PSA: Divine Seal and Synastry affect your HoT spells

Too many times now I've run into healers in DF at lvl 60 who still think that Divine Seal and Synastry don't affect the potency of your Heals over Time spells. I'm starting to think there's some guide out there that explicitly states "YOUR HoTS WILL NOT HAVE INCREASED HEALS UNDER THESE BUFFS".

Please, new healers, I know you're new, but learn to read your tooltips. And if I am trying to give helpful advice, don't yell at me to 'go play a healer if I wanted to be bossy'. If I'm advising you to use Divine Seal > Regen, or put your faerie on Obey, I'm not trying to bully or demean you. I'm only trying to help.

P.S. I'm well aware that Asylum and Collective Unconscious are NOT affected by the buffs, but case in point; they are abilities, not SPELLS.

They probably misunderstood someone saying that Divine Seal and Synastry don't affect HoTs you have already used, just like Raging Strikes or Blood for Blood don't affect DoTs you've already used. A lot of people have absolutely no idea of what's going on while healing, sadly.

I wish more people would experiment with moves when they first get them. I spend time at the fc house experimenting with what effects what when unlocking a new ability.

But for Diurnal Astrologian and White Mage, Synastry>HoTs or Divine Seal>HoTs is one of the most basic way to heal in dungeons and raids, kind of makes you wonder how they havent figured that out by lvl 60. Mind you, i still see D.AST and WHM in DF just flat out not use any kind of HoT.

Can you believe that some tank was telling me to let Eos on sic some weeks ago?
I explained that I need to control her CDs for optimal use, but he kept insisting to leave her on sic. I don't have a problem letting Selene on sic for dungeons, she manages her CDs better than I do, but Eos? Would I ever...

Abilities aren't affected by healing buffs and debuffs (which is handy in a few fights), only Spells are. Check your tooltips if unsure, they specify whether an action is considered a Spell or an Ability.

Yep, HoT spells are snapshotted with the buff just like DoTs. Not sure why it's difficult for some out there to realize that. Same with tank popping Convalescence, it would only affect newly applied heals/shields/regens on them.

Maybe they wanted that Auto-Whispering Dawn every minute, lol. Thankfully they are not a SCH main because otherwise they would know it is required to be on obey to force manual embrace spam.

I have never, not once, seen a WHM use Divine Seal outside of a static.

I use it all the time in dungeons, so this completely baffles me when I play BLM. It's an amazing skill.

The PSA should be more: USE DIVINE SEAL WHEN IT'S UP, DON'T LET IT WASTE AWAY.

My Friends and I tested all the Ast and WHM skills with them.

Synastry and Divine Seal affects the Healing Spells So...
OGD and HoTs that you already used are not affected by Divine Seal and Synastry.
GD and HoTs applied to the target during Divine seal and Synastry are affected by them.
thats why all new healing skills from WHM are not affected and essencial dignity either.

(all off globals are considered Abilities and all Globals are considered Spells)

(Edited) we didn't test convalecence but I think it works with all the Spells and Abilities with the same rule as the HoTs and GCDs since it affects the amount healed not the healing spell used.

On the topic of HoTs, can we add "Do not use an AoE HoT before a pull" to the list? ;D I still see so many people doing this and just wonder what thought process they went through to come up with that decision.

And slight side note on that too, if you are lucky enough to get one of those healers, remember to just right click the regen icon off if you're on PC.

well thats just your point of view... i often see healer holding up aoe hots up all the time pre-pull just to give them some time to open a battle with dps - the tanks i know are fine with regen before pulling, if we run fc intern it's just normal for us to build up prepull buffs with whm regen/sch shield/ast stances - in random grps tanks are just taken by surprise but that doesnt mean the healer is a clueless nooby. if the tank is aware of pre-pull regen and its aggro there is nothing wrong with it imo... just another topic the community is arguing about since month. "Dont do it!" - "uhm well why?" - "...uhm..."

Someone told them that HoTs are like DoTs, and that they should be kept up no matter what. I see a lot of people "refreshing" Medica II with the party topped in DF Trial Roulette.

There's no "uhm" about it. I have a very clear response and it comes in the form of aggro! There's absolutely no need to unnecessarily build up aggro as a healer, especially if you're an AST as that's one thing they all want buffed. Use your HoTs right after the tank has pulled if you must, and even then the majority of the time you only need to throw out a ST regen, not AoE.

i gonna quote myself yet again "its just your point of view" - using med2 & reg as shield prepull can be useful if the tank knows whats going on. u dont have to play like this but u either dont have to tell people how they have to play their way, or that they are making mistakes if they do it in a different way o.O - most of the time my aero3 hits even before the tank pulled the boss... yet another move u would say im doing wrong huh? progress is questioning the status quo - open your mind for different playstyles, it can be rly inspiring from time to time, just saying...

the point that it generates "too much" aggro is soooo yesterday - its probably not the fault of the DDs/Healer if tanks cant hold aggro nowadays... just my opinion.

In fact you have to be even more careful about timing HoTs as an AST whilst the tank is pulling. A.Ben (our "regen") comes with an upfront healing component. Mistime it on a pull, and the first thing you will do is land an overheal on the tank as they hit the mob with their ranged pull (shield lob/tomahawk/dark knight thing) and you will grab aggro on all the other mobs linked to it as AST.

Might be worth making a PSA for healers that Esuna/Leeches/Exalted Detriment is actually a thing. Something those netflix&play healers don't seem to realise what it does

People don't, and there's a number of posters around these forums that are quick to say 'the game doesn't have enough teaching tools' when I learned what I needed by reading the very clear tooltips, and using the skills as I level, yet I run into level 50+ DRGs regularly that don't know what a damn combo is. Hell, there's posters in this very healing forum that have a tendency to spread misinformation because they learned to talk on the forums before they read, like that one fool some time ago who compares lustrate to cure 2, and says lustrate is weak for example.

I haven't done the math firsthand to see if the actual % healing cut of cleric stance effects it (since every other % healing cut doesn't), but the main reason the healing gets gutted when cleric stance is on is because your MND stat becomes INT, which is my case is about -800 MND. You're pretty much healing at the power of a fresh 2.0 lvl50 character at best who is NOT in cleric stance.

thats the problem in most of the mmo-communities... people talk about stuff they "read" around the corner without even trying it on their own - different ways or people who try to craft their own theory are often called "noobs" in here. its sad that every 2nd point in a discussion is "because reddit said it" or "i saw a youtube video" - hell yeah THOSE you are tryining to copy to "be a pro" have tried their strats on THEIR OWN somehow and somewhere in the past as well – i think there is nothing wrong if people ask or look for inspiration but i hate those who try to force people playing in a black or white playstyle - without even thinking of endless shades of grey...

If you're as "aggressive" as you say, it's not uncommon for you to be close to being MP drained after a pull. It takes up to 50 seconds to go from 0 mp to full when you are out of combat (6%/3 seconds). When you are in combat, it takes three times longer (2%/3 seconds). Unless the tank is going to wait for you to recover MP between pulls, performing actions or having a HoT on the tank during a pull will put you on the enmity list. This translates into missing out on 4% MP every 3 seconds and that's the MP you have less to spend on the next pull or boss.

Additionally, you're generating unnecessary enmity for performing an action that's not very helpful nor efficient. Having Medica II up on 4 players - assuming everyone gets hit by it and there are no pets - generates 100 potency worth of enmity every 3 seconds (not including the front loaded 200 potency on each party member). A single tomahawk, Unmend or shield lob is worth 360 potency worth of enmity. Depending on the length of the pull, this would result in either lobbing another ranged attack at each target every 12 seconds or stutter every here and there to AoE them. Either way, it results in unnecessary resource loss for the tank. There's also the thing that tanks can't lob more than 1 target at a time, which is a GCD of 2,5s and has to tag every mob within the time frame before the HoT ticks for effect. The tank could just face pull them and AoE as they approach him/her. Depending on how dense the group formation is and the timing of the HoT tick, the tank could miss one or two. Ergo: Any form of patchwork to work around any HoTs on the tank requires more resources than necessary. Not just on the tank, but the healer as well (see above)

So that was the "not helpful" side of it, so on with efficiency:
Assume perfect world scenario and the tank manages to grab everything without pointless resource waste and makes a perfect clean pull. Let's also assume you can somehow manage to make perfect use of the Medica II HoT and not a single tick is wasted. This would result into a 700 potency healing on the tank at the cost of 1502 MP (at level 60). So let's look at alternatives. You don't apply any HoT on the tank and enjoy the increased out of combat MP regeneration and you cast a Cure II during/at the end of the pull for 650 potency and it costs 884 MP. Not only are you missing out on 4% mp every 3 seconds if you apply a Medica II before hand, you're also spending 618 MP more compared to Cure II. So back to the helpful bit; the tank doesn't have to be as vigilant with the HoT on them compared to the Cure II.

If you don't feel like being a "community lemming", your choice. But if you decide to throw out your opinion out there, you're the same as those who write things on reddit and showcase on youtube as you described. What you're doing is called hypocrisy.

My opener is pretty much the same as this, but without the Med2 and waiting until at least one or two AOE hategrabs have happened. Divine Seal Regen and Asylum buy me at least several GCDs already, and Holy stun buys even more time, before I have to drop back to heal for a bit again (typically: Tetra and Cure/CureII till topped off, refresh Regen, and keep going to town.) So I don't really feel a need to add Med2 to that.

The argument against Med 2 in the opener is fairly straightforward. It generates threat more quickly than other HOTs because it's ticking on everyone, and if you have a tank who isn't prepared for it, it's really easy to rip hate. If you run things with a regular group where this isn't a problem, more power to you, but there's a good reason why it isn't a recommended practice with random people.

Medica II is an off and on thing for me as an opener. If I know party damage will be coming or mobs are AoE spammy (e.g. the mobs after first boss Fractal or second set of mobs in Neverreap), I will use Medica II but ONLY after the tank has established hate. My opener before going into DPS mode is Divine Seal -> Cure -> Medica II -> Regen -> Asylum -> Cleric for those cases. Depending on the level of the pull, the Cure could become a Cure II. That single Cure/Cure II still maintains the tank's HP without pulling hate in most cases.

Most ability type heals are scaled off your MND and nothing else. The exceptions to that rule are Benediction and Essential Dignity, the first which is just a straight 100% heal of your target's HP pool, and the second which adds a second component (also scaled off MND, mind you) based on the missing % of your target's maximum HP. Cleric Stance switches your INT and MND values, hence why Cleric Stance is the sole factor affecting ability heals. It's also the reason why ability heals bypass Infirmity, Static Condensation, Disease conditions; they're not taking into the formula for ability heals.

Besides, Cleric Stance is the reason why one ability heal shines. Assize; one of the best skills in the WHM arsenal.

Its funny that you talk about "hypocrisy" – because i said from the beginning, that i dont want to convince people that im right nor that its the only-must-do-it-that-way to play. I'll try to inspire people for shades of grey and tell them that it works for me/us - nothing more, nothing less. Yeah im totally aware of the breakingpoint in this discussion that's why i said "it works for us with an intern grp" more than once. If your tank is prepared, it can be useful - nothing more than that was my talk about. im glad that at least someone got it the right way now - thx Pirate :3

I find Medica II to be a good buffer to DPS with tanks that would normally be too squishy to consider it. Usually the undergeared and newer ones that seem to know what they're doing but just don't have the gear to handle the pulls that they're making. I do somewhat often rip aggro off at least one or two mobs by stacking DS Regen on the tank and using Medica II but not only does the HoT give them that extra bit they need to live enough for me to toss out a couple Holy, but if I do pull aggro I'm within range for the tank to pull back plus I have the Medica II ticks healing at least half of the damage done and if Asylum is up that usually covers the other half. It's situational though but to say never use Medica II as a tank regen is a bit limiting considering the benefits if used properly. However, using it pre-pull doesn't give the tank enough time to neatly organize things. I wait until the mob has been gathered and the tank has had time to get a hit or three in before I do so.

I don't get why you're taking so much offense, Neela. The idea here is that you're posting on a forum specifically for healers, and if you post a strategy that is extremely flawed people WILL call you out on it. Not for the sake of wanting to put you down, but in the hopes that you might try a different method and actually see the benefits.

This entire conversation becomes a little irrelevant when you say you only do these things in dungeons, because you can get away with anything in casual content. But generally when people ask about strategies they want to relate it to the current end game content, and quite frankly you could NEVER get away with doing that in savage. Not without being a burden on everyone else anyway. I understand you like different playstyles, but people won't do things that are suboptimal just for the sake of being different.

well yeah... its just how this discussion started nobody asked for the optimal usage of med2 - the only thing which hits my attention on this was "dont do it generally prepull". no word of savage, no word of optimal usage. just a sentence i hate as much as a general "dont use Eos noob" or "lol he/she still uses Diu over Noc". im playing my heal cls' since a year now and i know the common so called "optimal" rota for both of them (208 Sch, 205 Whm, Ast in progress) - so i dont have to try it at all to "see" the benefits im aware of them.

you are absolutly right if you say you can come along in casual content with "suboptimal" strategys and its excactly the point: "dont do this, dont do that" in general is just stupid to say - thats what its all about for me. just because its uncommon its not bad in every situation. ^^

Where Kabzy made a point where using an AoE HoT, where there was even a very specific mention of AoE versions, before pulling. With a very good reason as it is very bad practice with no merit that can weigh up against the demerits.

If you have one person telling you to put your finger into electrical devices and another tells you not to, would you put your fingers in an electrical device? Kabzy's more in the right here than your little game of (in)justice, as he/she was actually posting something that could be helpful, rather than harmful - Which your "inspiration" of Medica II on pulls are. Your kind of "inspiration" you wish to share is almost as bad as the whole vaccination hippie hype:

While there are tons of articles out there proves that vaccination does not cause autism, that one particular hobby blogger that says it does causes this kind of effect. For another example:

I use Medica II early in the pull on some pulls where I know AOE is coming from obnoxious mobs. The pull that immediately comes to mind is right after the first boss in Fractal, usually you're going to be taking a few AOEs at the start of that if the tank pulls two sets, and if you get all 3 sets, well, that's the fun part.

Usually I'll use DS -> Cure/II > Medica II > Regen > Asylum > Cleric in these cases.

I may also use it if the DDs are being super lazy and eating every AOE - surprisingly common on the second mob set with the AOEing birds in Neverreap.

I'll also do it if I need to pump out every bit of healing I can, such as a squishy tank trying to pull the dhamels to the water wall right before the final boss of Neverreap. That pull can be pretty rough with evena decently geared tank, but I've had some tanks that tried it that have less HP than my WHM (sitting at 13.7k with party vit bonus).

DF queue... Tank pulls. Eos instantly blows all cool downs. Eye rolling ensues on my part.

Selene gets left on sic unless I may need raid-wide Esuna for something as she looooves to leech pretty much anything, especially debuts that can't be removed. Controlling the fairy is part of knowing how to SCH most effectively. Fey Illumination is too precious to waste!

Fun fact, you can use benediction while using Cleric stance and it will heal the target at full hp.
And don't medica 2/regen at pre-pull 4-man dungeon, your tank will be happy.

Divine Seal > Regen > SC > Med II > Asylum > Cleric Stance & PoM > Holy > Aero III > Holy till I cant with an Assize in there when needed (depends on the tank and mobs if i drop cleric for it or not).
