Dark Knight rework

Dark Knight experienced a lot of changes in 4.0. Many skills were lost to the new role actions, and the entire way the job functions was reworked. The skills of 4.0 lack synergy with the rest of DRKs toolkit, and optimizing the class is currently unrewarding, as the skill floor and skill ceiling feel inches from each other. Dark Knight has many options, but those options all equate to roughly the same result. Making the class feel stale. Personal mitigation also took a large hit, and DRK is noticeably squishier than the other tanks.

Looking at 4.0 skills, Square Enix seems like they have a plan for the way DRK should play, and I think the changes I'm about to suggest fall in line with that vision.


Grit cooldown changed to 10s

Dark Mind:
Reduces damage taken by 10%.
Can only be executed when succumbing to the Darkside.
Duration:15s
Additional effect: 30% chance that upon taking damage the next Dark Arts will have no MP cost. Duration: 10s
Dark Arts Effect: Increases damage reduction to 20%.
Dark Arts fades upon execution.

Blood Price:

Restores partial MP when damage is taken.
Duration:15s
Additonal Effect: Increases Blood Gauge by 1 immediately and another 4 over time while in battle.
Additional Effect: Halves the Blood Gauge cost of Quietus and Bloodspiller.
Duration: 15s
Can only be used while under the effect of Grit.

Bloodspiller:

Delivers an attack with a potency of 400.
Additional effect: Execute next combo without meeting combo prerequisites.
Dark Arts*Potency:540
Grit*Potency:475
Dark Arts+Grit*Potency:650
Blood Gauge Cost: 50
Dark Arts fades upon execution.

Dark Passenger:

Deals unaspected damage with a potency of 100 to all enemies in a straight line before you.
Can only be executed when succumbing to the Darkside.
Additional Effect: Stun 5s
Dark Arts*potency: 240
Dark Arts Effect: Damage over time. Potency is reduced by 5% for the second enemy, 10% for the third, 15% for the fourth, and 25% for all remaining enemies.
Potency: 40
Duration: 15s
Dark Arts fades upon execution.

Creates a barrier around self that absorbs damage totaling 20% of your maximum HP, or around a party member that absorbs damage totaling 10% of your maximum HP.

i like your ideas^^
a few things seem a bit too powerfull, like free dark arts under dark mind, or aoe TBN, but i like it in general.

I'm ok with all of this. Currently, DRKs are the hardest to heal tank. Yuns just seem to take more damage than WARs or PLD and I would love to see you boosted a bit because you are probably the coolest looking one.

I like the suggestion for DA + DP, would actually make it somewhat worth half our MP

On what basis are you talking about that DRK is the hardest tank to heal? Maybe most DRKs you have met just didn't play the job well enough.

I really love this change. The extra mitigation needed without extra buttons and a FREE Dark Arts is extremely valuable and will raise DPS significantly. It's perfect.
Probably just my unpopular opinion, but if DRK got ONLY this change, it would be on par with both PLD and WAR in mitigation and DPS.

I like the first 3 changes a lot, here's two I would tweak however.

Dark Passenger should simply be reverted. With Delirium+BP on big pulls you want to Blind things less than ever and instead spend that mana on DA Abyssal if you need to play defensively. Simple=better here I think.

I get that with TBN you are trying to buff our utility a bit, but I agree this is a bit overpowered, especially on a 15 second cooldown. I think for the ability itself, extending the duration just to 6s would be sufficient to ensure that it breaks barring a significant miss-timing (popping it before a phase change, for instance).

I've poked around FFlogs a bit, and I'm finding that on average, DRKs tend to use TBN 2-3 times a minute, so it being on a 15 second cooldown arguably isn't necessary. What I would rather see, is a recast increase on TBN to 20-30s, and instead see a reduction in Shadow Wall's recast/increase in its duration, or another mechanic I've thought of that I think would be really neat, to have DA cut its recast time by a few seconds per cast.

For utility... I'm honestly not too sure. I've always been a fan of ideas that allow DRK to provide a benefit to caster comps, but I wouldn't know how to implement such a change in a way that wouldn't be unbalancing or make DRK required.

For the most part I completely agree with you, and I have absolutely no problem with the cooldown on Grit, because in all honesty I rarely Leave Grit + Darkside.

The Problem here resides with how you changed DP and TBN.

For DP: A 15s blind is far more useful than a 5s stun with how the game is right now. If they just make it so that blind is included into the base effect, I would actually use it. Blind is fantastic damage mitigation with how accuracy is right now.

For TBN: In all honesty, all I would do to change is increase the duration to 6s ~ 8s and increase the cool down to 20s ~ 30s which would balance it out more by making it unavailable for every tank buster. Have it spread to nearby allies would just out right brake what little balance the skill has.

I absolutely agree this is probably part of the case. But in general they take more damage and give me more "oh crap" moments then the other two tanks.

I think what I would do to Dark Passenger is make it have a damage down like Storm's Path when DA, but not as strong; say 5-8%, no more than that as to not re-create a 3.0 WAR scenario. Just enough reduction to make it an attractive option even in single target situations.

The small mitigation from blind would be replicated in straight damage reduction instead, and also be able to be used on anything making it useful for raids.

I felt like the previous design of DP, where the baseline ability had value in single target and the DA ability had value in AoE, made a lot more sense than it does now. If they wanted to tone down the potency, they should have removed the base cost.

It also doesn't help that they teased us with Spiral Hell as an upgraded Dark Passenger fireball. It's unfortunate that such an iconic ability has been made so niche.

Actually the DADP blind was tested to be around a 5%~ or so accuracy reduction if i remember correctly, so basically useless. its also worth noting that both Blind and Stun have horrible synergy with the job due to it reducing the ammount of times you'll be hit = less mana from Blood Price.
Also how would increasing its cooldown to make in unavailable for every tank buster be balancing it? DRK is already the tank that has the least mitigation out of the 3 tanks and relies heavily on TBN to even be on par with the other two.

Anyway im going to throw my 2 cents in to how i would change DRK, keeping in mind that im super sleepy right now and i haven't put much thought in to this.

Dark Passenger:

Cost Changed to 1200 MP (half of DA)
Deals unaspected damage with a potency of 130 to all enemies in a straight line before you.
Can only be executed when succumbing to the Darkside.
Dark Arts*potency: 250
Dark Arts Effect: 100% Chance that next TBN will cost no MP.
Dark Arts Effect: Blinding Darkness Debuff: Unable to use Dark Arts on Dark Passenger for 60 seconds
Dark Arts fades upon execution.

The reasoning behind the DA effect is so that if you spend a bit more MP than a TBN by itself then you'll get the damage aswell, and the inability to utilise this more than once per minute will increase the skill ceiling of the job while also not making the DA effect OP.

Blood Price:

Recast changed to 30 seconds.
Restores partial MP when damage is taken.
Duration:15s
Additional Effect: Increases Blood Gauge by 1 immediately and another 4 over time while in battle.
Additional Effect: Reduces damage taken by 10%.
Duration: 10s
Can only be used while under the effect of Grit.

Right now DRK has the lowest overall mitigation for non-tank busters. This is a problem and this change i think should help with that. The recast being changed is to allow higher uptime.

Blood Weapon:

Recast Changed to 30 seconds
Reduces weaponskill cast time and recast time, spell cast time and recast time, and auto-attack delay by 10% and converts physical damage dealt into MP, while reducing weaponskill TP cost by 20%. Also increases Blood Gauge by 3 each time a physical attack lands.
Duration: 15s
Additional effect: Auto attack potency is doubled for the duration of this ability.
Cannot be used while under the effect of Grit.

DRK needs slightly more damage imo.

Sole Survivor:

Changed recast to 90 seconds.
Marks target with the status Another Victim. If that target should be KO'd in battle, 20% of your maximum HP and MP will be restored.
Additional Effect: Increases chances of direct hit to be inflicted upon target by 5%
Duration: 12s

A lil more utility, similar to SCHs Chain Stratagem. making this ability actually useful on bosses and increasing the skill ceiling as you may need it for the MP/HP restore on an add but you might want to use it on the boss to help push a phase.

Shadow Wall:

Reduces damage taken by 30%.
Duration: 20s

Increased duration. Because lets me honest here right now its literally a weaker sentinel in EVERY way.

I do like a number of these ideas, but some could be changed. But let's go through each of the change ideas one by one.

Everything here sounds good, except for the halving the Quietus AND Bloodpiller, Quietus i would be fine with it halving. Even with the MP buff i don't see many DK's using it in Dungeons, and this would make it more ready. But the Bloodspiller halving, would be a little OP. ( to be continued in Part 2 of post :D)

K so here is where i disagree the most. TBA is a powerful ability, And i do agree it should get a DA affect, but just making it a raid-wide is too powerful without something to limit that, IF we kept that effect, DA+TBA should add a LONG CD on that capability. Like over a minute long Debuff preventing DA+TBA's effect triggering and just triggering the normal TBA affect.

He's not wrong though, especially now in 4.x.

In 3.x, BP could only ever last 15s giving you a 25s window to blind/boost evasion/etc. Your AoE cooldown rotation had a "hit me" phase and then a "don't hit me" phase. Now however BP's uptime is higher in dungeons with Delirium, and Quietus makes MP so plentiful you'll 100% get more eHP gains by simply DAing AD than even touching DP, DA or not.

I agree, I posted this in the DRK discussion thread on how I would like such a cooldown implemented, personally. It's a long-shot out there granted, but trying to kill a couple birds with one stone.

Essentially, Dark Mind as a Requiescat and Shadow Wall broken from the mold of Vengeance/Sentinel and becoming more a resource-intensive Ability instead of recast-centric. Not sure how wel lthat would work tho. Not sure how much it helps a xpot/TA burst window either, is more sustain following PLDs footsteps.

Dark Mind: 20s duration, 40/60s recast.
*cancels the effect of Blood Weapon, *cancels the effect of Blood Price. (ie: you can't stack this with price/weapon)
*Reduces MP cost by 25%, (would be fine if the MP cost reduction were just for Dark Arts, Dark Passenger, and TBN)
*Reduces Ability cooldowns by 30% (DRK Job Abilities only, only when Abilities are used under the effect of Dark Mind).

Delirium + Blood Weapon: Extend Weapon duration by 10 seconds, WS/Spell recast enhanced from 10% reduction to 15%.
Delirium + Blood Price: Extend Price by 20 seconds, heal DRK for 1200 potency, Delirium CD reduced to 60s
Delirium + Dark Mind: Extend Mind by 10 seconds, resets C&S, DP, Salted Earth, TBN, & Shadow Wall cooldowns, Delirium CD reduced to 90s

Shadow Wall: 60s recast, 10s duration.
*Restores partial MP when damage is taken
*Erects a barrier nullifying 30% damage of the next 3(?) incoming attacks.
*Dark Arts effects: duration extended to 20s(15?), the 3 attack limit is removed.

I mean, if we're talking wall-to-walls which could number anywhere from 8 to 16 (16 being those dedicated aoe packs), there's so much MP overflow that it's a waste not to DP, DA or not, at that point. One Quietus is full MP and then between BP, Salted Earth, and TBN, you're going to over flow on -something-, be it MP or Blood, even with DP

The simple solution to this is simply the base DRK AoE rotation which is to DEBP, DAAD/TBN until low on mana, and then Quietus. All DADP is going to do is make you floor faster before you've regened the Blood to use Quietus again, and gimp BP's returns unless you wait until BP has fallen off (31s if you use Delirium with it, which you ought to on a pull of that size). DAAD is more than a 3rd of your mana, if you're doing this every GCD you don't need DP as a dump.

A. That's not what I said and B. What part didn't you understand? Spending your mana on DADP is not necessary to avoid overflow, nor is it DPS or mitigation efficient. And in your original post you stated that you wind up overflowing even if you do use DP. The mana is better spent on AD.

How can you not have TBN for every buster. Unless we get increased mitigation elsewhere (ie: reduce cooldown or buff shadow wall) then your it will put so much stress on the healers that DRK will be hard to find groups.

I'd also like to point out another semi-useless ability in sole survivor. I basically forgot about it until the other day. With quietus buff I don't really need it for the MP gains or the HP gains cause DA AD is usually enough for large groups. I think it would be fine to keep it as a dungeon ability but buff it, but it would be nice to see it have some sort of single target effect for raids.

I use it on O3S on the white flame, Apanda and then the Giant/one of the ninjas later on. its just a free gain of MP and HP. it's great.... BUUUUT i feel it could be better, as i suggested yesterday on this thread.

Soul Survivor is essentially the DRK equivalent to the self heals brought in 3.x, Equilibrium and Clemency. I think it needs a CD reduction to 60 first and foremost, but it could also use a single target effect. Maybe something like if you deal 100% of your max HP to the enemy during the 20 seconds, you get the MP and HP.

This is a neat idea, but it would require extremely high DPS and maybe even some catering to if not lined up with your burst, considering its only 15 seconds and 52000 HP / 15 seconds requires nearly 3500 DPS.

@20 seconds its a lot easier (requiring more like 2600 DPS which is easy to pull off without any burst), but its still kinda convoluted on a job that already has a lot of hoops to jump through to get the most out of some of its abilities (TBN, LD, etc.)

I think tacking on a simple heal over time effect would be really nice.

I think a single change to sole survivor could "save" drk from current situation: on top of the original effect, restore 25% of total mp spended during sole survivor's duration ( like a reverse wild fire with mp )

I guess this thread is better than the "feedback" topic for some ideas:

By now I came to the conclusion to just remove the need for DA on CnS. Just have it at 450p anytime. I would even keep the MP return as it is. right now it is so little that it's almost useless.

Boost DP to a base of 250p and put it on the same CD as CnS. Remove the need for DA as well.

As for BP. Just add the often suggested defense boost (-10% damage taken) but I would leave SW as it is in this case.

For Sole Survivor treat it as a buff for the DRK and have it double all absorb effects during it's duration (both MP and HP).

Either reduce Deliriums recast to 1min or have it's recast reduced by 5s for each DA you use (as was suggested by someone else here)

For LD just don't have the DRK die if not healed enough but put double weakness on it.

For Quietus and BS rise the damage buff from DA (maybe in form of a DoT in case of BS). Right DAing either is quite boring.

Oh ya and TBN duration up to 6s.


That should rise the damage output a bit as well as giving DRK a bit more mitigation and survivability.

Dark Passenger needs to be a gain in potency per use. At least 130pot from 100pot. A DA is 140pot, if we want to go along with that line, Dark Passenger needs to be weaker per 2.4k mana used in the case of aoe.

TBN needs a QoL from 5sec to 6sec duration. Again covering 2 autos makes it so much better. TBN itself seems so OP for the 15sec recast and I would expect it getting nerfed.

The damage output part for DRK is already somewhat similar to PLD and I don't really don't think we want another WAR/DRK comp throughout the expac. Some minor buff to DRK's potency is probably needed to avoid WAR/PLD ruling over DRK, because it seems that raiders are already doing WAR/PLD in fflogs.

Honestly I wish they'd just turn DP into Circle of Scorn v2. 100 potency on use + 150 DoT, 200 potency + 150 DoT and blind on Dark Arts. Oh, also increased enmity.
Balance aside, Dark Passenger looks cool and used to feel good to use. If they were going to awkwardly neuter an ability for single target they should have done it to salted earth.

Creates a barrier around self that absorbs damage totaling 20% of your maximum HP, or around a party member that absorbs damage totaling 10% of your maximum HP.

Increases Blood Gauge by 50 when full 20% (10%) is absorbed.

Rotation I came up with based off of my design. Not sure if it's optimal, but I think it could work and has synergy with how I feel DRK is intended to play per SE current changes, ie Grit being used as a MP Regen / blood burn through bloodspillers.
