Let's not be too hard on SE about BLU and in general.

Whatever our thoughts about eureka, "limited jobs" etc.. I think Naoki Yoshida and the rest of the Square Enix team working on this game really do try and make us as happy as they can with it.

You can't please everyone at once with every piece of content though and that's why there exists parts some people dont like and some others do. Becuase of different wants for each player.

Some may be absolute masochists and demand more ultimate content or that everything be made harder, some may want a mix of challenge and easy so they can choose based on their mood, some dont like having 30+ buttons and some want MORE buttons.

SE is trying as hard as they can to make the most people happy and thats a delicate balancing act, so whatever we think about their decisions lets not be too rude.

I do agree that we should always be respectful towards the dev team and Yoshida.

However, I believe feedback should be provided and listened to.

Many times the players gave feedback that proved correct and justified. Remember Monk, Whm and Drk when 4.0 released ? It was bad, and the players base knew it. Many threads were made, many complaints were made too, even before release. The dev team didn't aknowledge this feedback at first, then realized the playerbase was right, and started to work on fixes. And don't get me started on Pagos...

What I mean is, yes the dev team is doing its best. But they need to listen to player base more, and maybe start to think about creating a PTR server. Some problems should have been avoided, because we had some really, really bad game design decisions, which one wouldn't expect from a subbription based MMO. And the latest to date are Blue Mage and the new DC in EU and NA, and both completly killed the hype for 5.0.

Listening doesn't always mean something needs to be done or done exactly as it's been asked, yes feedback is important and listening to it is also important but there's a difference between listening and not acting on and ignoring.

There are a bunch of people who think savage is a waste of time and shouldn't be made, should SE listen to them and remove it? Or those who think PvP is a waste of resources and should just be scrapped or that Eureka was beyond saving and should just be removed.
Using Eureka as an example they didn't just scrap Eureka despite the "outcry" they made adjustments in response to peoples complaints Pagos missed the mark and they tried too hard focusing on complaints that the train made it boring but with Pryos they listened and dialled a lot back, moved the dragons to one side, increased the xp gains e.c.t.

Just because they don't do what we may want doesn't mean they ignore us, not every idea we have is great, and we're also not one voice, we're many voices asking for often conflicting things, some people hate what BLU will be, some like it, others are indifferent, some want small changes, some want massive, colossal overhauling changes, who exactly do they listen to?

We also need to think about what feedback we're asking for, BLU and the data centres are likely too far along to be totally scrapped/redone so yelling at them to do so is not them ignoring you, simply being unable to do that, instead we need to focus on asking for things more likely to be possible/considered.

We also need to take into consideration when providing feedback that we simply don't know enough, we don't know where they intend to take BLU, will it ever be at cap? Are any of it's current limits planned to be relaxed?
Are they planning any kind of cross data centre interaction in the future? We just don't know and we need to take into account as well when we ask for things.

You are missing "for me." at the end of this post. Because without it, your wording indicates that the 5.0 hype is dead for everyone, which it certainly is not.

I couldn't be more excited for 5.0 or 4.5 for that matter. The idea of BLU in FF14 never meant that much to me, it would just be another job for me to test out and level up (I'm a completionist in that sense) but it would have been the same as any other job they introduced. The way they are implementing it now, with the new idea of "limited" jobs, has me much more intrigued than a normal job would have. I can't say if I'll end up liking it or not as I haven't tried it yet, but I am eager to give a whirl.

I get that others have differing opinions and that's cool, but it doesn't mean that either of us is right or wrong. Which I guess is the point- SE can't do both so they are going to always end up angering one side or other. Doing something you don't like doesn't automatically mean they are ignoring you. It just means they opted to go a different direction.

(PTR server is something I would totally get behind though.)

Blue mages being able to learn their magic from monsters > Blue mages learning their abilities from just leveling
Beastmasters able to charm monsters as pets > Beastmasters reduced to summoning mini monsters pets like summoner

I'd rather play these as limited jobs that still have their core identity than if they had lost them. Don't let them nerf Blue Mage like they did to summoner to get it to "fit in".

The thing is, it's locked at lvl 50. Why play BLU in the lvl 50 overworld when your lvl 70 characters can kill everything in one or two hits. Why go lvl 50 BLU in PF duties when most people unsync them in. BLU may be fun to play and collect abilities on, but once you have, it's almost useless. That's my gripe with it.

That's true but level 50 is not permanent. We just know it's 50 on release and planned to be higher some time thereafter. How fast will they update it and by how much remains to be seen. If the idea is for it to never catch up to the cap of other jobs then this complaint is valid since yes we could just clear unsync duties and hunts faster on different jobs. At that point it's only for fun at the cost of efficiency unless some spells are super OP like a high success rate of Death.

Q: I love the blue mage job that appears in the FINAL FANTASY series. Will the blue mage job ever be implemented in FFXIV?

A: I think that blue mage is an interesting job because you can learn spells from enemies, but honestly I don't think that it really fits MMORPG party settings. If anything, I think it would work solo and it would be really fun to implement it as a job where you go around and learn abilities from every monster, so I'd definitely like to try and do this, but I'm concerned when it comes to playing in a party players would put up barriers if you haven't learned certain abilities. Additionally, in the event you are able to use abilities forever once you learn them, the difficulty of learning abilities would be high, and we wouldn't be able to balance the system so it wouldn't revolve around procuring your abilities instead of equipment. This wouldn't be practical enough to fit in an MMORPG party setting and conversely if you are swapping in only certain abilities you've learned, the true image of a blue mage would diminish, so this is something that I am concerned with.

From September, 2014 by the way. Yoshida was true to his word and made Blue Mage a solo job. I guess 4 years wasn't enough time for this to sink in for some people.

The dev team has said things they never lived up to and went back on other things they said. I'd sooner be disappointed that in four years, they haven't been able to come up with a version of BLU that would actually work with the game they're developing. Especially since all their restrictions so far are from their own creation.

On one hand it's cool they're willing to make something buff and apparently different enough it'd break the game, but shouldn't that go into it's own little game? Lets call it FF Blues Cool and make it a stand alone product.

On the other hand I was getting super hyped hearing Blue Mage and then all that energy went poof outta me hearing "limited job", "level 50 capped", "no duty finder", etc. I don't know guys, this is an mmo, when you pick up a class you expect it to be fully playable in all the games content, not just in a small selection of it off on the side to be done when you're bored.

Personally, though I'll see what its about when it gets patched in, I'd sooner have no BLU mage at all than a limited one. It'd have been better to put the resources spent on this BLU on a different job that wouldn't be so limited imo.

I'll be hard on them because I believe they can do better than how they made things sound during the live letter. I could understand and be totally fine if they said they were working on a project with some details of what it actually is but did not give us an estimated patch it would be done and we were just asked to be patient.

Why level another job when you already have your main lvl 70 and can do every content with it ? Because it's fun to play something different for a while, especially right before a new expansion, a time period where new content is the most scarce.

I am sorry but SE is not our friend, we dont get this game for free. We are paying for this monthly (+expansions) and thus as a customer have the right to complain.

As long as posters are not directly insulting people they have the right to complain and post about this. You dont need to like the complain, thats fine but your post sounds like we should stop criticism just because they are working on the game and content.

Have nobody complain about things they dont like and they might introduce the x. version of the content again and again while more people will simply stop playing and at the end they will stand there and say: Nobody complained so we thought that people like it..which depending on how much people they lost this could even be bad for all those that still enjoy the game.

They have stated more than once that a complaint is worth much more than a compliment, because then they can know if something is not good. Then they can react towards it and make it better. Otherwise they will just lose more and more people without knowing why which is the worst for a company that wants to earn money.

Thus no we should not stop complaining, we should do it in a nice way without insults but I see far more good and thought out posts then those that are just insulting.

(And sorry if Eureka over all languages and over so many different sites is seen as mostly bad then its not about "this is just not content for you" but more like "this is probably bad content for many". And lets remember, without complaints we would still have that horrible "greed only" rule in the 24 mans..)

Ok...

Here's the thing, why on earth would a game designer purposefully design a class that is broken? Now, don't get me wrong, I know it's easy to do that, I've done it myself, but you don't just stop there when designing. You look at your monster, take a step back, and tweak it so it's not broken while maintaining the feel you want it to have. Seriously, take a look at even Black Mages. They managed to present them as a class and yet where are all their instant death spells? Those spells appear in other FF games starting with the first one, so why not here? Hmm, probably because they're too OP and defeat the feel and nature of a MMO style game they were putting the class in.

This is an MMO not a single player game. All classes should be able to play together at will. No class should be banned from content because it's OP/broken. It should be designed to be playable in all the content.

Unless they're going to change direction on what they've shown I really doubt BLU will be level 80 and allowed in all content in 5.0; it'll be 6.0+ before we see level 80 BLU given what's been said thus far.

BLU as is isn't even a class, it's really just a mini-game. How's that not twisting and gimping it?

I like Blue Mage, but then again, I don't think I have expectations for it either.

One thing I think needs to be appreciated is the passion, no matter your position. If people didn't love this game, or love their communities, or love this series, there wouldn't be the outrage. There'd be a quiet "huh".

Blue Mage, Enemy Skill, Lore or whatever the name is, in every game you have freely access to the skills it was always broken. And, like Yoshi-P said, it's part of what make Blue Mage fun.

Sure, they removed one or two instant death spells. It doesn't fundamentaly change the class (Especially since Death is usually a very high level spell, and we're still "only" lvl 70). How many staple Blue Magic would you have to remove to make BLU fit into a single spot in the holy trinity, and at that point, would it still really be worthy of the Blue Mage title ?

In most games, Summoner is basically a flashier and more powerful Black Mage (And when its not, it frequently plays as a solo job when it summons something), so they had two options :

• Make it flashier and more powerful Black Mage...but then, what's the point of Black Mage ?
• Make it something else so that both jobs are totally different, even if it means ignoring the SMN archetype.

They did the second, and people are still upset by it, even though SMN is a fairly strong job in the game. They did the same choice for DRK, that has really not much ties in its previous incarnations. They did the same for RDM, probably because a "master of none" has no place in an MMO. So, this time, they said "No ! We need to stick to what Blue Mage is, even if it means changing the rules".

Blame the playerbase. In every BLU thread, you had people saying that they would glagly kick someone who didn't make the effort to learn every skill there is, whatever the difficulty or the randomness behind. There, now, you can't kick a BLU.

They didn't say anything about how BLU will be treated in the future. The level 50 cap is not there by accident, it's because it's the level cap for the base game. If they only wanted BLU not breaking current content, it would be released with lvl 60 cap. And since SB came with HW, we can assume that SH will come with both SB and HW, so if you go beyond lvl50, then you can go up to 80 for the same price. And, again, SH content can de designed with BLU in mind, to limit how much the job will be broken.

In a game where the main complain is the lack of new content and following the same formula, this is new content. And for that alone, it's fare more interesting for me than simply another job that you'll drag in the same old type of content with the exact same turn of events and the exact same rewards.

Well when I read up on Blue mage they seemingly have in common that they get their skills through the monsters they fight but even there how they get it from them is quite different from each game. So Blue mage in FF14 who would learn certain basics skills for duty content by taking on quests to kill certain monsters and get certain skills from them would still be like other blue mages just with a quest marker as the guide line. (And seemingly it was not all the time OP either.)

The death skill could also still be in the game but simply either locked for duties or just dont have any effects on them (or less effect on monsters in duties).

So even with some balance the basic of the job which is getting skills from monsters would still be there. You are also even with that limited job limited. ;) Its not like you can go around and get every single monster spell in the game. You might have the ability to copy stuff from monsters but can only have 49 skills at release and can also use 20 of them actively. Thus you are already not 100% a blue mage either because it has restrictions. So why would it be bad if we got one more restriction in form of a certain rotation in duties? Again this would be taken away for solo content and the blue duty. There they could be as overpowered as they want to be.

So that way: New content, still playable in every other relevant content, overpowered in solo play, still has the identity of the job by getting all skills from killing monsters (just some have also quests before that).

They have made quite sure to say that this was a solo job and that you can only do the old duties if you use a premade group because it would otherwise be too strong. How exactly would it make sense for it to reach lvl80 in Shadowbringers? Because if that would be the case it could simply destroy any raiding scene because those endgame raids can be done with premades thus would be content that blue mage can do.

Also why would they design content for the new expansion with blue mage in mind if they stated that its a limited job and solo play. And they have said that one of the reasons they chose to go that way, was the fear that blue mages would be kicked out of duties because they would not have certain abilities. What change other than creating restrictions would change that? And if they use restrictions to make it playable in shadowbringer instanced content then why restrict it at all? Why not release it at lvl 60 and raise it to 70 at the expansion release? Why state that over the 5.x patches they will increase the levels but never said that its going to be max level if that would be that case?

People have become so fixated on FF11's version of BLU (Including the devs it seems), it's the only one with an enormous amount of skills you can choose from. More or less every other version had around 30 and even then you would only use a select few of those, around 10 at best. (Aqua Breath, Death, Needles, Mighty Guard and Goblin Punch for example) as the others were either useless or extremely niche. And sure they were strong, but they were far from OP. In your FF5 example, Blue would usually only be used as a cross-job because it was usually out classed by Samurai or Mystic Knight for example. So the idea that they would be too op for XIV is just silly. So is the argument that they would be like BLM if they were turned into a normal job with a future update. (Apparently using any sort of spells = BLM now?)

I agree feedback is a good thing, it tells the devs the desires of the playerbase. But rude and angry feedback isn't very polite at all. I think everyone falls into that trap once in awhile though.

Unfortunately, I will be as hard on them as required to get legitimate change.

If anything I'll be harder on SE than most other companies because:

They have the talent to do better.

They have the funds to do better.

They supposedly learned lessons from 1.0 so they have no excuse.

This was also after the shockingly tone deafness that was the Diablo team at Blizzcon 2018. This was another time for FFXIV to shine after someone else screwed up and they didn't.

You realize that this has nothing to do with BLU's level cap. Kicking is only an issue in matchmaking, so as long as BLU is excluded from matchmaking, it can end at any level cap. It's also what made me realize that customization could be treated the same.

Oh you still got that sentence before I edited it out but I agree with you, it seems that its a certain version of blue mage even though there were more than one in FF games. Thats why I am saying that the identity of the job is already a given if we simply have the "get spells from monster" part of it which it also could have if its a regular. All the other parts like abilities are something that SE decided on.

I kinda wonder...what would people say if SE puts in the Viera but because they once stated that the feets of the race is a big problem, they now release them with normal feets. Would people be fine with that?

I am still not sure if killing low level mobs that you can already one shot with other high level jobs is really that fun. It might be cool for quite some time but is that really a good long term fun? Also those hard hitting skills like Death are probably not achieveable from the very start so who knows when you will even get those broken skills.

And at the same time they also said that they on one hand cant go into duty because of possible toxic behavior but also because spells like death could just break boss encounters and raids. That is a big sign that they wont be able to do any of the new content at all, otherwise they will break it. They are also 100% excluded by matchmaking because they cant queue up with randoms. The only way to get even into old duties is with premade groups but being able to still do that with new content would still break the game. Could you imagine if they reach 80 somewhere in 5.x and can group up with premade groups for current raids? How would people and even the devs feel if the hardcore content like Savage or even Ultimate is then just destroyed by an army of blue mages? (They could lock certain skills there but again they then could do that for every duty thus could have made him a normal job) So either they coded it differently and people wont be able to queue up with premades on max level or they simply restrict this by not giving them max level. (Restriction of the level is the easiest solution for them)

At the same time can you imagine how bad it would be if they can reach max lvl even without joining duties? They could one shot hunt bosses even in the new zones..they could one shot fate bosses that others might have wanted to participate in. If you give such an overpowered job max level it can do quite some bad things even in open world content.

Its 100% not 80 in 5.0 (only if they go back on their own words) because they have clearly stated that it will be updated in Shadowbringer patches. The expansion itself is not a patch thus it will probably only start with 5.1. Also if they fully planned on making it 80 in Shadowbringer why not state that? Why not simply say that people dont need to worry about it because they will be at max level in the expansion too. Instead they went out of their way to say that it will get updates for its level but that can mean quite a lot.

I wouldn’t say that having an issue with Blue Mage being a solo only job is being too harsh to developers. Maybe if someone was complaining about the weapon they use, their design, their concept for the masked carnivale. But I think it’s a legitimate request to want to be able to use a job with friends. Thankfully I’ve never been particularly interested in Blue Mage, so personally I don’t care much what they do with it

Yes, a lvl-5 death could break all of Alphascape. But, lvl-5 death still doesn't work against creatures with a death immunity. Now that we might have a job with a death spell, we could see ennemies with a death immunity. That's why I said SH can have content designed wih BLU in mind.

One could say that if they didn't intend for BLU to reach lvl 80 in SH, they would also state that to not let people hope in vain. It works both ways. In the end, one shouldn't assume about what they didn't say.

Agreed. Though not necessarily with the implementation of BLU. They have the talent to do better in general with FFXIV. But it is a good thing when there is room to improve.

Why do people who don't work in SE's financial department seem to think they know this? A lot of things factor into overall revenue: Number of employees, wages, overhead costs, maintenance, write-offs, insurance, matched IRA contributions and benefits, financial disputes, utilities, water, safety, keeping their dispensers filled, among a plethora of other things that chip away at that overall revenue for the company. If you know they have the funds; you also know the numbers of the afore mentioned.

This is probably a valid Eureka argument, or anything we have currently in the game where the devs actually have taken steps back. I am not sure how this applies to BLU though? In either case, you are mistaken if you think the FFXIV dev team is or should be devoid of mistakes. That's not how this world spins. They've made them in the past; they're making them now; and they will make more in the future. If you are concerned with BLU because of their mistakes and an ineptitude to rectify them, that would be a very valid argument to make.

We are still excited for 5.0
The data center's situation is a necessary evil to make the experience better in the long run. And i believe its the right move.

However, the limited job is not a good idea or a necessary evil. They are no longer jobs to be excited about. They are the step-child jobs that get stuck in their own corner of the game. Updated from time to time to keep the carrot on the stick for collectors relevant.

Im not against the idea of solo job in general (though i would prefer to main and raid as blu) but being stuck at level 50 and not able to do the new content and all the solo stuff that is locked (high level hunts, deep dungeon, eureka as examples) is the worst part about the limited job concept.

And no, being a feature patched every 3-6 months is not good enough

Agree with all of this except change the solo job to something like freelancer or a unique XIV job. I also like this idea from another poster. "Or to offer ideas - make limited jobs non combat.
Auctioneer. Merchant. Farmer. Caravan Traveller. Performer." This idea would give a lot more open world content and various style of gameplay. A lot more than the limited blu idea.

Honestly? I love this idea, make a class focused around actually exploring the land/talking to unique npc's or something, that gives us more lore details about the world at large, I'd be so up for that.
