Temporary item bank for rare items

So I just got out of a Battle at the Big Keep where I had a Bartz card hit the floor because my inventory was full. I didn't set out to get the card, it was a roulette, so I was there for the xp, and given how rare it is, I wasn't expecting any loot (before anyone says trololol make sure you have space next time).

Given that I may never see another Bartz card, can we please have a temporary item storage that lasts until the end of the instance for these kinds of things (cards, primal drops, sheet music) so that they don't immediately hit the floor if our inventories are full. Also, if everyone leaves a dungeon/trial except you and you have a full inventory, the chests contents also immediately hit the floor, this feature will also alleviate that.

Edit: Please keep the discussion on the feature, not my problem, I've gotten over the fact that the card hit the floor, and I know it's my own fault, but that does not change the validity of the feature that I am requesting.

Here is an idea how about making sure you have a couple spots open just in case for stuff like this? It is not rocket science.

I support this idea. Space isn't necessarily an issue for me - but it would be nice to have an option to either drop another item in your inventory to replace drops that come to you or have a "temporary" holding spot until you leave the instance or something.

I've seen similar executions in other games before and I feel like we're always complaining about space here. Seems like a "need to have" rather than a "would like to have" function? My only thought though is that the Triple Triad cards are not classified as "rare" items, are they? I'd imagine that even if they did create a rule it would have to involve some sort of restrictions like: "Blue Items Only" or something? How would items "qualify" for this sort of functionality?

Edit: I don't "get" the passive aggressive lack of support on some of these enhancement requests. Are there valid reasons for not supporting improving someone else's experience even if it's not your own?

Beat people to it or not, it's really nobody else's fault but your own for having your inventory completely full. Just make sure you've got at least one space next time, problem solved

Edit: I craft too - but know to never have my inventory completely full.

I think it's more because they have limited development time into what features can be added and this is something that we as the players already have a way to avoid. I know I'd personally rather they spend their time adding new features.

Requests are not magically implemented and take developers time and resources. I'd personally rather them work on improving character inventory altogether, which they've already said will be difficult because of "server limitations." Working on a temporary inventory seems like a waste of their time when the solution is already there.

We need more space to begin with - not just a bank that lasts to the end of our dungeon run.

While that's very considerate of people to consider the work-load implications; we do pay to play... There's a huge community here and of course everyone is going to have their own priorities that don't align with the next person's. It just seems to me that people like to hear their own negativity and thus leave these useless replies.

Thinking more about a potential enhancement - players already have the Key Items inventory slots in their inventory. Does anyone actually use this? These inventory slots that are already built-in should be re-purposed... they are such a waste in their current state. Admittedly, I haven't done ALL of the content in the game - but currently the only item in my Key Items inventory bag is the Aether Compass, which I don't think has any use once you've found all of the Aether Flows or air-streams or whatever they are called....

I use it on occasion, but tbh I feel like it could be resized. The amount of items I have had in that tab at any given time has never exceeded three rows. Yet we have so many rows for it. Perhaps this space could be reduced and given towards more inventory slots.

I do agree with you that we pay to play and that should be enough for them to add more slots--we can pay for extra retainers..yet they complain on data stress? So we are paying for the extra data to be given for retainer slots..maybe they can implement a payment for extra bag space. Plenty of games have done this before. Sure I think it's dumb to have to pay to increase my bag but if they are that hurting from data strain..I guess I could live with it.

I definitely don't want to take away from what the OP's topic was with the sidebar - I just disagree that there was any constructive feedback in the first two replies.

The request is a "quality of life" request; so it shouldn't take away from anyone's experience. At the very least it could start a conversation - your last reply is at least useful because even me who has played since Beta didn't know I could move items into that Key Item tab. Learn something new every day...

I don't think you can move them, but the things I mentioned are automatically stored in the Key Items tab, instead of taking up regular inventory slots.

Ahh yeah... Just went back to test that...

But then, I think it goes back to my point for the OP: I've never seen this section of my inventory full. Never. At the very least 1 box or 1 line could be re-purposed as a temp holding space. Items that drop there when your inventory is full can have a 5 minute timer once you exit an instance for example until they disappear. As I said - I've never really experienced inventory issues since I habitually purge everything in my bag - but I think that it would be a terrible experience if I missed out on a valuable drop because I didn't realize the junk in my bag had filled my open spots through-out an instance run. (i.e. Running AV as a WHM Leveling DF and just getting all of those auto mat/low-level pot drops from chests that I have no use for, etc...)

I just think it could very easily happen that you lose track of your inventory space if things are already tight and you head into an instance for a run... Things hop in there on their own whether you want them or not in most cases.

FFXI had this, not just for rare items, but for any drops if your inventory was full.

You can't move things into the Key Items tab. I just wish they'd make more items into Key Items to utilize that space more.

Well, WoW had a nice solution for it. Whenever an item dropped for you in a dungeon, but you couldn't pick it up (due to a full inventory), the item would be sent to your mailbox instead.

I can fully understand the frustration of having stuff hit the floor because of a full inventory. I had that the other day when I was doing the Kobold Beastmen quests. I needed to get the Alchemist Fate drop for one of my quests, but even though I made room for the fate reward, it still hit the floor, due to monster loot filling up the spare slots. Luckily the fate respawns quickly, unlike the Kafra (the Boar in East Shroud).

Just give us WoW's Twisted Nether feature.

^This specific situation has driven me nuts on more than one occasion. Trying to get my Kobold quest FATE drop, and iron ore and all manners of other things continually dropping into my inventory, taking up space. If I don't get them all destroyed before the FATE ends, I lose the item and have to camp it again. Why aren't these FATE drops key items?

I have four retainers that are all filled to the brim with crafting materials, materia, leveling gear, old relic weapons, and glamour items. Full armoury chest. Plus my regular inventory never has more than 5-6 free spaces. Good thing this game doesn't have an encumbrance debuff.

Yes, the general issue of alleviating full inventory space needs to be addressed. But they've said that may take a while. In the meantime, if there's a way to allocate some temporary storage that wouldn't significantly detract from development, many of us would be glad to hear it.

That's a nice idea. Also, like others have said, can't we consider reallocating a line or two of key item storage to temporary overflow storage for drops? I usually have 3-4 lines full (Crystal Tower quest items, relic weapon items, hunt marks, and other things). Three whole inventory boxes seems like a waste, though.

I'd rather it be re-purposed as extra inventory space in general, not a temporary one.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, on the subject of negative feedback, I appreciated constructive feedback, I'm very open to reasons why this feature is a bad idea (which it isn't). What I don't appreciate is destructive feedback and shutdowns. Summing it up nicely:

Back on topic; As has been mentioned, XI has this, WoW has this, almost every other MMO I have played has this, it's something that would help players when they aren't expecting it to, and give them a lifeline, especially with the amount of junk that drops into the inventory when you don't want it to.

While I appreciate the sentiment, in my opinion, this feature is more important than something like idlecam/groupcam or visual alerts. These features are very niche, but might be very useful to a few, and we got them, why is this any different and any less valid of developer time?

I support this 100%, it would be a nice quality of life addition and it's something a lot of other games have. I can't see any disadvantage in doing this at all.

People aren't trying to attack you, it's just the problem you're proposing a solution to can already be solved by simply making sure your inventory isn't full.

There are other problems in the game, however minor, that don't have any solution and haven't been addressed yet. Unable to queue with your chocobo summoned is an example.

As I said, I'm not opposed to this because I think it's a bad idea, but because if developers are going to spend time creating a temporary inventory, I'd rather they use that time to increase our storage space and not just for a temporary bank most people won't even need.

Here's my input:

A) I'm a crafter too but always keep at least 10 spaces free before any duty, killing things or map.

B) I support the idea that you should be able to be warned that something (anything, rare or not) has dropped after a duty & be given the opportunity to destroy something in your inventory in order to accept the drop. That way you still get punished for not keeping free space but have the chance for some recompense.

Until such time as that is in place then, I'm sorry to say, it's your own fault.

It wasn't a complaint, it was an observation of the destructive feedback. This topic isn't about my problem, that happened, it's my own fault, I got over it. What I would really like to know is: can we have a feature like this so that the problem doesn't happen to others?

The fact that this is in a lot of other MMOs (XI and WoW are named in the thread), and the fact that people in the thread have said this would be helpful goes against this. The idea is to allow people to be safe in the knowledge that their RNG drops won't hit the floor, and mean that players don't need to micromanage in order to not lose rare items, and as such, would benefit ALL players indirectly, not just a few.

I know what you are suggesting and why it would help some. However, you are still ignoring the point I've been making since my first or second post. This suggestion is very far down on my (and many other peoples) lists of requests since there are far more urgent things that need to be taken care of including inventory space in general.

As I said multiple times, it's not a bad idea, but it's an idea I'd rather be pushed back until SE fix the more important things in the game. The same developers working on a temporary inventory could be increasing the one we already have.

Also, it doesn't benefit ALL players indirectly, unless every single player is micromanaging their inventory every time they enter a dungeon. I would never need this feature because I don't carry around what I don't need.

I'm not against the idea. I just want inventory space fixing before they add a temporary one that will only be used if your entire inventory is full.

I support the idea of an item overflow. There are other MMO's that do this (Skyforge and Firefall are the main ones) where if your inventory is full the items go in to a special overflow that you can't access until you've made room. Those games also add a movement speed penalty if you have too much stuff, I'm not exactly for that aspect of it though.
