The recent “All battle classes at level 50” trend – Plans to adjust the EXP received?

Hello, adventurers.

This is a long post on the high amount of Experience Points we can get, but not simply about that. If you miss one line, you won't understand my real point, so please read it only if you're interested in Adventure.

Every now and then I check other Eorzeans' profiles on The Lodestone and recently (well, since last year actually... It's been a while since I wanted to post this.) I've been noticing this trend to have all the battle classes at level 50.

I know personally many good adventurers with every Disciple of War and Magic at 50, so this is not a post to judge your play style nor time spent in Eorzea!
This is a Topic about a concern I've been having since I noticed this trend and after personally experiencing this super fast way of leveling up.

In another Topic, I talked about possible predictions on the “Legatus Battle” content of patch 1.23, thinking that they might raise the level cap by then.
And if you think about it, with the current system, how much time will it take you to go from level 50 to 55? A couple of days?

My point is simply that. Is it really enjoyable to reach the max level so fast?

Let me illustrate my last own personal Adventure, relating to what I believe will become an issue in the long run.

Yesterday I needed to obtain some materials for crafting, so I went on an Adventure in three different areas of Eorzea.
Before starting, I had Pugilist at level 47 with 17.271 EXP (looking at the data and time on my screenshots); I went to the Twelveswood and fought level 40-42 Wild Hogs for around 20 minutes, getting a few Boar Hides.

Then, I moved to the west in Coerthas and battled level 40-42 Brutal Sheeps for 45 minutes, getting 25 Karakul Fleeces.

Later that evening, I went to Camp Iron Lake and, after some relaxing gathering, I slayed for 40 minutes the level 40-42 Young Raptors near Oakwood, obtaining 25 Raptor Skins.

And my total EXP was... what it is now, 62.913 EXP. That's over 45.000 EXP in less than 2 hours... and without me actually wanting them. :D
In my opinion, 10.000 EXP would have been enough for this time spent of farming materials against monsters 5-7 levels below mine.

This is the reason why I had already stopped doing Regional Levequests and Behests with my Pugilist; if I'd do them, I'd be level 50 before wanting it, and I want to be a level 50 Disciple of the Hand first and do my final Pugilist levels as a Monk. That is my Choice of Adventure.
One of the last times I did a Behest in Camp Bald Knoll I got over 8.000 as EXP Bonus (neglected Behest), so of course I stopped doing them as a Pugilist. Look, it's over 8.000!

At the same time, I'm leveling up Conjurer and Thaumaturge, currently at 23, and I can say that it's not that fast to level them up. It's not slow, either. I think it's just fair. It'll be easier, however, after level 30 (also thanks to Company Leves) and even more after 40.


Don't misunderstand my post into something it isn't, though.
The “problem” doesn't really concern me, as I've the control to decide what leveling up and what not, so I can just stop leveling Pugilist like I did now and focus on something else until patch 1.21.
But thinking about new adventurers... Will this system really make them enjoy the Adventure of leveling up? A system where you can go from level 45 to 50, the final and theoretically hardest levels to achieve (the end EXP needed for Disciples of the Hand & Land is just fair, for instance), in a single day?

In my opinion, leveling up should be an Adventure. Visit different places, trying out different monsters, no matter if they yield less EXP, but at least you vary and you create memories worth to be remembered. :)
This is what I always did. I moved from areas to areas and battled different fiends, experienced different challenges. I may not have a single battle class at level 50 yet, but I surely enjoyed my leveling up! [Until they increased the EXP gain so much, that is.]

Yesterday – that same day I was farming materials – while I was in Treespeak, just before starting to fight hogs, I wanted to pay a visit to the glowing tree and there I stumbled across a group of defeated adventurers: I raised one and then they invited me to join them in battling the Notorious Monster Haughtpox Bloatbelly. I was the only level 47, but I could do my part and we defeated him right after his minions.

Probably something most of you already did many moons ago, but it was my first High-level Notorious Monster and, even if I wasn't at max level or with ultimate equipments, I Greatly enjoyed it nonetheless. :)

Just like when leveling up, before the huge increase in EXP that forced me to stop, with my pace and taking my time.
The last EXP party I had dates at the 1st of January: I accepted because it had passed some time since my last one, but when I reached Camp Broken Water I noticed the surprise of a Thaumaturge 4 (or was it 5?) levels above mine and in fact during the 5-stars levequest I couldn't do much with monsters being defeated incredibily quickly with AoE spells. When I said to the adventurer that invited me that “Maybe you're a bit too high for me...”, he answered: “The end reward is the same for everyone, though.”. This is when I smiled, replying: “You mean the EXP? I don't care about that, I'm interested in the challenge. :)”, and I kindly left the party. What fun would have I had in that?

This is just an example of the type of adventurer that, unfortunately, craves only for reaching the max level as soon as possible, getting el suuuuper equip and that's it. If you're one of them, please don't be offended by this. I just don't understand how much “fun” there can be in participating in a party like the one I just mentioned and leveling up like this.

That said, I hope that when 2.0 is released this system will change, to allow new adventurers to enjoy their travel from level 1 to max, earning it rather than the couple of days it'd take now to go from 50 to 55: Yes, you'll be able to do almost immediately the new super endgame content, but after that...?

In the past, we remember there was a limit to the max Experience Points gained from a monster: even if it was 10 levels above yours, there was a set amount of EXP you could obtain. Now with EXP Chains you can easily get 1.000+ EXP from a single monster.
I'm not saying to return to that (clearly not a rewarding system), but a better balance is surely needed. Unless we really want everyone with a Paragon's Crown :D, supposedly one of hardest Achievements to get.

Like I said, the pace of leveling up until level 30 is fine, the adjustments should be made after that.
I think I read another thread in the past of another adventurer expressing his concerns on how quickly we can level up the battle classes now, but he wasn't understood. “WHAT? Are you asking to give us LESS EXP? How dare you! Did you smoke some of the Twelveswood funguars or what??”, that's what one might think if my point is misunderstood, too, but not if we look at the Eorzea on the long run like I'm doing. Luckily anyway, I've my Flame-proof Subligar equipped. :cool:


If other adventurers feel like answering and telling me if they sincerely enjoyed their journey in reaching level 50 in a few days (or in one), maybe with just the same monsters in Camp Broken Water or with raptors in La Noscea/Coerthas, and if that's fine for them, or would prefer a little slower pace in the leveling up process (that is, a bit less EXP gained) until more variety in the camps/monsters choices is introduced (most likely with 2.0), then please do so.

But I'd also like to ask the community reps, as I don't remember ever reading a response of the plans on this, if the dev team is aware of the situation and can recognize this fast way of leveling up as an issue to be adjusted, like I illustrated thinking about future adventurers, or not.

This game is also being built with a level 99 cap in mind, so we might end up seeing 10,000,000 exp to get from 98-99 when we reach that point :D

Grinding monsters is neither a challenge, nor good content, so no, I don't want reduced exp. If leveling a job was actually fun? Sure, reduce it if you want, but sadly, after grinding for several hours, it is no longer fun.

SE listen to Cladio - we need to adjust this adjusted system for the 4th time. Make leveling a dead crawl and struggle so only the "good" players can hit 50. Leveling is the main part of the game and should take your entire life to work up to.

Forget that cross-class skills are needed to play as certain roles, we need to make this as hard as possible so there is no chance these lamer "casuals" can be near us.

Each mob should give 1 exp, and if you fight anything your level it should nearly kill you. Get on the ball here SE leveling IS THE WHOLE GAME!!!!!!!!!!

I dont mind the amount of time it takes to rank up at all...

But when you convert that experience and make it the same to rank up when you are a crafter or gatherer as when you are a battle class...UGHHH

Paragon's crown is not hard at all to get. If XPing took more time it would just take longer to get it but still be easy since it's just grinding.

XP methods should be up to the player IMO. I really would like level sync but I wouldn't denounce anyone for PLs because that's their decision on how they want to progress through the game. We just need more avenues of xp/more different things to do so that taking it slow isn't repetitive and rewarding for a larger variety of players. As it is now, you may love randomly wandering around and farming enemies for XP but a large amount of people won't.

Also, reducing XP received affects everyone, especially people that don't have much time to play and have to rely on soloing for XP and/or prefer playing solo for their XP. These people still need to be able to make reasonable progress with their playtime.

I understand how you would think that leveling would be capped so fast, but you say it yourself there. "In my opinion," Because you have fun playing the way you do does not mean other people would have fun playing your way. Some people can't stand the grind. As it is now you're leveling at the pace you want to go and you're enjoying it. If you were to take that away everyone would be forced to level at your pace. So there would be people unhappy about leveling at your pace. As it is now you can level at the speed you want to go and other people can level at the speed they want to go.

Other people see it as different things. Some people hate grinding cause you're just doing the same thing over. Can you really say it is fun to some people doing the same thing every day? Next day same thing, next day same thing, next day same thing. It does not matter to them if the background is different or if the mob looks different. It is the same thing to them. Other people want to get to the current end game content because eventually it will be pointless to do or will be hard to find people doing it because its pointless at that time to do so. Look at the way Darkhold is handled now. I hardly ever find anyone doing it. This is just how people see things and people will always have to disagree or feel a different way on a subject. To me it is fine as it is now. Everyone can play the way they want to right now, but that is my opinion.

I sometimes catch myself realising "oh crap, i'm already in mid thirties with this class too!". 1-20 is pretty slow if you level in a small party, but it speeds up after that and you land at lv40 pretty fast. Hitting lv50 after that is a matter of a day, maybe 2.

I do enjoy leveling in a party and I don't know what I am going to do when I end up maxing everything, but people who enjoy the journey rather than maxing everything ASAP are a rare, dying breed. People will burn through the content and complain there is nothing to do.

No no, wait, I'm not talking about grinding here. “Grinding” is something I never liked, that is: doing the same thing over and over again. That's why I said I don't understand how much “fun” it can be to do always the same levequests in Camp Broken Water or the same raptors in La Noscea/Coerthas.

In Eorzea I always like to vary. For instance, in early levels I did levequests in the camps but also tested my skills against the monsters in the area. Not every day, though. Varying has always been my key to enjoy Eorzea.

I can't go over the single hour timeline of doing the same monsters. Yesterday I did:

- 20 minutes of Wild Hogs
- 45 minutes of Brutal Sheeps
[Pause]
- 4 Fieldcraft Leves in La Noscea
- 40 minutes of Young Raptors

I couldn't possibly do the same today, not because I got the items I needed but because I need to vary.
Sorry if it wasn't understood, it was a long post and maybe not 100% clear.

Like I said, 45.000 EXP for less than 2 hours (total, 20+45+40) of time and with monsters 5-7 levels below mine seems a bit too much... I'd find it acceptable for creatures, say, 3-4 levels above.
But yes, that's just my opinion.

At the same time, I'm aware that reducing the EXP would affect those that don't have much time to spend in Eorzea (I'm one of them, by the way), and I don't want to incur in their wrath either. I just have the concern that I expressed: rushing to level 50 with all the battle classes opens the endgame content, but is this rush really enjoyable? The last time I asked in Eorzea I got this response: “Ah no, at last it's over!”, but if many here would say they enjoyed doing level 45-50 in one or two day, then that's OK.

If the reduced EXP would be only for “grinding monsters” or give a more understandable and balanced amount of EXP if you do combat for a couple of hours against low level monsters (my experience is just as example eh), those adventurers who don't stay long in Eorzea wouldn't be affected... unless, of course, they do grinding.

The way it is now, most of the posts on this forum of others saying there's nothing to do, I can always foresee their classes' level... so I go and check their profile and... all battle classes at level 50, Ifrit and Moogle done in short order, etcetera.
I, for one, speaking as an adventurer who stays daily in Eorzea between 2 to (weekends) 5 hours, have never run out of contents. If the EXP gained after level 40 would be slightly reduced... or, more balanced if you battle monsters many levels below yours, I don't think it would affect much my Gladiator or Marauder growth, currently at level 35. I should be able to reach level 45+ in time for the 7th Umbral Era limited contents, and so might the others who stay in Eorzea my same time.

Again, sorry if my post was misunderstood. It's natural that everyone has the right to enjoy and live his or her experience in Eorzea how he or she wants. Enjoy, though. :)
Of course, the next time I read a “There's nothing to do...” from a level 50 ALL Disciples of War and Magic, I'll rocketlaunch my Iron Subligar on his knee. ;)

Well, I hope my concern is really nothing to worry about. We'll see as time goes by.
Thanks to those who posted their constructive opinions and if, in case, the community reps can confirm if any adjustment on this matter is currently planned or not.

Leveling in FFXI was fun... I dare say it was one of my favorite activities of classic XI. Getting PL'd to 40 and then grouping for another day isn't fun.

People might think they want the game to be easy, but they really don't seem to realize that obstacles MAKE the game. WoW removed the obstacles AND the content once you bypass those obstacles, and now it's tanking at a rate of 2 million subscribers every three quarters. Don't make FFXIV like that. Leveling should take time, and it should be fun-- grouping with people and having a good time is part of what an MMO is supposed to be.

Now you might say "if you don't like PL, don't do it!" Well, even if I did, most people seem to have accepted it as a way of life by now. At least on Saronia, anyway. Even if I boycotted PLing, I still need other people to group with and there just aren't any. People need restrictions placed upon them, because the majority will always take the path of least resistance even if it is a detriment to the game.

TL;DR

What I took away from it is: it's not the destination that matters, but the journey. Swell, good for you. However, keep in mind that not everyone enjoys such a grind. Some people might not even have 2 hours to sit down to grind every day. Even so, they would like to see progress, and 50% of a level nowadays is considered to be barely any progress. In order to cater to the most number of people, the experience gain should be enough where your casual don't feel like they're stuck in a rut, and your hardcore players won't feel so trivialized, which is why the current experience gain is what it is.

I do, and many many of millions of people do, go play maple story, thats one of the top mmos that you don't hear about.

I hope not.

To be fair, gaining half a level after two hours of grinding mobs 5-7 levels below you sounds out of whack. They should reduce the exp gain significantly after the 3-5 level mark to prevent stuff like that.

Arguably the only reason SO many people have all jobs maxed out is because the total EXP is so puny compared to FFXI, and because for a while, there was literally NOTHING to do except grind.

Hmm. It could also be because:

1) Most of the jobs required having a job at level 30 before you could go through a long questchain to unlock them,
2) Leveling jobs required five other people (barring PUP and BST, which took ungodly amounts of time to level regardless),
3) Leveling any job required having the 'appropriate' sub job also leveled,
4) Limit breaks,
5) Leveling groups requiring fairly rigid standards to get anything done,
6) Traveling to camps for leveling taking in excess of 30 to 45 minutes,
7) A harsh death penalty, complete with downleveling,
8) Leveling your skills being an extra facet of combat, and not a given,
9) An ungodly tank : DD : healer ratio making some DD classes completely superfluous, and others damn-near mandatory,
10) The Dunes.

But yeah, let's blame how small FFXIV's TNL is in comparison to FFXI:

And again, I pointed out why your post was not only semantically incorrect, but logically incorrect, too. The TNL is irrelevant, because the additional crap required just to get that exp going far superseded whatever the actual TNL was. The long and short of it is, if you want leveling to take longer, it stands to reason that leveling needs to be harder to do -- either by making it harder to acquire exp in a timely manner, or make it harder to kill monsters in a timely manner.

Or you could nerf exp gains from mobs below your current level (and vastly above your target level) to oblivion to ensure that you can't farm EPs and/or have a level 50 farm mobs while you're level 14 to PL you to 40 in a day. Sorta thing.

We have here the same old argument that begins with someone saying that the exp gain is way too fast, and people reply with exaggerated scenarios in which it takes a year to hit max level. It seems someone has to step in here and call for some kind of middle ground agreement.

Yes, exp now is too fast.
Yes, exp when the game was first released was probably too slow.
Somewhere in the middle lies the magical value that keeps everyone happy!

I'm sure that with the release of V2.0 and the many smaller zones we'll see something like FFXI had, where a single zone would be a good place to exp for ~5 lvls, then you would need to move to another area. The way the game is setup now, there isn't a lot of exploring and variety to be had, so I can see how many people would say grinding is boring. With lots of little zones you will surely see variety in enemy types, enemy distribution and scenery, along with the need to move on from an area periodically as you level. If this doesn't keep you happy while grinding at a steady pace, obviously broken up by other content such as leves, quests, crafting, dungeons etc. (don't tell me you want to grind non stop all day and then complain it's slow and boring because that's thinking like a mentally disabled person) then there's something seriously wrong here!

All in all I agree with slowing the pace of lvling down, but not too far.. How about a nice round 2 months of say 3 hours a day 5 days a week grinding in exp parties to hit 50 on a job? (~120 hours). Sounds like reasonable middle ground to me.

No offense Cloudio, but you don't need to make a thread EVERY SINGLE TIME you think of something, especially when it's been discussed 10 billion times already.

Maybe it's because I'm a "jackass", but I really don't see anything NEW AND ORIGINAL about this.

He could've went through the "trouble" of posting it in one of the billion topics on the subject, many of us tend to do just that in order to keep all ideas about a certain topic in one or two threads on that specific topic.

But yes I'm the jackass because I don't spam the forums with redundant threads. Good riddance.

I also replied to him with my opinion on the subject, but I'm certain you skimmed over that because it's not important in the slightest. Maybe I should open my own topic about it.

Ragnarok has 100,000,000 exp from 98 to 99 ^^
By the way, in Ragnarok you need 102,468 exp from 49 to 50. Just a little bit more than in FF XIV. 1-50 is a walk, the real grind begin with 70+ I say

People might think they want the game to be easy, but they really don't seem to realize that obstacles MAKE the game. I enjoyed leveling in XI too; hell, XI was all around fun pre-abyssea. I'd not even bother playing XIV anymore if Abyssea at least had a Lv.75 MINIMUM access.

The one thing about FFXIV that makes it sad though is its reverse leveling curve - that instead of high-level being harder to obtain, it's easier once you get past the low levels.

The reason that most everyone has all battle classes maxed is because there is not much else to do in the game.

Why should those who don't enjoy a grind "go play another MMO" when this one already is designed to be less of a grind?

Seems to me that the people who want to take months in a full party to get anything done should be the ones to seek greener pastures as they're expecting XIV to be something that Yoshida said it will not.

Oh I remember that game... Maybe 40 something hours to get to 98... Then a good 100 hours to do 98-99! lol

Getting from 98-99 required you to get as much exp as 1-98.... that was a grind, unless you played on a highrate server lol. Took me about 6 months to get to 99 on my priest, but i was taking my time.

A lot of you have missed the OP's point here...

He isn't saying reduce exp, and he also isn't saying make it harder to rank up. He is just saying to make the damn thing an adventure, make it more fun. That is all.

I happen to agree with the OP. Either the experience required for level needs to go up drastically, or experience needs to be lowered. Leveling takes no skill, or even real ability to do. There are no imps blasting me with silence, amnesia, and tier 4 magic giving me a very satisfying 300 exp. Instead we got raptors that can be killed in less than 10 seconds that yield 600-1,200 with no effort.

The journey to the cap is one of the biggest accomplishments in an MMORPG for me. In Final Fantasy XI (pre-abyssea) it was a damn accomplishment. If you seen someone with a Maat's cap you knew that were generally a more advanced skilled player. In Final Fantasy XIV the Paragons Crown is essentially the same thing, but it doesn't require squat to get it.

There's only so much Ifrit/Moogle/Darkhold/Crafting a person can take before they want to jump ship to another MMO. I don't want leveling to be AS slow as Final Fantasy XI, but I definitely don't want it to be like this. I shouldn't be able to attain 25 levels in a single day. Back before 1.18 I had a blast in a long time party where I got two levels in a day. I felt satisfied for the effort I had put in. Now I can go afk, and let others kill for me and come back with 10 levels.

So please Square either reduce exp yielded by mobs considerably, raise experience needed to level drastically, and for the love of Odin make monsters that are difficult to kill and take longer than 10 seconds to die.

Pretty sure the reason why it's so easy to level is because they expect you to level multiple classes in order to get the skills you want. Imo getting to cap isn't getting one job to 50, getting all of them to 50 is.

They are working towards focusing in on character development via questing to get your next skill rather then development through XP points. HENCE JOBS!

AND once again why do you care how X, Y, and Z players play? If you want to play a specific way like gain XP the slow way by all means...Many gamer's today don't care for the whole long drawn out XP thing. Nor do we have the time...the whole point and why the whole XP gain is easy is that a hard core player and a casual player can play together and not be mutually exclusive and segregated.

Once I'm high level I want to fight epic battles to earn epic skills and abilities I'd like to have to do some major major hard content...that is the trend I want. So that when someone casts a spell I gooo oooh awe wow he mastered that spell..
