So the lyrics of Rise of the White Raven are cannoically wrong then and even Urianger's musings during the Coil storyline are all now retconned as incorrect. I just can't wrap my head around this....

EDIT: and I really shouldn't skim read through it, as rereading it more closely, it does now make sense - Eula took her older brother's identity in the Garlean Military, so the army's records at least would have all registered Nael as a man (of course given how advanced Garlean technology is it's doubtful she could have maintained the ruse medically for long, but the fact she developed a reputation for being merciless and aggressive would have probably cowed anyone foolish enough to try and dig up that particular little skeleton in her closet. And from that everyone else, including the Eorzean Alliance, the Circle of Knowing/Path of the Twelve/Scions of the Seventh Dawn (and in particular Urianger), would have also swallowed the lie too. It all makes sense.

But are they retconned? Remember, the lyrics of the songs for Primals (and Nael, as well) are often sung from the point of view of their followers. Notable exceptions being Shiva and Ravana, of course. But with regards to Titan, Leviathan, Ramuh, the Good King, and quite a few of the Alexander themes, all are sung from the point of view of their respective beast tribes. Rise of the White Raven is no different. At no point in the lyrics does it use the word "I". It always says "he" or "his."

Is it a clever, if kinda-sorta flimsy, explanation? Yeah. Does it work within our past understanding of the game? I believe so.

No, it goes even beyond that - the confusion about the gender of Nael is in the original Japanese too. The White Raven lyrics were commissioned as if Nael was a guy, the role was written for a dude and the confusion of Alisaie is in all versions of the script, because the art team always intended for Nael to be a woman and for the ARR content to contain a big unmasking event... one that the writing team didn't get wind of until Nael's T9 model was done.

It was a breakdown of communication and it's a multi-pronged mistake, and assigning blame to just one section of Development 5 isn't fair in this case.

Would it be alright if I made a separate thread for discussion of the origins of the Spoken races, their clans and their evolution?

I would be down because a number of my private theories got proven right (all Dunesfolk are Mhachi! Nym was originally majority-Plainsfolk and some of them eventually came back to Limsa!) and attentive reading more or less stops exactly short of spelling out the origins of the Au Ra.

Both Regula and Zenos seem way more/just as interesting anyway, Regula has the same type of loyalty for an Emperor and especially Zenos seems like he'll be interesting because YoshiP stressed learning about him and his motives in SB and the fact that he's part of the Royal family.

I bet his dad was the Uncle Varis overthrew to become Emperor

If that were true there wouldn't be relatively detailed information on the Calamities or Eula / Nael's backstory, cuz from the sounds of it she killed everyone who knew her true sex before assuming the role of "Nael van Darnus."
