Tokyo Fan Fest - Only keynote to be translated

I was at Paris Fan Fest and found it pretty amazing that the whole thing was available in English, and probably most of it understandable for Japanese people too while being live streamed on Twitch.

Why isn’t the Tokyo Fan Fest available wholly in English on livestream?
The fact that the key note is being translated makes me feel like Square Enix just don’t want to deal with the expense.
Heck, I’d be happy to pay $5 to watch the Tokyo Fan Fest in English and I suspect I’m not alone.

What do you guys think about this?

The Europe Fan Fest was in English because it was being held in Europe. They couldn't very well have the thing in Japanese while it's being held in Europe.

But since Tokyo Fan Fest is being held in Tokyo, there's really no need for them to have English for anything but the keynote. The attendees are going to be 99% Japanese, with maybe a small number of foreigners. So it really doesn't make sense to translate the side panels.

Later, when the side panels are available online, I'm sure some FF fan will translate them (and I think they often post summary translations here on the forums). I've done a bit of translating as well, if I have the time.

There’s no reason S-E couldn’t translate the side panels on stream is what I’m saying.

Obviously they’re not going to translate it live for a predominantly Japanese audience.

An MMO game is a worldwide game, trying to communicate with as wide an audience as possible is always a good idea.

Except the whole thing is being live-streamed online to a worldwide audience. I kinda understand why generic live letters aren't translated given their small scale, but this is a Fan Fest.

I actually dont understand the lack of official translations on things being delivered to the community as a whole.

At this point, more people playing 14 speak English than any other language, and they employ people for that purpose.

Live translation takes time, more than anything. They will have to interrupt speaking to let translator speak the same thing just in different language. That interrupts the flow and takes away from what they are able to present.

The Live-Stream is there, yes, but who exactly told you that it's "for you"?! It may be for the Japanese that could not attend the Fan Fest, and you are just allowed to latch on.

Just wait for the translation or depend on the fan translations. Live translations are not only inaccurate but interfere with the event.

Because it was for the Japan community, which is about 1/3 of the whole playerbase of this game.
A translation would be really terrible, its difficult to translate from japanese to english on the fly.

I mean, a Keynot is not random speech, it's a set of bullet points. You can prepare an English version for this in advance and deliver at the same time it like they did for Las Vegas and Paris.

Only the keynote's are going to be translated live? Sounds fine to me... Only the keynotes really matter that much. To me anyway.

Oh. I just read the thing. It says on a separate channel. Wonder if that means at the same time or after. Seems odd that they would do live translations for NA and EU but not JP when they made the point of making the streams free. Maybe they just have a lot to say and having to wait for the translations would take to much time that hey don't have to schedule. The power points normally have english on them anyway at least lol.

Eh, just leave the translating up to someone in the community. Chances are someone will be on top of it on the reddit forums.

If that were the case, they could just have someone come out and give the keynote in English (at NA/EU events), while Yoshi stands and smiles at them. I personally don't mind the "flow being interrupted" if it's done professionally. Koji and Yoshi are a good team on stage.

So long as the key details are translated, I'll be content. There's a high chance that the minor details will be translated by members of the community who are fluent in Japanese either immediately or within a matter of hours.

Welp, it's free other than the in person only concerts and this is how they usually do things anyway. Live letters aren't really live translated either unless they are abroad like at E3/fanfest or something.

Would have been nice to have a translator for the dev panel at least, but the rest of the stuff seems to be mostly fluff. They might just translate the slides and call it a day.

IMO it would be neat to see Koji Fox, Foxclon, or Aimi running a presentation for the English speaking community whenever there is one in Japanese (which I would argue is /massive/, our EU friends who don't use English as their first language tend to have a decent bank of words to fall back onto as well). Anyway, they could use whoever is at the office and can speak both languages (and therefore in the know of what can and can't be said without having to give them a huge binder of catch up).

Those three seem to do well on the stage but I'm sure it takes hours to prep and so they may feel it's not the best use of their time, but if it's possible to be done it would be pretty nice. Make sure Yoshida guest stars occasionally though, to keep his face active as leader - even if Koji becomes more of our English daddy lol. Rather than two separate times it could always be Koji Fox "reaction" haha, where we're not live at the same pace but he has the live feed sent to him so he can pause, rewind, etc, to make comments/translate and manipulate it on the side as he talks over it via greenscreen or side by side.

Bit of an aside but it would be neat to see little community events after each presentation, a bit like Warframe I suppose. Whether in game or out, just a sort of community tool to get more people in on the presentations and with each other (puzzles and riddles in the presentation or an event in the game later, etc).

Yup. It seems like by not making the information translated so everyone can know, they are shooting themselves in the foot a bit. Also often times fan translated things are wrong, which leads to misinformation being spread, and then disappointment eventually when its released and nothing like "they promised at the fanfest!"

They didn't make live translation for the NA and EU streams. They made live translation for the guests on the premises. And that was simply streamed live. They went to a foreign country with mostly foreign spectators paying for actual tickets to see them. They could not ignore the translation for the people at the venue.

But with the next Fan Fest in Japan, the entire audience is expected to know Japanese so no on-venue translation is needed. Even if there are foreign guests as well (there surely will be), some of them will know Japanese all the same (most people simply wouldn't go there otherwise).

And the remaining few?! Sorry, but the concept is the same as in EU. There was no German, French, Spanish, Polish, Danish etc. translations for the EU Fan Fest even if it was in France. If you want to see some foreign event held in some foreign country (or internationally)...it's on you to learn the universal language in the area. In Europe English is the most universal as it's taught across all the countries plus it's the primary language in England and Ireland, plus a very strong second language in numerous others. In Japan...it's Japanese. It's as simple as that.

Flow being interrupted means that less information is being given in the same amount of time. Not only is the information given repeated an additional time, but the in-between and the translation process itself (the translator needs to "translate" it in their head due to different way that phrases are built in the two languages, if nothing else).

As a result, to match the same duration, the information is condensed and some is omitted. What's worse, the more information is condensed and omitted, the easier it is to make a mistake while translating something.

So yeah, flow is actually a lot more important that "I can understand only half of what they're saying".

Well, you may still say that you don't mind it being interrupted...you're free to do so. But clearly Square Enix chose the practical option.

Did you actually look at the posts after key notes and live letters?! Do you know how many people were spreading misinformation about something that was clearly written and translated properly, just cause they cannot read fully?!

The people that spread misinformation from fan translations often are the ones that have difficulty with reading comprehension, a problem that affects huge chunks of humanity. Functional illiteracy is a thing, you know, and that's only for those most severe cases. There are countless more that make frequent mistakes when reading even if they can do so with some degree of accuracy in general. No amount of on-the-fly translation (which is AS PRONE to mistakes as fan translations) is going to prevent that.

Look at forum posts and comment sections. How often do you see an exchange similar to this:
MR.A: "I like Big Bad because he shows us how to make a well written character. I hope to see him in the sequel if it'll ever be made."
MR.B: "Big Bad is not good, he's evil! Did you even watch the show? And no one said there will be sequel either, don't lie to people!"

The above exchange may be just an example...but I've seen even more obvious cases of illiteracy of people that "can" read and write (type) "on paper".

Fair point. And honestly as long as the slides continue to have English on them it doesn't matter to me personally. Also the Reddit Discord has some wonderful translators that do a really good job with live letters. Not sure if they are doing it for the JP Keynote.

Please. That's like saying they are completely oblivious to the fact that a large portion of people watch it on stream. Why bother with the streaming then, if they don't care that those people will watch it? Why even advertise that it will be streamed?

For Stormblood's festivals they actually charged people to watch it, and still did Japan's show like they're planning to do this one. It was, to put it nicely, a very bad secondary show; two people having a chat while ignoring half of what was being said on stage. If I remember correctly, they basically just waited for the slides to come up, and read them out loud.

Streaming is a moot point. They know they have a streaming audience watching, and should cater to it. Money doesn't seem to be a factor either. We get the same show regardless.

Your argument of "interrupting the flow" is moot as well. All they need to do is plan a little more time for the translations. Which they'd do anyway for two of the shows. They can fit in as little or as much information as they want to. Translations are not what cut the NA/EU shows short. They were cut short because that's all the information they wanted to give.

The simple fact is they have a large Japanese-speaking audience, and a large English-speaking audience. They provide Japanese at all three shows; English only two. Yes, there are other languages tossed in the mix, but they should at least cater to the largest two. This is the last show, where the "meat" is shown and talked about. The translation shouldn't be a separate show, or side act. We shouldn't have to open discord or reddit to get translations on the fly. SE should handle it in the main show.

I would think that a translated keynote can be prepared more easily in advance than "unplanned" conversations (panels, Q&A, etc.) than need to be translated as they unfold.

Synchronise the scripts, make sure the English presenter can keep to the same pace as Yoshida, and a live simultaneous English keynote should be quite doable without having to hold up the actual speech to provide piece-by-piece translation for a secondary audience.

For that matter, I think that should be done with the Live Letters as well, although perhaps they don't want to have a permanent "English counterpart" to Yoshida who steals all his glory in the English side of the fandom.

I think if they could take the feed, perhaps locally even (so you're not streaming a stream lol), and then give them their own room nearby that they could then "dub" over with some relative ease (talking in the background, with the ability to PiP/switch screens). Pause, rewind, lower and raise volume (to talk over things).

Might allow for less pressure? If you have Koji you might be able to drip lore in and around the open periods too lol, or label some more fish XD.

As funny as the fish-naming thing was, I was disappointed that it took up such a big chunk of the lore panel. There were so many interesting things in the "submit your questions" topic, and a lot of them got passed over.

Certainly they could do other things too, it was just an aside "our presentation doesn't have to be just a dub" hehe. I agree there could be some really fun questions added (or other things to do, maybe we could design an NPC :D).

Like in between moments there could be rapid fire lore questions (of things he can answer). Also if they have two presenters then while one interacts the other could be preparing their translation (assuming what said isn't known before hand, as you said some presentations are probably nearly scripted already).

I guess the only reason I care is because of the info dump breakdown. That so many things I'm interested in (job changes, new jobs etc) will only be addressed in the jp fanfest means I won't be able to understand the changes first-hand. It wouldn't be the first time I watched a wholly jp broadcast and just kept up via twitch translation though.

They can do what they like, of course. Just feels like "appealing to region specific fans" is a contrasting goal to "advertising Shadowbringers features piecemeal" which I feel fanfest is trying to do.

Then you don't have to worry. The Keynote speech, which is where Yoshida will cover all the new stuff you care about, will be translated in English more or less live on a separate channel.

The off main stage things will just be side discussions. All the important info will be in the keynote speech.

As I said above, what makes you think it's streamed "for you"?! The venue is limited in size. There are countless Japanese that would be interested in seeing it but can't be there physically. So these Japanese will be able to watch the stream. And since they have no reason whatsoever to limit it to ONLY Japanese, anyone around the world can watch it too.

You're saying that it's like they're oblivious to the stream watchers, but they're not. They're also not oblivious to all the fan translations done during the event.

You clearly have no idea about planning. That's all the information they planned to give because they planned for translation so they limited the information to give out for the shows to accommodate it. They still have the same amount of information to give over the three shows. If they cannot offer more in NA and EU Fan Fests due to translation, they need to fit more into the Japanese one. If they had to cut it short for translations as well, they would be unable to reveal all the information that's out there and players would complain "Where is x! Why didn't you talk about y!".

Why not largest three?! Four?!

They provide Japanese on all three because...this is a secret so don't spread it too much...the development team is mainly Japanese and doesn't know English. What a surprise, right?! Don't snitch on me telling you though!

Seriously though, you're mistaking a necessity with a business decision. It's not possible for a largely non-English speaking team to provide information in English without first providing it in whatever language they speak. And that just happens to be Japanese. If the developers spoke only Korean that would be the language they use. Simple as that.

Japanese is a lot more complex language than most other. That's why translating anime, manga or games from Japanese to English can take so long. It's very easy to make translation errors, even in speech. Then there's the different construction of their phrases which is always a problem with translating on the fly between two disconnected languages.

It is possible to translate on the fly, yes...like every language...but it is difficult to do it both fast and accurately.

They normally have English in the text below Japanese so we'll get the gist of whats being said when they present it. I mean I understand the frustration but this doesn't seem like too huge of an issue

I think all events, fan-fests and live-letters should be hosted in Chinese. That is, after all, probably the largest audience.

An actually trained translator sole job is to do translations on the fly you know that, right? Have you ever listened in on the UN or the EU? A trained professional translator can translate as a person speaks and usually only has a topic sheet. If a translator can translate a politicians tirade in the EU, I am more than certain that they can for a fanfest MMO that can feasibly give them material that can prep them on what they will be revealing. It would not be difficult for a professionally trained translator even if it is Japanese. The live stream should have this option. I can understand if the event does not have it, but there is really no reason that the livestream does not have this feature.

1) Not to nitpick, but that is an interpreter, not a translator.

2) Interpreters also usually have prepared memos with what the person speaking is intending to say. It is never comprehensive, but enough to allow the interpreter some shortcuts. (point of note, for the Paris FF, they had scripts of what was going to be said).

3) Professional interpreters are EXPENSIVE. I should know, I'm in the business myself (though not to the level of interpreter, I just do translation).

3a) There's no reason to pay the exhorbitant cost of interpreters for the Tokyo Fan Fest. They are going to be providing English translation for the Keynote, which is all that is necessary. The side panels are really not important and will be translated eventually anyway.

A professional game developers job is to program a game that works, yet there are bugs all over most of them nowadays.

Read what you quoted. I didn't say it's not possible. I said that it requires more thought than many other language combinations and thus normally either takes longer or is less accurate.

You are comparing languages which are similar to one another or to English, with a language that is from the other side of the world and is entirely different?! It's like comparing a sauce from a jar with a home-made sauce from fresh ingredients. Both are the same thing and preparing both is called cooking, but the former is far easier to do.

There is simply no comparison. Implying that on-the-fly translation between Japanese and English is as easy as between English, Spanish, German, Polish etc. is just naive.

Yeah, our syntax and grammar structure is different so you have to reorder the things you've heard on top of changing the language.

I bet Japanese to Korean and probably the other way would be a really smooth experience though, they've got a lot of similarities, almost like what you might feel from English and Spanish and other "western" languages. Similar order, syntax, and sometimes pronunciations, with a very old relative relationship to each other through Chinese.

Probably why you see the interpreters pause a bit longer on these languages though (English / Japanese) lol, have to hear more of the sentence before being able to recreate it?

That said I don't think people need 0 second delay translations, so I still believe SE could achieve a smooth English presentation - especially if they had two presenters (Koji, Aimi, Foxclon seem like they might be able to face that challenge). One presenter talking about the previous thing, or interacting (like lore questions peppered in), while the other is working on the currently said item.

On another line of thought.. Did/does Blizzard do any sort of translating service for it's community? I don't think SE should scoff at the idea as we're a huge part of their customer base (there are more English speakers than Japanese speakers), and clearly they don't because we get some translations pretty quickly/early already, but I was just curious if SE is in their own sort challenge world because i'm not sure this happens else where.

You can watch Blizzcon streams in:

English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Portugese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and Thai. And limited content in Polish and Turkish.

Theres really no reason to not expect translations for the common language of 65% of their playerbase for events like this, including the regular live letters.

Is that afterwards or live even? And does it include the whole dev presentation or just the intro? Very impressive selection if live lol.

I tried some google searches which suggested they translate the entire event, like.. all of it. But youtube didn't really reveal any videos which is either because of copyright strike city or maybe its not true.

However - I just went to their blizzcon website, and it appears even their news caster/interviews are being dubbed (but I can't tell if that happened live or later).

Though I still don't know if that's done live or not, could be added later. Do you know if those options are up at the time of live (still counts even if its just delayed a little lol).

It might be on a short delay, but you can select all the stream options on their website to watch "live".
