My first experience as a tank - I thought I was playing WoW for a second

New player, decided to start level a new job: Gunbreaker.

Not even one minute passed...

- dude, are you a bot lmao
- yeah, he's a bot, report him
- you have to pull more than one group
- god you're bad
- etc

I was under the impression that me, as a player, can play the WAY I WANT and I couldn't even explain that this was my first time tanking because the moment I pull the first pack the insults came down.
I was also under the impression that this "community" was... different, but old as I am, I should know by now that EVERY ONLINE GAME IS THE SAME.
I just lost interested to keep playing, honestly.
By the way, I'm reporting the whole party if they are reading this, just so they know.

I feel you and I'm sorry that you had an bad experience, but may I also suggest that it may be a better idea to start tanking with picking up a level 1 tank-job and not the advanced level 60 class? Because people will expect that you know exactly what to do at that level as a tank and if you get into a level 50+ dungeon they won't expect you to be a first timer.

Also you have a Dragoon Lv 80 so you can't be exactly a new player, unless you bought the level up pack from the shop which is never a good idea because it won't prepare you how to actually play the game, skipping all the tutorial steps. In this case, if you haven't already, I would suggest that you go and visit the beginner arena "hall of novice", you can find it at any starting city near the guest rooms. You are entitled to play the way you want... but most groups in leveling want to get in and get out of a dungeon quickly so when you get a tank dragging thier feet, yeah people are going to get annoyed at that, signficantly.You picked the lvl 60 tank job at the start, so people are going to expect at that point that you know how to tank, and tanks pull farily large in dungeons. When a tank pulls small 1 of 3 options happen.

1) Healer can't heal large groups.
2) Tank isn't geared.
3) Tank isn't experienced with tanking.

Yes and no. FF14 is a multiplayer-game and a dungeon needs you to cooperate with at least 3 other players. So you have to work together and do your best to beat that dungeon. To ensure this, you have a task to do defined by your job-role - so no, you can't just play how you want, you have to play in the best interest of your group. And they may kick you, if you don't.

You may not endanger the group, but most people don't want do play it slow and if they are feeling that you may be wasting their time, they may kick you because of "difference in playstyle".

Also, again, this is mainly an issue in higher-up dungeons. If you haven't experienced tanking yet, I may suggest again to start with one of the basic level 1 tank-jobs, doing the jobquests there and start out with tanking low level dungeons like sastasha, were people are more understanding with new tanks.

Hmm... I understand both points of views here. You want to play slower and take your time, while they want to get in and get out like the majority of the people playing this game. Neither side has the wrong opinion and you also can create a pre-made with your friends and slow roll if you wanted as well. Or if you're in the ShB dungeons use the Trust system. Also, reporting them isn't going to do anything unless they were harassing you and calling you names. Difference of play style is an acceptable reason to kick someone too so *shrug* not much you can do except try again. Make sure you mention at the very beginning of the run you're a new tank and want to go slower while you're learning. You may also want to pick a different tank class while learning to tank first. Gladiator/Paladin is my usual suggestion as it's straight forward and starts at level 1 so you can learn how to run dungeons from the very beginning. Good luck!

I've had many terrible tanks in my PUG group but never saw such immediate harassment from players, usually they give constructive criticism or simply ask to pull more. What was it that you did wrong exactly? Was it just the fact you did small pulls? If they immediately harassed you for that, than I think you just got very unlucky with you PUG. Or you're in a more toxic datacenter than I am idk.

I pull the first group and stay there, they run pass me to the next group and start attacking them while saying what was above mentioned.

Like you, as a dps, I've seen tanks not pulling their best, but the rest of the group stayed cool and gave them advice and all turned out to be alright.
Me, first time as a tank... this happened. Yeah, maybe that's just bad luck. I want to believe so, because in my 400-ish hours so far (like I said, new player), I only saw 2 or 3 at best toxic moments in all dungeons, trials and raids.

Yeah I get it would be frustrating to have that as your very first tanking experience but I wouldn't worry about it. Odds of that happening again seems very low.

If you're decent enough geared I'd also just recommend to try to immediately pull more mob packs even if you're inexperienced, cause there's really not much you can do wrong with how tanking works nowadays. You'll probably have no problem doing that right away but if not confident enough you can train with dummies or open world mobs and act like you're pulling a mob pack (just AoE) and use defensive cooldowns etc as if you're taking damage, then simply apply what you've trained once you're back in the dungeon and you'll have your group more satisfied.

Or just queue for low level dungeons and practice there. You'll be beyond overgeared as GNB for like first 3 dungeons to the point you won't even need a healer.

edit: actually you can just do some low level dungeons unsynced and train that way.

And if you have enough progress in a grand company you can run lower level dungeons with npcs that do sync.

Never hurts to let people know you're a new tank when you first enter a dungeon either.

Unless they were following you outside the instance and sending you messages as well or the level of vitriol drastically shot up past what you've told us I really hope you don't think what they were saying was actual harassment. If it is, you really ought to grow a thicker skin, especially if you're going to be tanking.

When your gear get synced down and you are in a 50+ dungeon, then everyone expects you to pull more because otherwise it gets boring for the DDs and healer.
It just feels useless to AOE just 3 monsters while you could kill 9 in the same time and could do the boss next.

If you want to learn tanking, start at 1.
Because a lot player are willing to help someone "new".
With a level 60 GNB in lvl 50+ dungeons you are not new anymore.

If people don't know you're new to the role, they'll assume you are going to know what you're doing if it's not your first time in a dungeon.
You've clearly leveled Dragoon, so you're not going to pop any new player bonus messages to people when you zone in. The expectation there is you aren't new, you know what you're doing.

Being absolutely rude like that isn't acceptable, but you should also see it from the other coin. You never told them you were new [to tanking].

That being said, you also just can't play the WAY YOU WANT because you're responsible for 3 other people. You're not playing for you, you're playing with them.
Welcome to the tank life, my friend. It's a fantastic role I'll never give it up. But it can be hard to step into for first timers.

Nobody is expecting that. You picked up a lvl 60 tank so people naturally assume you'll know some basics of tanking such as that level cap dungeons (50/60/70/80) are multipull land, quite often wall-to-wall pull land. The monsters there hurt a lot less than in leveling dungeons thanks to the generous level sync. Again, those people shouldn't have that kind of a first reaction and they were definitely being more rude than needed. Saying you're new to tanking or that it's your first time tanking a new instance right from the start might be a good idea until you get the hang of it.

Not gonna lie, I hate this attitude. Ever seen a discussion sparked by a DPS single targetting in a 10+ mob pull at a level 80 dungeon? Or a healer spamming Cure 1 in that same multipull or perhaps in a 70+ level trial or raid? That's their attitude too. I know what you're going for here but trying to understand what the expectation is going to be when going in and trying to fill that is a very good idea. I promise you the bar for decent isn't all that high.

This too. Your run of the mill run of a roulette dungeon take +/- 15 minutes, maybe a bit longer depending on dungeon, and all it takes is tank pulling packs and using some mitigation, healer keeping said tank above 0 health and everyone involved using AOEs. It's not a speedrun, it's normal run. It's the regular expectation. You're suggesting the vast majority do dungeons with pre-mades instead of doing it yourself if you want to be the deviation from the norm. I get that you're salty about the situation but that argument makes no sense.

I honestly feel symphatetic towards you in this situation. You got unlucky and ran into rude people and nobody wants to see that kind of thing. Still, I'm really hoping you change your own attitude too.

Wander’s Normal is kind of the only dungeon in the game where it excepts you to go fast. Otherwise get Murdered by the giant Tonberry which I think still happens with the level syncing.

Again you didn’t deserve to get harassed but the game dealt you one bad dungeon to start tanking on.

Don’t give up just because you had people criticize you. You’ll never grow like that. Just go out there and fail over and over again. Who cares what people say in the text box? Minimize it and keep pulling those adds.

Look up some tank guides. It will give you the run down in what to do. Don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. If you pull too much and I can’t heal you then know that I failed you. You’ll still get a comm from me because I like burning a million adds at once.

I’m actually a tad worried about this going forward if we get a new tank or healer, jobs that might start at highe levels and thus start at a more difficult starting point for that role.

Yes we can see/feel that Tanking/Healing is stupid easy but a first time Tank/Healer in that DF level? What about the next one if they start at 60?

GNB and DNC start at 60. The next expansions additions would most likely start at 70.
BTW we already have people starting their very first job at 70 on any role and trying Holminster Switch as their first dungeon without any prior experience of party content thanks to jump potions. The stories I've read don't paint the prettiest of pictures of how well it works out. I believe the game just plops you in with no tutorial whatsoever but I'm not entirely sure as I have never seen what exactly happens when you use one.

Firstly - your description being ambiguous - then the very first group of tonberries in the Palace attacking the NPC adventurers are not supposed to be fought. They're more or less decorative and you're supposed to run past them to the first real group of enemies around the corner. New players do get caught out by it though.

Secondly, as MerlinCross said, you need to go fast in there because of the tonberry stalkers. You don't want to be caught by them, so players are likely to be anxious to keep moving and get as much of a head start as possible.

Thirdly, if they're suspecting you're a bot, then did you do anything to convince them otherwise? Type a message to them? Did they say anything prior to accusing you of being a bot?

While the insults are uncalled for, I would be suspecting a bot too if the tank was acting like that and didn't make any attempt to respond.

Mm, i'm a little suspicious about the way things went down here. People don't really whip out the "are you a bot?" just cause a tank is single pulling. Something else was going wrong here.

What if you just have to do a mandatory solo instance before you are allowed to use Duty Finder, in which you'd have to tank like you're supposed to in order to succeed? Maybe I'm biased because of experience but I really feel like you get the hang of tanking after 1 dungeon. Make the solo instance tough so you'll need to play your tanking role well (including cooldown) otherwise the instance fails. Instance will usually fail then a couple times if it's a new tank but that's how it should be and that's how they will learn. Also make it so the instance syncs your gear to a set value so your gear litterally has no effect.

Same for healers (also add a dps check for both tanks and healers so it's clear they should dps well too).

Some may never pass this instance, but that would just be evidence they shouldn't be allowed to tank or heal with PUGs.

I mean, it could be anything, so long as it includes exposure to same stuff would see over the missing levels on, say, another tank (an earlier-level one, to be clear) -- solo-instance, Halls of the Journeyman, whatever, so long as it's got the stuff.

My gut instinct tells me this is a troll wanna be...new player but have 400 hours of gaming...hmmmm

But I will indulge...Gunbreaker starts at 60 with default gear at ilevel 170 I believe which makes you over geared for all level 50 dungeons. If you have done the many instances as you said thane you have had to seen other tanks pulling more mobs when over geared. Big thing though if your legit "NEW" gotta tell people right away don't wait until x wipes and last boss. Its ok to be new, everyone was at some point but not communicating gives the expectation to others you know what you are doing and how to best play your job.

Problem is gunbreaker starts at 60. So when you run any dungeon people assume you know how to tank unless you speak up and say you are new to tanking withing the first 30s of the dungeon. Because by lvl 60 players usually have a good understanding of the game.

If we are in a lvl 60 dungeons and you are pulling adds one by one you are either a bot or dont know what you are doing. So make sure you let people know you are new

Regardless of your age or opinion, you played poorly and were ridiculed for it. Crappy people will always exist. You shouldn't need to be told that unless you're 12(and if this was CoD)

And if this is you playing the way you want, yes, unfortunately you are gonna be ridiculed a lot more. Just don't go around screaming playstyle at everything you disagree with. Because pulling less than standard is not a 'style' of play.

People are finding every reason to add to this topic of a 400 hour level 80 DPS trying another role. Just let this thread die off.

You cant really be angry at them when you realize how many there are legitimate bots running duty finder.
A lot of them are playing exactly how you would play by pulling each group at time.
Not having a sprout icon next to your nick also contributes to the thing you experienced, since everyone expect from you some level of knowledge and skill when joining a duty, especially at lvl 60 with stormblood dungeons where pulling wall to wall is a standard everyone is expecting from a tank.

If you dont like tanking well its your own choice, try out healers or other dps, jumping into tanking so early is not going to make it easy for you. :f
Also you should expect to see "wow behaviour" more often the more players from that game come over to this game, you are a wow player yourself and complain about others being wow players? How does that work lol.
Be nice to others so others could be nice to you and communicate with them, thats all.

I always inform the group that I'm new to tanking a particular dungeon if that is the case (I've played since ARR launch, so while the dungeons aren't new, the tanking is a much different ballgame than dps'ing more often than not). Having done my due diligence and if I'm confident in my gear and hear no objections from the healer, I will typically YOLO and pull the first 2 packs, using CDs as necessary (usually the case cuz I have crap gear as a leveling tank sometimes), and yes - sometimes we wipe. But in those situations I don't recall ever getting criticized for that - I will apologize (tho usually the healer apologizes first), then pull a bit more slowly with no complaints. I usually look at the party comp too - do we have good AOE classes? Is our healer a sprout/returner? Party chat exists for a reason, so I don't understand why people don't just communicate to prevent these kinds of issues. And like others have said, it is a multi-player game, so while it is true you have a right to play as you like, keep in mind others' play experience is affected as well (my how this echoes some of today's societal events....). In the end:

If you are uncomfortable with playing your class and you emediatly jump into semi high lvl content then you should expect to get some form of feedback.

There are tools out of dungeons that will assist you in getting more familiar with your role and to a certain extent your core class abilities.

Not only that, if its a matter of not knowing what your abilities do then you can always read them and check out how they combo on top of each other on the dummy.

And from what I'm reading, you picked an advanced tanking class in a dungeon role you are unfamiliar with straight into mid/high level content. To be fair, I'd be anoyed as well since I expect to queue 50/60/70 with people who have at least a basic understanding of their role and class.

I'm usually a patient person but players who feel entilted to "play their own way" and waste 3/7 other players their time in the process are just toxic.

OP has a strange philosphy of things. I think he is just messing with people in the forum to troll. I only play tank class and never experienced anything like this. I always ask the group if they want me to try bigger pulls and then proceed if so.

Probably the most direct request I ever got from a healer was as soon as the gate drops the healer said one(1) word: All.
