Mellee Healer Geomancer

What if Geomancer was a healer with a 2 handed hammer that stood toe to toe with enemies using water to mend , flame to cauterize wounds and wind to dry the tears of battle weary companions? In this healers tool kit you could have abilities that heal nearby party members as he attacks , vines that could spring from the gound slowing and debuffing enemies from blunt damage, all while dancing in a mellee style combat. Mellee Healer - make it happen.

I would say that any skilled healer will not be in ranged except for mechanics requirement

Like do you really see a whm behind his group ?
If the answer is yes, ask him to hand over his staff

All healer should be be in melee range or close range (3/5 yalms)
Because because far away kill all his spell so... It's dumb to run away

The only one that can go a bor far away is the scholar that put his fairy near the melee
Because she is his main heal tool

Geomancer could very well be a healer that fights melee distance, but you can\\'t reliably heal if you need to dart all over the area. Having a ton of AOE heals may work, but in practice.... Ehh.

I\\'m just concerned about my ranged DPS or tanks that have to spread out to handle adds. A melee focused healer would be screwed if they were forced to solo in such situations, rendering the job undesirable.

Geomancer\\'s (or toaist or feng shui warrior depending on the game or language) entire gimmick is that they wield certain skills that change dramatically depending on the terrain they fight on. Different potencies, additional effects, etc. They also equip bells in most games they appear in.

Geomancer would need some intense redesigning to operate as a healer or melee.

Why on earth would any healer, all of which are squishy mages, be in melee range when literally every skill we have affords us PLENTY of room to stay out of danger while keeping everyone else in danger alive?

As you kind of pointed out, the only time I need to get up my tank's butt outside of the obvious dodging of attacks with range or stacking mechanics is when someone (tank or myself) derp and I need to get them back on a mob I have aggro for.

There is zero benefit to standing right in the thick of combat as a healer.

Coming from a whm it's HIGHLY surprising
Because melee range give you access to fluid aura à good dps gain
You can auto attack between spell (minor dps gain)
It favor holy because you are sure to hit everyone
If you put asylum you're healed too
You can aoe heal with cure 3 instead of shitty medica
If you got aggro you don't move the tank is here
If there is huge cone aoe you dodge them with one step on the side instead of sprint all the way out which almost never work because cone aoe have fast cast

The only downfall is that player target circle aoe will Land in melee range disrupting melee dps because it add one more to dodge

Otherwise there is only benefit to be melee range as caster ! (Heal or dps)

BTW healer are not squishy
They are 3rd in line went it come to tanking
Tank > dragoon > heal

In my case I have nearly 19k5 hp as AST...
Which is almost more than all dps i encounter
So explain the squishyness of a healer ?

Id play a melee healer. I think a potion-based class would be a better fit for it that a geomancer class tho. Geomancer sounds like too much of a Mage-class to be close range. I like your idea tho OP.

For physical damage at least tanks mitigate 30% of damage just from their armor. DDs mitigate 15-25% (more for Dragoons, less for ranged DPS). Healers/casters only mitigate 10%.

Sure, you may have more HP, but most of those melee DDs have an extra 15% effective health from their better defense from their armor.

healer should NOT stay in melee range for healing. they should stay between the melees and the ranged. not in melee range, but also not far away. who should stay in melee range is the WHM - for dpsing. Fluid Aura and Holy (and Assize but the range is huuuge) are all melee-dps skills.

All healers should be in melee range at all times, even if it's just for autoattacking, unless mechanics require them to be elsewhere. There's no downsides to being in melee range, and you have enough mobility to move away if necessary. In fact, all ranged players should be in melee range as well. Everyone should be in melee range. There's no reason for anyone to stand somewhere in the back of the party unless, again, mechanics require it. Bonus points for making the healers' lives easier.

Okay, but that's irrelevant. No ones asking about tanking DDs or individual survivability.

It's about practicality. A healer cannot be within melee range of all party members at all times.

Take Nidhogg, for example. His hitbox is so large that the main tank is quite a distance away from the rest of the group. You can't expect a healer to run back and forth to heal both sides (not to mention Nidhoogs fire breath starts from the center of his hitbox so you'd likely get cleaved)

Or mechanics like Ifrit EX/A7S where the healer is forced away from the group due to exploding AOE.

For niddhogg despite the huge hitbox
If the whm is in the center or near the center if his hit box
Cure 3 is able to heal everyone
You just have to place yourself carefully for the cleave

Well, people seem to have discarded the idea that Geomancers could merely be healers that are extra encouraged to stand in melee range. Healing spells with the established range, but instead of using spells to fight, they could simply have melee skills to smack enemies with, similar to Paladins and Mistweavers from WoW, or Chanters and Clerics in Aion (though Clerics are admittedly significantly more castery than Chanters).

Heck, just steal the Chanter's fighting toolkit where most of your melee skills add murderous debuffs and make Geomancer an enfeebling healer, sort of. It'd be more interesting than a third White Mage clone that ultimate fails in practice. :p

AST and SCH tool kits don't require you to be in melee range for any skills beyond auto-attack, which is a pathetically small boost in damage in the vast majority of content. I am not in the Raid scene, so I can't speak for the specific mechanics of such fights.

So, I was wrong in 0 benefit, but the arguments giving are so painfully situational that it feels like a bad habit to get into. A healer should place themselves in the center of the party.

White Mage is the one healer I haven't taken to 60 yet, so I don't have practice on Assize.

Also, if a ranger is out of Medica/Succor/Helios range, there is a good chance they aren't taking constant damage from an attack save for a raid wide impact. IF THAT IS THE CASE, then said ranger should be informed to move in for the AOE heals required. That's only one step up from not standing in stupid, and if that's too hard then keeping you alive is a waste of MP.

Yes, and since the entire party should be in melee range behind the boss, you should also be there. There's no reason for people to be standing in random places around a boss room unless mechanics require it. Hell, both of the physical ranged have abilities that require them to be in melee range (Repelling Shot, Blank, Suppressive Fire), and there's no reason for a SMN not to take the small, but free extra DPS from booksmacking given their high mobility (same goes for every healer). BLMs are about the only job that has somewhat of an excuse to stand somewhere that is not directly behind the boss, because their DPS suffers the most from movement (especially if Leylines is up), but even they have enough utility (procs and teleport) to be with the group as much as possible.

And for the AST being in melee range help in case of RR spread card because he throw it on himself while dpsing and everyone is buff tank include

Auto-attack seems pathetic for you but i can tell you that every little dps increase is good to take
Either casual content or raid content

Beside

You don't inform a dps to stand with the group
It should be a natural thing for him
If he don't... Letting him eat the ground is a good way to teach him

Well, it's a small AoE around you (5 or 6y), but since its total potency is just 70 (20 initial + 50 from the DoT), it's really only worth it on 3+ enemies (2+ in level 50 content) that live for at least 9 more seconds, otherwise you just Broil or Blizzard II (on 4+ enemies). It should never be used on bosses.

Honstly, a more diverse cast of healer playstyles would be amazing. Borrowing a few archetypes found in Rift (such as the damaging-while-healing mechanics of Chloromancer) would definitely fit well in the current meta for healers in FFXIV.

A melee healer would be interesting, but they would require either or all ranged single-target healing spells, cleanse and large AoE heal radius or a reenvision version of the core healer kit. Being able to heal at a distance is something that must be considered as there are already existing mechanics that require healers to be at a distance. While there are often times where everyone is glued to the boss' "circle", certain mechanics such as Ifrit EX, AS7 and even AS8 long needles would require a ranged heal.

I could see Geomancers have a heavy side on placed field-AoEs, but granted how all field-AoEs are based off the server ticks (look at Collective Unconscious), there would be chunkiness and unreliability to it. If anything, their DPS could be melee oriented or have a potency increase dependent on distance (look at Archer/Bards PvP sweetspot) between them and the foe.
