Thank you SE for addressing Samurai's burst window issues.

Looking past the initial shock, I've come to the conclusion that Samurai's guaranteed crits, disregarding the as of yet unknown potency changes, are a very healthy change not only to the job but to the party buff meta as a whole. I have multiple reasons that I'll go over in excrutiating length, starting off with simply how it will feel while playing.

As many of you reading are keely aware, Samurai is a job that has a few facets to its "identity". One of them is the big single skill numbers that it churns out regularly. For a lot of players, seeing a massive number pop up on the enemy is satisfying. Ever since Stormblood we've seen Samurai gushing over how high they can hit with Midare and now Namikiri. What's not so fun however, is seeing those big numbers fail to be BIG, because you didn't land a crit or direct crit. I've played with many people who've complained about their awful RNG completely screwing them over. From a simple emotional standpoint I believe players will find these crits very satisfying, especially with the potency adjustments to offset the loss of Kaiten.

Ensured crits don't just improve the "feel" of using these skills, they also smooth out the damage over the long course of a boss fight, particularly in Savage and Ultimate settings. With the harder focus on 2 minute windows we've been seeing from the development team, it's more important than ever to have good luck during these burst windows. The modifiers for crits, direct hits, and especially direct crits scale enormously, especially so while under the effect of raid buffs. I believe the high scaling in general should be addressed by the balance team but that is another post altogether. Warrior has proven the stabilizing effect of guaranteed crits, with the much lower damage variance compared to all other jobs including other tanks. Performing well due to skill is satisfying. Not performing well due to poor luck is frustrating. Going forward, balancing these two concepts will go a long way, and this change is a step in the right direction.

On a very different note, Samurai's new gauranteed crits will also serve a role in stopping a "stack buffs on the strong guy" meta. I used to play a game called Maple Story where this was a very pervasive problem. While it isn't present to the same degree as that game, I see it here with Samurai. Though Black Mage's personal damage is just as high it is more spread out, allowing them to contribute roughly equally in burst windows. Samurai however concentrates a lot of its damage in burst windows. Other jobs gain a disproportionate amount of damage with their buffs if a Samurai is in the party, compared to for example a Reaper. rDPS is misleading in this sense. While it does reflect the damage a Samurai does, it does not show the damage their party gained from the higher personal damage. I ran some numbers out of curiousity and I'll share them in the next post

Comparing rDPS gained from Reaper vs Samurai for varying jobs. Top FFLogs parse for each job was used for consistancy in skill/performance.

Bard - SAM: 500.1 | RPR: 310.9

Monk - SAM: 176.5 | RPR: 117.6

The rDPS given to a party of Tank/Tank/(SAM or RPR)/NIN/BLM/DNC/SCH/AST:
Samurai contributes 2449.5 to their party's raid buffs with an nDPS of 9861.1, totaling 12310.6 party damage contribution.
Reaper contributes 1957.8 to their party's raid buffs with an nDPS of 9241.1 and 424.7 from Arcane Circle, totaling 11623.6 party damage contribution.

An equally skilled Samurai brings up to 687 more dps to their party than an equivalant Reaper. By gauranteeing crits on samurai's biggest moves, it ensures at least the crit buffs aren't being sandbagged if a job other than Samurai is taken. Ideally Samurai's potencies will be adjusted to be 500 less dps than they are now but uncentralizing the need to have them in a party for scholar, dancer, and bard will go a long way towards ensuring all jobs remain competitive with one another.


I realize how long this post is and I apoligize, but I wanted to apply adequete reason and logic to combat the fearmongering I see going on right now. I implore anyone concerned over these changes to consider everything I've typed. I believe in time it will be seen as positive when the dust settles.

Great thread, wholeheartedly agree with everything. So many people only look at rDPS due to it being the default metric and ignore the giant elephant pad in the room. Samurai has been the dominant meta job for years already to the point where 100% of all speed runs feature one and it's basically a lock in any optimized setting with the remaining jobs in its role competing for the privilege of buffing it. Speed runs are essentially just samurai crit fishing and repeating and it's incredibly stale. This is also a balancing nightmare as every single job except 1 of each role offers what amounts to essentially the same exact thing making it so jobs like samurai are essentially a lock and whatever job has the weaker raid buff is vastly underperforming(reaper). It also makes it much harder to balance machinist as both bard and dancer have the strongest/most raid buffs which directly benefit from samurai's ridiculous damage pad, so machinist is now vastly underperforming.

I'm going to have to dispute this on the basis that SAM requires far more skill to play at a high level than RPR does. If both the SAM and the RPR are 'equally skilled' then both of them are eating glue and forcing crayons up their nose, but only one of them is doing any meaningful damage. That is to say that RPR is braindead easy to play which simply means that SAM has to work harder for it... And if we're putting the work in, why not be rewarded with the higher numbers?
As far as I'm concerned - and I'm not alone in this based on the fact that 12 out of 20 threads on the first page are "Don't remove Kaiten!" threads - Square can keep their guaranteed crits and stick them where the sun doesn't shine. While they're at it, they could do with nerfing Reaper a bit so that I can't do nearly as much DPS as a SAM by slamming my face against the keyboard and hoping for the best.

Samurai was a sticker collecting job to begin with and now its only minor resource management is being removed so this is a moot point anyway as it's now also a paste eating job. This isn't a fighting game and no job is difficult anyway. I hope you enjoy your gimped job lol, you definitely deserve it.

It causes bard and dancer to lose roughly 200 dps each, but they compete with Machinist, not all dps. Bringing all phys ranged in line is fantastic and not repeating the problem of Stormblood piercing debuff is even better. I'm glad they've learned from their mistakes.

Gatekeeping in the hardcore scene will always be a thing regardless of the game and the classes. People were locking SMNs out of raids early in the expansion because the new summon animations were too big, which is petty as hell but it still happened.
Conversely though, there's plenty of evidence to the contrary with SAMs getting arbitarily locked out of high level content because auto-crits mean less synergy with DRGs, BRDs and SCHs because who needs crit chance when you're getting 100% chance anyway? The more auto-crits they put in, the more they're really just implementing secret nerfs to things like Battle Litany or Chain Stratagem. As far as I'm aware - and I could be wrong, so feel free to correct me - FFXIV doesn't turn extra crit chance into extra damage, so whether it's 100% or 150%, you're still going to be getting the same damage on the attack regardless. And if nothing else, removing Kaiten for the sake of just throwing on auto-crits just feels bad.

As far as the difficulty goes, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I found RPR mindnumbing to play and all I really need to do is hit whatever button is flashing to do the big numbers.

I mean no offense but you haven't even cleared savage yet and have no performance uploads of reaper, so... You'd think by the way you talk down about reaper you'd be doing rank 1 DPS since it's so easy and takes no skill, right?

Good to see that the guy rocking a 'Warrior level 79' tag as their main class thinks they have any authority on any of this, but hey because I don't use 3rd party software or upload all my parses that must mean I'm trash. Perfectly good logic there. Need I remind you that literally everyone who has uploaded their performance is currently in breach of the game's ToS?
It's also worth noting that I have no plans to clear Savage any time soon because a) I don't currently have a static; and b) I have no desire to. But by all means continue to make assumptions and throw shade instead of actually making anything resembling a valid point.

I didn't say you were trash, but for someone insulting another job so much you'd think you'd have the numbers to back it up, I'm not doing that. This also isn't my main. And as far as numbers go SAM has less variance in DPS than BLM, DRG and NIN so that should mean objectively all of them are more difficult and SAM should get its numbers reduced to accurately reflect the ease of use of the job especially after 6.1 when its crit variance is also being reduced. So many biased SAM mains fall back on this arbitrary difficulty argument when presented with the facts SAM is a centralizing overpowered job that needed adjustments for years already.

Samurai and its role as selfish dps are still intact. I highly doubt that will change. Their higher personal damage is easily enough to offset the loss, with quick napkin math placing them roughly equal to other melee as an rDPS contributor. They have an absolutely crazy burst window which seems to be preserved, with the mention of potencies being changed to balance out the loss of Kaiten. The crit stat does raises crit damage as well. In the past Samurai simply didn't have enough damage to offset its lack of raid buff synergy, whereas it has plenty to spare now. I understand the worry but I don't think this patch will be the nightmare some fear it to be

If it wasn't obvious, my original post was incredibly tongue-in-cheek but if you want to take the insult for RPR then be my guest. It's a logical fallacy to assume that just because I find something easy and/or boring I must be incredible at it and the argument doesn't hold water. I find fishing boring and pretty easy both in-game and in real life, and yet I'm not getting my face in the title sequence of The Deadliest Catch. Driving is also a pretty easy and mostly monotonous task and yet I'm not an F1 driver. It's far more likely that because I find the job boring and overly simple that I'm not going to use it in any content, let alone savage if and when I finally get around to it - and as it turns out, that's the truth. I levelled the RPR, I played around with it for a bit at level 90 and then I dropped it for something I find more engaging and more fun. I like classes that actually have a little bit of management to them and feel like they require more than a single braincell to play decently well. I don't feel like RPR is one of those jobs and I feel like SAM is going to be following the same course as soon as Kaiten goes, because as you said Kenki's only use from now on will be dumping into Shinten and at that point they might as well just slap a couple of charges on it like it's Plunge/Rough Divide/Whatever else, remove Kenki entirely and call it a day.

My main issue isn't getting locked out of content even though I made that point, my main issue is reduced complexity at the expense of feel and the need to actually think about things as you play. Kenki management and keeping 20/40 there for Kaitens and not blowing your wad on Shinten spam is something I find satisfying and gratifying about the class. I felt the same when Greased Lightning got rolled into being a passive back in... 5.4 (?) and I had many a rant about BLM's proposed loss of Enochian when the 6.0 changes were announced. I find the whole change totally unnecessary and I'm left asking "Who is this actually for?" when 99% of SAM mains are raging about this. It's certainly not to deal with ability bloat, it's certainly not to address a problem that SAMs have been complaining about...

My very image of SAM is kaiten. It is unique to samurai job and it rewards you by boosting your iai jutsu.
Why removing that for the sake of 1 less button to press simplicity? My problem was never about how much resource it cost or how much it actually affects the iai jutsu itself, it was this is what samurai is for me, what makes iai jutsu "iai jutsu". Sometimes I even delay iai jutsu to gather kenki to use kaiten, and it feels suck to use without it, and now I'll feel it 100% of the time knowing I can't and will not able to make my iai jutsu deals more damage than it usually do.

If you ask me, even if you hide kaiten behind "Third Eye" and have it turned into only 1 stack of kaiten when popped, I would still be happy with it, rather it being completely removed.

Based on the logic of this post, great, now can we also fix the burst window issues of the other 18 jobs in this game?

SO... is what you are saying is we are getting a stupid change to samurai, because of speed runs that maybe 2% of games population participates in?
I remember another game that made a lot of decisions based off 2% of the player base... Perhaps we will be as great as that game is right now.

And to the OP, 90% of the player base does not care about this. The stacking buffs on the strong guy meta will always exist, if its not samurai than it's reaper, if it's not reaper than its blm, if its not blm than it's monk.

Who cares except speed runners or parsers? If I am not clearing because of a difference of 687 dps theres a bigger problem with my group.

Always felt sam's niche was destroying raid buffs. Even in stormblood, when they had the least amount of burst.
Even though Sam is a selfish dps it didn't feel that way because doing the most raid dps is ignoring buffs and free styling. Meanwhile playing into your party buffs felt great cause not only you are doing more dps and you are helping your teams parse. It's one of the main reasons I love Sam.
To me it separated a good Sam from a great Sam.

The numbers have already been run by people smarter than me while I was sleeping. The changes come out to a 3 dps loss. Yes you read that correctly. Samurai got 20 potency on its heavily used skills with higanbana going from 600 total potency to 900. This applies to everyone, not just speedrunners. The hard data is out and it's time to dry the crocodile tears.

We can spend the 20 kenki normally spent on Kaiten for Higanbana on 80% of a Shinten instead. Higanbana's upfront damage was essentially nerfed by 100 potency even if the DoT stays the same, but we get 200 potency worth of Kenki for Shinten. So it's like a 100 potency buff. Woohoo!

I wouldn't be surprised if number crunching total potency over a fight comes out even after these changes, but strongly question the claim that this is not a nerf once raid buffs are factored in. A significant amount of damage was removed from our burst window and shifted into the regular combos. New nerfed crit Midare plus 20 Kenki for Shinten is a slight (2%) buff over old Midare plus Kaiten, but Kaeshi and the Ogi+Kaeshi combo are straight and significant nerfs. There's also the major anti-synergy with crit buffs to consider.

It feels weird how we just have what 100+ kenki every min just free now to spam shinten. I feel like its a nerf still cause sam used to destroy raid buffs now it just kind of stand there and eats crit buffs.

First they said we were using Shinten too much in SB and wanted to focus more on Iaijutsu in ShB. Now, here in EW, they're forcing us to use Shinten more, almost exclusively so, by taking away what little choice we had. Wtf is going on here Squeenix? SAM is a buff taker. It makes good use of them. That is literally what the job is supposed to do. Y r u generalising speedruns like everyone and their mother r doing them? 99.9% of the population is nowhere near skilled enough, let alone giving enough of a damn about raids to clear them as fast as possible. Now nobody, NOBODY will want a SAM in speed runs. I suppose that is a good change in ur eyes? Going from loved to universally shunned?

More like bad post, you contradict yourself so many times it made my head spin. The SAM changes to crit don't impact anyone outside of the 0.01% as you just stated yourself. People also think that SAM's ridiculous damage pad only impacted the top of the top players when this simply isn't true at all, at every level SAM does way more damage and all you have to do is hit your CDs when they come up lol. The current design of jobs in this game is completely flawed anyway. Right now there's only one job that 'makes good use of raid buffs' at least to the extent that SAM does, making it the most centralizing job in the entire game, while most other jobs are glorified supports with the same copy paste raid buff that gets their damage handicapped in order to pad the job that does BY FAR the most DPS and basically compete amongst each other for the privilege of buffing the SAM. I don't see how one job being the best in every single comp in every single fight in every single circumstance is balanced at all.

The solution to this problem should not, under any circumstance, be to create anti-synergies. Framing this as an overall rDPS issue is pointless. The bar is already so low, especially now with gear, to meet the minimum check to clear the tier. The variance of SAM up until now was not going to be the deciding factor in killing a boss. While it is commendable that they want to address that variance, and don't get me wrong it did need to be looked at, they've taken a pretty narrow-minded approach to it and created synergistic issues. Yes, they hit the mark really close for SAM's personal damage with these changes, but since you know those numbers you must also be aware that these changes amount to a DPS loss in crit buff groups compared to now. So if your angle is going to be that SAM somehow "makes up" for the loss in damage, it unfortunately does not. And now it creates an environment where other jobs are going to have their rDPS contributions suffer for it.

and raid buffed DPS went down by 3%, u forgot to mention that as that is actually the DPS that matters

how exactly is SAM burst fixed anyway? ur burst is doing way, WAY less than pre patch? all this does is negatively affect buffers, as well as anyone who enjoyed pre patch SAM

SAM will feel lousy to play w/o kaiten, and even lousier with a wet noodle burst window

dont be silly, higanbana did not get buffed, kaiten got baked into it since that ability (thankfully) didnt get the auto crit treatment and kaiten is gone now

i cant believe u r okay with this, all they did was shuffle numbers around in order to create a more boring job, not one part of which anyone asked for!

A boring class whose 2 min cooldowns CONTRADICTS with 2 min cooldowns of 4 other jobs while SE heavy pushes 2 min cooldown meta in endwalker....

It's not about the numbers. It's about the job's identity. The number shuffling is not what bothers people. It's the actual gutting of the class that bothers people. Don't generalize the issue of the SAM changes for damage to trivialize the actual problem of identity loss that people have with this change.

Kenki is the new Faerie Gauge and I hate it.
I don't care about the dps. I only care about numbers as much as they encourage or influence how I play.
And Kaiten's removal influences how I will play, by putting Kenki off screen lol.
