DPS Queues (This isn't about what you think it's about)

SE Seriously needs to change the formula on how you "Accept" your duty.

Please read ALL of it before passing judgement.

In MY case, I play, currently, exclusively DPS. I DO NOT mind the length of the queue, it lets me do other things while I wait. I JUST got into stormblood content, and am wanting to read/see the storyline. But today, TWICE in a row, I "Did not accept my duty" because I was in a Cutscene, a LONG cutscene.

My issue is, the Duties will pop at the most inconvenient times. Just initiated a leve for my BOT? DUTY POP!

Just started a long cutscene? DUTY POP! followed by the delay of any animations in the cutscene, as well as the 'blank screen flash' then having to open my character screen, AND change to the class I queue'd as.. but guess what? took half a second too long, 2 strikes! one more and i can't queue again for a while at all!

You should be allowed to accept the duty, regardless of what class you are, and whether you're 'busy' or not (Busy meaning in a cutscene/interaction/other) and as soon as your duty pops, it cancels the cutscene (to make you have to view it again) and changes your class to the class you selected, and then ports you to the duty in question.

I am willing to abandon a leve for a duty, I am willing to watch the WHOLE cutscene again for my duty, I'm NOT suggesting the other 3 + people should have to wait on me.

But at the same time, I SHOULD NOT be punished for wanting to enjoy the storyline, and not be forced to speed read or otherwise 'Skip Cutscene' in which I end up MISSING part of the great story to avoid the 'Duty Abandonment' punishment. And sure, I can always look at the 'journey' book that replays cutscenes, but it doesn't replay ALL of them, only the most important ones to my knowledge, but again, I should not be forced to go to that method to avoid 'Duty Abandonment'

I realize I'm mostly just venting frustration here, and that i'm basically throwing a tantrum, however, like I said, I don't feel it's right I should be punished for wanting to experience the story-line in its entirety, just because my Duty decides to pop the moment i start a MSQ-CS.

You can press escape and click to force a cutscene to end early.

And if you wanted to see that cutscene later, you can view it from your journal in an inn room.

This isn't an issue exclusive to DPS. And yes, It's super frustating to be enjoying a CS when POP.

Having it cancel the CS to let us rewatch it as soon as we get out would benefit everyone.

@ Cenrae But, as I said, I should not be forced to resort to that. And not 'all' cutscenes are view-able from that book, only the most important ones, to the best of my knowledge.

Maybe changing it so that you don't get a strike while in a cut scene or something along those lines. It is frustrating but I don't think extending the duration of the time you have to accept would help in some cases and there is no way SE would shorten their cut scenes. So not giving a strike is the only way I can see a way to help a little although it doesn't solve the problem.

I never once suggested extending the time to accept. Please read the whole post...

You could simply check to see how high in the list you are BEFORE starting the cut scene, or leve, or whatever it is you want to do. I do this all the time because I craft while waiting for queues to pop.

You...you do know you can accept the duty queue when it pops in the middle of a cutscene, and it'll replay the cutscene from the start when you get out of the dungeon, right? What's the issue?

@ Zara it doesn't tell you anything other than how many people are in the duty status, not 'when' the last person will queue.

@ Emst You do know you can't switch classes while in a cutscene.. right? READ THE WHOLE 3 POSTS.

When DF starts retrieving information, usually it ends up saying that you are assigned a number higher than 50. Eventually, when you reach number 50 in line, it actually displays your position in line.

The simple solution, that works most of the time? Don't start anything when you are in single digit territory.

PS - if you edit your post, you can exceed the character limit.

While this is the case for MOST cutscenes, it doesn't apply to all of them. I had to skip a CS while in Azim Steppe because the pop up was hidden behind the cutscene. Thus I had to skip it to get into the duty. Which was disappointing because it was one of the ones that talked about the Au'ra beliefs or origin story. I've tried to find that CS in the journal, but I've had no luck so far. OP's complaint is legitimate, albeit it's a small percentage of CS's that don't allow the df pop up over the CS itself.

I can figure out roughly how much time it will be by my number in the list. It's really not hard to do.

Zarabeth, you can wait 1 min for that last person to queue or it can be 40 min. The biggest issue I think the OP has really is the inability to change class/job without skipping a CS that may not be available at the inn. Honestly I don't see why the game can't automatically switch you to the class/job/gear set you were in when you queued when you hit accept. It would solve the problem described here, and has no downside I can see.

I've never had it take more than 10 minutes when it comes down to single digit place in line. I may be lucky, I don't know. But I'm going to 2nd the: "If your place in line is low, get ready" suggestion. It would be nice in the future to just be auto zapped back to whatever class/equipment you had when you queued, but I have a feeling this has something to do with how it was originally coded and all that. I don't think it snapshots anything other than what class you queued as. Adding a change to it would mean it'd have to remember gear/glamor/materia/dye information for your loadout, probably increasing server bandwith usage.

I'm very glad they made you able to queue with your companion out, now I can do higher level huntmarks while I wait.

OP: your suggestion is valid but there are probably server side reasons this won't happen soon. For what it's worth I support what you're asking for, but suggest keeping track of your position in queue for the time being.

A very old suggestion I had was a "Pass" option.

If you are for any reason unable to immediately join a duty, the Pass option switches you with the next player in queue who is also eligible for what you joined. Passes count towards your daily limit of Declines.

So if you are queuing for something and the next 12 players didn't queue for it, only the 13th player in queue had queued for the same content you did, then using Pass will put you back to 13th place.

It does mean that sometimes the number in queue isn't a good judgement, so there are a lot of complications.

Same here as far as getting to the single digits. I've never waited 40 minutes when my number was less than ten. I'm on Primal data center though, maybe OP is not?

How do you view the list where shows your place in line?

After a bit, the Duty finder tracker on the right will show your place in line: 5th , 24th.. whatever. It takes a little to update though.

That's true for the HW content, as well as a couple of the SB ones, however most of the longer cutscenes do not have that message anymore, and if people are actually reading or listening to the voice overlay, they will find themselves in a cutscene that would maybe take 5 minutes for people just partially paying attention, now that cut scene is 8 minutes.

They're not asking you to wait for them to finish the cutscene.

I definitely sympathize with the OP. When you hit escape and it asks you if you want to skip the cutscene, there should be a third "abort" option, which exits you from the cutscene but does not skip it, leaving you free to view it later. Until such time as such a thing is offered, the best suggestion I can make is to make sure you're watching cutscenes on the job that you're queued for, whenever possible...

Ah, but what gear do you switch to? If you have several weapons that job can use, which of those do you equip? What if an oh-so-clever player put that jobs' weapons onto a retainer after signing up for the queue? Remember that as second nature as equipment sets are to the average player, they are, technically, optional, and the player may not have a gear set for the system to remember. The system would need to make a bunch of assumptions in order to swap your job and put you into the instance. There are certainly ways a system like this could be implemented (and I'd welcome them!) but it's not necessarily a simple thing.

@ Lineagerazor You know that recommended gear option? the game could auto select that, and let you be on your merry way. But honestly? I keep all my gear sets for my 3 classes on me at all times, I really see no reason not to, the only gear i have anywhere other than my inventory that i dont intend to sell/desynth etc is my class gear/bikini's etc and they're in that chest in my Inn.

Queueing for roulettes gives you a role waiting list number, queueing direct gives you the x/x/y display. As a general rule, I stop doing stuff when it hits x/x/2, as that means you've been placed in the next party going in. Sometimes it takes a while to pop still, but it's usually pretty fast once the number ticks up.

EDIT: And I do agree with an "abort cutscene" option that lets you return to the start when you leave a duty. That would be really nice, and mean I don't have to gamble on whether it's in the book or not, or guesstimate how much longer it'll be...

Check for a gear set. If one isn't available, put on the gear that the recommendations window would display. If the weapon/gear is in the retainer and the duty had popped, you wouldn't be able to grab it out of the retainer (I've tried, once that duty ready window appears you can't move/sell gear around retainers, it errors out), so you'd have to abandon the queue or hope someone declines to get it out anyway. For me, it was a case of you'd spelled it out pretty clearly and with a suggestion on how to handle it so the others don't have to wait. Your suggestion is a fair compromise tbh. Another option could be go in as normal, after the duty, it either continues the cutscene from where you were up to, or brings up a popup asking you if you want to rewatch the cutscene. There's so many ways it could be done.

Tank here with super awesome happy queue times so here's my thoughts:
Accepting your queue should...
1) auto equip you with your job and with your highest ilvl inventory set (Of from saved sets but I don't know how much harder it would be than using the same code for what we already have)
2) should automatically cancel all actions in the world.
3) fail your leves, or, pausing/ignoring your position in front of the queue until you finish

You can watch cutscenes in your room. Skip the scene and accept the duty (Esc during cutscene),

i agree with the OP and i don't even usually suffer DPS queues. it's not only long cutscenes that get in the way, sometimes you just really want to pay attention to the dialog and once that thing pops you always feel rushed as you know other people are waiting for you.

if it pops it should just kick you out of the CS/dialog and let you restart it when you get out.

Yeah, IMO for the journal SE needs to make it so you can replay ALL cutscenes. Like I'm playing a Visual Novel right now, and it's nice that I can go back to a save and replay a conversation that I found funny or interesting.

Again, skip the cutscene and accept the duty. Simple.

Your claim that you're being "punished" by skipping the scene is objectively false. You can few the scene in your room right after the duty is finished. No difference between your suggestion to "reset" the cutscene. Both result in you being able to see the cutscene after the duty. If it's actually a cutscene, it will be in the book. If it's just dialogue, you can escape out of dialogue and it will reset like you want.

Are you sure? I seem to be missing some cutscenes from the WHM questline 60-70. If I skip them for duty, if they're not in The Unending Journey (and like I said, some seem to be missing), then my only recourse would be either new character or YouTube (assuming they're there). I don't think that's really fair.

Again, if it's an actual cutscene (meaning it cuts away and changes the camera angle, etc), you won't be missing it. When you're viewing cutscenes in your book, you have to click the arrow on the right side to see subsequent cutscenes in a "set".

If it's just dialogue, you don't have to speed through it, you can just press esc to cancel if the queue pops and it will reset dialogue.

@ Kaedan I said i'm not re-explaining it a third time. That implies you're not the first person in the thread to make that statement. As I answered it in my original 3 posts, then answered it again later to someone else. And It is far to assume someone didn't read it if you already gave the answer not once, but twice, and yet you ask the same question again. It's called reading comprehension, something they taught in schools when I was there. Paladinleeds has ALSO answered this several times, which lends credence to my assumption that you did not read it.

So let me spell it out for you you special little snowflake. And this is the last time I will. You, cannot view EVERY cutscene in the game, in the Unending Journey. If by chance I happen to skip a CS, that is not view-able in the Book, and am unaware that it is not there to be viewed later then I have been punished in the manner I have previously stated, and missed out on a piece of the story-line.

And my suggestion, as well as some other peoples suggestions in the thread, would remedy this entirely.

I even used italics/bold to emphasize important words to help clear it up for you.
