How can we improve the way medals are handled if someone DCs or leaves?

So, I'm sure everyone has encountered the random DC or raging team member who outright leaves once in a while. It's super frustrating when they drop out (for whatever reason) because their coins drop on the floor and can be easily picked up by the other team (they don't transfer to your other teammates).

Tonight, I encountered a situation that really made me feel bad for the other team. I've seen people DC all night, but nothing was as heart-wrenching as this moment.

So I was in 4v4 ranked. Our team wasn't doing well. There were 30-ish seconds left and we were behind in medals, but, since I thought we would lose anyway, I ran to mid thinking I would just blow my LB on someone. There was no reason not to, anyway. The opposition was standing in a group in mid, just waiting for us (by this point, there was 15-ish seconds left). Then I watched someone DC or leave right in front of me, and their coins dropped on the floor. In my last game, the one before that one, something similar happened to my teammate (watched him DC and we lost his coins at the end), so I wasn't exactly feeling bad about running in and grabbing those coins. After grabbing them, I quickly ran behind a wall and sprinted away before anyone could react. It was all very fast. By that point, there was 5-ish seconds left and the match ended with my team as the winners... they couldn't kill me fast enough.

Is that fair? Nope! Not at all. If people were kinder about DCs when they happen, I wouldn't have been such a jerk about it... but, y'know how it is in competitive PvP. :P All's fair in love and war.

Anyway, I was thinking maybe we could brainstorm a better way for medal drops to be handled if someone leaves or DCs during a match? It's really not fair to your own team if something unexpected like that happens, but I understand that they don't want people abusing the ability to DC or leave. Perhaps we could change it so those medals that were dropped can only be picked up by the team of the person who DCed? Sure, your team would now have higher medal stacks (and those wouldn't be adjusted), but it wouldn't be an instawin for the opposition in a situation like the one I described above.

This definitely needs to be addressed... Just had a match, everyone ran in, Monk disconnected. No DPS, our healer went down, Summoner followed. Match over almost instantly. Yay minus rating, because of a f*cking disconnect?!

They either need to prevent those medals from being picked up at all/for a duration, or null the matches results, because any match with a disconnect is just woefully unfair... If you're on the receiving end of one, it is just plan shitty, if you get free medals out of one? Easy +rating, but nobody should feel good about winning a match like that...

I don't even think I'd want the medals to just not be counted, the team with a disconnect/leave is at a huge disadvantage just by virtue of that fact... The results simply should not count... Let the match play on, if a disconnect happens that should be an automatic draw. It isn't fair to punish three people for the bad connection/attitude of one player, and we shouldn't reward four for that either. That just skews rating results...

While I agree with you in principle, I don't trust people not to abuse that system.

Let's say you enter a game and your team is getting completely destroyed... so someone on your team decides to DC to negate the results of the game. Even worse, what if you enter a game and realize that you have a notoriously bad player on your team and it's unlikely you'll win anyway... Oh, just DC to negate the results.

Basically, I don't trust everyone to play fair, so allowing for an automatic draw would just create more frustration for PvPers and more work for GMs (who would now have to review even more situations of abuse and make judgment calls based on that).

I really can't think of anything besides the medals dropping for your own team to pick up. Either way, I think it shouldn't be possible for the opposition to pick up the medals right away... just seems unfair.

Perhaps have a draw for all who kept playing, while the individual/s who disconnects gets the regular -rating. I mean... Sure it sucks if you have an honest disconnect, but... What are the chances your team was going to walk out with a win a man down anyway? Chances are, if you disconnect you're getting -rating anyway, at least that way nobody else has to suffer (or artificially advance) because of your shoddy internet.

I guess that's still open to abuse, since you'd be able to save your team a reduction and prevent your opponents from advancing, but would people really do that if their rating is going to tank as a result? I feel like that would be the sort of behavior that's easily recognizable and simple ban if truly abused...

I wouldn't want to give the opposing team nothing because my team had a DC.
If anything, give them a lesser +rating when they win and the losers a lessened -rating (say 25% less for each player DCd at the end), but if the lower team pulls through and wins they should be given a boost to their rating.

I've been on the other side of the situation where the opposing team had a DC. The win felt empty. :\

This really does need more attention.

I think reducing the amount gained/lost is a decent solution, but it kind of negates when it happens at the very, very end. I could still see a possibility for abuse if a team is getting badly beat, though. :(

No medals should drop. party medal points remain the same and no stacks transfer from the ( Gone member ) to any of the party members. i guess. cuz they lost a member and the enemy team have the upper hand to beat them anyway... so no medal drop is safer for the party that lost a member.

Some people register with 2 accounts, 1 of them is put on my team and AFK in the base, the other account is playing on oposite team... yeah... very fair...

So... SE, Community Reps, any plans for this? Just lost once more because of a stupid disconnect... Losing rating because you have no healer? Seems legit...

Someone DCing is, sadly, more common than one might think. For example, I was in a qualifier the other night... Won my first two games without issue. I only needed one more win out of the next possible three games to get bumped up. The third game, my tank DCed right at the start and we ultimately lost. Although our DPS were having no trouble killing people (and our healer was having no trouble keeping us alive), we simply couldn't hold enough medals and stay alive to secure a win. We were eventually wiped out after a few minutes. So, that was a loss. The fourth game, we had a fair and clear loss where both teams seemed to be evenly matched and the other team just outplayed us. The fifth and final game, our healer DCed shortly into the match (right when we all clashed in the middle) and we (obviously) lost as a result. Although I did eventually meet my qualifier again and finally received my promotion, that was really frustrating to say the least.

It's hard enough that you really don't stand much of a chance if your teammate DCs, but it's even worse when the game literally stacks the mechanics against you. (Such as -- the medals of your DCed teammate dropping on the ground and they can only be picked up by the opposing team, or your team's inability to hold medals because of how stacks work and you need to share medals between three people instead of four.)

Ugh! I felt dirty on that. I was in a 4v4 Solo match when it was Pre-season and the other team's healer rage quite and we just sat there with a lot of time to spare but we knew we were going to win cause we only needed one more kill and boom coins. We just sat there it was so mean :( Like I mean...if they were going to lose at least let them lose with a full team not with someone who got pissy and quit out, the healer especially >.> I didn't like it and wish I could have given up that win to make up for them not having their healer anymore.

Though I also lost one time because my dog thought the best PVP strategy was to pull the plug on my internet modem and cut me out in the middle of healing a run o...o

The problem with that is someone with 10 stacks could just DC and come back near the end. Sadly, there's no magical solution to the problem. Even dropping only a part of it could be problematic in the case you know it won't be enough for the other team to catch up.

If it's too lenient, it will get abused.

Tweaking the rating gain/loss for the other players in the match seems like the fairest solution to me. Thankfully, I've only had one teammate DC so far (though it was during qualifiers...), so it hasn't been a major issue.

Had just lost a match because our tank dropped 7 stacks worth of medals in the last 20 seconds. It was pretty terrible. :(

I think that at the very least, medals from a DC should only be able to be picked up by his team and not his opponents. That way the score would remain the same, but you'd still have to deal with being shorthanded AND an extra number of stacks on someone, so it would be much harder to abuse.

I'm not so sure this works. You could abuse this by telling either melee or healer (preferably melee) to force dc since those are the two classes that are always targeted for initial burst. Have the tank take their coins leaving tank at 4 stacks and then the melee will have no medals to take away. This forces the other team to attack either the healer with all cooldowns available from the start, or the ranged dps who already has defense buff anyway, meanwhile the melee is free to cause as much mayhem as they want since killing them would be a waste of cooldowns.

I'll say it again;

Make matches with disconnects either a draw, or reduced rating reward/reduction, and have the person who disconnected gain a greater reduction in rating than usual.

Sure, that's harsh if you have a real disconnect, but it completely removes any potential for abuse... If a disconnect means an automatic -50 for you, you're never going to purposefully disconnect... Heck, you can handle what you do with the players left fighting in any number of ways, I don't really care that much, but the important thing is preventing abuse by coming down hard on whoever disconnects...

I really regret tallying matches I've lost (and won) with disconnects... All that -rating is fucking depressing...

I don't know about you, but when I disconnect I usually get the "you are already logged in" error for a couple minutes before I can even get back in. I'm not sure how it would be beneficial to go 3v4 for that long even if it would let you control who has some medals. That's bound to put a lot more pressure on the outnumbered healer. They could always mark the medals as "temporary" and transfer them back automatically to the guy who DCed when he comes back, though I have some doubts that would be technically feasible.

It could drop half medals for enemy team and half medals for your team... This would still punish your team for the disconnection but would not ruin the match...

It really really sucks when you or someone on your team dc's but I dont feel it happens frequently enough that they have to do something that could potentially be exploited later on. I mean if they can find an unexploitable way then by all means but I have personally only been victim to dc losses maybe like 3 times in over 200 matches.

It doesn't happen all that often (hopefully!), but we are looking for a better way to handle it when it does happen. We just don't want the new solution to be open to abuse. The current method punishes the team with the DC pretty hard, so no one would want to DC on purpose (although I have seen people rage quit out of games out of spite). But... if the method for handling medal drops when someone DCs is too lenient, then people might find a way to use this to their benefit. So we are just trying to find a better middle ground.

Today I got DC twice on a same match !!! And its not my internet connection 100% sure... Right now as I write this reply my team must be raging inside the match !!!

This madness has to stop, servers are really strange nowadays... =(

Something needs to be done about this, I lost 6 matches (or 150 points) due to people disconnecting on my team in the last two days. I have only won one match due to a dc on the other team, leaving me with a -125 point loss from disconnects alone.

I am sad.

Happened about 3 more times since my last post. Bring that to a -175 point loss from disconnects on my team alone.
