So up until Shadowbringers we had job quest that explained why we exist and the backstory to our characters. It gave details to why certain abilities exist. In Shadowbringers we got role quest and in the context of the story the community gave Square Enix a pass. Now in Endwalker we are getting...you guessed it more role quest.
One mistake I see MMO's make that gut the RPG experience is homogenization. I cannot put into words how much of a mistake it is to abandon job quest in a Final Fantasy. All I can do is beg that this is not the future direction of FF14 where jobs are further homogenized. I get that dev time is limited and you have a lot of pressure on you but going this direction is a mistake.
After Endwalker or during it you are going to need to return to your roots as the complaints about RPG elements being stripped out of the MMO are going to become louder as it begins to feel like a shallow experience. Just because you got away with it in Shadowbringers does not mean this should be the future.
I picked Paladin....not generic Tank Role.

We don't just have ten jobs anymore. We have nineteen. This fall there'll be twenty-one. The amount of quests that need to be made to give all the jobs their own ten level quest line is about as many quests as there are in one expansion MSQ. I'm okay with them not spending dev time on individual job quest lines.

Imagine if in Heavensward the Dragoon quest was just Physical Melee damage quest and that was it. Apply this to Stormblood. Now all of the Monks, Dragoons and Samurais all get the same quest.
We finally get the Paladin focused expansion and I get told I am only getting some generic tank role quest. It is enraging honestly how lazy it is. The only reason they are getting a pass is because they hit a home run with Shadowbringers and the role quest made sense in relation to the setting and story of Shadowbringers. -

That's a total of 30 Jobs each needing five Quests which is 150 Job Quests. Reaper and Sage also need to get extra Job Quests for 70 to 80 so that's another five each plus the unlock quest for another one each. That brings the total amount up to 164 Job/Class Quests. They already admitted to having problems when it was 15 Jobs and now there even more. The devs aren't lazy, it's that the amount of work isn't sustainable.Quote:

I understand the point about expanding numbers of jobs, but nobody enjoys doing quests just for the sake of doing them. If there are too many jobs to do each justice, just drop the job story quests altogether outside of their initial introduction. There's no universal representation for a given role, which is why players demand variety in the first place. Tanks are not all max muscles male Roegadyn Paladins. Let me pick and choose for myself if a story is worth following or not.
Do you know what would be a much better replacement? Every so often, get some of your really good writers to pick a job at random, and write a series of job quests about them, Moogle Delivery quest style. Start with some of the ones that you know were hits rather than misses. Frey, Rogue's Guild, Hamond Holyfist, etc. Make it optional, with some job specific glamours (alternate animations, stances, etc.) as rewards for completion. You don't have to hit every job each expansion, but you can certainly give an update every blue moon on how your old friends are doing. -

At our current level, our characters are barely learning anything from anyone else. They are actively "creating" new abilities that are now absorbed by the soul stones. So it makes sense that the only job related quests are singular, at level 80, then 90 I guess.
I do miss developping the lore of a job more gradually, especially for some more recent jobs like Gunbreaker, though for that one the Bozja questline did add quite a bit to it.
However, in the current situation, all we can hope is that the role quests will be fun AND will show our character in action as paragons of their roles. (Let me see my Tank use a tank ability in a cutscene dammit) -

Not once had it occurred to me tho, that to play a role, aka my character, I'd need quests to be immersed. Or a training montage etc.

Anyway, ShB at least has 1 quest per job at the end, the only problem is that they don't have the blue marker so unless you specifically google for them or do ALL side quests you'll never get to do them. The marker I think also only shows if you're on that job so...I just wish they'd make them more evident, or add them to quest tracker? Because as it is I keep forgetting to do them even though I maxed all job like a year ago. But I hope EW keeps at least that, 1 single quest per job per expansion. -

To be honest the quests were fine. You had the role quests, then every class got an individual quest at 80, then you had another quest for doing all the role quests which had quite an interesting plot overall. It didn't feel like they cut corners and considering the number of jobs will only grow I'm glad they're planning ahead for the future and managing their resources (something they've struggled with in other areas).

You have to understand my opinion of this is informed by my experience of Blizzard doing exactly what Square Enix is doing right now and it was a MASSIVE MASSIVE mistake. There was a time when you had Paladin quest.....Warlocks used to have to go on quest to obtain their pets.... Warriors used to have to compete in a battle arena to learn their attacks. I remember WoW players at WoW's peak telling me it was no big deal and it was more convenient.
I cannot stress how important these quest were in building a connection with your class in WoW and how bad it hurt the RPG aspect of the MMO to watch it get watered down, stripped out with no real replacements. It cost more money and subs then money they saved by not making a quest or 2 once an expansion.
In the end getting rid of class quest allowed the devs to basically homogenize the tank classes to the point you could barely tell the difference. Class/Job quest FORCES a developer to recognize the difference and explain why something makes sense in the lore for that job. We are starting to see this now.
Right now you have to understand that Square Enix is telling every Paladin in the game that you are no longer a Paladin but Archeatype tank with no special difference between Gunbreaker, Warrior or Dark Knight anymore. We all do the same tank quest.
They are stripping out the ROLE PLAYING ELEMENTS in a Final Fantasy game for the sake of time and convenience and I think the community should be extremely concerned. This is a mistake that will come back to haunt Square Enix as the MMO will start to feel devoid of any connection to its RPG elements maybe not this expansion or the next but I promise you it is coming. -

It just seems like they're saving resources. Back in ARR, there were less jobs overall and generally I'd say the game wasn't as expansive as it currently is. For me personally, there was nothing inherently "RPG" about any of them. It was excrutiatingly boring to finish them and unlock actions to complete your toolkit. The endless amount of text didn't alleviate the feeling of being forced through them unless you skipped it. I don't miss them at all.
The only job quests I'll probably miss will be the DRK questline. Otherwise, what they're doing now is absolutely fine in my opinion. That's the direction they chose and I hope they deliever on it. -

I'd say many of them are very shallow and have no room to breathe. SAM from 60 to 70 was boring. Every WHM quest is painfully generic. You can't tell a decent story in the odd 5 quests or so you get from old cap to new.
The ShB option is the way to go. They tell a way, way better story, are interconnected and more than the sum of their parts on top of a nice incentive to play different roles to see all aspects of it. I'm more than happy we get that. -

SAM from 50 to 60 was a nice exception, though (I think it was that range). 60 to 70 in comparison was very boring for me. Character gets introduced, has like 3 lines of dialogue and then dies. And I am supposed to care? It's just not enough time to tell something compelling every expansion.
There is a reason why Emet is such a compelling villain. He got time to, y'know, develop.
Same can be said for Stormblood and why so many felt it's the weakest expansion. -

The problem is, not all job quests are created equal. Just comparing DRK and PLD as an example. PLD has never really had an engaging story, whereas DRK is widely considered one of the best stories to go through and I think alot of that has to do with how the jobs are in the lore of the game. Dark Knights are old Ishgardian Knights that were not happy with the corruption going on behind the scenes. They took their inner anger and used it against the corrupt. This inevitably causes the negative emotions inside to start sprouting and threatening to take over. The DRK story is all about trying to control these emotions and learning it is not just the negative ones that fuel your power, but off of them.
Paladin, on the other hand, you are a Royal Knight of the Sultanate. Normally, you would be bound to the Sultanate and be unable to leave, however they have granted you permission to continue to explore the world, as long as you continue to uphold your morals as a knight. That is basically it. The jobs quests themselves are dull and even in Stormblood, the make you play as a Gladiator again. The sole quest in ShB was also a let down. They big up a fight with Aldis and then he runs away when the time comes. It is just a complete let down to hype up a fight and then not have it happen.
However, going to the Role Quests, while, yes, they did not have much to do with your job, it does kind of tie into your role, though they could make the connection stronger in EW. They were much better stories and they all had a big fight at the end. Which is another thing that Job Quests don't do. Not all of them finish in a big fight. The discrepancies between the quality of the job quests (even between themselves) and the role quests are miles apart and I for one would rather have the better story in the role quests than the potentially half assed job quests that will probably disappoint you. -

The thing is though, the only class/job quests that gave you an ability and specifically stated it in the quest are all from ARR. With the exception if Summoner (someone can correct me if I am wrong) no other job quest from HW onwards have been about learning a specific ability. Even in ARR, you don't do a duty specifically for an action, the job trainer just says, I think you are ready for this ability, here you go. There is never any lore behind the ability you learn. Sure, you can find examples where it does, however the vast majority of them do not.
Add into that the SB quests only give you an action for the last quest, where NONE of them have a lore reason why you learn it (I have not double checked that, but I am 99% confident) and from there it is just a story that has some ties to your job. Some of it being new things, some of it being in the same vein, just continued on.
The job quests provide virtually no substance in how your character grows as a job and I would argue that there is nothing else the job trainers can teach you, you have surpassed the master at this point. From now on, you will just be following them into situations that need a skilled job, which you happen to be and have some vague ties to the job. Or it is something that could be solved by anyone, you just happen to need to be X job to do it.
So, with the WoL being the pinnacle of their job, why should we add 'generic story #4' for the jobs and not try something that could be more unique. Something that doesn't have to be forced to have some sort of vague tie in with a job, keeping it more open. As an example, all tank jobs have their roots in protecting something, so rather than 4 sub par stories, you can make 1 more engaging story that really pulls from the strengths of the tanking role. -

some of them might have a bit of important or meaningful information (such as SCH and the nymean plague. and DRG/DRK's character moments), but by and large they're inconsequential.
AST's entirely screwed, since now they dont even have to go back and fix the class quest info they've made false now (no time magics, no card effects, no sects now), since it'll all be role quests from here on out, and sage will basically get nothing to stand on itself either (like DNC and GNB--you get your ten levels and now the class npcs and lore is effectively irrelevant forever), so we'd all best hope nothing important gets brought up in them or there's no interesting characters, since they will be abandoned immediately and permanently. -

The card effects have shifted but they've never been taken away. The idea of reading the cards to tell a man's fortune and empower him in battle remains; only the exact effects have shifted to all boost attack instead of their more specific purposes. The script has already been altered accordingly and the Ewer is the only one severely impacted by losing its concept as the "source of all magic" (MP boost) because it now serves ranged DPS as well.
As for sects, only the writers know what will happen now, but either the 60-70 story will see some rewriting or the Nocturnal Sect skill will be retained in some other form that still fits the story. Some combination of the two approaches is likely. -

I think what most multi year FF14 players forget as you guys are in a bubble but the RPG part of MMO's is basically dead in the genre at the moment. Korean MMO's have a massive focus only on big flashy spells, American MMO developers outside of ESO 100% focus on end game with zero class development, Chinese developers are more focus on grind with monetization options, European developers are basically non existent and the Japanese developers are the last bastion of core RPG game development.Quote:

What I especially dislike about role quest in Endwalker is I have played Paladin in literally every MMO or single player game that has ever offered them and Endwalker is supposed to be the Paladin expansion inspired by LITERALLY my favorite Final Fantasy game which is 4. Every story has an ending, even the good ones. MMOs often feel compelled to keep a story going well beyond its natural potential, turning what was good into a soulless husk of what it once was.
It's okay for the job quests to have a natural endpoint. Some characters, like Frey, get their value out of when they choose to appear. The fade to black WHAM moment 'Justice deserves no less/I tire of this charade' in the level 70 DRK quest only works because Frey's story has been over and done with for the past 20 levels. There's actually a lot of potential with this, we know that the game is capable of flagging optional events that you've seen and having that change the dialogue that you get. Could Frey have a cameo in the MSQ for DRK mains? It's possible.
I feel that if they want to pay homage to some of the better written job storylines, it should be as an optional side feature. One thing that I really want to see is job animation glamours, similar to how Warcraft's glyph system works. As I mentioned earlier, you could always pick a job at random for a patch, moogle delivery quest style, and explore a bit of additional job related lore with an unlockable bit of glamour tied to the end.
But there will always be more stories. I'm really looking forward to what they do with the Reaper job and its adorably evil Avatar. There's something about arguing with the dark side of your persona that never gets old.
