Forever Taken, Level Eleventy Million Aggro Mobs, and You

Why in the name of the Twelve are there Pteroctraps and Efts higher level than the current /max player level/ guarding all the entrances to Mor Dhona, a zone which is basically only used for a few plot quests, the first of which is at level 34?

I've tried to make the run from Crimson Bark a few times now, since it's obviously the "way in" to where you're supposed to do the quest. I remember getting all the way through Mor Dhona on low level characters aggro-dodging and it being terrifying but fun back in early game; now it's impossible to even /get there/ on a level 37 character solo. There's no reason for monsters that high level to be in the game.

This is, right now, the only active change made by the dev team that makes me want to throw my controller out of a window. I really can't figure out any kind of rational explanation for this, other than that they don't actually want you to be able to solo the Path of the Twelve quests? Or be able to do them at all without playing some kind of sick, twisted death hopscotch to even make it to the zone line. I don't get it. :(

To cause you great grief

Protip: follow the northern-most path to get there. Very few aggro mobs above 55 that way. More running, but much safer.

You mean running in from Coerthas? That's... the least obvious way to roll in, and does involve lots of running, but that's why the Twelve granted us chocobos, I guess. Thanks for the tip, I'll try that!

No, I mean running in from The Black Shroud, but take the northern fork when you get to the watery stream area, instead of taking the more direct (and dangerous) southern fork.

Ahh. I've tried that, I still got rolled by efts and roselings. :(

Its a shame that they have all these areas covered with mobs that level 50 players cannot solo. So many areas of the game that could be used but are instead wasted with high level mobs roaming around.

In patch 1.20, we plan on adjusting the placement of high level aggro monsters close to the Black Shroud when traveling to Mor Dhona by way of Camp Crimson Bark.

While we’re not planning on removing all aggro monsters, we do plan on making it possible to avoid engaging these monsters.

If possible, can you look into mob placement for the R36 BTN quest? Back when I did it getting to the quest was suicide even on a level 50 class.

About time it was changed, I went the (very) long way through Coerthas before I realised there was a safe route in Black Shroud.

Ah, I did this. It was actually quite fun, holding my breath all the way lol. I don't think I would have made it without my chocobo though. Key was to keep all my buffs on and keep moving.

Small start but this is just a band-aid on a much larger problem. As usual, when SE sees something that requires legitimate balancing they grossly overcompensate. This is a problem in FFXI and has carried over to FFXIV. When FFXIV first launched there every few high level mobs anywhere. SE recognized this as a deficiency and rightly so. But in correcting this problem they placed packs of high level agro mobs <65-95> at almost every choke point in the game. This problem needs a comprehensive review and proper corrections made where neccessary

If you run the northern path nothing is past 50 really, if you get hit by those mobs you just aren't watching out, FFXI wasn't about running into any area and crossing it safely, this concept was more or less brought into XIV, you watch for mobs, and you take your time in aggro heavy zones, we've all done, most of the people on these forums have passed the exact quest you're talking about without chocobos, little to no reason to bitch.

There are no aggro mobs on the way to this area. Look at the map again and you'll see the route. :P

As it happens I just took a friend to mor dhona yesterday to do this quest since they had never been there before. I could have teleported us there and get it done quick, but decided to go the long way to give them a feel of what getting to mor dhona was like back in the day, and also pick up some aetheryte gates in the process.

We chocobo'd all the way from uldah, going north through camp bluefog, then took a little detour to pick up the bluefog aetheryte gates that are heavily surrounded by level 70-80 drakes and such.

We entered mor dhona from the bottom and circled it to get to the quest spot, this was the easiest part of the journey, only a few lv~50 eyes that can be easily outrun

After the quest, we continued to circle mor dhona up to the last aetherial gate, surrounded by lv90 Peistes, Ogres and bombs

There was a very real sense of danger in doing all this, fortunately we managed to avoid all aggro, but this is precisely what made an -otherwise boring- journey exciting and fun!

Ahhh Mor Dhona, I remember back in the day (i know game is only 1 yr old but meh) when i was a lil lvl 20 LNC I decided to run to Mor Dhona (partly cos I needed to get to bluefog for a local, now that was scary I was screaming to bluefog the screaming through Mor Dhona and somehow I managed to get to courthas, dont ask me how, then a raptor oneshotted me so i gave up then lol.

Only a couple of deaths in Mor Dhona hitting every aether on the way was a fun day though, and this was before the days of chocobos.

50 :P But if eyes are a problem for you, you can just take your time, and wait for the right moment to run behind them, they only aggro by sight.

I did this quest with two friends, and while we died a few times, it was one of the most interesting quests and for sure a lot of fun:)
After we got the crystals we took a tour through Mor Dhona, around the lake to get more camps and to see the dragon from different angles.
It was very dangerous, and because of that, very exiting :D

In my opinion, it would be sad if the dev team replaced the monsters in a way that would make a safe route.

No one is asking that the dev team make a safe route. Instead make a route that is more inline around the lowest level for a quest that is required to go into the zone. As it sits now its next to impossible to get past the R34 quest unless you form a light party for exp.

had this problem few weeks ago but got past it after a very long time , good to see some changes will be for it , it was really hard at a certain point.

I did this quest just yesterday. Couldn't get there from black shroud, but find it quite easy going in and reaching the ??? coming from northern tanalan.

The concern is still valid. Before chocobos, we could solo monsters 10 ranks higher than us. The path was less dangerous then. 10 level difference now is a lot more severe.

But I digress. Rukkirii has indicated it's being looked into.

this is the way crimson bark to zone, I take no credit for the outlined map I just stumbled upon it.
Vultures and hogs wont hit you if you keep moving, and try to stay as far from efts as you can.

Yeah that's the one i took and survived, the efts have a pretty strange aggro behavior.
Efts are really the only ones who will hit you and if they do you're dead cause it sends you flying off chocobo.

I remember runing to Mor Dhona once! I got to camp and hit the Aetheryte in one piece. (/cheers) I was lv.15! XD (i think)

I took the path from the Black Shroud(from camp Emerald Moss )>>> Courthas then went south. I landed in camp glory first. I continued south and hit all the gate I could before zoning @ the South part of the map (if I can remember). There were mob that scared the pants off me though but I pressed on(solo ; ; ) and arrived @ camp Revenant's Toll. "Wheeeee!" ;)

I went that route recently, you can pass if you are lucky, but there is one of those aggressive does that camps the exit to mor dhona lol.
