Fordola (spoilers)

I pray to the twelve that Lyse doesn't forgive her after what she did to Meffrid.
Anyone else agree? I just get a feeling Lyse's too nice and will forgive her.

Not much of a discussion, more of a thought and I had to get a sense if I'm the only one who thinks Lyse will end up forgiving her in the story?

I honestly hope that fordola gets a redemption arc, I thought she written awfully in 4.0. I was expecting complex questions regarding the good of the garlean empire and what we got was a monster blindly following the madman zenos

tbf Meffrid had it coming...she was standing still and the guy missed by miles..TWICE... no offense he sucked baddd.

She does deserve punishment for hurting Alisae... Maybe she will get some redemption... least she could do is spill some garleon secrets if she has them.

She's probably Conrad's granddaughter and/or the girl that old Yda saved. Maybe.

Only villain ended up dying in 4.0 is sends, all other villain survived. Which probably means they have plans for them. Fordola could end up being a npcs for return to ivalice story arc with lyse.

Not sure why she should be punished for fighting for the Garleans and its not like what his face got schooled for being bad with the blade. I mean I wouldn't put it past the savages to punish her or the conscripts that were captured for being on the wrong side anyways.

Fordola was merciless, yes - but that also applies to the Warrior of Light and his allies frequently as they end and ruin lives based entirely on someone's allegiance with little to no regard to the consequences. Meffrid's life isn't any more important than the life of a Garlean conscript or soldier given that they, too, likely have loved ones who will be heartbroken upon witnessing or hearing of their demise. In any conflict both sides believe what they are doing is righteous and there's rarely a winner. That's the entire point of war. It's messy. It's nuanced.

I mean, heck, there's a Garlean soldier who is killed by Alisae for striking the Warrior of Light when ambushed. We see through the Echo that same soldier happened to be the one who gave Yotsuyu a chance at a decent education and rescued her from a highly abusive family. Clearly he wasn't a bad guy at all and yet he was cut down as easily as Meffrid was.

When do I get a Wind-up Fordola.

Just because Lyse never forgive her does not mean they can't become friends after her atonement.

In a Gaius rule Fordola would have gotten her wish but Zenos, however, exploited that promise to make her into what she is in 4.0.

Heck some people actually become best friends in life despite that these people may have one thing they will never forgive each other for so they just look past that and look to the future instead of the past.

You gotta take it in the larger context. Her and her Skulls were raised to their positions while Gaius was still the power in Ala Mhigo. Once Gaius was out of the way, Zenos took over. Gaius was all about merit and work, so Fordola, working under the auspices of Gaius, worked her ass off to show that Ala Mhigans weren't just some backwards savage people, but in fact could do just as well as any other imperial citizen. Gaius would have approved, and he probably did (hence Fordola rem Lupis). Then along came Zenos, who cares not for any high-minded ideal. All he wants is to feel something, anything, and he does so enjoy watching lesser beings squirm. So he took Fordola, molded under Baelsar's rather noble ideology of "prove yourself via honest effort" and twisted her until he broke her.

It was all quite well done imo.

I did *not* see it that way. Given Yotsuyu's own admission of spending a good chunk of her life in abusive relationships, up to and including life in a brothel, I don't think the "education" this soldier offered her was of the academic sort. Good for her in the sense that she eventually came to exert power over her own life (in a sadistic, megalomaniacal sort of way), but also bad for her on account of what was probably a long period suffering a variety of abuses. In short, I don't think the soldier in question was all that altruistic when it came to Yotsuyu. Besides, he was in the process of actively trying to kill the WoL. In war it's kill or be killed, and all that matters afterwards is who is still alive.

Personally I took this scene as her turning point towards hating domans, her own people treat her like a slave and her brother was the one who came up with the idea that she should be sold off, the soldier in this scene offered to have her educated but they never implied he was the one that sold her or anything, if anything it shows why she sided with the garleans. They offered her a future, her family did not. Plus the soldier himself implied he held some sort of regard for her well being.

They make a point of explaining that in war, it's killed or be killed. Meffrid's demise was his own doing because he came at her with intent to kill, but wasn't skilled enough to follow through.

I think at the very least, Fordola will be kept around to try to understand that artificial Echo she has.

We sheltered and saved garlean soldiers after Fordola mercylessly killed her own troops with that cannon...troops that were just convinced by Conrad to lay down their weapons.

Exactly, we even healed a Garlearn soldier after the battle. I am quite sure that we would have been death if we were the prisoners of the Garleans and seeing the reactions of the Eorzean army, they would have never fired a gun in a tower with a lot of their own people in it. Also Pipin gave Alphinaud and the WoL the chance to talk some of the soldiers out of attacking us which we managed, thus we saved countless of lives.

And lets not forget: In the End it was Garlemald that conquered these states and yet Eorzea did not attack until they were forced by Ilbert. This is war and people will die but if the Garlearns had stayed in their country nothing like that would have happened. So I am kinda tired of people wanting to but the blame on the Eorzean alliance too. They do things wrong too but the aggressor is Garlemald and thus the Eorzean alliance has no chance other than going to war. And in war you will lose people.

He just asked the woman why the girl was not registered and if she should be educated too. We do not know the life of the man so it might be better not to assume that he is good or bad. In the end he could have been the one that searched for the man to sold her too. Also in the end he was a spy for the empire which would have been bad for the rebells. And when we had the echo version he tried to struck us and Alisea had to struck him down. It is war! You cant just go around and let spies like that live, simply because it could mean losing the war. Its the hard and horrible truth of war. There is simply no right nor wrong, but sides. Yet SE clearly showed with actions who was the worse side in this.

I lost all respect for Fordola after her rant when she was asked why she gave the order to fire the cannon. "It's not enough to simply do as you're told" would have been an ok explanation if it wasn't for the fact that pretty much everything she did (firing the cannon included) was just her doing exactly as Zenos told her.

Back in 1.0 and up to 2.0, our main antagonist was Gaius (With crazy Nael from 1.18 to 1.23). He claimed that he launched the conquest on Eorzea to save the World, and, in a twisted sense, he was right. Summoning primals or other deities actually hurt the planet. So, Garlemald destroyed Ala Mhigo...but stopped there, probably because the rest of Eorzea wasn't so keen on calling their gods. IIRC, Ala Mhigo was already in a turmoil under the reign on Theodoric, and maybe they thought to do the same as Ilberd in 3.55 back then.

On top of that, Gaius has proven that he didn't care at all about your origins, as long as you're competent and loyal. So, in fact, the whole "Garlemald treats Mhigans like shit" is basically a retcon. Maybe now that Zenos is in charge, but, when you hear the young mhigans, they claimed it was like that for the past 25 years...
And because of that, they wasted a perfectly good plot. It would have been awesome to confront the old generation that lost friends and home in the war with the new one, who is accepted into Garlemald because they grown into a Garlean "colony" under the rule of Gaius.

The fact that both generation feels oppressed makes Garlmeald just a bunch of cliché villains doing cliché villainous things, to the point of absurdity...why the hell are the young mhigans attacking us ? If we lose, they'll continue with their lives, and if we win...well, they'll continue with their lives, but under the rule of Lyse, who want nothing but peace.

So yeah, Yoshi-P kept his promise...I have no sympathy for Garleans this expansion...because they're dumb.

what!? from what i got about that flasback with the soldier and Yotsuyu is that she was sold to him as hes new wife and his the husband who she talked about and hated and don't forget she was forced to work in a brothel as well.

Gaius wasn't omniscient. No matter what his orders were, there were always going to be imperial soldiers that would treat the Abanians like trash, just like every single occupying force in real life has done. Gaius probably would have treated the majority like dirt anyway just because of how many gave up.

I think despite Gaius' best efforts there is a strong racial superiority complex within the Garlean people that almost certainly interferes with any efforts to integrate the Ala Mhigans into the Empire.

That was actually the one thing I disliked. After 25 years there would undoubtly be younger men and women who were fine with Garleans because that's all they knew. All we saw were people oppressed and scared to do anything because failure after failure. Though, it's not like it would have mattered if we saw those who were fine with the Garleans (excluding those already off the deep-end--Fordola and Yotsuyu) because Lyse would simply act as she always did when faced with people who had given up fighting: convince them that they're wrong (while failing spectacularly to see it from their pov and maybe softening her approach) and that they should in fact fight and the story would just give it to her because she's so inspiring.

In regards to Gauis not caring about your origins, I thought that he was an outlier compared to the rest of the Garleans. I could be wrong though.

There's a side quest in The Fringes that shows that Gaius spoke out against the development and testing of chemical weapons. That was a nice touch, but it's hidden away. They need to start showing the shades of grey where Garlemald is concerned within the MSQ's.

Much of Gaius' story is locked away in The Praetorium - which is more often than not skipped through and forgotten about these days. Regula's story takes place in The Warring Triad side quests...and then is never referenced again. There's a number of other side quests that deal with the better aspects of Garlemald but they're just that: side quests.

He probably was, but he reigned over Ala Mhigo before Zenos. And the mere idea of Rhitahtyn being betrayed because he was a Roegadyn angered him a lot, so I'm pretty sur his troops wouldn't dare to oppress the Mhigans back then.

There is a side quest in the peaks where you talk to an imperial officer named Baut, I highly recommend doing the chain as it sheds some light on Garlean rule. One of the things you learn is that actual process by which the Garleans rule over their countries actually drastically varies depending on where you go, per this NPC that had been an Imperial Centurion of no small standing for some two decades, to paraphrase, "the means by which the empire rules varies drastically, in some countries the empire essentially leaves things as they are while in other countries the citizens would welcome death with open arms."

So it sounds like a lot of the empire and the places they rule over does have some leaders that either leave the people alone (mostly) or actively take good care of them and in others we see what happened in Ala Mihgo under Zenos. The quest chain is in Ala Gihri (sp?) and again, highly recommend it, it's pretty informative.

Again, both Gaius and Zenos ruled over Ala Mhigo and Zenos is in charge only since Gaius' death. So, there's no way the Mhigans has been bullied for the whole 25 years like they said...which is what Fordola tries to use as justification for her act.
Doma, maybe, but there, Yotsuyu is even more a walking villain cliché than Zenos himself...

What makes a good villain is precisely that you could have sympathy for him. I don't understand why Yoshi-P made a very important focus to remove that feeling.

I feel like some of you might have skipped parts of the main quest and a few side-quests.


At one point, there are ala mhigans who were born under the garlean occupation that try to ambush us - in their eyes, we are the invader.
There is also a side-quest where the locals are urging you to stop the alliance from executing one of the enemy commanders, whom according to them always treated them fairly and found a way to give them their lives back, going out of his way to ensure none of the grunts abused them.



There is plenty of grey, most of it feels obfuscated by the main scenario quest but if you go looking for it it's definitely there.



Furthermore, on an earlier side-quest there is also mention of how Gaius stopped eorzea from being attacked with chemical weapons, act he condemned - the fact zenos didn't pursue the same avenue goes to show that (at least to some extent) they too follow some form of war ethic (but that's just speculation).

No, they don't attack us because we're "invaders", they attack us because they're convinced we will lose against the empire, and that they'll suffer even more as an aftermath, so they try to stop us before.

I don't think so. Zenos just likes to fight. Killing masses with chemicals just isn't interesting to him. This is not ethic, this is just a whim.

Frankly, compared to Gaius and Regula, Zenos is just a really bland villain.

But wasnt it the attack of the Garlean that killed Midgardsormr and destroyed the seal on the lake that kept some of the primals away from the world? And this is the reason they stopped the further conquest on Eorzea? And lets not forget that Ramuh was summoned because the Garlear are destroying the forest and the sylphs were afraid of them.

I only know Gaius from 2.0 since I never played 1.0 so I dont know much about him but didnt Yoshida say that it was not their intent to have people like him thus they created Zenos? Also he still saw us as lesser people because we had no such technology and he also ordered the attack on the old scions base thus killing lots of people even someone innocent as the sylph.

I also have quite the negative opinion about Garlemald (not each person but the empire itself and the ones ruling it). They do not only remind me of the roman empire but also about old Germany that started the third world war. Doing experiments on prisoners, their belief that they are the better race and their belief to kill the savages of the beast tribes, not caring that there are differences between them and that not all of them are under primal influence.

We also see how the soldiers from conquered countries dont really want to fight for them but have to out of fear for their family and that they would join our side as soon as they see that we win. Also they are destroying the cultures and belief of their conquered countries and seeing the river near one of their bases..well their are not really that good for the nature too.

Also I agree, they are a bit stupid too. I mean we have Zenos that is given free reign in Ala Mhigo even though his father new that he was a monster. Thus he created hate in these states which is a good way to start a rebellion. Also he killed his own people too which I am not really sure is a good way to keep people loyal. And instead of threating the children of parents from conquered countries as the same as their own they are creating a bad situation for themselves.

I mean if their only reason to conquer the countries is to save the world from primals, why destroy the pride and culture of conquered states that have nothing to do with primals? Why not let the villages do their old work, letting them earn money thus making them happier? I know that there are some good Garlearns that improved the situation in their country (even though I kinda wonder if they truly did it or if this is the belief of the children that grew up under their rule?) but looking at the story it seems that they are not the common ones.

I think in the lore book it was only stated that they had to live in a cold harsh country because they could not go behind the ones that had magic, but I am not sure that Eorzea had any hands in this. They could have used their technology to secure their own border and maybe have a trade with other states but they choose to conquer the world with it.

Slightly tangential, but I promise it ties back. Castrum Abania was full to the brim with references to the Magitek Research Facility in FFVI down to the bosses and seeing people that were enhanced by some process I still don't entirely understand.

Fordola agreed to this procedure even though it's still experimental after which she mercilessly kills her own people just to make sure that her enemies die. This is another FFVI allusion from when Kefka poisons the water source of Doma Castle to ensure an empyreal victory knowing that his actions would not only kill the Domans but also his own men. While there are definitely distinctions between the two, I do suspect that we're seeing the beginnings of this game's version of Kefka, and we're definitely not done with her. Kefka was also locked away for his crimes only later to be let go and he then went on to destroy the entire planet.

I kinda agree with this. I have nothing against villains who act on whimsy and just wanna have fun / stomp people / etc, but this seemed like kind of an odd incarnation of that role, with how it was merged with a villain who's apparently been efficiently snuffing out rebellion for years. The kind of "mad dog" villain (for lack of a better name) is best when they answer to no-one, which is the case with Kefka in the last half of FF6. With Zenos though, while he certainly does things his own way, he's ultimately shackled by the job he's been given, even if he does make use of that job to his own ends.

It makes it feel like he's two villains who're kinda just smashed together, the guy who's this cold rebellion-crushing dictator, and the guy who couldn't care much less about a province rebelling if he could trade them for a good fight. (Which...)

Do you think Fordola is going to be the start of people building resentment towards people with the echo? This was once hinted at in 1.0 and hasn't really reared its head yet.

It could be possible that Fordola, after being rejected by both ala Mighans and the The Empire and seeing the Accolades being given the WoL, start to grow an obsession for the person that took everything away from her starting with Gaius....and attempting to wreck both sides for it.

I think that the method used to take down Fordola might be kept around to use on the WoL in case they go out of control. They could easily become the next Zenos under the right circumstances

Why didn't our using Urianger's Patented Aether Boom(tm) to knock Fordola about rebound on us as well, as we also use the Echo?

Zenos also made some interesting allusions to the fact we haven't even started to tap into what our Echo is capable of.

It wasn't pointed as us, it looked to be a targeted tool.

Also, Zenos is but one example of many who have seemed to tap into the echo far deeper than we have, although they have a running theme, these uses seem to be at a terrible cost to either humanity or mortality(figuratively "selling your soul"). It is almost certain that the gift, wherever it comes from, it isn't one that is granted by Hydaelyn, since the Ascians use it as well.

Urianger explained that the reason why the Aether Boom only effected Fordola was because her body wasn't used to manipulating aether and whatnot. So it created a disruption in the aether which overloaded her senses.

Not exactly, it was because her senses were turned to pick up the minute aether movements that came with an attack. It was like using a flashbang on someone.

It could be possible that a similar device can be made for us,but since the main worry was Fordola anticipating the attack if we knew how it worked, changes would have to be made to make sure it is something we do not see coming or cannot avoid.
