Wh.. what... Nael is officially a woman... what is this.. I don't even...

So the lyrics of Rise of the White Raven are cannoically wrong then and even Urianger's musings during the Coil storyline are all now retconned as incorrect. I just can't wrap my head around this....

EDIT: and I really shouldn't skim read through it, as rereading it more closely, it does now make sense - Eula took her older brother's identity in the Garlean Military, so the army's records at least would have all registered Nael as a man (of course given how advanced Garlean technology is it's doubtful she could have maintained the ruse medically for long, but the fact she developed a reputation for being merciless and aggressive would have probably cowed anyone foolish enough to try and dig up that particular little skeleton in her closet. And from that everyone else, including the Eorzean Alliance, the Circle of Knowing/Path of the Twelve/Scions of the Seventh Dawn (and in particular Urianger), would have also swallowed the lie too. It all makes sense. :D

But are they retconned? Remember, the lyrics of the songs for Primals (and Nael, as well) are often sung from the point of view of their followers. Notable exceptions being Shiva and Ravana, of course. But with regards to Titan, Leviathan, Ramuh, the Good King, and quite a few of the Alexander themes, all are sung from the point of view of their respective beast tribes. Rise of the White Raven is no different. At no point in the lyrics does it use the word "I". It always says "he" or "his."

Is it a clever, if kinda-sorta flimsy, explanation? Yeah. Does it work within our past understanding of the game? I believe so.

Nael's backstory officially confirms she was a chick.

Both Regula and Zenos seem way more/just as interesting anyway, Regula has the same type of loyalty for an Emperor and especially Zenos seems like he'll be interesting because YoshiP stressed learning about him and his motives in SB and the fact that he's part of the Royal family.

I bet his dad was the Uncle Varis overthrew to become Emperor

If that were true there wouldn't be relatively detailed information on the Calamities or Eula / Nael's backstory, cuz from the sounds of it she killed everyone who knew her true sex before assuming the role of "Nael van Darnus."

When can we pre-order this book???????

After spending six hours in various official and/or unofficial-but-no-one-told-them lines, I've finally secured one of these things and (after making time for some of the nicest friends ever) am ready to tear into it a bit (but only a bit - still so much to do this weekend).

To respond to the bits in the thread so far:

NAEL
All in all, it sounds like a nice clean-up. We knew that all of Nael's 1.0 assets (and, truth be told, ARR assets sans the modded head and hair) were male, and we knew that, while there didn't seem to be consensus on much in 2012, not everyone did assume Nael to be a man. Turn 9, then, seemed like a manifestation of one interpretation of Nael, and one that has apparently now grown to be the dominant and canonized figure. Does it fit with everything we had before now? Not perfectly. Is it conclusive and can we move on? Thank the Twelve, yes.

Many problems addressed more explicitly (given specific attention) in the lore book seems to be things where the stitches were already showing. It was clear that some things were decided earlier, and some things were decided later, and sometimes plans changed. It's not a surprise, then, that some of the stitches might still show a bit even when polished up and laid down as hard canon.

For example, the book defines Corguevais as probably-Ascian despite 1.0 setting the rule that Ascians have no shadows - we ruled him out when that rule still stood (or at last from our POV should have been consistent with Travanchet).

But hard-canon citations are worth their weight in gil. Truth counts most.

GAIUS
Welp, "at best he's not yet deader than dead" seems to be "deader than dead" after all.

I'll let you know if this opinion changes as I go through the book, but it seems to "know best".
e.g. Everyone in Eorzea calls phurbles voidsent, but here they're listed as Elementals.

Really excited to read more on the race lore. Hopefully it just doesn't tread on things we already know.

Short-hand confirmation of a few things:

The Rejoining is about re-consolidating enough aether into the Source to restore Zodiark.

The Ascian overlords do seem to be one from each world. Nabriales from the Twelfth, Igeyorhm form the Thirteenth. Igeyorhm's machinations resulted in a Flood of Darkness, robbing the world of its aether and negating both life and death. Starved of aether, the entities within became twisted and monstrous. She served Lahabrea as an act of redemption for this failure to secure a Rejoining.

The Ascian cast out of the First was Mitron.

Elidibus - even in his mission to Rejoin the worlds while preventing them from being lost to the Floods - remains a steadfast servant to the will of the Dark.

I'd love to stay up all night dumping more little clarifications and tid-bits in here, but I must sleep.

Rest assured: The book covers the knowns as of 3.3, fills in the gaps (especially ones pointed out through this very forum), gives hard-canon to things that were vague and/or have been adjusted, and contains new information in general. It's a very healthy mixed bag of "types" of information, and seems to be all-but-exhaustive and, for the most part, "seeing things from an accurate angle". I would recommend it to one and all, if for no other reason than it's just beautiful. I can say more about it when I've read it fully, but (as if there was any doubt) no effort was spared in making a sincere and thorough world companion.

Once I'm home from Fan Fest, I'll go page by page and see how many of our concerns have been knocked off forsooth.

I look forward to getting back to archiving what things are known / might be known more accurately with a bit of elbow grease / are vague / are intangible. The pre-Fest boredom was a good opportunity to get back into vague future prediction for fun and (lack of) profit ... but, as usual, not my forte. I understand what is much better than what will be, lol.

Hey, I got the core of the Rejoining right!

The Ascians each being from a different world was... predictable enough. I had at least figured they were at least each stationed there... perhaps they're all fractured, distorted images of one original being? Which would explain how Lahabrea and Igeyorhm were able to fuse into the Ascian Prime... but I digress. There's no relation between their numbered Reflection and their Zodiac sign number, so no Ivalice correlation! Stop bringing Ivalice up, please...

Voidsent confirmed to be warped former denizens of the Thirteenth. Nice job breaking it, Iggy! Voidsent are easier to deal with than the fracking God of Darkness... well, assuming He is malevolent as we've been led to believe... so...

The First was merely being flooded, Hydaelyn at the end of 3.4 sent Minfillia there to act as a syphon or something along those lines to soak up all that positive aether to restore some of Hydaelyn's strength. So the First wouldn't produce "Lightsent."

I am very pleased. A lot of my speculation and desires for Garlean related lore has proven to be along the right lines. :)

Well, I'm eager to see if this other Galvus person is as sexy as his Emperor relative.

My only question for people with the Lore book right now: who the hell is Salina? Probably not a detail deemed worthy of elaboration, but it has bugged me for nearly two years now.

The section of Salina (assuming that it's the only mention of her, haven't read everything yet) says that she was descended from Xande the First, survived the quakes, and watched the fall of technology lead to utter chaos. When she realized that the Crystal Tower was not gone, just buried, she realized that someone with a blood connection to Xande's pact would always be needed should the Cloud of Darkness need to be put in check. Entrusting the bloodline to a trusted ally via what little technology still functioned, it's still seen in the G tribe of Seekers of the Sun today.

Is there anything in the lorebook about Roegadyn?

I love how I instantly called it to my friends, that the person in the trailer is most likely Yda's sister. Too many things felt wrong when people thought she was Yda. (Longer hair, larger bust, no neck tattoos)

Hm, that's weird. Not a single thing about Roegadyn in here after all. ;)

They come from the bleak isles Northern Empty, where many fled from Aerslaent (First Land) from a despotic ruler roughly 700 years ago (eventually leading to the founding of Limsa Lominsa). This group was separate from those who came to north Abalathia's Spine earlier and would become the Hellsguard. Though most Roegadyn we see are Hellsguard or Sea Wolf, though, other clans (and the clanless) exist elsewhere all over the world. Even Garlemald has Roegadyn officers. Roegadyn respect strength, and rarely respect those without it (in some capacity, not necessarily physical) unless there is coin involved. Because of this, even much of their dress is meant to reveal the physique.

84 to 90" tall for males 75" to 87" tall for females. Their hair is tough, but thick, and may contain a natural wave. Many take pride in their locks, hence the attention braids and beads. (I just noticed that it says augter instead of daughter in the nomenclature. Can't tell if purposeful. Doesn't seem so.) The Sea Wolves are able fishers and, though they use a degree of salt for taste and preservation, they don't over-dress their food to any degree of pretension.

The Hellsguard believe that firewalking rituals bring out their latent magickal talents, and many great mages have come from northern Abalathia in addition to the fearsome warriors you would expect. However, from this harsh and unforgiving climate, their culture harnesses utility and functionality with almost no flair, and believe in letting nothing go to waste.

I mean, it confirms my suspicion that she was of the "waning" royal blood that was (allegedly) responsible for Allag's pre-Xande-Zombie decline to begin with, and therefore of suspect authority when it comes to determining what's best for people, and presents the possibility that G'raha was grossly misinterpreting the wishes of his ancestors by sealing himself inside if all they really wanted was for someone to nullify the pact (which Doga and Unei did without him). Whether any of this has any bearing on the future is anyone's guess (with Eureka on the horizon, maybe?). My naive side wants to believe that Darklander's parting words were some kind of foreshadowing, but probably not.

With that sorta cleared up, I'm also wondering if they've set something in stone about the cause and nature of that initial decline, since Doga and Unei say it was a combination of weak royalty and the prosperity brought by the Tower causing actual, recognizable problems in the Empire, but G'raha's NOAH reports refuse to specify, and his actions at the end only work if you disregard Doga and Unei's explanation (not to mention the "this door can only be opened by the royal blood" plot point verified by no less than three sources, which just means that opening it otherwise is the same as eliminating the stated necessity of preserving the royal blood to begin with). I'm sure there are ways to sort it out without some sort of ancient Allagan conspiracy theory (which would still be a neat plot for an expansion), but there's nothing like that in game.

Since the Lore book is at a lower pirority for me (sadly) then the Topaz carby plush and Fanfest streams but I'm still impatient, I want to know a couple things

• Lalafellin Lore
• Lore behind the Esoteric and Anima weapons (either here or on the Anima thread)

Do we finally get some info on the 80 Sins of Sasamo?

I'm curious if there's anything new to be found on Seeker lore considering the one in-game example appears to be an exception to the rule. Though please don't trouble yourself over it!

They mentioned Xaela and Raen specifically, but what of the much much older Au Ra clan mentioned by Oda last year? Though I suppose "lore-wise" they are hidden and not known for the time being since the book is based off of npc knowledge.

That's Mumuepo, the former Thaumaturge's guild Master. Nowadays he's the boss from Halatali Hard. I think his robes were never made available to players.
Although 1.0 had more variety of textures for cloths, that shiny silk was exclusive to him, if I remeber correctly.

Speaking of Lalafells has anyone looked at their section yet> I still want to see their clans lore and if I'm likely to have Azys Lla's mutant fish in my family tree :P

I gotta join in on the racial lore requests: I've theorized for a while about Au Ra being related to demons in some way or another, is there anything in the lore book about their physiology that may hint at this? I've heard about their horns and tails, but what else is there?
