So Yoshida said in a recent interview that the dev team will be implementing classical FF weapons (for example, Excalibur) and in order to have one, you will have to apply. And the application process will involve you having your old weapon reskinned with the model of a legendary weapon.
Doesnt that seem a bit too artificial and contrived?
I dont mean to make this thread into an immersion debate, but it's kind of ironic that the reason they are implementing these weapons is to instill a sense of FF-ness (in other words they are trying to aid in the immersiveness of the FF game) but at the same time it detracts from the sensibility of the world because the concept doesnt even begin to make any kind of sense.

Call me old fashioned but I think they should just stick to letting us craft stuff and slot materia into it.
The way SE intend to add this apply-for-weapon feature just seems like they're making these so-called legendary weapons into an official .dat mod. Sounds a bit lame to me.
I see where they are coming from with this feature (they want to keep these good weapons from becoming outdated), but still. . .

The way I understood it they had specific requirements to be considered an Excalibur in his explanation. Like you couldnt just up and turn a spatha into an excalibur. He said it cannot be just any sword, but a higher tier sword with an extensive stat requirement. I think the system sounds very interesting, and if the requirements are higher it will always keep it in the hands of very few which will add to the rarity of the item.

I like Yoshi's idea too, but I still would like some skill level involved. The way I understood it, just seemed like it would be absolute complete luck + gil sink. Which is fine, because XI's had a huge gil sink, but you still had to kill shit for it as well.

the biggest issue is people will be mad because they never truely own excalibur. but ehh, this was an idea for the legendary items of teh FF franchise like the genji glove or atma weapon, it makes sense that you can only have it when you reach the pinnacle, and continually have to reach the pinnacle to have access to it. -

It's basically akin to if you had to register and upgrade your relic/mythic for it to continue being a relic. Im speculating but i'm sure it will gain special stats or abilities with the title.Quote:

With how he's talking about Seasons, I'm picturing some kind of competition between Free Companies for claim of these weapons. Requirements doesn't necessarily mean just the weapon's requirements. Could also be the cumulative points a Free Company has acquired. Like a Ladder score. Seasons in other PvP games generally involve such things.
Also, "applying" doesn't necessarily mean talking to an NPC and hoping you get it. You might also apply by performing some sort of seasonal acheivement. Like say, "First to Kill Garlean Leader", or "Defeated Bahamut in Season 2".
So acquiring a legendary item would mean several things: Your Free Company is doing exceptionally well, you have a piece of equipment that's been crafted to near perfection already, and you've accomplished a huge feat in order to apply.
I understand that Lore takes somewhat of a backseat here, but the game is a game, and an online one at that. I'll take gameplay over Lore, plz k thx. -

Did I understand this wrong, I thought Yoshida said that you at some point can obtain a "legendary" weapon, and that when the game develops you could upgrade it into a more powerful version (so that the best/legendary weapons in the FF saga don't become lolworthy in x years into the game, say for instance when the cap raises and you have many new weapons). I understood this as a comparison to the Relic weapons in FFXI in some degree.
Now here you are saying that basically any "high tier" weapon can be upgraded into a relic? Does that mean that every different "high tier" weapon will have different stats as the same relic? I hope not, because this was one of the things in FFXIII that I didn't like.

They should just go the FF XI route on the relic weapons, make them hard to get, if they so happen to raise the lvl cap just they should just make quest to make them stronger.

I like that idea. I guess the reasoning behind it is that by making it an ultimate weapon so early on in XIV's life, it would be outclassed by countless other weapons, thus losing its charm.

When you think about it, the weapons or armor transforming into a legendary items does make sense when you put materia into the equation. For the most part it'll most likley be gear that has been augmented into materia that will allow one to get said legendary weapons. Materia is the product of ones attatchment to an items they built up and then converted into another form so the lore idea that the materia's essence in the gear allows it to transform into a legendary items is very plausible.
Only thing that bothers me about this idea is will it be heavily luck based, I'd hate to think that Legendary weapons turn into a whoever has the most gil/luck item. When say you need 3 IV STR to get a Bravura Great Axe. I hope some skill can be put into this system it would really be a pity if it came down to people with legendaries either buy gil or have a lot of gil lol.
But ya, it would be cool if he can dive into that in the upcoming live interview coming up I would like to see that concept in more detail cause it defintely does have promise. -
