Playstation VR

I'm having trouble finding out whether FF14 will be compatible with the Playstation VR when it comes out next month. I've seen it running on the VR but the demos are all from last year. There hasn't been a lot of info about it since then but I assume they're still making the game compatible with the VR. Anyone happen to know more about it and when the game will be available for the VR?

Nothing to really note about it. Since the game does have a first person view

Ik they said it would have vr but I really don't see it being more than just doing quests or running around town. Theres no way you could do any kind of content in 1st person, even dungeons.

Imagine doing dungeons and having white mages spamming holy <.<

They specifically said the opposite actually. They have no intention of adding VR support for the game. The Titan thing they demoed previously was just a publicity thing and a showcase for VR.

For those that aren't aware, running a game in VR requires it to be rendered twice, once for each eye. It will be impossible for any existing console games to be ported to VR due to them already using the majority of the system resources. The PS4 will not be capable of rendering any existing game twice. Any future PSVR titles will have been built from the ground up especially for it.

Let's not even get into how impractical it would be to play this game in a first person perspective...

I do not care much about doing content, but i sure would love to be able to explore, walk around, and chill in VR mode.

I'm sorry but no your point doesn't still stand. You said that they had confirmed the game would have VR compatibility yet Yoshi explicitly said the opposite so your point was simply wrong...

The Titan fight demoed on PSVR was a dev build made just for that event to promote PSVR. You couldn't do much beyond look around and use a very limited number of abilities. It was a glorified tech demo. I'm also fairly certain it was running on a PC via a devkit and not an actual PS4 as the console would not be able to push the constant 60FPS required to not get motion sickness in VR.

Neither do most 3DS games (or virtual boy games), but they don't really seem to have a problem with that.

The part in bold was the point I was arguing against and I think it was fairly obvious as well. The part in bold is wrong.

As for a source, it was in the Live Letter immediately following TGS last year. Yoshi responded to a question about it and said there are no plans for a VR version of the game. I'm not about to go and spend an hour looking for it though.

As I said before, a VR version of the game as a direct port would not be at all feasible due to way VR effectively requires double the processing power. If a VR version of FFXIV were to happen they would have to rebuild a lot of stuff from the ground up to ensure it could run at 60FPS per eye (in other words the hardware would have to be capable of running the game at near 120FPS normally). There is absolutely zero chance of that ever happening just to add a gimmicky build of the game that only a fraction of the playerbase would have access to. It would be a monumental waste of money to do.

Triple monitor setup is the next best thing, for the PC version anyway.

It can be handy for situational awareness in raids, adding immersion, and spreading out UI elements. Very nice if you're not too concerned with bezels.

Not to mention, that VR still has so many problems. The headset won't fit everyone. (I can't wear one period). People still get motion sick even at 60fps, not all gamers want their peripheral vision completely blocked while playing a game, some reports of migraines from the headsets, and on and on.

I will honestly be surprised if vr catches on as anything more than a niche after a few years. I don't think our bodies deal with the sensory issues well which will keep it from ever being completely mainstream.

The problems will be ironed out with time. The root cause of them is that we're still learning how to best handle certain things in VR and it's all a massive learning process both in terms of the hardware and the software. VR can and likely will go mainstream eventually but it's probably going to be a few years before we have a firm understanding of how things need to be handled to trick the brain without inducing sickness for some people. For most people the current hardware is more than enjoyable though. I personally have absolutely no problem at all with the Vive and a few of the games have been completely mind blowing.

The real thing holding it back from going mainstream at this point is just the price. The Oculus and Vive are the only headsets that are worth getting as they are technically superior in every single way by a factor of hundreds, but they cost as much a brand new gaming PC. The PSVR has a solid shot at changing that but THAT really depends on Sony having a solid lineup of launch titles that aren't just gimmicky arcade games.

You are correct though that as it stands right now there's no way SE would risk developing for it.

FFXIV is VR capable, it is a requirement of the playstation that all games are VR capable. This is not the same as the dev team supporting VR.

"sigh" what I put in bold was my point. whether it is or isn't happening doesn't matter to me. I have no plans to waste money on any kinda of vr. sorry if I may be wrong, since ffxiv was posted everywhere to be a part of PSVR. as for live letters, I haven't watched one since 2.x. If you don't watch or even read the live letters how in the hell can you claim they said the game would have VR.

lolwhat ? u know I'm saito right? and the same could be said for saying that he said it on live letter but not wanting to show it. like i said, whether it is or isn't going to vr wasnt my point. its was that you couldn't do any real content other than quests and walking around in 1st person. All I really want to do with it is use the screen as a monitor and play the game on my control pad. I'm not interested in turning my head to look around. I want it for crafting and harvesting. I read somewhere that it has cinematic mode which allows you to play games and use the VR as the monitor. I was just curious about whether Square Enix had to patch the game first for it to recognise the VR. From what I've read, it should work with all games in the manner I intend to use it - as a screen.

Well, I know 1.0 had stereoscopic functionality. Used it a few times myself.
It would probably be as difficult as activating another camera at a set distance from the first. Yeah the double rendering would hurt framerate, but then again, so does higher graphic settings in general.
Also, 2D effect tricks would always render at the same distance.

There's a "theatre mode" in PSVR.

This game is absolutely sickening in first person for anything other than just idly walking around.

Think you misread something somewhere.
It is not a requirement that all playstation games support vr at all

I think the requirement you're referring to is that all games that do support vr must be 60fps.

I'm not that fussed about vr anyway. I doubt it'll last very long. It's like every super new thing. It'll only work for as long as games support it. Look at ps move. Massive hype. Didn't take off cos hardly any games worked with it which meant no one bought it. And because no one bought or had it. Devs stopped adding it to games.

3d was the same so was kinect. The average consumer won't buy the vr headset for just a couple of vr games. And the devs won't keep pushing vr if the average consumers aren't buying the headsets.

Honestly as someone who owns the Oculus Rift, I really would like this game to be playable in VR on pc at least. It is doable and honestly, it differs per person who can handle what. I for one have zero issues with nausea.

Well, such reactions (motion sickness in particular) is a main reason why it's taken so long for VR to make it onto regular widely available systems. (It's been in the works for decades.) Improvements in the technology have been making it more and more viable, to the point where now, it works well for the vast majority of people. There are still a few who are particularly susceptible to motion sickness who may not do well even with modern VR headsets, but that's no longer so commonplace as it was a few hardware generations ago.

It's still probably a good idea to limit game sessions to be a bit shorter on a VR headset than what a lot of people do using regular screens, though.

Well, they're all compatible with the PSVR's cinematic mode (i.e. watching it on a virtual screen within the VR space). But it takes extra development effort to support genuine virtual reality where you're within the game world.

Hmm in terms of FF14, i do not think the Playstation 4 Pro can handle VR. FF14 simply uses most of the system already, i dont think there is much left to do VR for it.

Motion sickness regarding VR really only effects those who already suffer from it in Cars, trains etc in the current headsets. For everyone else it has pretty much been eliminated. The new easy is Graphical and godrays as well as red tints and blacks.

I've wondered about this too. What I'd really like is 3rd person VR, where we're within the game world but able to see our character, with our own perspective hovering nearby, the same as camera position does now.

Chronos is a nice example of that. It is a great game and not first person, while it is an RPG.

So while we may see some sort of VR minigame or tech demo involving FFXIV one day SE has no intentions of making the game itself VR compatible any time soon. These are the sources against it can you provide sources to back your claims that you said it will be?

There's a game on the Occulus I tried that's a 3rd person platformer (no idea what it's called, I don't have any VR equipment), worked well when friends weren't messing with the camera location thingamajig and making it a nauseating experience. Not sure why people are assuming it HAS to be 1st person.

I believe you are probably refering to "Lucky's Tale" which was actually a fairly good use of VR in a 3rd person aspect. Reminded me a lot of playing board games like mouse trap with my family as a kid. I would say that while this game will likely support (since the PS4 itself supports it) cinema mode which I am guessing would be similar to the old Sony HMZ-Tx (in my case HMZ-T1) series of HMD's they used to market before VR was a thing I dont see them implementing that in this game just due to the game not really being designed for VR in any capacity. The old HMZ line of HMD's sony made simulated the look of sitting in a theater looking at a massive screen more than a VR experience which I think would probably be how they go about this for at least the PS4. I am sure for the PC there will be (if not already) some mods available to give it a pseudo VR look but as far as the game itself... while I am a firm believer that VR is a great thing I just dont see how they could make it work whether from a first person or third person view for this game without a lot of major reworks that quite frankly I do not see the developers investing in any time in the near future and am skeptical even for it in the distant future.

It would be too bad if this game didn't support VR as I would love that feature for roleplaying. :/

Titan looked huge in VR, lol

I highly doubt it, if you look at the limitations for the VR look up Batman VR game play. Very restricted, no actual fighting, and the VR is more of an accessory. It's still very early on and perhaps in a few years first person might be a possibility.
