So, during a main scenario quest, I was on my way up a mountain in Dravania, knocking out a few sidequests along the way, when I suddenly found myself in over my head. I had got into the Gnath village where Lady Iceheart and myself were to be captured by the bird people so they could take us in front of their god.
I was caught off guard by a few surprise respawns and I ended up dead. (This was before I had Vercure) Luckily, I set my homepoint to Tailfeather, but it was still a long way from where I died. So I had to ride all the way back to the village, fighting through all the respawns.
It got me wondering. Why are there no graveyards in this game? This wasn't an issue in ARR. But in HW, I'm finding the zones much more spread out, and setting your homepoint to the nearest hub doesn't really help.
Someone said something about Phoenix Downs. Is that something I can buy off the market board?

Phoenix Downs will allow you to raise another dead person - you cant use them on yourself, so they wont help you if you die. All healers, aswell as RDM and SMN are also having a raise-skill that can be used to raise people. You can always try to /shout for a raise (use <pose> to let them know where to find your body), people are often nice enough to give a helping hand there!
And honestly: The overworld is pretty much tame like a new born kitten - dying their occurs very, very rarerly. I honestly cant recall the last time I died to something... so, just as Penthea said: Having to make your way back is your punishment for being careless.
I also assume that graveyards are a mechanic from another game? Because we do have a graveyard location in eastern Thanalan... but thats not what you're refering to, is it? -

Phoenix downs are useless in that they can't be used during battle, only when there's nothing beating on the down owner can they raise someone if they don't have access to a raise spell and you can only carry one at a time. The other thing is this game does not use a death system. SE went the "you're simply unconscious from being knocked out" route, so graveyards would be useless in this scenario for overworld situations.
At least there's an aetheryte or two for each zone to teleport to even though you still had to travel back to that spot on the map. Could have been worse without one. -

In OP's defense, the aetherytes in Heavensward were really poorly placed. CWH and Azys Lla have them in the extreme corners of the maps, Sea of Clouds and Dravanian Forelands have two but aren't really central, and Dravanian Hinterlands doesn't even have one at all. The problem gets a lot better when you can fly, but if you die in Lost Gnath during the main story before you have flight you have to run from Tailfeather all the way north and around to get back in. Player graveyards don't really make sense in the lore, since we're essentially immortal demigods, but more convenient access points would be nice.

It's not like you have to wait 15 minutes for an Airship in Jeuno, navigate a maze-like Jungle for 10 minutes, and then Sneak + Invis your way through Volcano mobs that can't be solo'd. -

Regardless, nothing is too far from an aetheryte so I never understood why people always ask for res, asking someone to travel an entire map for you so you dont have to travel the entire map, even though you'll be spending all the time lying there dead doing nothing.
If you die just walk there again. -

In terms of travel, they're generally the "same distance", just that you have to loop north of Tailfeather to head out and go down and Anyx Trine is a just go southeast path.

The only games I recall using graveyards were World of Warcraft where if I remember right you still had to run back to your corpse as a ghost. Ever Quest 1 used them too. If you died in certain higher tier zones, since it was possible to either 100% wipe in a raid, die in lava or a place where your body couldn't be recovered easily, surrounded by monsters or flat out glitched underworld. I would think the Aetheryte fast travel was enough to make "graveyards" obsolete.
Even if your homepoint isn't the nearest one, it takes less than a minute to port to that one, no body retrieval side-step required. -

Heh, I remember the first time I died in SB, was during the MSQ in Ruby Sea. I think it was the fight in the fishing village. This is before the MSQ took you to either of the aetherytes in the zone. So ... respawn in Kugane ... and basically had to swim across the entire Ruby Sea to get back where the quest is. Wasn't too happy to say the least.
