New BLM spells in 5.0 Speculation

So. Do they go up to Fire 5 and Blizzard 5? I'm thinking that since the LB3 is Meteor BLM will either get Comet or Ultima at some point... maybe both... I see Ultima as a "This is the end of the game expansion spell" tho so... My money's on Comet.

Also I kinda wish they would rename the Fire and Blizzard spells. I think Fire 2 should be Fira, thus making Fire 3 > Fire 2 and Fire 4 > Fire 3. same for Blizzard. Thunder should get the same treatment where the AoE moves are the -ara and -aga versions while the single target ones are just 1 and 2.

Also Freeze is supposed to be an Ancient magic like Flare so I kinda wish it was a better spell to use... like maybe make Blizzard 2 a target AoE instead of a AoE centered around you that combo's into Freeze?

OH and just had a thought, since we are becoming the Warrior's of Darkness do you think there is a chance we get the spells Demi or Dark?

i just wish they would make new fire a split spell called fira firage etc

I always thought that caster LB2 was Comet... I could be wrong though.

Edit: I was actually thinking of the appearance of Meteor in FF8. Starstorm reminds me of that. My mistake!

Yeah it's called Starstorm, it's more like a rain of comets than a single one which is what I imagine they were thinking. Although that's where LB3 comes in to it with BLM's Meteor...

I don't know... I wondering if we'll actually go back to having a rotation. Right now, it's all about how many times we can push Fire IV while moving around and not losing Enochian and replenishing mana.

I hope they'll remove the Enochian Button and just make Fire III and Blizzard III automatically apply it as a buff once you're level 52.

What are your thoughts on Drain? I feel like it should be a BLM only spell in 5.0 that allows them some survivability when solo. It needs to be more powerful but I'm not sure how you do that without making it OP with their infinite mana. Having a Cool down maybe?

I'm thinking a Thunder 5 spell that can only be used during Enochian and with a Thundercloud proc, Fire 6 and Blizzard 6 to replace Fire 2 and Blizzard 2 respectively, and a cooldown that makes your next two or three Fire 3 spells cost no MP. Not too sure they'd want to touch the current single-target rotation so much.

One adjustment I could see is whenever Enochian active Fire I and Blizzard I upgrade into Fire/Blizzard IV. Maybe see Fire/Blizzard II get an upgrade (maybe be the level V version?)

I'm guessing you haven't looked at translations before. Spells are like fire/fira/firaga/firaja/ect in some other languages. But in English for SOME reason they have it as Fire/2/3/4. Don't know why they keep jumping between the numbers and having a suffix added to spells.

The issue with that is that right now Fire I refreshes astral, Fire IV does not.

I've always hated Foul simply because of it's name. Powerful spell tho.

I also wish Thunder and Foul were oGCD abilities. Even if they had CDs to make them not OP. I feel like I'm loosing out on Fire 4 casts to do Thunder procs and Foul procs.

With the advent of Dancer, there will be very few reasons for bringing a caster outside of progression raiding, and during prog you're taking RDM or SMN, not BLM.

There's a book in gubal library that explains some lore explanation. The reason iirc was the spells used to be called Cure, Cura, Curaga, but when a more powerful form of Curaga was invented, there was a debate on what it should be called, and they decided all the options sounded silly/ not grand enough, and if ever a spell was invented even stronger, it would be even more ludicrously named, so they swapped to a number based system for convenience, and so it was clear what was stronger than what.

Outside of Lore, I'm assuming they thought as in the western translations of some of the older games had numeric magic upgrades, the west would prefer it, but as the same time we've had more games with suffixes than numbers so its not like its a common trend

They gave a reason why they use the number system in English, compared to the more "traditional" system. To a degree it makes sense, but also it doesn't make sense. If we knew what the material system was like on the German and French clients, that might shed some light for us, since that was an example they gave. Also, while it's not impossible, given how the spell system seems to work, along with the traditional Japanese system, seeing a spell greater than IV/Ja seems unlikely. There are a Sa and Da suffix, but they are usually lower tiered when/if they appear in a game.

That entry in the library was a tongue-in-cheek reference to their actual real world reasoning for making the western versions of those spells follow a number pattern instead of the suffix style many were familiar with from XI and other games. But the primary reason was to keep it simple for newer audiences that may never have played FF let alone MMOs before. But personally I think it just causes confusion for some of the intended audience.

To the point of new BLM stuff though, I would definitely like some form of Thunder nuke that perhaps depends on procs much like BRD's Refulgent Arrow.

As long as they make the class more mobile and less tied to a strict timer I don't care, meteor, ultima or whatever.

I do know that in final fantasy brave exvius they have level 5 and 6 versions of Cure called Curada and Curaja, though the black mage spells are a bit different. They do have ja spells for black magic, but the da spells seem to be white magic only, while some of the Black magic spells have numerals added to them with the suffix on them as well.

also higher cureage is Cureja so that is stupid if they put that in a book lol

I just checked the book, one of the options mentioned was curaja, but council of ampadori magi said it sounded dumb so moved to numbers.

If you're using a proper BLM rotation, you should not be losing a Fire 4 cast for either of those procs.
