Quantity vs Quality Updates

I know that many still feel like they don't have a lot to do in the game, and they want more content. But do we? Or do we really want fleshed out quality content that would keep us coming back to it? I've seen many posts in live letters where SE's reasoning for not doing something is that it would be too much work, or too much time to make it happen. But when we get something, even though its usually pretty nice, it quickly becomes old to us.

As simple as bringing butts back to designing entirely different races. SE stated that it would be too much work to redo the armors to accommodate our rears or to make a race that used a different body style than what we had. Yes...we got the Au Ra...but what happened ended up disappointing those who though we were really getting something different. The females are basically miqo with scales and horns and the men seem too much like the elezen reworked in the same way.

Progression is being tied somewhat to redoing old content such as fates or rerunning old dungeons. We find ourselves doing the same tome grind over and over again. I was really disappointed at one point when the MSQ required guildhests to progress.

I am very happy with the game, but I feel like it could really benefit from having the team sit down and rework some of the things that just aren't really working the way that it could. I feel like if what we got was put together a little better we would enjoy it more, and we wouldn't have to worry about going back and doing fates and dungeons with a carrot dangled in front of our faces. We should be going back to them because they are fun. It's working for us now, but how far down the road can FFXIV go by repainting things we have with a new color or giving it a new name. I would personally be fine if we had to go without certain updates for the sake of really making the content stand out and make us fall more in love with it.

And if those don't make my point, how about those of you wanting better graphics updates. If SE won't rework the models and graphics for butts and races, do you still think they would rework the graphics for the sake of reworking the graphics? Because I don't.

Still happy with the game, but I just feel like it could be more with a little bit more love from the devs.

Do you want more updates, more content faster? Or slower updates with better quality content?

i just want that they get rid of "catch up content". we don't need content to catch up the top raiders (or in other words: fed up with high ilvl gear for almost no effort), we need content for the mid-tier playerbase.

Better quality definitely. While FFXIV is the fastest updating MMO I've played, it's also the one where the contest loses its novelty in the shortest amount of time. As someone that's been playing since 2.1-2.2, the new patch cycles lately is only giving me the novelty of "new content" for 2 weeks at the most (or 3 days as far as 3.1 was concerned) before it devolves to grinding and daily tasks (which itself is very static and non-dynamic). The two dungeons are incredibly monotonous, and they'll more-than overstay its welcome by the time it even goes into the lvl 60 roulette next patch).

It also doesn't help that the foundation of the expansion can be the cause of the very lackluster updates; the raiding scene has taken a big hit that I'm doubtful it'll even recover from until we get cross-server matching/linkshell, crafting/gathering is in an even downer slump than ever because of favors and what crafters can actually make, and they can't really add anything interesting to FC crafting the way it is right now.

While I agree, I don't see that much changing. There are just too many players that don't want to do anything that takes effort. When coil normal was the lowest raid difficulty, people spent months to clear and months to farm. Now with Alex normal being the lowest difficulty it takes 2 hours to clear and 5 weeks to farm the whole set. So it's really not that suprising to me that people are getting bored faster than they were before. Because of community feedback this game will prob never have any content that takes longer than a couple hours to clear. The best you can hope for is some kinda hard "mode" with crap rewards that hardly anyone does (savage, minimum ilvl, ect) Every bit of "endgame" will be some kind of watered down version that can be cleared in minimal time with minimal skill. While i love the game, I'm not sure if I'll be buying the next expansion because the endgame is just dull imo.

This game seems to have emphasized glamour as the true end game in 3.0 compared to 2.0. The only point to doing savage outside of bragging rights is for dyeable gear and bis is almost non existent as no content outside of savage requires it. I've stopped raiding due to work hours and have been forced into the mid-core group and I gotta say the biggest flaw is that anything in the category is rng gated. Bird farming, relics, and pvp to name a few. The problem is the current story is so short and I play games for the story first and content later. They also need to stop with making "new" content that makes you go into old dungeons. If they are going to do this route make it interesting. For example, find a hidden mob that spawns randomly in the dungeon. They also need to un-sync CT so I can run it 8 man.

Agreed 100%, I feel like the middle ground could be stronger instead of being a sinkhole between too easy and difficult.

I do agree that a lot of development time/cost is spent on content that gets old fast, with the main offender being dungeons. To optimise cost efficiency they are made extremely linear, simple and repetitive. Participation in this kind of content is very high, but not necessarily for fun reasons. Many people do them reluctantly each day because we are encouraged by high rewards; they are easy to complete and are the fastest source of tomestones when entering via roulette.

My preference would be a reduction in the amount of instanced content, replaced by more frequent additions of fields zones like say Coerthas Eastern Highlands for example. Currently we don't get any field zones for 2 years, then get several at once in an expansion. So my idea would be to spread those across the patch series, giving more regular opportunities to go questing in new lands. In exchange the expansions would be more heavily focused on the introduction of new jobs, raids, pvp and new types of content.

As a MCH/BRD, I really disagree with this being the case, considering that our i160/180 crafted is the same model as a previous piece that was already available to BRD (which was also a shared model of the caster/healer)...while caster/healer, tank/drg got entirely new models and mnk/nin got the kirmu coat. ...then kirimu coat was made into a level 1 crafted glamour thats incredibly cheap to make.

This is an interesting issue. On one hand they need to and I suspect want to make content that players are happy redoing. On the other hand they want to release content regularly enough to keep players interested. This is a sub based game so keeping people subbed is important. If they go 6 months between patches, they need to be releasing content that will keep people playing for 6 months.

But what content is actually going to do that and can it be made within FF14's system? I think that is the big question. They have tried some new things such as the Diadem, which haven't really worked so clearly they are looking. What do they release that will keep people consistently playing? Even if people only sub for a month ever 3 months SE will still be better off than if people only sub for a month every 6 months.

In sure people will have arguments on what would keep them personally playing but the issue here is wether that will appeal enough to large groups. The reason companies make linear dungeons is because a lot of people just want something they can run through quickly. They don't want to take time to wonder down side paths and such. Hell, I have people in my FC who are very happy with the current model.

If someone had an answer to this question I think every game designer in the industry would want to know.

What we need is a middle ground. The problem with content is that it has to reward you with something or else no one will work for it. Gear is the main reason why people do anything now, but it is pointless if no gear is provided. Glamour rewards are also pointless since that is what gear turns into anyways.

We need more:


Side quests: Side quest stories are a great way to enjoy the game and take a break from all the dungeon grinds and raiding for gear. Final Fantasy excels in story and should take advantage of their strengths to make that a huge things.

Rework Diadem: Diadem was a great idea on paper, but fell through because SE did not account for players completing things for reward and ignoring the feel of exploring.Diadem also failed to be interesting to players since all it was made of was trees and rocks. Nothing in Diadem was really worth exploring. As soon as SE fixed the drop rate, Diadem became a ghost town. I Believe that it needs to be re-evaluated and suggestions from the player base should be heard in what they can do to give that hunk or rock life again.

Grand Companies: We know they are coming soon, but they need to get here faster and have amazing story and reward.

Hunts: Hunts have no rewards besides tomes and has not been updated since Heavenward first arrived. It needs new items such as, housing, music, pets, mounts, glamour, and character updates. We also need stronger monsters besides S ranks to fulfil our thrill for the hunt. Bosses that would require the presence of the entire server and even so possibly more.

Crafting: It is just as bad as grinding tomes. There needs to be a story in place to help crafters at least feel the are progressing in story rather than mindlessly getting someone scripts to update their gear.

The problem there is it brings in the third factor: Development Resources. It takes time, money and people to make content. If they are going to produce more or higher quality work in the same amount of time there is going to need to be more resources to full that content. Story driven content in particular takes a fair amount of time to make. In a time factor side quests don't consume much time to play but take quite a bit to create.

That said its possible they could come up with new ways to tell story which require a higher time investment. Perhaps they could have tied the crafting disciplines in with the story of Idylshire's development and growth.

How about simply... more foresight? Some inkling of a plan where small, individually interesting steps move us towards a final goal, rather than merely hanging on via hand-holds identical to the last whole cliff's worth?

Imo were savage stands now it kinda feels like wasted resources sometimes. it might just be an impression but it feels like even less ppl are doing it this round. and just going from my experience, it's not even much fun to begin with.
One of the reasons is obviously the normal mode. you know the story; you know the bosses already even if they do different (sometimes even ridiculous) things in savage. Then you have the alexander graphical design which is most of the time super boring. Even the first 5 turns of coil had more visual variety than all 8 floors of alex together.

How to fix that? well maybe not waste resources on stuff like diadem. it could have been a good thing but the way it was implemented it was just bad. and SE could have known this, since they should know their player base by now.

Maybe make it just one mode again for the raid. if not many play savage, it isn't really needed, rather make one mode that everyone can beat with a bit of effort.
why not a 2nd raid during the odd patches, with a higher difficulty than the even one.
make raids actually one zone, cut out one boss (three should be enough), but add some random mechanics from boss to boss (turn 3 style?).
the 24-man raid shall remain aswell though.

I like this game a lot and I actually want to play it more not less. but recently I'm not really looking forward to the raid days of my static, cause wether we beat savage or not, if feels like a chore with no real rewards. (with aczually having fun being the biggest possible reward)

As one who grew up with games that were centered on this kind of stuff, it'd be kinda nice for designers to go all-in on quality over quantity for once. Heck, I've played idle games that were more creative than that. :rolleyes:

Not to mention having constant updates sounds to me like desperation, having to keep players interested for fear of them packing up and leaving for another game, which just makes them look bad. Might as well do it good the 1st time.

I personally would like to see more middle-ground content too. Like, fixing dungeons to actually require a bit of thought, and not as just a means to an end for tomes. Like idk have a dungeon drop a random coin after every run, with there being 8 different coins, and if you get into a run where between 4 of you, you have all 8 coins, it unlocks a secret boss that gives bonus tomes or a special glamour piece but is especially challenging, and if you fail it, you have to wait until another group has all the coins between them again. (The coins, of course, being kept in the Key Items tab so they don't take up actual space.)

Perhaps adventure-style content, where you have 90 minutes to get from point A to point B, and have challenges and camps in between. So maybe get plopped onto an island in the Sea of Clouds, and you have to recover a downed airship. You fight some mobs that respawn, and you reach an arch that you can't pass until 10 minutes have passed. In the meantime you can farm the mobs, or do some gathering. After you pass the arch you're in a natural arena and have to survive 5 minutes of mobs rushing you, and then you reach the second camp, and you progress to the next obstacle. Obstacles would be randomly generated from a specified pool so no adventure is ever the exact same twice. And make a moderately challenging set-up available for DF, and a challenging set-up available for premade parties.

I would also like to see an alternate take on raids- I used to play DDO and in that game, raids were entire storylines that you could play through once a week, iirc. So instead of getting one big boss rush we get a storyline that involves us going into an 8-person dungeon, and then a 16-person dungeon, and finally it culminates into a massive 24-person boss battle.

Obviously I'm no game designer but I'd just like to see more content with a narrative, something with a goal other than just "Oh I have to run this dungeon to get tomes and my new gloves."

I definitely agree that we need more mid-core content. For people who aren't interested in raiding but clear all the 'easier' content early on, there really isn't much to do. I realize that the new savage isn't quite as hard as the previous savage, but I do think it's still a step up from original Coil difficulty... and by the point it was released, many people already quit the game. Most people in my FC were mid-core players who lost interest soon after trying their hands at the first savage and realizing that they just didn't have the skill/damage to do it.

I also think the new crafting/gathering stuff has discouraged people from doing it unless they have a lot of time to commit to the game every single week. Binge playing every once in a while is one thing, but having to cap your tomestones AND red scripts (for gatherers and crafters) is quite a chore. But if you don't do it, you're behind (but that only really matters for battle classes IF you are part of the small percentage of people who raid). Furthermore, only two new dungeons per patch (as opposed to three) makes tomestone grinding pretty stale as it is. I agree that quality over quantity is the way to go, but I am disappointed that the new dungeons added per patch was reduced from three to two.

I'm not sure what the 'fix' would be for mid-core content. I could say make the next 'normal' Alexander more of the Coil difficulty, but I know they specifically want to keep that content accessible to all. I just don't understand why the had to make it SO easy that it's a pushover. Even more casual players would appreciate a fight that doesn't require more than a few pulls to understand. There's really no middle bracket for players unless they are hardcore, and once you do beat savage... now what? I felt like Thordan Ex was tuned a little too high for mid-core content, and Sephirot Ex's hard enrage was a little too unforgiving (when the fight was first released). Lots of raid groups had difficulty beating his dps check unless everyone was alive and it was a flawless run. With better gear, the dps check is a pushover. I feel like Bismarck and Ravana were more at a mid-core content level (when released). Don't get me wrong -- I love a hard fight, but I also like when my friends like to play the game, too. Haha.

I'd rather prefer they keep things simple. They should think of the sick and disabled players who play the game, and pay their subs, and don't want to deal with too challenging and complex contents. I've been gaming since age 5-6 and now I play MMORPGs and I want to keep playing this game.

Agreed. I tried doing some of the more difficult things in this game with my previous FC that I was kicked from. It was much too stressful for me.

This is definitely something they could use and would've addressed a lot of the downfalls in 3.0 and 3.1. Their implementation of things like crafting, gathering and FC crafting has so little framework, you can't do much to add onto it aside from "add new recipes". Diadem could have definitely used more foresight in regards to having some sort of focus; Even with how open ended they wanted it to be, it doesn't encourage anything beyond killing mobs.

Same with class balance in general. To this date, I still don't understand how they expected BRD/MCHs to keep up with dps when WM/GB increases their damage by 20%, when auto attacks previously made up for roughly 20% of their dps. A lot of the PvP changes seem to reflect it too; some changes are incredibly short sighted and ultimately feel like a band-aid fix (which at the same time ignores the core setting of PvP...like having PvP specific attacks/materia not work in PvP)

It's roughly the same in a different matter. The biggest point is that you need quite a bitof time commitment to make meaningful progress, espesically on a fight like A6s. Most players who don't/can't invest 3 hours of raiding per night would have trouble keeping up.

Just a quick suggestion, but it would be nice if once every 2-3 patches we could get 3 or 4 new dungeons rather than the 2 we normally get. I understand that this would require more dev resources but when there are only 2 dungeons added to Ex Roulette it gets incredibly tiring running Ex Roulette as 9 times out of 10 I get the same dungeon (lately, Antitower). Anymore when running Ex Roulette I'm thinking the whole time, "Ok these mobs are down only this many more to go." Like, I don't really want to have to do this, but I need to cap so I'm happy this run will be over soon.

It shouldn't be that way. There should be a sense of fun and adventure, but I can't say that there's much excitement running the same dungeon for the eleventy billionth time and feeling forced because it popped for Ex Roulette and it would be incredibly rude to abandon and queue again hoping to get the alternative. Not that AK HM is all that great, but at least I have run it far less than Antitower just because Ex Roulette LOVES to give me Antitower. /sigh

There is no exploration or open dungeons in the game and not very much sense of socialness or competition, no real need for CC or anything in the game.

less trash in dungeons should help replace it with some puzzle or jumping (yeah some ppl suck at it but make it easy enough) or easy recoverable .... we got jump and 0 uses for it in dungeons.

Actually, this is patently and demonstrably false. There is a large array of instances where intelligent discussion and well-written posts have come to the forums, and places where simple suggestions were given, acknowledged, and then wound up in the game. Look at the Death of the Strength Tank in 3.2. Look at the countless minor UI tweaks, and compare them to the threads in the UI forum.

SE very clearly does pay attention to our feedback.

I think the disconnect is that we don't really know exactly how much effort it takes to do the things we're asking. We don't have access to the source code, we don't know how it's built, and we don't know what their development cycle is like. What may seem like a simple request might represent hundreds of man-hours of work (and I suspect they have a pretty small team, compared to some other MMOs).

I've talked exhaustively about my personal grievances with the updates lately. I'm getting a little bored of the predictable nature of them all, since for the most part they're a carbon copy of the last major update. Still, there are plenty of people telling me I should either put up with it or quit and I don't want to give them the satisfaction. So here I am, posting it again.

Regarding the jump part, I honestly believe that such a thing would be FAR more taxing than you think lol. Look no further than the GS GATEs that involve the clunky jumping. Easy and kinda fun on an individual level, but I really wouldn't trust my peers to pass them on their first try (of the dungeon, not ever at all). There's going to be a lot of waiting, and if the in-game population and these forums are anything to go by, waiting is a huge problem.

We did also get a bit of a puzzle mechanic in some low level dungeons, like Sastasha and Sunken Temple. Again, I wouldn't really trust my peers to take the time to figure out a puzzle if it isn't a static answer or involves collecting stuff if those are examples of what to expect party members to be like lol. Expecting people, who rage over a single wipe or get annoyed that a fight is taking 30 seconds longer because a DPS is not keeping up, to spend the time thinking about a puzzle that's gating them from quickly finishing a dungeon is REALLY asking for trouble. It'll quickly weed out those types of players from bothering to play at least... hopefully.

All level 60 dungeons trash mobs doesn't even give you money. What's the point of dungeons seriously? just remove all the mobs and put 3 bosses close to each other and that's all. FFXIV have amazing scenarios and everything but its just ... you can't interact with anything.

Yeah and dungeon loot is kinda ass when everything is CLEAR PRISMS and WORTHLESS POTIONS. You literally slog through dungeons for tomestones.

I would love it if there were alternate paths and instead of tomestones the loot from the dungeon was the best loot and was dyable and the dungeon had interesting lore to it. Maybe "mini bosses" that have a random chance to appear.

Recycled content is not fleshed out quality content. I am sorry I want to love this game but this same pattern they are following is boring. Patch drops and you get 2 new dungeons (Not 3 cuz of diadem woo!), 4-6 story fetch quests, a new tome to grind and cap every week by repeating everything you've already spammed and grown tired of, and either hunts (again) or a once-a-week 24-man raid. The content gets stale pretty quickly to people who play a few hours each day, and I am not even talking the hard-core players. The content cycle is so predictable and its never interesting for more than a couple weeks, when patches are 3-4 months inbetween. The time wait is fine. I'm cool with that. But the delivery for the wait is always sub-par. Its not the content itself they release that is terrible, its it's longevity. What "quality content" has been released lately? This recent patch brought us 2 new expert dungeons that you spam every day, once-a-week 8-man raid, and crafting recipes.

If I sound angry I'm not. I'm frustraited. I play this game almost every day, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, but I'm sad to see it essentially stuck in a circle of unchange as the world around it leaves it by. You know we still can't do simple things like open our FC list while in dungeons? You know how many OTHER games have "figured it out"? Why is this game so archaic?

Speaking of those 2 experts a week.... wtf is up with Diadem? Thought they dropped development on dungeons to focus on "other content" such as diadem?

I'd much rather tails be tied with face.

I'd like them to do something about the ilvl requirements. So many of my newer player friends are finally getting to the end of the 3.0 story, and are being slammed with the sudden ilvl jump and feel completely overwhelmed with it. When they removed Law tomes, they should have put the Law gear into a "catch up" dungeon or something, I think or made it purchasable for a very small eso amount. As it stands, they're left scratching at the surface of 60 content, because they can't continue at all

Regarding Diadem and any future exploratory zones, I think I understand what the problem is.

For battle content to be successful to the casual masses, it must:

(1) Offer the latest tomestones in amounts that are competitive with the time-efficiency of roulettes, or a reward of equal worth. Once-a-day bonus or repeatable daily quest reward would help with visibility.
(2) Be easily accessible by either the duty finder (not location-based entry) or teleportation to an aetheryte if not instanced.

For gathering content to be successful, it must:

(1) Not require party recruitment to participate. Locking gathering nodes inside an instance that requires a party is a hurdle to people who need those materials and can't find likeminded people to help them in a reasonable amount of time.

You can tell your friends that the i170 gear was moved to the Forgotten Knight, purchasable with centurio seals, the same way the old Soldiery i100 gear was moved to Grand Companies.

Honestly, my problem with the diadem is the map design. A few floating islands with nothing really to explore except open space in the sky. There is no exploration. I absolutely hate the floating island maps such as Sea of Clouds, Asyz Lla, and Churning Mists. Maybe if one of the maps were like that its interesting...but then we get the Diadem and its the same thing and all I can see is SE churning out even more floating island maps. They need to find a better way to make flying relevant without cheapening the experience of flight, exploration, and battle/gathering content. The diadem just feels so empty and when you can see one island from end to end, it's clearly not big enough for exploration. I would love to see them completely do away with any future flying island style maps and make more large maps like eastern thanalan and coerthas. There is plenty of space to explore and travel.

I don't know what everyone else expected when they first heard about the diadem but this is what my expectation was.

[ 1.] Boarding the airship would be an exciting experience. It still kind of is, meeting in the company workshop before departure and making sure everyone has their tokens. Other than that, it doesn't get much more exciting than that.

[ 2.] A new and massive map with plenty to explore. It wasn't. The small floating islands scattered around the wide open sky makes the exploration get old REALLY fast. It would have been better taking it to a single large massive map with maybe caves, forests, and other features to roam around and explore. The older 2.0 maps even provide more variety in its design. Coerthas Western Highlands is also a massive map and shows that we could very well have something of that scale to work with.

[ 3.] Treasure hunting. I imagined we would find maps that would point us to the Diadem. We would get our group together, and take the airship there to explore the land and find our treasure chest. Maybe instead of trash mobs popping out, we would fight a boss determined to defend his treasure. What we got instead were randomly dropping coffers, open them and get loot. Done. Not exciting at all.

[ 4.] Gathering would provide a different experience than the average nodes. I loved the idea of gathering parties, or sending a party with people to protect the gatherers. I wanted to find materials with some sort of special quality to them. I'm not exactly sure what but I wanted whatever came from the diadem to just give me a totally different feeling of satisfaction than the normal items gathered. To me, right now the diadem feels like a lot of trouble to go and do the same thing I can do on other maps outside of the diadem. I'm not talking about making the item more rare...but maybe if it had some sort of special purpose.

I feel like what could have been an incredibly exciting experience to take the airships out and explore a new land was severely cheapened in almost every way possible. Battle in the Diadem amounted to larger trash mobs with massive HP pools. I want to see more mechanics, less trash, more unique monster types. Make it fun for crying out loud. About the only reason I go there now is to fish for Pterodactyls and I make that a once a week thing, if that. Maybe I had high expectations that couldn't be filled, but I certainly don't see any system or hardware limitations preventing us from having a grand experience in the game. I think SE needs to slow down and really put more effort into a feature before throwing it out into the patch.

They're a team of people with ideas, but can't seem to break out of the habit of falling short lol. The Hunt was in the same situation. It seemed so damn promising. Teasing an NPC that seemed to imply you'd be consulting the NPC to begin your "hunt", having to use clues to find/spawn your prey that could be anywhere in the zone, which included solo, small party, and raid/alliance needs. How wrong we were to think it would be even remotely close to that grandiose of an outcome. At least they got the party size bit sorta up to our expectations.

You mean how they initially intended for S ranks to be downed with a 8-man party and not over 10% of the entire server?
