What if the new caster job is Onmyoji

Onmyoji has been constantly teased since Stormblood in Kugane, with gradual additions to the teasing.

- Appearances in Bozja fates
- Lore drops in Mount Rokkon
- Lore tied to Doma as well, with a certain group of Onmyoji escaping Doma during the occupation due to persecution by the empire.
- and probably more mentions I may have overlooked and missed

So what does it have that other casters don't?

Well, Onmyoji according to Yoshi P would likely be this games version of Oracle. If you don't know what Oracle is, Oracle comes from FFV, and was known for its predict command, which is a command ability learned from the Oracle job class, exclusive to the Advance and subsequent versions of Final Fantasy V. It selects one of ten abilities, based on the last digit of the caster's current MP before casting the move and deducting MP. The power of that ability depends on the last digit of the target's current HP: the higher the number, the more powerful the ability. It wasn't used much by fans of the series, because it was unreliable. They were used more for their high magic stats.

I feel like the future telling of this job would be a good counter to balance Astrologian in the lore, and show that there are other jobs that can predict the future. It would likely be themed in some of its spells, equipment, and whatever quests are involved to give it flavor.

Another cool fact about Oracle, is each characters "aura" color of the magic would be different depending on who used it. I think this would be a great unique job feature, and would make it more customizable. Imagine if you could pick Gold, Pink, Purple, Red, Blue,
etc. It would be similar to bard in that you have a unique non essential mechanic for the job. Color selection in my opinion on a job would be a dream come true. Though it would have to be simple to program. I think if they made all the skills easily color changeable for such a job, it would be simple, and effective at honoring the originals lore.

Now, here is where Onymoji differs from Oracle. They are known in the game to use spell tags, protection seals, and divination techniques that were known in the real worlds Asia.This in my opinion could enhance the class, and make it much more interesting.

In my opinion some form of Oracle, or Onmyoji would be incredible in the game, and would set it apart from other magic classes heavily. Even if Onmyoji doesn't fit with the New World, I still think it would be a good way of honoring the east. Especially because we can always return to it in a later expansion, and expand on the job. I love it when you get a new job, and then get to go home to its location later. It's so cool when that happens in this game, and is one reason why I was disappointed that Sage didn't have as prominent of a lore appearance in Endwalker compared to other jobs with home locations in the game. Oracle and Onmyoji would be wonderful for world building, and shouldn't make this mistake as Sage often did.

Be prepared for an influx of people telling you Oracle is Astrologian and it will never happen. Geomancer gets that treatment all the time. Just because it also reads the future it’s basically an eastern themed Astrologian.

We're going to a mesoamerican-themed "new world" continent.
Thematically, Onmyoji wouldn't fit here, considering real world parallelisms, something like Druid/Shaman would make more sense.
Then again, this is pure speculation, and since it's a fantasy setting they can justify any job being from anywhere.

Are there jobs that could currently fit that bill? A Shamanistic job could be cool but that's essentially BLUs background and Druidism was conjurer before it became WHM though I'm not sure how much of that remains.
Not that it would really hinder the devs either way since the they could now just make OC Jobs.

Do you have any sources for onmyouji=oracle comment? Because everything in game that we have involving the onmyouji involved them being, effectively, arcanists who use spell slips or incantation to summon various shikigami.

I feel like with Final Fantasy XIV, the devs don't care about this so much. They usually have LONG gaps between the job types i.e. ranged magical dps, so with that development in mind, it doesn't matter.

Remember we got the non Ishgardian Astrologian years before going to Old Sharlayan proper, and Monk way before going to Ala Mhigo. This can happen again.

Well I mean the game themselves told us that geomancer is eastern version of AST because they both draw powers from the stars (with Geomancer focusing on the earth, hence why they use CNJ spells).

Pretty sure the ninja turtles are the hint for the melee class (Corsair) and not for the magic dps.

Regarding the magic job, I expect Krile to use this job, and therefore expect an FFV-inspired job. From there, you don't have much choice....Time Mage, Geo, and indeed Oracle, so....

One thing I dislike about fans of this series, is people are too quick to be dismissive just because something is similar.

The stars below, and the stars above are already a huge enough difference for me. That's enough for a complete reverse on the style of spells. I know Astrologian got some of its later spells from Geomancer quests, but classes learning from each other is not unheard of. Fans need to stop being so quick to shoot ides in the foot, just because of similarities. Monk, and Dancer are very similar, being that they both use historically real world monk style weapons. It doesn't mean they ended up the same though.

I said that the game told us that geo and ast were theorized to be from the same school back then, but the were divided because one look into the stars and one is the earth. On top of that, ffxiv GEO spells are CNJ spells. So it's not just a "fans are quick to dismissive"

If it were up to me, I have no problem GEO being a new job. They could either retcon the CNJ spells, or maybe have us learn another GEO style to justify it as new caster. Same with Onmyoji, which imo is more distinguished and have better possibility to become new caster than GEO and Time Mage.

Or just lean into the fact that geomancy is a recovering job, because it was forgotten by the main races. A recovering job can be restored, but also pushed into new directions.

I don't think they necessarily have that standard all the time.

We got Ninja way before stepping foot in the Far East. We got Dancer in an expansion before going to their homeland. Gunbreaker's origins were in Shadowbringers but a side story not part of the MSQ at all.

Of course, it's still likely that the jobs are featured in tandem with the expansion's locale, but that doesn't exclude the possibility of at least one of them not being from that place.

Tell me though, are they wrong to do so? With how CBU3 wants new jobs to be "distinct" in some fashion from the already existing jobs it's no wonder people will dismiss something for being too similar to something that we already have. Course then you get people pouring out the woodwork to say "But what about Dark Knight and Reaper?" which granted are rather similar but are distinct enough from each other to justify their co-existence. Geomancer is too similar to not one but two already existing jobs/classes which makes even more people doubt it could be made a job. That and I doubt they want to go back to the solo instances that include an NPC geomancer combatant and update them to have them make sense with the job being playable now instead of them just being a reskinned CNJ/WHM with a bell in place of a staff.

If they decided to make geomancer a job anyway hey more power to them.

EDIT: As for Onmyoji, perhaps it could happen, perhaps not. I feel like they might say it's too similar to summoner.

By the end of the Astrologian job quest from 80 we know that Leveva was trying to think of a way to combine both astrology and geomancy together to form a new school of magic. When you talk to Kyokuho now in Kugane, he basically says the same thing about trying to figure out a way to combine both.

What if this new caster ends up being the combined schools of geomancy and astrology to form maybe Onmyouji. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Don't forget... if it's weapon is a really big abacus you can also rapidly move around with it by using it as a skateboard.

That...isn't even remotely close to what I said but whatever floats your boat lmao. What is an onmyoji? A spirit caller. It would call spirits to fight for them which is almost word for word what summoner does but with egis. And the devs have already made plain their dislike for pet jobs.

Tbh I dont believe that rules pet jobs out entirely, but rather just means that any 'pet' job will just have the 'pet' be a fancy skill animation rather than a real presence in the game, just like Reaper's voidsent or Summonner's new main 3 'summon' abilities are right now. Just without the jank of carbuncle, and with different aesthetics. IMO, the key difference to look for in new job isn't even really 'how it will play', as thats easy to make for any job, its much moreso 'how aesthetically different it is to existing jobs'. Reaper and Summoner are very different aesthetically, and while it was argued that DRK and RPR are similar, I can see 'similar' aesthetics existing in different role slots.

TBH I don't really care for Mr. Happy. I met him way back when FFXIV did the escape event, and he threw a big fit because he couldn't win, and demanded that we give up our photo opportunity. :/

I do however really like the idea of Corsair as a job. Another gun job would be pretty neat. Especially if it was different from Machinist in severe ways. Though I hope that the gun and combat is unique enough to make it worth it. Perhaps they will wield pistols instead of full sized guns. I'm aware Machinist has some pistol models, but the way the guns work are modified, and usually a bit bigger. The other gun types are just from rare occasions like the Makai collab.

I look at it as being 'what is the point in GEO, when the lore says AST and GEO are very similar (and the job NPCs are looking to fuse aspects of one into the teachings of the other, hence Earthly Star existing iirc)', Additionally, the questline involves AST barriers enhancing/replenishing the GEO barriers, not 'replacing' them.

In terms of direct translation of game mechanics, and so that GEO doesn't just feel like WHM 2, I think the best way to do GEO would be as a tank focused on creating elemental barrier effects. After all, we don't hear about how Geomancy be healed from their wounds (which writes off healer), and making it Caster would be kinda meh for reasons stated above, but we do know that it 'protects an entire city' with a massive barrier. Based on Feng Shui, the technique of 'manipulating fortune based on the positioning of yourself relative to your surroundings', and there's one role in particular that has (well, had, I guess) a focus in their gameplay based on 'positioning self relative to enemy': Tank. Or Melee, I suppose, but then I wouldn't know where 'protecting' comes in for Melee. Geo as Tank, pulling enemies to specific locations to manipulate their fortunes to be 'not good' and yours to be 'good', the synergy from the questline of AST/GEO being expressed due to them being healer and tank respectively, it all adds up in my mind so much cleaner than 'GEO as Caster', because as a caster, it has to cannibalize WHM's old elemental themes to have... probably similar gameplay to WHM.

Or you could just reskin BLM, such that Earth/Fire are analogous, Wind/Thunder are the DOT, and Water/Blizzard are the MP restoring phase. In fact, GEO's 'identity' from old games, of it's one skill Geomancy changing effect based on it's environment, sounds like it'd be best served if you dropped an AOE and had to stand in it. As DPS that sounds pretty horrid, Ley Lines is already meme-material, but there is one class that drops a 'ground AOE' and it isn't completely terrible (only 'sort of terrible'): DRK, with Salted Earth. So GEO could have it's kit revolve around having, say, 5 different puddles, all on a shared 5s CD and 30s duration (so there's 100% uptime, but you can quite easily reposition as needed), and depending which it's dropped, one of it's skills (maybe it's spender, Bloodspiller/Fell Cleave equivalent) changes in effect. Watery puddle gives you more selfhealing, windy mountaintop gives a wind DOT to the enemy, volcanic crags give additional fire damage as a second hit, etc.

That's because geomancer is litterally named in Astrologian questline, and it's strongly implied the 60 to 70 Astrologian spells are based on geomancy in the quest. That's kinda a good reason, It would imply to rewrite the whole Astrologian questline to make sense if the geomancer was something totally different. It's not impossible, yet I would not bet on it. Oracle/Onmyoji doesn't have that problem.

Well, it's not the first time they'd be butchering the AST lore to hamfist something in, and even if they did do that to put GEO in the game, I still doubt it'd be the last time AST catches a retcon, job's cursed
