon boss. I had forgotten entirely about the Eliminator, though I guess it's going to show up in the raid.
Wait, it's *that* boss? Wow, I looked into the Eliminator a lot less than I thought I did, I didn't even recognize it.
Well Eliminator is in the MSQ and got its cinematic entrance. What's wrong about showing an image of him before? They couldn't have shown others trials without spoiling the plot guys. Doesn't feel as misleading and lying as the "Scions are divided"
They also said it was a low stakes summer vacation, and immediately we're competing against someone who wants to create an ethnostate, and another who wants worldwide domination.
That's to say nothing about where the story goes after that.
What's worse is that they actually had a winning formula in one zone. The overall goal is to get to Yyasulani, but we're distracted by someone whose treasured bracelet was stolen, and we need to get it back without killing anyone. Right there, we've got a low stakes plot with motivation, conflict, likable characters, and room for escalation. And it does escalate into a High-Noon duel. They even use rubber bullets so no one actually has to die.
I'd like some more of that please! How hard would it have been to have a simple race to get to the golden city between two teams of scions? We explore some ancient ruins, maybe fight a legendary monster or two, help the people out with their issues, and it never progresses past a simple friendly rivalry.
I don't even think I'm getting bogged down in expectations, That's literally all we're shown in the trailer. Everyone's just doing their own thing having a good time. We're fighting Gulool Jaja, Estinien is hunting, Y'Shtola is studying. We're all having a good time together. Meanwhile, G'Raha and Y'Shtola don't even show up until lvl 97, and they feel very tacked on. G'Raha is only there to exposit on things that wouldn't make sense for Alphinaud or Krile to do.
I mean we could sue SE for false advertising at this point.
I don't remember where I read it, but I could have sworn there was an article about the higher-ups at SE suggesting that mature storylines weren't the way to go and they wanted storylines that were more power-of-friendshipy.
I don't know, maybe I'm misremembering that, but it's sure what it feels like. Does everything have to be an existential threat? Okay, no it doesn't need to be the end of the world all the time. But there's a lot of space in between for solving problems, we saw that with some of the patch stories over the years. Not existential threat, but a threat needing a serious group of heroes to solve the problem nonetheless.
I don't blame SE though. It seems like all companies have reached that point where they are so bloated that the MBAs are in charge, the creative folks have either been pushed out or their spirits so crushed they are just doing whatever they can to survive, and the only thing holding the brand together is, well, trading on the brand's legacy goodwill.
I wish they would just bring in some new characters, especially if they aren't willing to take the ones they have in directions that have consequences.Quote:

Do you maybe mean this here?

There were some articles were Yoshida apparently said that he is done with darker stories. I don't know though how accurate the translation was.
Wow, I completely missed this stuff, or maybe overlooked it because they were talking about "new projects." But the tonal shift they talk about sure does sound like what happened with Dawntrail, doesn't it? Hildibrand comedy inserts, all rainbows and sunshine... To be honest, I do still find it rather strange that players and devs act like FF16 was some sort of "darkness personified" game, while FF14 is apparently "very light with craziness all over the place."
Neither of those was ever the case. FF14 was dealing with heavy, world ending themes from its very inception. The world literally got nuked with ARR, with tons of Eorzean inhabitants violently dying. And the Hildibrand stuff that supposedly balances this out (according to the article)... is a completely optional storyline that many people never even touched. Outside of Hildibrand, I struggle to even recall any "goofs" or whatever. FF16 meanwhile has slavery and people dying... sure... What Final Fantasy game doesn't? They all boil down to essentially the same things in the end, and FF16 was no different despite making the world medieval and copying a few Game of Thrones things.
All that is to say - FF14 can't go to its light, comedic roots because it doesn't have any. And FF16 isn't nearly as super duper depressing emo dark as the team liked to hype up for the media.
It didn't even make any sense.
First of all, it's not a race, they make that perfectly clear. Second, you're endangering your friends and the precious sister of your over-protective employer, how did he approve of this? Honestly, a very insulting move considering there's absolutely no reason for it.
