Make Public transportation in Eorzea Free

Right now you can farm hunts and collect aetheryte tickets which remove the cost of teleports, not only are they faster but also encouraged via this system.

Now teleporting and fast travel culture will likely never go away, but perhaps throw a bone or encourage players to use the actual game transportation systems that have been built for it.

These systems used to have real ships, cutscenes and an atmosphere associated with them. They have all been removed.

I know the game is designed around fast travel now a days unfortunately but at least try to keep the facade that this is a real living world where people use transportation methods other than teleportation everywhere and encourage the use of those system by at least providing some benefits to using it.

Saying it used to have them is true. It hasn't had them since 2012 though. Before the relaunch.

Which is kind of backwards in my opinion given players have unlimited use of teleports in game pretty much. Removing the "slow" and "old school" ships that actually sailed the sky serves no other purpose than giving players the middle finger when they want immersion in the overworld. Convenience is always a tap of the teleportation menu away. Removing them was completely unnecessary.

At least we still have some of the cutscenes in the ARR airships but its clear they're too lazy to copy and paste them and make a new one for the airship routes added each expansion. MSQ quests having you use them could still just port you to the next dock so new players aren't affected.

There is a way where everyone can win here.

There was 1 real boat service in 1.0 that was EXTREMELY bare bones, with less functionality than FFXI's ships. All you could do was walk around an empty boat for 15 minutes. Sometimes there was a lightning storm. I didn't miss it at all when it was gone.

The airships in 1.0 were never real though and were just the same cutscene that exists in ARR-onwards. To make it even worse, you still had to wait for them to come into the dock because they had "plans" of making it real but never went through with them. It would be nice if you could see flying airships from the ground like you could in 1.0 though.

They have kept the façade. Those transportations options are still there. What few cutscenes exist are still there if the player hasn't disabled them in their Character Configuration options.

I don't have an objection to removing the fee since it would mostly benefit the low level players without much gil who are reliant on those things in certain areas.

Thinking that removing the cost is going to get max level players to change their travel habits is naive at best. Fast travel (which has a lore explanation attached for why we are using it while most NPCs don't) is always going to win out over saving a tiny amount of gil. Most players want time efficiency, not sightseeing. Those who want the latter will do it when they want.

When implementing/suggesting ideas, we have to be open enough to the outcomes, reactions, and the why should we even?.

The need for things, or changes must benefit, unless its a passion project by one dev.(Just like underwater Upper LA Noscea was.)

People use Vesper Bay <-> Limsa for a few gil saved at times.
(obviously less frequent now, due to the limited vesper bay tickets the msq gives.)

RP changes, or uncomfortable changes just causes attention for ire.

Which not all will understand the endgoal?

I'd love trains... I'd love to ride one and look at the scenery as we go.

When you can earn 12,000 gil for ten minutes of work running a roulette as the role in need, the 40-gil ferry is basically free already – and teleport costs aren't worth fretting over, either.

That said, my main issue with "public transport" in this game is the increasing uselessness of the chocobo network, which used to be the slower and cheaper option and went to places that didn't have teleport access, but now only runs from aetheryte locations and can be more expensive than just teleporting there.

Look at the title of your thread. You want "public" transportation to be free. How is my discussing transportation costs misinterpreting your intent when you state that's what you want.

You're expressing a desire to have more incentives to encourage players to use the various transportation systems. Making those systems free to use could easily be seen a "throwing a bone" or a method to encourage players to use those systems,

Someone else pointed out that the game never had the real ships (not something I can speak to personally since I only started playing about a month before HW launch).

I did point out that what cutscenes we have are still there, primarily the airship cutscenes but I also know that there's a cutscene for the ferry between Vesper Bay and Limsa. You are incorrect to say that they have all been removed.

Atmosphere? The atmosphere I remember experiencing was usually related to the MSQ that was prompting the travel and not the travel itself. But that's subjective and my own impression. I can't speak for how you feel about them.

I'll repeat - the façade is there. We still have the airships, ferries and porters that were there when I first started playing plus additional connections added since then. They aren't invisible just because I may be using Teleport instead.

And at the end you once again you state you wish to encourage use of those systems by providing some benefit to using them. Is the lack of a fee not a benefit when Teleport does require one (either in gil or through the consumption of an Aetheryte ticket)?.

I'm a bit confused on whether you're asserting that my response is only relevant to those who want inefficiency or if you're stating that you want the transportation system to be more inefficient for those who are using them for the sake of some sort of realism that would include such inefficency.

So I've gone from reading your original posts that seemed to be requesting to make non-Teleport transportation options free to use (which I stated I didn't have a problem with) to a response that leaves me in doubt about what your actual intent is.

What is it that you're trying to ask for? Evidently it's not a fee-free transportation system regardless of what your title says or you wouldn't be telling me I've interpreted what you were saying wrong.

Are you looking for a revamp of the transportation systems not just in cost but in other ways to make them more immersive? I wouldn't necessarily argue against it being done (depends on specifics) but I also would say I highly doubt SE would go to the effort. They've got other content to work on and a revamp of transportation would potentially pull a considerable portion of the development team away from that content, halting its development.

If I'm totally off base about what you're looking for, then give us a better description than what you put into your original post.

Agree it would be nice. It's still not something I think most players would take advantage of past the first couple of times done as a novelty. The developers have to weigh the net benefit against the time/costs to implement - would they think it's worth the effort?

Please tell me where I argued against change in my post. I said I saw no problem with making the other transportation systems free,

What I did say is that making them free is not going to encourage more players to use those systems, which seemed to be the other stated goal in the original post. It wasn't an argument against the idea. It was stating my opinion that it would not have the desired effect.

I'm being horribly niche with my wish here lol. I'm probably in a minority, but I'd love if there was an Eorzean line you could take, where you do... Ul'Dah to Gridania, to Limsa, to Ishgard, to.. dunno, Islabard? to Ala Mhigo, with each leg of the journey taking 5ish IRL minutes or whatever? I'd take that just to chill and look around, then again I'm the type that enjoys YouTube train cams. I feel it'd make the world feel much bigger though. I remember when I was new to the game, playing ARR and I saw the tracks in Black Brush station, and I got excited.

Don't get me wrong, airships and ocean ships are nice and all, but trains let you enjoy the scenery, not just fly over it or go across empty ocean, which I wouldn't really oppose either.

Oh I agree on train rides, though I'd disagree that airship rides don't have a similar value. I think they do, it's just a different perspective. When I used to fly, I'd always go for the window seat so I could look at the world spread out below with several different types of terrain sometime included in the same view - not to mention weather effects on a large scale assuming the plane itself was in clear or fair skies. I can remember watching a massive lightning storm from a couple of hundred miles away on one flight - both beautiful and somewhat scary.

But I look at how they handled Ocean fishing. Where they could have set it up with a scrolling backdrop to make it look as if the ship was continuing to move while everyone fished, instead the ship remains in a static location with only a brief cutscene for a zone transition. Considering how huge fishing is as a "hobby" in game, if that's all the effort they put into making it more immersive I don't see them putting more effort into a transportation system. I'd rather temper my expectations with the reality of what they're more likely to deliver.

I'm confused.

Are you talking about the fee, the means to travel between states or the cutscenes?

The fees are already minimal and the means to travel still exist.

Cutscenes seemed to be limited on the travel between 3 AAR city states. I'm not sure about it though because I have them disabled.

I think I get what Ath is saying. They want the public transportation to be free while the instant teleports cost gil like it already does. Paying for public transportation doesn't make since if we are already paying for instant transmission abilities.

Take the scenic route for free or pay gil for the instant port. Some people would like to use boats and airships to get around at least for RP reasons even if they established in the lore that teleporting is an in-world ability.

Let me know if I'm in the ball park or way off the mark.

But people who'd like to take the scenic route can already do that - at least I do that frequently when following the MSQ (within a certain amount of reason). Why would there need to be more incentive to do so? Thats what I dont get - if someone wants to use boats and airhsips because they prefer the immersion, they can make that choice. Why does it matter that other people make the same choice? Is the hope here that SE will see how many people are using the airships, so that they will rework them?

If you dont want to use teleports, you already can - unless you lack self discipline...

I dont think fishing on a moving boat would be possible? Having it in a static loaction is simply realistic - they could have replaced the cutscenes with the boat actually moving around between fishing spots though...

Too many aetherytes in the newer zones. That's the issue..

Do we really need 2 aetherytes less than a minute a part in some zones...

They could literally just have 1 per region and then go with the chocobo network to branch out from there

People aren't going to use alternative transportation regardless of the costs or lack thereof, simply because teleportation is the most efficient. - The only reason why people took Limsa and then ferried to Vesper Bay was that in many cases it was more efficient to do this than it was to teleport to Horizon and then go to Vesper Bay on your mount. Especially pre-flying.

For nigh on close to every single person in the game, the amount of Gil saved would not even come close to an incentive. Especially when there aren't enough open-world activities in the first place beyond the MSQ.

I'm all for a more immersive experience, but this just ain't it.

Edit: You would effectively be saving the players peanuts, and anyone who is engaging in the open world enough probably has no reason to care for those peanuts, especially if it means deviating from the usual or more efficient way - and the problem here is that for it to be the most efficient way, you would then need to resort to influencing open-world design far too much for it to actually be a good practice or even a well-created experience for that matter.

I disagree with that being the base of the problem.

Yes, they could probably remove a few aetherytes if they added more chocobo network support, but even as it currently is, there could easily be more stops than there are.

Some big ones I can think of:

Lakeland really needs a stop in Sullen, and maybe Radisca's Round and up north at the hot springs.

Il Mheg could have one at the Bookman's Shelves.

Rak'tika in the north near the Astropolis.

Kholusia really needs one in Komra with all the travelling we do to it for the alliance raid.

Thavnair could have one at the Giantsgall Grounds and maybe the Hamsa Hatchery.

Labyrinthos really needed a route between the Archeion and Meryall Agronomics, given that there were a number of sidequests you were expected to do between those locations at a point when the lift was out of service and it was a long slow walk through the caves to get between them. Another stop at the entrance plaza would have been useful as well, and maybe at Kokkol's Forge.

Garlemald could have had a second accessible subway stop in the west of the city, and some kind of unofficial travel system operating through the tunnels. (Maybe even put an aetheryte there instead, if they can't write a good reason why they can afford to run that with their other resource shortages.) Also maybe a route to the ceruleum extraction rig in the southeast.

Zone 5 could have had one at the entrance and in the northeast near the teleport to Pandaemonium. (Though I'm not sure we got chocobo stops there to begin with. Fair enough in that place, though I'm concerned it's a sign they're getting phased out in general.)

Overall, my thoughts are: bring them back as an expected mode of transport and find reasons to place stops in the various extremities of each zone. I will regularly pay to get transported across the map rather than having to steer myself.

You could, but IIRC the fish were the same as those caught in Limsa Harbor. I remember doing a lot of boat rides while fishing to trigger something like Sea Horror or to see pirates like in the FFXI version but nothing happened except a LS member tagging along and telling me their whole life story. Plus I hoarded anima and often would rather hop on a boat and make dinner than waste anima on a teleport.

FFXI had multiple different moving boat rides you could fish on, with scenery slowly moving in the background and that game is this one's predecessor and is 20 years old at this point.

Like with the airships from that game, I'm sure behind the scenes you have a static boat but you make the scenery around you move.


If you're talking about realistic like in the real world, people fish off moving boats all the time.

FFXI Did it really well. Because while you would see the scenery. For example the airship from bastok to jeuno would fly over the Highlands and you could see the crags.

At that exact moment a player in the Highlands could look up into the sky and see the airship flying over head.. it was all interconnected and synchronised. One of the reasons vanadiel blows eorzea away honestly...

more "immersion" would be nice and never a bad thing

however, at the end of the day, how many would actually USE it? is it worth diverting Development resources for something a very small percentage would ever use? we already know that many complain about tanks if they dont pull the entire dungeon at the start because of the "extra time" of dealing with things group by group. we also know about the many who never leave Limsa

the problem isnt the system, its that people have to rush everywhere, and that has become a perceived way to play any game. you will never change people, and that is why in the end, I do not think this would be worth the time invested to expand on what is there now.

I mean, Sea of Clouds, Ays Lla, and Western Highlands are all obnoxious to get around for that reason. I feel like there's a happy medium. Mostly the only people it affects are Hunters, though, I guess...

They're basically public transportation that make routes, and not a lot of them (the 3 base city-states, + Ishgard, + Gold Saucer, + Kugane, + Radz-at-han), they don't even all connect (e.g. you can't go from Radz to Gold Saucer), and don't even have service to all major capitals; Old Sharl, Ala Mhigo, Doma, and Garlemald don't have them, and obviously Cyrstarium and Eulmore have their own network (if you did the Custom Delivery quests) but aren't connected to the ones on the Source. After the first three, they never even bothered making boarding/take-off/landing/disembarking cutscenes, it's just direct teleports, even if you're taking off or landing from one of the original three city-states.

Though I feel most people would turn them off, if they actually did just make brief cutscenes and actually have them connect to all the capitals, people might use them a smidge more...though emphasis on the smidge.

Regardless, I do think waving the fee for using them wouldn't be bad in any way.

Same for the ferry boats, though arguably it makes MORE RP/lore sense for them to charge a fee since they aren't "public transportation" with set routes and times, you're actually asking a captain to make a special trip for you, personally.

Airships aren't public transportation, though. Most of the airship routes we have access to are operated by Highwind Skyways and regulated by the Eorzean Alliance. Only those granted an airship pass can use them (that's stated when we're given our own pass early in the MSQ) and flights are heavily curtailed because of Garlean forces in and around Eorzean.

Ferry boats do operate with set routes, and likely set times depending on passenger frequency. The only ferry in the game that I can think of off the top of my head that would be different is the one that runs between the Silver Bazaar and Crystal Cove (how many players realize that one even exists?).

While fees may not be waived for the common folk, it would be in the best interests of the city states to subsidize them for adventurers hired out of the Adventurer's Guild to take care of dangers in the surrounding territories. ("Sorry those bandits were killing the villagers an extra 2 weeks but I couldn't afford the ferry fee and had to go the long way.") And of course we would have Lord Lolorito to thank for the Limsa/Kugane passage. Leaving that one free would make sense as part of his ongoing acts of contrition.

I still don't think that making them free would encourage use of them more than they are already getting used. But I do think making their use free to new characters who haven't had a chance to accumulate gil yet would be a good thing. It's not a big issue if older characters would likewise benefit.

What I did say is that making them free is not going to encourage more players to use those systems, which seemed to be the other stated goal in the original post. It wasn't an argument against the idea. It was stating my opinion that it would not have the desired effect.

No. Every transport should be expensive just like in real life. They make housing as tedious as in real life so why not make public transport expensive?

Remove instant teleports, reduce mount speeds by 95%.

Add a new gatherer class, Oil Driller. They'll be selling gasoline in the marketboard. Destroy Ala Mhigo again by making them the #1 source for oils. People will be flocking to their region to dig oils and turn what's already a desert into an even more desertlike desert.

Add a new limited job, Driver. Skills and damage based on distance travelled in vehicle (with another player, who pays top gil for the experience). Weapon: motorcycle or car with 150-350% walking speed. During battle just run over the enemies and pop a wheelie to look trendy.

Add a new menu, Driver Finder. Find Drivers to take you wherever you want in Eorza or have them deliver housing items to you when you are too busy decorating your house. Also hireable for other purposes. You need someone to go to "venues" so you dont look like a loser? hire a driver, nobody knows its a Driver.

After reading this whole thread, I agree with the OP.

The small amount of fees charged for ferries and airships are negligible for a level 90 player who won't use them anyway, but can actually make a difference for the levels that are using them, below level 40-50 for the most part.

The workaround for Vesper Bay tickets is nice, but only gets you to Waking Sands, not to any of the other places.

Considering hunts don't even unlock until you're in your level 40s, the other "free" option for teleports aren't available either.

Indeed, the one argument that does seem to make sense here is that some people feel it's not worth the development time which could potentially be true. However I am of the opinion that throwing money at only the critical components of a game while letting the details decay into nothing doesn't actually make for the best experience.

Games, especially MMOs have to be comprehensive about this. When you only chuck money at the critical parts and cut back on the rest it feels like things are missing.

A perfect example of this is CBUIII's FFXVI title, same unit, same issue. I liked 16 but they pumped all their budget into the MSQ and combat. The world and other RPG systems languished and were irrelevant. While it is still a good game, all these missing chunks that add to a vibrant, living feeling to the world are missing and so the game doesn't feel complete. This is something I don't mind in single player titles I beat and don't plan to return to since out of sight, out of mind, but in a live service with new content coming out every year it does matter when the world is just sitting there with missing details and no use.

Another egregious example of this is northern Thanalan. Why that zone hasn't been re-skinned is a mystery given that we've already built a housing ward in Ishgard in events that occurred way after that place blew up 10 years ago. We have other re-skinned areas that have shown progress.

Its clear trains can also exist given there are actual railroad tracks in the game, it could be added. Having these things coming and going with NPCs also hopping on board would benefit players who teleport as well, it would just liven up the cities in a way that makes them more bustling and welcoming to new players.

Right now I feel like if I push the scenery too hard the entire cardboard set is going to come down and the stage lights are going to show from how fake and static things feel.

Riding as a mount passenger, exasperated over having to sit in weekend Limsan traffic while I silently roll my eyes at my Roegadyn cabby that's telling me stories about his life troubles and how many kids he has to feed.

These systems used to have real ships, cutscenes and an atmosphere associated with them. They have all been removed.

I know the game is designed around fast travel now a days unfortunately but at least try to keep the facade that this is a real living world where people use transportation methods other than teleportation everywhere and encourage the use of those system by at least providing some benefits to using it.

One of the my biggest gripes with the game tbh, and a big factor as to why the world feels so disconnected (at least to me). Teleporting is just so much more convenient, but it means everywhere feels like it's own "hub" instead of part of an interconnected world. Playing FFXI, it felt great to board a ship and fight monsters as it crossed the sea to wherever it was going. Maybe the sailing process doesn't need to take as long, but the idea of physically travelling like that was so much fun. I wish teleporting was more expensive, with airships/ships being free/much cheaper in comparison.

100% and yes short travel times would be fine. They can take 5 mins for all I care but I do want the world to be more cohesive than what we have now and for there to be rewarding reasons to take the scenic routes.

Really, anything to promote exploration in the game would be appreciated. I love the game to death, but I miss when MMOs incentivized going out into the world and exploring.
