I never had the opportunity to play 1.0 but wow. Taste is subjective, so take my opinion for what it is: an opinion.
How do things look THIS much worse all these years later? Everything is so washed out and faded. Textures have so much less detail. The areas seem so much less open and more linear even by other theme park MMO standards. I don't know if 1.0 was on console as well but my immediate suspicion is to wonder of the downgrade was so this game could run on the PS3. -

I've watched videos of Yoshi-P saying 1.0 graphics were so highly defined that it drained a lot of resources just to keep the world running. He said he downgraded the graphics significantly to make sure the game would run without significant lag, so the faded-out / downgraded look was definitely intentional.

Yeah the max that would load player wise for 1.0 was around 40 players and I believe that included the NPCs. I remember once the LS I was in made a circle in Ul'dah around the area next to where the stairs to the Aetheryte is and stood circle facing each other. We literally couldn't see the player across from us in the circle (it was probably about 10 of us) and the circle wasn't even that big.
There were some gorgeous views from it as well but there also were a lot of copy and pasted areas as well. All in all I do prefer the 2.0 and later graphics to the over too pretty and hardware abusive 1.0. -

If you have an extremely detailed plant pot beside a pixelated tree it doesn't look very good. -

Some stuff looks better now, some stuff better then ... meme at this point but those 1.0 walk and run animations were pretty sweet. The animation lock not so much lol.
Wish when they added animation blending / canceling that it was to facilitate personal high quality animations (though I can imagine it melting most PCs if everyone had it). Certainly the game runs way better on more machines now though, so that's a win.
I'm hoping the future graphics update will be an opportunity to fine tune some aspects without losing much performance for the general audience and then at the same time adding a few enthusiast settings.

Wasn't shown or discussed, afaik, but I would love to see things like weather, water, and other additional concepts like environmental / spell shaders or physics discussed. Weather effects are not bad, but some recent games or crazy older games, have made me go 'hot damn that weather is fine'.. and with such a diverse weather setting in this game that could be pretty fun. Although not graphics I'd love to see a movement / collision update, as we're seeing WoW do such in Dragonflight (and already had fairly smooth movement systems), and I've been goofing off with GW2 per recommendation and have been extremely impressed with their mount movement system (which I had recommended SE do before GW2 had.. and saw videos of GW2 and thought it was cool, but having played it- damn it's really cool to feel so fluid). -

I may be going crazy but wasn't there stories circulating during 1.0 where high end PCs were basically burning out and dying due to how hard it was on them? I don't know how true that was but I also remember once my friend's screen going green when some of us were screwing around casting holy and Flare at one time. (Though his pc wasn't the greatest I think.)

If you were zoomed in all the way and had people have a spam Holy Party, it would stutter and lag like it does now - and kick some people off the game. In the albeit short time I played I'd never heard of anyone blue screening/shutting down if their computer was properly set up. 1.0's specs was extremely demanding for PC and even people with a decent computer had difficulty running it. And while zones were big and open, there was nothing in them and there were a ton of copy and pasted assets. The Black Shroud was basically a copy and pasted maze of repeating pathways.
Downgrading the graphics to allow the game to run on PS3 did have a bit to do it with, but also to allow people with older PCs to play the game as well. One of the reasons why WoW was so successful was because anyone could play that without having a super PC, and the FF14 team wanted to replicate that. -

It seems to boil down to lighting changes due to the different engine, which should get an overhaul in 7.0, and ARR cities being separated for performance reasons, I think at this point in time stitching the ARR cities (+Ishgard) back together wouldn't be much different in performance than Crystarium or Sharlayan, but I doubt they'll do it.

I seem to be the crazy one, cause to me 1.0 graphcis look much worse and way too dark. And current graphics are already way too dark (apart from white-blinding places) and even with my monitor's brightness super high I can barely see anything without shaders.

There was a lot of empty and copy-pasting in 1.0 but one thing I still prefer about the maps is the sense of scale. The sense of scale and distance was perfect.

As I said earlier in the thread, my salt over the 1.x Black Shroud is dead and buried... but it is a very, very shallow grave.
However, setting aside the memory of my blind, seething rage towards whatever sadistic map designer inflicted that torment on us... I will absolutely grant that the Shroud was, in many ways, a good take on the "dark and forbidding forest" of folklore; traveling through it was sometimes terrifying, as you could easily get lost. And then things would eat you. And whatever else you want to say about the zone, the music was one of my favorite pieces of the original soundtrack. (For those who didn't play 1.x, the 1.x Black Shroud zone music still exists in game; it's now the music for Slitherbough in the Rak'tika Greatwood.)

Once we had flight in ARR zones, I popped up over the Footfalls and had to just hover for a while remembering running around up there back in the day. I do miss the open spaces of 1.0 but not how intensive it was to run, especially with how bad it was in cities. I found the old subdued lighting in Ul'dah quite comforting actually but then again cool shady rooms in a city laying in the middle of a desert made sense to me but I won't argue that it was a mess to see at the best of times lol

Also because of the large amount of items the game simply has no method of allowing you to stash them all unlike in 1.0 version where you were able to stash every item in the game and yes, I am still pissed that the team got rid of letting players buy items off of other players anywhere since it not only made my shopping alot easier but it also gave me a reason to socialize with other players too. I even use to have a list of players I knew on my server that always sold certain items I needed and would seek them out in the world to buy from them directly.Quote:

The game literally ran like hot garbage. I had a top tier PC when 1.0 came out and the game chugged HARD. I would get a crazy amount stutters and random FPS drops out of nowhere. Maintaining 60FPS was nearly impossible and the menus were incredibly slow/clunky.Quote:
