Tell that to the shareholders who hold all the strings. Yoshi-P and the rest of the dev team have no say in it, not even a single bit. They can resign yeah but if management comes and forces something onto them they have to do it.
And japanese people aren't really...uh...known to voice concern to superiors, lol.
Steam has banned them and the game is on steam.
The nice thing is that due to how FFXIV is built, I think there's not much that could be tied to NFT without causing bugs or unbearable loads on the servers.
But yeah. Don't do this shit, SE.
I don't get it to be honest, other than pushing some planned outrage, it's just dumb all around, because when they want more money, they just have to put a new mount in the store or a few new emotes... It usually works well and people in good will will just buy it most of the time, to support but also for themselves if the mount is very popular if it's an interesting mount or emote too...
This... Is just unprofessional... Just trying to make money out of thin air, because nft's aren't even crypto, they are just "links" / adresses to images, not even a data set in any blockchain, nor even a portion of a blockchain encrypted into it.
This isn't a real thing. Everyone, calm down.
Much ado about nothing. It's all going to be fine.
for people who think this can be done gracefully, reminder of how ham fisted immersive audio was added to xiv.
i still cant unmute my client.
NFT's are complete garbage, but I don't have enough faith in people to actually believe that there'd be an exodus. At most, there would be a giant collective sigh and then everyone would continue logging in and at most the queue's would drop by like 200 people and we'd be waiting hours to get in regardless lol. A lot of people put up a big verbal fight pulling out all stops shouting from every rooftop, and then finally when it comes time for them to take action it's crickets followed by a sheepish "w-well...y-you cant expect ME to just drop my favorite thing...YOU guys should b-b-but...me?? it's my..my uh...its my coping..its my comfort game!!" Oh I can just see it now. And then maybe the 200 or so that quit would attempt a crusade against those who didnt oh it'd be a mess.
SQenix aren't stupid enough to shoehorn NFTs into their cashcow and risk damaging all the goodwill Yoshida has built up.
Fun fact: Shareholders do not get to dictate game design.
Shareholders only have a voice when they own 51% or more, otherwise known as a controlling share.
Regular shareholders are basically told how well the company is doing and how much money they expect to make. Thats it.
Shareholders say: We want you to make more money.
And thats it.
Yoshida is on the board of directors. He has actual power in SQenix. FFXIV is his magnum opus and he will fight hard against anything SQenix tries to do if it is actively detrimental to his game and us players.
The executives know that Yoshida made XIV one of their most successful games. Suffering from success now i guess lol.
They wont risk damaging the FF brand again and they certainly will not risk losing Yoshida, he is simply too valuable to the company to drive him out by trying to ruin his game.
Considering the huge number of former WoW players we have, who basically are here because of a mass exodus from their last game when they'd all finally had enough, it could easily have a big impact. Player patience has worn somewhat thin with greedy game developers over the years.
Fortunately there's a good chance Yoshida has enough influence to keep this out of ff14. He's the main reason we don't have WoW tokens, 6 month subscription mounts, heavy FOMO and treadmill game systems and all the rest. SE are a very monetization focused company as a whole.
The moment NFT appear in FFXIV is the moment I'll unsub.
NFTs are yummy!
Valve does not allow blockchain technology (Including cryptocurrency and NFTs) on any games on the Steam platform, which is good news for us since FF14 is on Steam.
Such stances can change over time, particularly for the right incentive...
I'd also assume that if NFT's were supposedly such a horrible, inexcusable red line for many individuals than the company making use of them elsewhere would be enough for such people to take their leave even if they were not tied to FFXIV directly.
I think people kinda forget that Yoshi is actually a member of the board at SE, he's not simply in charge of just the FF14 division but part of the overall leadership. They gave him this position a few years back so that he can have almost full control over the game.
Wow... Square Enix is making money hand over fist with ff14 subscribtions, but they want to throw it all away by being greedy. SE is failing to learn the lessons of history, doomed to repeat them. SE one of the few wise game companies who stuck to the subscription model instead of injecting all the stupid monetization schemes that RUIN a game... well greed made them forget.
NFT's Start and my subscription will stop.
If SE introduces NFT's why should I pay a subscription to play anyway?
Two things...
1) I think most people here overestimate the mount of absolute power YoshiP has. He still has superiors. And yes, even being on the board he is but one voice.
2) Japanese culture. Most American's don't really understand this (even when they claim to). In Japanese culture it is severely frowned upon to contradict your superior. (Source: Lived there for 5 years).
I'm not saying I expect NFTs in FFXIV, but I am saying them NOT making their way in is a sure thing either.
This exactly. Let's pretend that instead of NFTs, SE announced that it was going to begin using child slave labor. If you were really opposed to child slave labor, you wouldn't be like: "Well, it's okay if they're using child slaves to make the FFVII remake so as long as they don't use them in connection with FFXIV." No. If you were really opposed to it, you would stop supporting the company whatsoever. Given that so many people are like "NFTs are horrible!... but I'll continue to support SE by playing FFXIV so long as they don't taint just this one product" is very telling.
Huh... I hadn't thought of it like that.
That's making a lot of sense to me.
Yeah, new plan: if they follow through, I will too. If they start making NFTs I'm gone.
Not even just in a "vote with your wallet" sense, but also because the game just won't feel fun after that.
Wouldn't be the first time a game company turned too sleazy for me to feel joy while playing their games...
Nothing wrong with NFT's. It's staggering how little people understand crypto and NFT's. It's like people who were against the internet back in the day.
no NFT's MADGE bad SE BAD BOY
we don't need nft's to ruin games
If Yoshi is on the board of directors, then it's likely he was involved with the behind the scenes decisions to support NFTs. He's likely on board with the CEOs choices.
While I'm not against companies trying out new ventures, and experimenting with new technologies, the letter that the CEO of Square Enix wrote was utter garbage. I think he should step down.
IF we ever hear 14 is going f2p, we will know what will replace the subs.
I will only pray to god that they do not do NFTs. The moment that XIV decides to do NFTs in-game is when this game dies. Haven't they bothered to even look at Ubisoft's gigantic gaming backlash? PLAYERS DO NOT WANT NFTs. PERIOD. Next Livestream we need to send that message to Yoshida straight up as a community.
Then enlighten us. I submit that gaming NFTs are a scam because they have zero value. None at all. Prove me wrong. What is one way in which NFTs could possibly improve this game? Anything at all that could not be done without NFTs. What is one conceivable way that my item is better or more useful or more secure or more easily traded if there is a digital certificate attached to it? Name me one benefit to having say, a blockchain registry of item ownership or housing plot ownership. Literally anything.
Sometimes people who understand the inner workings of something are unable to see the vast forest of stupidity (the abject wastefulness and pointlessness of the whole endeavor) for the trees.
You're wrong about that. As SE's CEO himself said in his recently letter, there are players who "play to have fun" and then there are those players who "play to contribute." I know there are many of us who have just been waiting for the chance to give back to this for-profit corporation and now's our chance!!
Where do I even start? Most people know NFT's as digital goods but in actuality they can do more than that. They can also be use to store information digitally. This could include things like identity documentation, digital art, proof of ownership documents etc. Think of an NFT as a digital container. saying it has no value makes zero sense. It's value is determined by what you decide to keep in the container. Your identity documents are valuable to you but I would assign no value to them myself. What most people think NFTs are is just digital art and that's because that is what is big right now. So how does this fit into gaming?
Let's take FFXIV. I know people that drop 100's of dollars on items in the mog store. They do not own these items. If you get your account removed or FFXIV shuts down then the items are gone. If we took everything that was in the MOG store right now and made it an NFT what would change? Would the EVIL NFT outfits ruin the game? no. In fact, it would be a benefit. You would own that item. You could decide to sell me an outfit that you purchased that you no longer need. Yes, SE would get a cut but so what? I got an item that I wanted and you sold an item that you did not. There is also the additional benefit that SE could decide to make that outfit give you a benefit in another game. Maybe you could import that NFT outfit and wear a similar one in a different sony game or break it down for another item. If SE decides to it could also allow integration with other companies so your NFT outfit had integrations there. Even if you were to be banned by SE they could not take the NFT outfit from you as you own it on the blockchain.
If it's not a real thing, then it seems pretty concerning that the CEO of square-enix not only believes it is a real thing but also believes it should be in his company's games because it somehow represents the future of gaming.
So.. yeah. That doesn't make it any better.
This is such a weird mentality. "Measured and nuanced responses are BAD!!!"
What a weird claim. You would not suddenly own the item, no. For one thing, the item is just digital garbage, so there's nothing there to own. For another, if FFXIV shut down... There goes your item. You don't get to keep it because there's nothing there.
"You own it on the blockchain."
Please... Come back to reality instead of your make-believe fantasy world.
Can someone explain what a nft is? Or how they would put them in the game.
Either you or I are missing the really obvious. With the server gone and the game shut down, I don't care how you own your item. Some meaningless bit on a blockchain or the data is burn into a physical disk sent to your door with a ribbon, without the actual gaming environment to apply it it's meaningless.
Nice sarcasm. But yeah, the whole deal with "play to have fun" is more or less relevant to at least 90% of their revenue for FFXIV. The "play to contribute" part is directed towards their influencers, which is <1% of the playerbase of XIV. If we're considering other games with online functionality, then NFTs are more or less an attempt to get the "play to have fun" people to either be made to buy into the "play to contribute" portion or simply have the company take a cut in sales of say, anything XIV-related. This would be devastating for Artists of all kinds as well for XIV.
I gave a brief explanation in the post at the top of this page.
The value would depend on the market. There are always people that want to collect items. Look at people that collect figurines for shows that are over and done with. Also, if there are integrations with other games or developers then use of the items still persists.
If anyone really needs a good retrospective view, check out Quazii's Youtube. He actually did a video on this particular issue and goes into depth about it(despite him basically reacting to Asmongold, for those who've already seen Asmongold's video).
