Hello. I recently returned to the game and I'm being told WHM is a garbage class getting the lowest DPS and healing in the new savages. I'm told any other healer class is better - can anyone shed light on this?
I use to really love WHM but I've been leveling other healers, only because I've been warned WHM is not worth the effort. Is it true? PS, the character listed on the forum is not my main. :)

It's not the worst but I guess by proxy it is? Unlike the SCH vs SGE debacle, WHM has the worst MP recovery (making deaths very punishing).
It's healing is low in raiding due to having less oGCDs than all the healers. And Misery being a DPS loss making using Lilies punishing.
On top of that, it's personal dps is now overshadowed by SGE.
It's the worst but that's because the other healers are doing better than expected. People thought SCH would be DoA but because of the cast time fixes for all healers and Expedient being extremely helpful, it's very much viable.
I wasn't say that WHM is in a terrible place, just that it needs some changes to make it competitive again. Basically they didn't change anything meaningful and now it's flaws are showing. -

At the moment, I don't really feel that WHM has any clear advantage over the other healers in any category. By this, I don't just mean that in each key area, one of the healers is better than only this, but that 2-3 of the healers are better than WHM at any given thing whether that be DPS contribution, MP economy, mobility, utility, or even HPS. The only real advantage that it has is that it's easier to use at face value, but if you understand how to manage your tools as a SCH, SGE, or AST, they will outperform WHM fairly noticeably. AST for example, outside of just being a busier job, offers everything WHM offers and more, and often what tools it has are flat out better than WHM's alternatives.
Naturally, this really only matters for Savage. Some players may continue to play it because it's comfortable and they have more control which makes sense, but I really feel that the job is starved of some kind of identity of its own, and I don't think being a less busy healer is enough. WHM players deserve to have something that they hold a clear advantage in. Even when it was MP economy in ShB, that at least gave it a clear value during prog.
We'll have to see if they end up giving WHM some love. -

Whm was the worst healer at the end of shb, now it's somehow worse. whm has less healing and less combined healer dps whenever they actually need to heal. Whm have less damage reduction and less range. Whm has the worst mp economy and death recovery. Pretty much everything whm got in endwalker is a worse version of ast. overall whm is the worse healer.

It depends on what you are doing. I think WHM is still solid in dungeons, especially lower level 45+ (holy) content where it feels like king, albeit in higher level I think sage feels better as you have an abundance of oGCDs so the stun is less valuable. In higher end raiding, while I know they can clear everything, as a Sage I absolutely hate having a whm in my PF raids as they bring absolutely nothing to the table over the other 3. Having a WHM almost insures I will be stuck doing more healing (50-90% more then the whm) while getting no negligible DPS increase over another healer. Meanwhile an astro has so much utility, a scholar has the fairy + zoom, and if I am playing a scholar I would rather have a sage over a whm as even not taking shield GCDs into account the sage will outheal the WHM, do more DPS, and provide tons of mitigation.

In situations demanding heavy healing, the WHM is still the king. Big pull, and the tank is not using cooldowns correctly? Just heal through it, np. As SGE, you will struggle much more there (been there, done that).
Unfortunatly though, in most "normal" situations, heavy healing is not needed. And then you start to look at the bonuses other healers bring to the party (WHM doesn't have any really), or the obvious mp/cast time differences between WHM and the other "pure healer" AST.
I would still say WHM is a perfectly fine healer (and it is still my main), it only seems weaker if you compare it to other healers. -

WHM is my favorite healer, mostly because I think it has the best aesthetics. In term of gameplay, WHM is the clunkiest, messiest, and weakest healer. Comparing to other healers:
- oGCDs are fewer, weaker, inflexible, and with longer cooldowns
- GCD heals cost more MP, take longer to cast, despite having similar potency
- The lily system feels like an afterthought.
- Weakest MP economy
- Worst mobility in the game
- The entire skill set feels so incoherent, almost as if they created each skill separately without putting a single thought into how these skills would work in tandem
If you read the JP forum, you will see stories about WHM being banned from P3S or P4S popping up a lot. As much as I love WHM and will continue playing it, you'll probably need to play a different healer for high-end contents for now. -

WHM was okay during ShB because the devs decided to fix their job mechanic: lilies. But that's all. They even took Aero 3 away.
Clearly, they want WHM to be starter healer that anyone can play no matter how ill-equiped you were and fits into that gross healbot stereotype.
Like TyTaurus said, WHM has no niche. Not even prog since dying is punishing with their horrible MP economy. For a healer that's supposed to GCD heal, it has the most expensive healing spells.
It's like the devs saw the positive response ShB WHM got and ran with it even though all they did was give him a meaningful gimmick that reflects the same thing it's normal kit does–direct heals. I get that WHM may not need super complexity like AST but on AST, you actually have things to do and get rewarded for doing them.
AST's MP recovery makes sense because it's encouraging you to draw cards and then rewarding with even more MP with Astrodyne for playing the cards.
SCH has Aetherflow on a 45s CD and has Energy Drain to drop unused stacks before the next refresh, encouraging you to keep Aetherflow on CD.
SGE gets MP for just using their oGCDs, encouraging you to use them often and not sit on them.
These are all healthy habits a healing job should teach the player. And for a starter, training wheels healer WHM, doesn't encourage that at all.
Thin Air should be used for the expensive healing spells like Cure 3, Medica 2, Raise hence why there's two charges. But often times, I just see new WHM players not touch it at all or use it after death only to realize that it only works on the next spell. On top of that, Assize is the only thing that gives you back MP for using it and you should use Assize on CD as its a 45s CD, holding it too long or strictly for healing actively gimps your MP recovery.
WHM should be the job that instills good healer habits but it does the opposite: over-reliance on GCD healing, spells being so similar that they don't have a microcosm of even having different ways of healing. Hence why new WHM players get overwhelmed playing any other healer. -

I've noticed that MP is indeed worse than it was in Shadowbringers. Back then WHM had essentially infinite mp if you played right. Now, not so much. It's nowhere near as bad as it was in Heavensward though.
Can WHM do all content in the game? Yes. It has some issues, no doubt but it still works fine overall. -

Adding to that raw healing potency alone, SGE recovers Addersgall every 20s and out of combat, so you'll start every pull with at least 2 Addersgall, WHM recovers Lilies every 30s and only in combat.
SGE gets 21% MP back through Addersgall heals alone, WHM gets roughly 11% from Assize and TA.
WHM's strongest GCD is 800 potency for 1k MP, SGE's strongest GCD heal is 840 for 900 MP, instant and gives a slight damage return.
SGE can also freely weave and move while aoeing, WHM has to clip and is less mobile.
WHM has Holy stuns but far less mitigation overall.
SGE can shield or aoe on the run, WHM can use Regen/ Solace but not aoe.
All in all, in a poor group SGE has far better tools and reliable dps.
In a decent to good group, being able to dump Lilies on the run for instant Misery every pull puts WHM ahead in dps but it requires a tank that mitigates properly.
When it comes to healing, SGE is ahead. Period.
And it doesn't matter if something "feels" weak or powerful, numbers don't lie.
SGE has a lot more tools than WHM has and is ahead in free healing at every level range, both for ST and aoe healing, even when partly ignoring some of their mechanics/ cooldowns and has better MP economy.
If you struggled so hard on SGE, you probably made some mistakes. Which is fine, but it's not the SGE toolkit that's lacking. -

Thanks for all the replies. I use to be in a raid group that cleared new savages quickly after release. I started after ARR launched. My guild migrated from another game to FFXIV once we realized we preferred it, but life got tough for awhile and I retired. Now that life has settled and I'm comfortable I've decided to return.
I'm flexible and I'll play whatever healer class is optimal for a team. I don't know if I'll commit to a raid group but I do want to raid again in savage. -

WHM it is fine till you do savage, P1S and P2S is fine for WHM , however from P3S it is a different story. If you really want to do savage on P4S WHM is absolutely shafted ,you need to be the top 5% WHM on skill level to clear P4S, I would say top 20% 25% of SCH or AST would clear. yes Savage is doable with WHM but it is try boxing with one hand tied behind your back.Quote:

And for the first few days i didnt even have druochole on my hotbar because i've missed it when assigning it. Eukrasian Diagnosis for example is a 300 potency heal with a 540 potency barrier. Granted these are level 85 values and i dont remember how strong the barrier is before that but its not far behind. Youre effectively healing 840 potency which is far stronger (and ironically cheaper) than a cure II. This is on top of the tank being healed by your DPS'ing so it should be dying slower than on WHM or AST unless ofc you sacrafice a GCD on regen/apected benefic. And afterwards doing wall to wall with real players wasnt an issue either.Quote:

It's fine to spam, the shield will break within a GCD on big pulls resulting in similar value to Cure II spam. It's instant cast and can be used while moving. You can buff it with Zoe. It gets a really big proc if it crits. It's cheaper than Cure II. Basically it's superior. The idea that WHM is better on big pulls than SCH/SGE thanks to Cure II is just a myth and down to experience because a 300 potency heal + shield doesn't feel as big as a health bar jumping up by 700 worth. But it is. SCH in particular has more heal power than WHM when out of oGCD's due to Embrace going off during Adlo Spam resulting in higher hps than Cure II spam.Quote:

I'll make this clear. My thread was not asking if WHM was viable or not. I have cleared some of the hardest content in the game on the "worst" classes before. I just wanted to know what the current state of WHM was, and right now, from both the replies here, in other threads and the stats from clears, WHM appears to be the worst of all healer classes. I prefer playing the most optimal healers or healer simply because I am able to play whichever class and would rather be a boon (dps and ehsp wise) to the group I'm playing with. WHM clearly needs some buffs if they want to compete with the other healers. I hope they do because I do enjoy the class.

This might be the reason why SE removed most of our DPS tool. But now its the opposite.
Misery should be a OGCD. Tetragram should have charges(atleast 3???)
Keep assize and asylum as it is.
Remove Medica and make Cure III’s range wider while it keep its potency.. . I just happend to witness ALOT of whm using cure III iin savage pug…….
Rename Medica II into eh Medica? Regen become OGCD(with quick 5 cd just like cleric stance) Since aspected benefic heal on when applied but regen doesnt… what?
Bring back Aero III and stone magic + addre potency. Glare III looks EXCACT like Glare I with a blind eye.
What more? Oh yeah turn Thin Air back. -

Cure 3 definitely needs to be wider (and cheaper). Especially since they keep designing huge arenas and spreading players out and lily only hits on yourself. Ugh the more I think about it the more annoyed I get. How can the devs not see what we see? The glaring faults that WHM has compared to the other healers? Seriously just take it into any content and REALISE how it just lacks in every way.

IMO, White Mage needs to lean into the 'fat stacks' GCD heals identity, with optimization being focused around resource management (MP, Lilies, ability stacks), and minimising the usage of healing spells themselves, in order to focus on DPS. Simple but potent is where I feel WHM belongs best.
Poor WHM play (overhealing) should absolutely drain your MP pool, but perfectly competent play should not, and I feel that's where a lot of the MP issues are stemming from. Glare III should absolutely have an MP cost reduction to make it MP-neutral to spam if that's going to be what WHM gameplay will be like.
As for actual skill changes, I'd trait Medica I into Medica II (and Cure I into Cure II), have Cure 3's range increased but potency nerfed to compensate, and reduce Lilybell's cooldown to 120 seconds, as a trade-off for not dealing damage.
That, and reversing Assize's MP regen nerf, and slashing the MP costs of Medica II and Cure II by 50%. WHM shouldn't be paying a 50% MP tax on GCD heals for the same effects as Aspected Helios and Benefic II.
