It could be really useful to have, especially for players who play at times when most of the ppl are asleep.
For those not familiar with the Trust system. In FFXI, you can gain certain notable NPC's as "Trusts" and summon them in the battlefield as a party member :D.
It's kinda like the Grand Company Squadron, except your collecting famous NPC's as trusts :D and you can summon them anywhere except in towns/cities.
The NPC's strength depends on how notable they are in the storyline and your current ilvl.
It could be useful for Fates, Eureka, Easy Dungeons, Map Parties, Old Savage Dungeons etc :D.

This is probably in the future, though the distant future seeins as trusts were only implemented in 11 when the game got so old and with so few ppl playing that basically no one could ever find help anymore. For me, for now, I'd just be happy with squadron members out in the open world (Even if you could just summon one at a time, and in place of chocobo, it'd still be kind of neat. Though I suppose we'd need to be able to level them to 70 first.)

Well, the Grand Company Squadron and the Chocobo Companion already serve a similar (albiet currently more restricted) role so I don't see this being a good fit. The Trust NPC system was long overdue for FFXI simply because everything in FFXI (and I mean, everything) had been designed around parties and so with a rapidly declining population and the development team winding up the storyline (due to FFXI now well and truly being in it's Indian Summer), something was needed to allow players to be able to progress through the story/dungeons in FFXI, and the Trusts was it.
As most of FFXIV allows easy soloing with party content easily undertaken with the Duty Finder/Party Finder/Raid Finder, something that has never existed in FFXI, Trusts have little reason or need to exist here. Instead, I see the Grand Company Squadron being expanded upon which would fill that niche.
Having said that, I would love to see FFXIV 1.0's Path Companions return in a similar role as an alternative to the Chocobo Companion - I miss my sultry, bisexual moonkeeper kittygirl GLA Imarah. :( -

The Trust system in FFXI is interesting because you get to party up with Notable NPCs. Imagine partying up with Yshtola, Yda, Raubagn, and all the other scions. Or maybe some of the Bad guys on the MSQ. What about those Class job quest giver NPCs :D. Collecting them would sure be fun :D.
FFXI has a lot of systems the FFXIV Dev team should look at :D. -

But you already do party with them on multiple occassions during story instances - besides, the Trust NPCs in FFXI aren't even the real thing lore wise (as in, the player's character doesn't literally summon the real character to fight alongside them), they're just magical clones with virtually no actual will of their own other than pre-programmed dialogue and attack behaviour (I remember a humorous article on the FFXI website not long after the Trust NPCs were first introduced featured a story that among other things depicted Windurst's 'Cat Burglar' Nanna Mihgo encountering her Trust NPC summoned by a tentative player's character, and the end result was the real Nanna did not think too highly of her mindless copy (that just endlessly spouted it's attack dialogue when Nanna tried asking it a question). ;)
Either way, as I mentioned I'd much rather have my Path Companion from FFXIV 1.0 back, or at the very least an expansion on the GC Squadrons, as it would be a natural progression for something that is already in the game. -

I'd rather not see them as they would just be another reason for people in this game to not actually put in effort towards their main jobs or socialize with others to get things done.
"Oh, it's alright! I don't have to play well! The NPC's will take care of me or won't care!"
I really don't want that to be XIV's next future and used as an excuse as to why someone can't do a dungeon properly. -

I'd love for them to flesh out Companions more, but then again they're really only useful at the beginning of an expansion or when leveling low level jobs. Didn't YoshiP say we'd be able to have our magitek as a companion eventually? Sigh...

Its this attitude that's the reason there's witch hunts on innocent people over a game (blugartr for example has a name and shame topic for both FF online games to the point it gets to real life threats on their person/doxxing.) When really just grow up, you'll never see these people in real life. the level 70 "gimps" will ether eventually learn to play better or move on.
Anyway, As much as I and some others would like a trust system XI and XIV's engines are different-- in XI your fellow and trusts "talk" to you, while your chocobo kwehs and you can change their attack styles. (You could change your fellows attack style but not as easy as XIV's chocobo) Trusts are set in stone.
It'd likely take years to implement and even then it's likely to be buggy.
Surprising Aymeric fans have not raided here already to have their beloved elf at their sides:p -

While I think this would be a really neat feature, I don't see it happening. As a previous poster stated, XI was designed so that you had to rely on grouping to accomplish anything and the trust system eased this burden as the population declined. Even should the days come that FFXIV numbers dwindle, I'd say over 80% of this game's content can be done solo, and that might be low-balling it. We also have our chocobo companion to help as we see fit. Also, there was no roulette system when I left XI and this pretty much eliminates the need for trust NPCs as far as progression goes.
If anything, I see them working to develop our squadrons further. I was actually surprised when they lifted their previous level cap of 50, and gated some things behind squadron progression. I thought, much like the companion system, it would be abandoned. It appears they will continue to release dungeons to complete via squads, and they will eventually have to give them access to job stones if they do so. Once they do that, they should be able to release more available dungeons every patch. -

As much as I love the trust system in XI, you have to keep in mind that it was an absolute necessity to help keep the game going. Most players are at end-game levels. As Sigma-Astra mentioned, NPCs don't care if you don't use your skills properly, or if you perform at a half-assed level. Leveling with trusts lets you get away with very sloppy play, and you still progress.
Now, obviously results will vary with the trust system. Perhaps there are some people who treat it like a formal party of old, and do everything as they should, but I imagine a good chunk of the ones leveling with this system put on a video or movie on the side and mindlessly gain XP. I'm one of those people that will not join a group if I feel I feel like I'll drag them down. Not everyone (as XIV proves) thinks like this, and so I think there would be a good amount of people entering into end-game who don't know how to play their jobs. -
