Is the WAR skill Tomahawk affected by dexterity?

Since it is a ranged attack I was wondering if it was effected by dexterity. I wanted to know because most of my gear only has room for dex, int, and mind materia. Strength and vitality are already maxed out. Each available stat seems completely useless to the WAR but Tomahawk is used a good amount by warriors to pull aggro. So if dexterity would improve tomahawk, it would be helpful.

Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence and Mind are basically just reskins of the same stat. Your job has one of them as its primary and increasing it increases your power, increasing the others does absolutely nothing.

Personally, seeing as they are all the same anyway, I hope they scrap them in 5.0 and just replace them with one stat called Power or something.

Now I'm wondering - is the tooltip for the stats really that bad in english? The german one for dexterity clearly stats that it only affects the damage dealt by the weapons of archers, bards and maschinists...

In general though: Each class has their mainstat and thats the only one that counts (from the mainstats).
And since the mainstats are almost always maxed out on gear, you want to meld substats like crit, direct hit, determination, skill/spell speed, piety, tenacity.

As war you want to meld Crit, det and DH - I believe currently in this order.

Mainstat-materia is pretty useless - outside of tanks melding strength into their accessories and some people melding vit during early savage progression to survive raid-aoes.

It doesn't. In this game stats are pretty much separated not by what the action does but by what class is using the action; for instance, PLD's Clemency, despite being a healing spell, is still governed by strength. If you're not an archer, rogue, or machinist, dexterity is completely useless to you.

Offensive spells used to be universally governed by intelligence, even for healers, which is why they originally would use Cleric Stance to swap their much-higher mind score with their low intelligence score, temporarily sacrificing their ability to heal well in return for being able to do more than mere scratch damage. This concept was dropped in Stormblood; the MND/INT swapping aspect of Cleric Stance was removed, and now mind simply governs all spells used by healers, both restorative and offensive.

Unless they're going to return to when Primary stat distribution, albeit focused on a single stat per job, held the same customization function as secondary stats -- revisable to potentially greater variance even while remaining balanced than our current Secondary Stats, actually -- that seems the logical choice. You'd just have Attack Power or Spell Power, based on job, your Vitality, and your secondary stats. (Though, by that ticket, Direct Hit, Tenacity, and Piety could also be each discarded without any negative impact to gameplay...)

Defence, Power, Vitality, smattering of substats and materia slots.

Basically what we have now, just... neater.

Yeah, there's some pitfalls, like main stat materia existing. You can socket Dex materia into Str gear but it won't help in battle.

Sidebar: Nq gear seems like another pitfall. I don't know why they made Nq so much worse than Hq that it's a whole different class of gear, yet displays the same item level as Hq. And you can't fix the Weapon Damage, Def or Mdef stats with melds.

the tool tip in english says it effects the damage of ranged attacks. So i figured throwing an axe is ranged maybe Dex effects it.

Anyways I just ended up filling up my items with Determination materia. I hadn't realized there were materia for things other than the basic and crafting stats

So from that description, I would expect Clemency to be Mind-based and Holy Spirit to be Intelligence-based. If that's not the case, it's bad wording and/or an oversight on their part. The individual skill descriptions don't tell you which stat they are based on - that would probably be a good idea if it's messy like this.

Likewise, confusion over PLD/WAR's ranged attacks is understandable. It is a physical ranged attack (although also a physical attack dealt by PLD/WAR arms) so seems to fit both descriptions. If it is only meant to affect actual ranged classes then the description should list them by name, like it does for Strength.

It's badly worded, and in some cases I think, just plain not updated for SB.

Every ability in the game scales with your main stat, Holy Spirit uses Strength, Raiton uses dexterity, Vercure uses intelligence, etc.
The one exception is physick on Summoner, which for some reason still uses mind.

I never paid that much attention before but the English tooltips are a bit... odd.

But yeah OP, as others have said, for WAR your main stat is STR, ignore the others. Your best sub-stat to meld would be Crit although you'll probably be alright melding Det. Sub stats aren't going to make or break a fight unless you are on the bleeding edge of endgame content.

A lot of stats are just pitfall galores in this game.

-Mainstats are carbon copies of each other. Every PLD skills are strength based, even Holy Spirit and all (I have no idea why the description for INT says it affects tank damage output but it's 100% wrong). All RDM skills are intelligence based, even melee combo. etc.

-Tenacity says it affects healing amounts so some people think it's like passive Convalescence but infact it affects your damage and so it affects amounts you get from lifesteal, Clemency and Equilibrium. Same goes with Determination.

Don't get me started on skill and this savage tier's debuff descriptions. They are even worse.

Interestingly though, Clemency according to the tooltip has a cure potency of 1200, yet it heals for less than my ast's Benefic 2 of 650. And my pld is better geared.

Edit: on experimentation, raising my pld's mind at the expense of str/vit lowered the amount healed slightly.

Also casters lack of auto attacks are fixed by them having higher weapon damage which plainly makes skills way more potent. Omega Cane (and other caster weapons) have 147 WD and Omega Sword (and likewise) have 109.

I would argue that I enjoy the typical fantasy of having different main stats for different jobs and roles. It gives this nice RPG wibe, the change you are suggesting would change and improve nothing mechanicly yet detract from that typical RPG feel. I know it might sound dumb but I like having different named mainstats.
