I wouldn't mind undercutting if there was a minimum amount you could undercut by. If I want to sell something for 20k and someone else is willing to take 15k for it, that's fine. But 19,999? Come on now.
Under cutting by 1 gill I understand. I can even understand undercutting by 1% .
I don't understand undercutting by +20%
... when people undercut me by 1 gil i end up lowering the price by 20%, funny.
edit: I.E: mythril wristlets i'm constantly getting undercut by 1 no matter the price i set 20k i get undercut by 1, i lower to 15k? they lower it to 14.9k and i only see 5-10 ppl who actually sell this. but it is like this for all the most liked SB equip., but still, very annoying.
It is dumb, but just buy their shit and resell.
maybe you have time to constantly reprice stuff on your retainers, i dont. its not about the money, its about the hassle of this UI. i'm still rich, beeotch. ;-)
Yeah people do it purely to fuck with you. For example if you're the only one selling something, someone will pop up and undercut you by 5-8k or more at times even though you can make quite the profit.
Last sold was 120k a few months ago and haven't been seen since in any market, so you start making it and sell it for 80k due to lower price on mats etc, someone pops up and decide "hey, I want to sell this too now!" and sell it for 20k.
I mean really?
I try and match lowest price on stuff I sell unless I feel it will sell with in 24hours at a higher rate, casue in the end undercuters are hurting them selfs + others casue lowing the over all price of stuff.
Wonder if they ever plan on letting players know what player the retainer is selling for. Prob never happen casue it woudl bring up more issues lol
It's a free market. If someone wants to sell something for cheaper than you, then that's their right. There is no arbitrary inflexible "true price" for a given item that you can declare from which no one is allowed to deviate. You may think it's dumb that someone sells something for far cheaper than you think it's worth, but what if they have a cheaper source for their materials, such as if they've worked out a supply arrangement with some gatherers? There's no golden rule that "item X is 150k, any less than that is undercutting." If it costs a crafter less to make something and he can make it in greater volume than you, he'd be stupid not to try to sell it for cheaper than his competition, and he may very well be trying to drive the competition (i.e., you) away. You need to either compete with their prices, wait it out if you don't think they're in it for the long haul, or deal with it.
For as much as all of the FFXI players seem to like to make themselves out to be rugged individualists, one of the things that struck me most when I started playing was how many of them bawl about being undercut.
its just annoying. with so many people obviously botting, its really lame to spend so much time reorganizing my retainers to compete with people who could care less how much they get for mats they spent next to no time gathering. maybe i'm out of bounds here, but if you are going to let bots run rampant, at least make the system for selling said mats more user friendly so those of us actually playing the game don't feel like a-holes for spending so much time doing something as stupid as repricing mats over and over again. /annoyed
This is reason why I don't like items showing price history...
its not a free market, people are botting like crazy. fyi
I undercut all the time and idc cuz i get gil either way it goes >_>.
lolz
I undercut like a madman this morning so that hopefully I could sell something.
/knockknockknock
/s Delivery from Undercutter's Pizza!
I undercut because I play for maybe 3 hours or so every other day and If i undercut by only a few k someone else will undercut me so I make sure mine sells
Even if it was a "free market" kind of funny how tier IV materia always hover around the 100-500k mark, I mean if it's a 'free market" why aren't people selling it for much lower than 100k? Obvious people know the worth of items, which is why undercutting is ridiculous when they do it by wide margins.
There's quite the difference between undercutting a mere 1k to try to sell more and undercutting by damn near 80% lol.
Uhn... I'm slowly working on my crafting :D
Also, I will admit: I undercut because I sincerely believe that everyone should put stuff for sale for minimum token prices so that anyone ever can buy whatever they want with maximum ease! I sincerely expect to never make the tinyest bit of profit in my entire life playing XIV!
I know, it's weird, and I expect myself to be the only one out there that does that sort of crazy stuff, but it's a deep belief of mine. (if you're ever 'round my server, do look for my retainers everywhere but Ul'Dah, ingredients for sale for just 100! If I get gear to sell it's usually about 2k, no prices above that!)
i'm going to bail on my own thread now...some of you get it, others don't. high five.
What gets me the most is when undercutting drives the price of stuff down so far it becomes so low that its not worth the time to garther or craft it. I do feel that mainly casue many of the ppl crafting and prob garthing are botting... and dont understand why SE dont just do something about them and all the RMT(thats for a dif thread though ).

Really, as long as I'm making a decent percentage over the material investment for craftables and NPC value for gatherables, I'm ok with that. I'll undercut people if they keep undercutting me to the point where it's not worth it anymore and then I'll just sit on the stuff until it stabilizes.
Like others, I tend to list my items at the current low price, or if none are on sale, close to the last price that it sold for, marked up a little bit. I took advantage of Intelligence potions for the BLM burn parties and made enough money to cover the investment of materials off my initial sales. Then some guy kept undercutting me. My price dropped gradually from 25k to 10k per potion (which was already high since they were only hi-potions) since I was willing to keep going lower since my initial investment was already recovered.
Hello and welcome to a free market.
and then people with bots will sell there's for 1 mil and continue botting and people actually playing the game will quit gathering or crafting or worse, quit the game. but who cares right? 2.0 is going to solve everything.../sigh
how about ya just chill wait for ppl to buy that guy item before your
The irony of it all is m ost of the richest and "most successful" people exploited Necro pages and uses (or used) Moetoy to "get around horrible game mechanics"..aka botting lol. People who said they didn't bot or exploit necro pages and "just know how to play" were always found to be lying because when SE patched necros those who didn't already max out all classes suddenly could no longer plow through levels.
Kinda funny huh? :P
Alrighty, then.
There was a quite thorough discussion of undercutting located here.
