I'm sure by now we've all heard that leveling in 2.0 will be different from how it currently is. I'm not making this thread to debate about which system of leveling is better, its a thread about the concern for how leveling with content with work in FFXIV.
Am I the only one that doesn't see how a content driven leveling system would work in a game that you level multiple classes on one character? Are we going to do the same quests and content 7 times to max out our character or are there going to be multiple routes to go? In games like WoW and Aion, content driven leveling was fine because you were only doing it once per character and if you wanted to play a different class, it at least made some sense to do the story again because -that- character didn't experience it.

What I imagine is that we'll get a solid chunk of exp from the main story, then another solid chunk from our job/class specific quests. Added together, these two would likely get you very far in the leveling process for your first job.
When you later want to level your other jobs, you might not be able to get exp from the main quest anymore, but there should still be job/class quests for your new job to do, which would get you pretty far, but not as far as for your first character where you could combine this with main quest exp. After that, there would be "normal" quests available for all classes.
In my opinion, giving players a smooth and varied leveling experience for their first job is the most important part. Showcase the story, lore, character progression, pretty graphics and good music in a process that feels rewarding, and isn't repetitive or frustrating. Now that they already love the game for all these parts, it might not matter *that* much that their next job won't get all the way to the top from quests alone. Furthermore, they know the game better and will be able to level more efficiently anyway. Remember, your first max level job is usually the slowest.
I like being able to level jobs with quests, but I would be entirely fine with being out of quests (except class/job quests) for something like my 3rd or 4th job.
So basically, casuals who join mainly because they want to experience the story and play with friends they already have would get a great experience, and when they've become addicted (or fallen in love with the game, whichever comes first!), the game would gradually shift exp gain away from mainly quests to quests + normal killing. -

how varied is quest leveling? There is hardly any choice in this leveling system. It doesn't work in other mmos, it definitely wont work here.

From what i understand this new method will only work till lv 20 or so anyway right. Considering that u can go from 1 to 20 in less then 2h now, even shorter if u had a PL, i don't see the problem with content based lvl progression for early Lv's. Most MMOs do this already, Just doing starter quests in Aion will take u pretty fair in Lvls before u need to start making PTs.
Also i doubt the main story line missions will be repeatable so from my point of view, it seems more like its designed to give new players a headstart on their first class/job. -

Honestly i don't understand why so many people are getting worked up over this. First everyone was whining that there isn't enough lvling options or now they add more options and people still complain. I don't see what harm it can possibly do considering u can also go from 1-20 in 2h or so solo and even faster if u get someone to PL you. I'd rather new players do these quests and learn the system as they progress then we have a bunch of new comers shout for PL in town at lv 1.

It sounds like Aion...but like you said OP, it only works in Aion because its your one and only job. Doing it for all the jobs..it will lose its novelty really fast. I loved exp parties...in XI when leveling I actually had to pay attention on my jobs that I leveled, pulling was fun too. Quest grinding is bleh...

I'm going to give Yoshi the benefit of the doubt and expect that there will be a variety of activities to level. From questing to xp grinding to story progression, its all already in the game, just a bit lopsided is all. For example, you get nearly half a level's worth of xp for completing the L46 story mission.
However, levelling multiple classes does seem a bit tricky under a quest based system. My guess is that however guildleves will be re-worked is how you will be able to never run out of quest content. To that end, it seems that if the zones were redesigned as a natural level progression, with hamlets and outposts being the main gathering points, then you would get repeatable quests / leves there in order to level multiple classes. No more going back to town, grabbing 8 leves, and warping back to a spot.
Again, that's just conjecture, but it makes sense and would be a neat hybrid between WoW esque questing and the current guildleve system, and would allow for repeatable questing for multiple classes. -

This really comes down to a sit and wait attitude, it sounds interesting and perhaps classes will have more defined quest oriented towards them rather than the simplistic journey we are currently given. It's very possible that the lv 20/30/37 quest will be designed to give you enough xp for 1 lv and be more involved then what we have now. Or those could stay as they are now and a new line of class quest will be added at 10-20-30-40-50 which are more involved then the class quest we have now.
The way they seem to be planning the new leveling system is to make it more of a journey and less of a pull and group kill while people PL one another. Basically they will most likely make it where a group who runs through a dungeon together of the same lv will be able to earn more xp in x amount of time thena party who just grinds. At the same time though the group that does the dungeon will also have a chance to get rare/ex loot compared to those that just grind.
Most likely "grinding" wise will only be possible through guild leves but leveling outside of GL will no longer be a viable option and most likely just be used to gather materials and spiritbond high level gear.
Though only time will tell and perhaps it will change based on the input giving during alpha. I'm glad he understands the "importance" of VA as to where it should be ina story. I look forward to seeing the a scenes acted out in the main story plots but when it comes to "killing a horde of mobs infesting x area" there's no need to vocalize such a simplistic task since it doesn't add to what you are doing. But for the main story to see that vocalized and acted out brings out the scenes that should have more life to them.
They seem really ambitious to add a lot of new quest every 2 months so I doubt people will find themselves repeating the same quest if they lv a new class from 1-50 but of course time will tell XD. -

content leveling just means you'll be doing other than direct grinding making less of a pain, but thats if they make it other than kill quest.
