IMO:

WHM has the most cohesive kit and as such, for all it's flaws, it's in the best place of all the healers in my eyes. It doesn't trip over it's own kit and everything just makes sense.

At least if you take it in isolation from the rest of the game that is.

IMO WHM is in a strange spot where it's almost certainly going to get worse again with the next expansion due to SE likely going minimum effort and testing again if Endwalker is anything to go by. For this cycle to be broken, SE really need to figure out where they stand with regards to healer kits vs the content we actually tackle them with.

The current style of mitigation focused Savage content with burst healing requirements coupled with casual content that is almost entirely non threatening could be absolutely fine if healer's were more in line with either SWTOR's/Warhammer Online healers or even something like Summoner in early BnS (VERY loosely FFXIV Dancer with more healing).

The other solution of course would be to roll back the clock and make healing more akin to ARR/HW with just about everything from dungeon trash to raid bosses slamming out a lot more damage.

Both options have issues, as much as I'd prefer bonkers healing requirements, I think that taking the Swtor/Warhammer approach with healers is the better one for the long term health of the game. Throwing out banzai healing requirements doesn't really solve the monotony of casual content as a healer, meanwhile for sure there's people that will absolutely hate healers being covertly redesigned into functional DPS, but I'd wager a good portion of those people barely realise that they are just DPS already.

TLDR: Of all the healers. WHM is most dependent on content and encounter direction needing to change first IMO.

Needless to say, I'm not going to be nearly as kind to the other healer jobs ;)

Basic, boring and for the so call starting friendly healer, mp issues, expensive punishing healing spells. Guilty of teaching bad healing habits to new people to healing( I use to be in that myself so I wont say am guilty of it until I learn ast and was taught by advance people).

Has pretty spells and nice casting animations. Its my personal favo co healer strangely when I was noct ast or atm when am sage, strangely for some reason whm/sage just feel so right because their lack of party buff makes up for their BIG personal damage which kinda makes the whol ast/sch comp biasness undeeded. even though I do not mind ast/whm. Finally I play whm over sch anyday imo my worst healer always.

WHM was the class I wanted to main with AST being the curious back up (as a friend got me into FFXIV by talking about the cards... and then telling me that before I joined they got rid of them).

I want to like WHM. I really do. There's nothing for me to really like about it other than CNJ job quests and artifact gear. (I was estatic to get the iconic lv50 gear).

Being a GCD healer... Why can't it be like BLM or RDM where the cast times have a purpose? I think that would be interesting. Maybe not a carbon copy of either but give meaning to it being a GCD healer. Make it DO something.

The Lily system got better I guess in the expansion I refuse to play it in.

It still doesn't become a thing until after you reach HW... why?
You still don't get Affaltus Rapture until SHB. W H Y????
I want more abilities to work with it but I feel like that's a bad idea.

Free Cure still exists. ...Could it at least work in the reverse? Where you use Cure 2 to get a proc of Cure 1? Or.... when you get the Lily system you have a chance to not spend a Lily but still contribute to the Blood Lily?

WHM was not made for me. I'm a healer who's been healing in too many MMOs for it. But its lacking SOMETHING and it needs to get it.

Hate.

I liked the aesthetic before it became all white glitter and gentle tinkling noises for its abilities. A few were fine. Now it's all tinkles and glitter.

I liked the idea of the healer that could overpower problems if pressed...until Square decided that all other healers could do the same thing instantly and for free at the low low cost of cooldowns that make said oomph *only* available every time damage goes out. While having utility on top of it that WHM doesn't get because it's the "raw power" healer dontcha know. Having utility just wouldn't make sense!

That it's the designated boring healer for babies that isn't allowed a whisper of complexity because it'd make Sylphie brain go hurty. If it had a gameplay loop beyond spamming uncreative potency bomb heals and boring basic b*tch magic missile spells the universe would implode.

That it has some of the most simplistic decision trees straight lines I've ever seen in an RPG.

That the skill ceiling is more presses of one boring white glitter-flinging button.

That Heavensward tricked me into thinking this class would ever develop instead of getting an icepick straight up the eye socket to serve as the testbed for doing the same thing to the rest of the role. Healers aren't classes for humans to play and master; they're trust NPC scripts that exist to make the DPS fun.

WHM is my favorite healer. Though I don't find it very enjoyable to heal right now, so I feel somewhere between 'like' and 'neutral' at present.

WHM is classic. Recognizable spells, recognizable gear. Getting to heal your teammates is fun!

What do you dislike about it?

In non-EX/Savage content there's not enough healing to do. 80% of the time there's nothing to heal, so I'm just playing as the most boring DPS imaginable for the bulk of every fight. A skilled tank frequently doesn't even need support from a healer. The role feels vestigial and superfluous.

What would you like changed about it?

Honestly? This would ruffle some feathers but remove every WHM button that does damage, then balance the fights for a healer who's healing no less than 80% of the time. And that likely requires a rebalance so that tanks actually need a healer to survive dungeon content. Let my healer heal.

So, let's give WHM a toggle that does exactly that. It could be in the style of SGE's Eukrasia, or it could be a "free" action like placing SCH's fairy. It could affect only the next spell, or it could function more like a stance. For now, these details don't matter much to me. The important quality is that there be a cost when toggling from single-target to multi-target: potency per target goes down, duration of over-time effects goes down, MP cost goes up, cast time goes up, or any combination of those. The cost could scale with the number of targets, if we're worried about dungeons vs. trials/raids.

Next, make all of WHM's targetable spells single-target by default (so, this excludes Holy), and prune spells that become duplicative of other spells. Also, turn WHM's existing shields and mitigation into spells.* Add other fun spells now that hotbar space is not a concern in the slightest. With a bit of tuning on numbers... voila! A job that's more inline with the white mages of eld.

* Yeah, yeah, someone's going to complain about "damage neutrality," but I'll leave my rant on that for another day.

WHM already has the lowest number of buttons of any job in the game, why are we pruning its buttons, including it’s only useful button (temperance) in favour of a slightly unwieldy eukrasia system that fixes a problem that doesn’t exist

Rating:
I feel pretty indifferent about WHM, at least so long as it's constrained by the same things as the other healers. It's functional but dull, while some others are slightly less dull but that much more clunky or messy*. But, I also think every healer has significant room for improvement.

* By "clunky or messy", I'm referring to fine details like Eukrasia's recast time not scaling with Spell Speed, Pepsis's exploitability so varying with time until/since the next server poll check, (inconsistently) slow pet action responsiveness, the inability to queue Draw while still playing the Card currently held / the complete lack of reason for still initially hiding the Card now that it begins cooling instantly, etc. Those things add up, imo.

Like:
The versatility of the Lily system.

Dislike:
That it just... doesn't really have anything else going for it, gameplay-wise. I also dislike its elemental aesthetics having been turned instead into shades of, at most diverse, 99% White, 99.9% White, and 100% White.

Change:
Ideally, I'd actually rework the job almost from scratch to be built far more around its elements, with many actions acting either or both as offensive or defensive throughputs while generating element-specific resource that can likewise be spent for multiple effects, making WHM a master of responsive soft utility.

In particular, also, I'd have Water's mechanic (into which most heals feed) provide some sort of "rush" mechanic whereby resource can be spent to instantly finish off the rest of an ability's cooling time --each point of gauge or whatnot skipping both, say, 2% and 1 second of the CD, as not to only be used on Benison [short] or the likes of Asylum [long CD]-- (with said heals MP costs greatly reduced or in some way refunding themselves), thereby also giving WHM a slight edge in especially healing intense scenarios.

Elemental vibes with accordant versatility and decision-branching/-pathing, only occasionally and deliberately coalescing into pure white magic.

Appreciate all the comments so far. Just popping in to note two things.

It surprised me to find this out, but in 1.20, this actually was a thing CNJ had. Sacred Prism. It was a CD (90 sec, maybe?) that made the next healing or enhancement spell have a longer cast time, but be AOE.

Your description made me think of FF9 where Garnet/Eiko can cast their heals as single target or AOE for the party when you tap one of the trigger or bumper buttons.

Not...quite, I don't think. WHM has enough buttons that if you include Sprint, Potion (mount in the field), and LB, you're at 33 buttons, which is EXACTLY 1 more than two crossbars sets can hold if you equip all your role actions. It has 1 button too many by that metric. Even if you don't care about that metric, several Jobs have fewer hotbar slots needed. Offhand, I believe SMN, MCH, RDM, and possibly DNC. SGE and WHM also have the same number of hotbar slots taken up, I believe. So no, WHM does not have the lowest number of buttons of any Job in the game.

I can run the numbers again to get an accurate count, but in terms of hotbar spots, WHM isn't actually on the low end, it's more the low end of the middle (or high end of the low, depending on how you want to look at it), tied with SGE.

If you mean actions, then it has less than SGE (since Eukrasia double dips 3 buttons, so a net change of +2), and SMN has several sets of Gemshine/Astral Flow/Ruin 3 buttons, and RDM also has 5 Enchanted versions of its weaponskills and Flare, Holy, Scorch, and Resolution that share the Thunder2/3, Aero 2/3, Jolt/Impact and Jolt/Impact buttons, respectively. But those don't take up additional hotbar spaces since all of those things are context hot-swaps of "This action cannot be assigned to the hotbar."

It's 'functional enough to clear content'

If you want me to dig up something I 'like' about it, I 'appreciate' the fact that it is a healer option that has no extra complications surrounding 'how to heal'. It fulfills the paradigm of the 'Holy Priest' style healer, of 'see HP go down, press skill, HP go up again'. This makes it good for more casual players who don't want to mess around with overly technical concepts like 'remember to wait 10s after placing Star to get max effect from it', which not everyone will be into.

What I don't like about it is that every aspect of the class is trying to follow suit. Keeping the class casual-friendly by having it's healing kit be strong, powerful, easy to access while under stressful healing pressures, and rewarding to use, that's fine, and it does that pretty well. But those of us who would like to use what we know about healing well/efficiently, and eke more out of the class, are being told we cannot go that extra mile. This is not a case of 'we cannot push our car beyond the road's speed limit', but one of 'the car manufacturer has purposely throttled the engine's output to 10mph below the speed limit of the road'.

It could be vastly improved in several ways which I've now reposted or linked to on at least 10 different occasions. Tell you what, make it 11.


Also, did you need to waste so much of your daily post allowance on making four individual threads, all of which are likely to just get the same familiar faces responding with 'yeh I play X healer, how do I feel about it? It sucks, rollback to SB', do I have to give my views on every healer in all 4 threads now? With every post I've made here I can probably form a thesis on 'the design failures of an MMO giant's Healer role: How Square Enix absolutely botched it in spectacular fashion'

Honestly, we tend to get a lot of jumbled discussions where various Healers are being thrown around, and it tends to make for less useful information since it gets jumbled. I thought having a separate one for each Job and the discussions in each being more focused on that Job could be useful. So I don't consider it a waste in this case, even if it was 1/5th of an allowance. If it leads to productive conversation (so far it has - I really enjoyed Nizzi's post in the SGE thread in particular), then I think it might be worth it.

You can reply as much or as little as you want. If you only want to post in one (or none), that's fine. If you want to post in all of them, or engage in discussions in any of them, that's fine, too. No arm twisting either way, I just thought it would be a wholesome or, at least, useful idea.

I'm not going to comment on this further other than to say...I don't think weeb means what you think weeb means.

"weeb" doesn't mean nerd - which might apply to SCH being bookish, but would also apply to SGE which is basically a stylized Greek doctor with Gundam weapons; "weeb" refers to "weabo", which is a person that is overly fanboyish about Japanese stuff, often Anime and samurais/ninjas/mecha type things, often to the point of obsession, and generally looking down on non-Japanese/Anime stuff even if it's as good or better. SGE's Gundam weapons make it more "weeb" than SCH's books, where SCH is a more general "academic and military officer" archetype.

So not only would "nerd" apply equally to SCH and SGE, "weeb" in particular only applies to one healer Job right now, which is SGE. None of the others have any particularly Anime-inspired tropes associated with them. While WHM (namely the female gear) is styled a lot like Japanese/Shinto shrine maidens, the CNJ base is more like western European druids, and the WHM more like European (Catholic) holy priests and related archetypes. AST would be akin to various mystics, fortune tellers, and Chinese influences like the Zodiac, or the Magi of Christian fame who read signs and seasons in the stars which was how they learned of the birth of Jesus as a great king/historic event.

Perhaps you mean "nerd" or "sissy" (faerie), but "weeb" doesn't mean what you seem to think it means.

And it's fine you like SGE. And it's fine others don't. And it's fine different people prize different things, objectively and subjectively. No need to insult.

I disagree on this one with you for once nizzie and the sch fan club everytime there is a sge tread is the same thing, it gets boring hearing the same repetitive oh sge = copied worst sch with the usual same examples that is just totally barely if ever irrelevant, at the end of the day all the healers are 1 2 mostly and any healer is capable of clearing any high end content even ultimates, even your last post show the common comp is whm/sge and yet those 2 gets so bashed and bullied over ast/sch so apparently the all so mighty overrated sch that is the less played healer is lol. (this is true mostly on my server of aether that is high content heavy) that the weeb pixie job is the less used job

I get people want differences and I do too but honestly how can there be any differences when to healer when it comes to 14 the way they designed their battle system? I only can say then ast/sage should have no shields/regens/mits but make them do what I would say call a burst healer , with heavy dots management or something. Anyways just like the old abuse ast use to get, there is always annoying constant repetitive hate thing on sge like old noct ast, yet hey said haters now even asking for ast to get back its dual stances? People are the reason why healers will never be fix no one ever gets satisfisied.

Same as I feel with all the healers: Pretty neutral to dislike, each varying in different categories.
- All healers can be replaced for a party comp, in all content.
- All healers spam 1 button mostly, followed by a dot every now and again.
- All healers are simple with no healing experience required
+ My own opinion: All healers are casters and lead to further homogenizing.


For whm: It's lack of mitigation for lack of DPS > there are better alternatives (which is a term that shouldn't be used but can in healer's cases.

WHM's lack of mitigation is so jarring considering that WHM in other titles is loaded with every Elemental Resistance under the sun on top of Shell and Protect.

Hell, if anything the Lily System could be expanded to include at least Protect so that there's some variety to the system instead of just a ST or AoE Heal.

As long as it wouldn't always be worth using, and wouldn't thereby largely replace Solace, I'd dig that.

For instance, if it applied 4 Stacks of Protect, each granting 5% mitigation, and lost 1 stack every 5 seconds, etc. then you'd actually want to time that, though it wouldn't be as susceptible as a barrier would be to getting chipped by autos just before the TB.

I've been playing White Mage since ARR and I gotta admit, I've been loving it more now than ever.

I'm very much a casual player and if I do savage content it's just to fk around and find out lol so please bear with me if I have bad takes.

What I love about White Mage:

-I love the visual aesthetic and fantasy of White Mage. White Mages have the best weapons out of the healers, and their spells look beautiful. I love the insanely sparkly and "magical girl" feel of the spells. I think it's fun. Lily spells are chef's kiss.

I'm extremely happy with the new aesthetics that Shadowbringers introduced. Glare and Dia have beautiful visual effects. And I love that Holy 3 is a gigantic lily.

While I understand it was part of the lore, I was never a fan of Stone. Stone always kinda looked boring if I'm being honest.

-I love the simplicity and intuitiveness of White Mage. There's no tripping over buttons or feelings of "oh sht I knew I forgot something" like when playing Astrologian.

I love all the healing options White Mage has. The kit feels so good and comfortable to play.

Dealing with huge pulls in dungeons feels much better. Still hectic, but less stressful.

Divine Benison, Aquaveil, Assize, Plenary Indulgence, and Tetragrammaton are some of my favorites. I remember when Tetragrammaton was first introduced in Heavensward. Everybody, including myself, was like "omg how did we live without this?" Such an awesome ability.

What could be improved for White Mage:

-The toolkit at level 50 feels eh. Unlock the Lily Gauge before level 50 and that'll help out. Afflatus Rapture should be available at an earlier level too.

-Cure 1 doesn't get used much at higher levels, which ends up making Freecure kinda pointless. Instead of removing Freecure, add a Freecure 2.0 that is the reverse: Cure 2 has a chance of granting a free Cure 1 (or another Cure 2). The original Freecure still has its place in lower level content.

-Bring back an AoE DoT like Aero 3. If there's one thing I do miss, it's Aero 3.

So much this. They need to go back to the elements because that provided a variety of spell effects. It would be like BLM getting their spells replaced with black sparkle orbs. What has happened to WHM is what the WoL fought to stop in Shadowbringers.

It needs more love than that I'd argue, much more. The healers are replaceable as damage is king, so they would need to be re-imagined to fit that direction, the direction they signed off on. [With a good team, healers are replaceable] [So healers need to have damage to make them not replaceable or at least not efficient to do so.]
As for the pure healer concept, the value of a pure healer is questionable if and when that pure healer never uses their high pure heals. And whm doubles down on that by not bringing any personal shield mitigation... as shields at least have some intrinsic value to survive. (Albeit still efficient to replace a healer all together).

Let us contrast WHM vs SGE, as SGE is WHM's shield healer equivalent:
WHM is no longer the self dps healer, as SGE does that much better...and when taking damage and crit variance into the picture whm shows that bad quality moreso because for a white mage to make up the damage that a SGE does, they have to fit two afflatus miseries into the two min window and have them both direct crit (and that's waiting for that window and holding onto those lillies which risks the parties health which is doable but risky), where a SGE can basically go ham from the start without playing risky and out damage the whm most of the time. They can even out-heal the whm ironically where it is needed, as they carry a ton of regens, pneuma, and ixochole. So the question then becomes what white mages bring in particular to the table. Personal answer: I have no idea.

So what is the solution?
I'd say allow for whm to be best self dps healer as shields still carry some form of value...but raise every healers' dps and dps oriented skills [and / or support skills] so that they are not replaceable in the party. Personally would rather them split the healers in a new direction away from pure vs shield (maybe personal damage vs support healers extending the skills in the healer trees to make that obvious). I thought that was the direction they would be heading in when they added Astrologian and Chain Stratagem, boy was I wrong lel.

I'm just asking for a shield applying Lily spender, with potencies purposely lower than the 'shield healer' equivalents so that WHM doesn't suddenly steal their jobs (due to lilies being damage neutral). Something like, since Succor is 320 shield, having Lily spender AOE shield tool be 200-250. Or alternatively, make it like 100 but it can stack with SCH/SGE shields. Either way, having a non-pure-heal option to spend Lilies on would help with the Misery prep issue, where we purposely overheal for the sake of raidbuffs, with this, we can still reap the effect of the Lily being spent for up to 30s after the moment it's spent, but the conversion ratio is purposely terrible because WHM is not a 'shield healer'

As my first and favourite job, I really hate to see the state of White mage.

The elements that White Mages inhereted from Conjurer were replaced with white "sparkles and tinkles" (thanks, Semirhage). And it hurts the job aesthetics.

Earth? Turned into light.
Wind? Turned into light.
So far only Water side remained (Benison and Aquaveil).

I would be okay with Stone and Aero turning into Glare and Dia respectively if, at the same time, more abilities/spells with same elements were added to fill the void. Lily this, lily that... How about we also have Quake, Flood, Tornado, Aero-freaking-III? (Lovely for them to put the latter into the first EW dungeon NPC, just to remind White mages their place)

Why Cure I and Medica (1) exists? Why are they not direct upgrades into better spells? The latter one is a worse Cure III (after its AoE radius was buffed several times). Freecure somehow survived The Great Healer Purge of all things and is still here for no reason.

Why a lot of abilites that were removed cannot remain and just upgrade to not make low level gameplay boring AF?
Why Divine Seal cannot be upgraded into Temperance at lv. 80?

Why Lilybell have so many handicaps for a 3m CD?

Why Afflatus Misery is damage neutral at best? How dare we to get rewarded for using our lilies (yeah-yeah, I know about buff windows, but would it kill them to add at least +100 potency to it? Bigger number - good)

Current savage raids are loaded with mitigation-checks and WHM still has no way to shield the group except Temperance every 2 minutes. It feels so good to drop a party member because somebody else forgot their mitigation. Where the hell are my Stoneskin, Shell, Protect? Such "raw healing powerhouse" fantasy, wow...

Now, more on the overall healing problem, the gameplay loop is boring to tears:

Glare/Holy spam in normal content is extremely mind-numbing. The incoming damage is non-threatening, abundance of tank healing digs a lot into healer agency, overgear and poor ilvl sync further kills the urgency of healing.

But hey, once in a full moon you can Esuna the doom from that one sprout who stepped into a bad stuff in new dungeon. Are you not entertained?!

Also, thanks for gutting Thin Air, SE. MP management was never an issue for White mage anyway, right?

I will leave the "What would you like changed about it?" part for later, because the post is already a full-blown rant. I really love White mage, the start of the game was great with this job, but now... other jobs just feels and looks better.
